It's Oscar Time, With Julie

Julie made a list of Oscar nominated films you can watch at home on Netflix and Amazon. Thanks, Julie!

I want Cristoph Waltz to take it all, and send everyone else home crying (that means you, Hathaway).

I also hated Les Miz in a way that made people sitting next to me mock me afterwards. It was really hard to keep it at sighs, not screams. Man that is one piece of doody.

@parallel-lines THANK YOU. I feel like I am the only one in the universe that hated Les Miz. All the characters irritated the SHIT out of me. I wanted them all to die. It felt like it was lab grown to win an Oscar, not be a good adaptation of a musical. (I really want Sally Field to win supporting actress and then Anne Hathaway to pull a Kanye on stage. Girlfriend can smell the Oscar.)

But Beasts of the Southern Wild was a magical, magical film. I'm pulling for it to win!

@yourstruly I walked into it cold--no expectations, no idea of what the music sounded like--and was flabbergasted at how bad it was. All of it. The music: bad. Most of the singing: bad. The plot line: dude, WTF on half of it. Bad. David Denby summed it up pretty well: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2013/01/theres-still-hope-for-people-who-love-les-miserables.html

@parallel-lines christopher waltz for president of earth

"How to Survive a Plague" is AMAAAAAAZING. Best documentary I've ever seen, hands down, I was in tears by the end.

Valley Girl

@Sarah H. I thought I was so cutting edge because I saw Queen of Versailles bc it had all the Best Doc buzz but suddenly this movie is all I'm hearing about! I want to check it out.

sarah girl

@Valley Girl It's streaming on Netflix!

@Valley Girl How to Survive a Plague is good, but watch We Were Here, too! Plague is about powerbroking and a kind of elite - they do important work, yes! But We Were Here is really great and also there are people who aren't white in it.

@frigwiggin Oh my god, I saw it in the theater with my dad and we basically clutched each other for the entire thing because flawed father-daughter relationships and ahhhhhhhhh

sarah girl

@frigwiggin Oh god, I cried enough seeing it by myself, I think I would have drowned in tears if I'd seen it with my dad. Definitely one of those movies where you cry at the end, then just keep on crying through the credits...

@Jane Marie This is me sticking my fingers in my ears and going LA LA LA LA LA LA

@Jane Marie Oh man, I thought I was the only one. THANKS JANE!

@frigwiggin I really really really want to see this movie, but should I NOT watch it with my boyfriend whose college-aged daughter has all but estranged herself?

Mirror Mirror is Oscar nominated? I'll just leave this here.

Thank you Julie for making this list! Also, holy shit, amazon is on top of their shit.

I love Jackie Weaver. And Sally Field kicked serious ass playing a historically very unsympathetic character.
