"Merry Go 'Round," Kacey Musgraves

The next big, BIG thing in deceptively pop-y country. She co-wrote "Undermine" from Nashville, which, UNFFFF, right?

Whoa, I LOVE this.

What other country these days sounds like this, this kind of spare, stripped-down but still upbeat sound?

OhMarie

@Sarah H. I agree, this is great, but it also bummed me out SO MUCH. I feel like I need an antidote song now.

sarah girl

@OhMarie I know - this is kind of a "lie on the bedroom floor and stare at the ceiling" sort of song...

@Sarah H. Try Caitlin Rose or Nikki Lane.

Can we please talk about Kacey Musgraves on Josh Abbott band's "Oh, Tonight"? Her vocals just kind of soar/float - stunning.

I heard this the other day while doing a shameful combo of hate-and-nostalgia-listening to contemporary country stations and it was the only thing that made sense. Because I'd been listening to sickeningly false interpretations of "country" and "small town" life (I'm from both) all day, it was shocking to hear a song that subverts modern country tropes such as going to church on Sunday and getting married young. It's like a pop-country-station friendly lady version of Drive-By Truckers or the Dexateens (listen to "Can You Whoop It" immediately).

@bouncy castle It's the most accurate description of getting stuck in your small town I've ever heard. Country music tends to romantize the whole staying in the same spot and marrying your high school sweetheart (and God Bless if that works out), but it usually ends up like this. Don't get me wrong, I'm from a small town and it was a GREAT place to grow up, and I still wear my boots in the city, but this song is everyone that never left.

@Redheads have even more fun So, so accurate.

I love that song on Nashville! I've been listening to the soundtrack on repeat at work. My coworkers are ready to kill me, but whatever.

Jolly Farton

@Slutface Whaaat I would love it if I had coworkers who blast the Nashville soundtrack at work

Oh man, I listened to this song on the way to work. I love it. I grew up in a small-ish town, literally between the city and the country, and this so perfectly encapsulates that feeling.

Man, I wish I had this song in high school. This would have been the perfect joyriding on dirt roads song.

DollyHardOn

Ahhh I love Kacey Musgraves. She's so cool, please be my best friend Kacey!!

Also I second the notion above to check out Caitlin Rose and Nikki Lane. Caitlin is an absolute angel (who I would also like to be my best friend).

I just had a flashback to middle school Latin class and then I died of nerdiness. And now I am dead, thanks Hairpin!

There is definitely so much that is involved with this all here. There is so much competition out there and you have to be able to compete with them or you are going under. Definitely do your homework on this so much here.
