Friday Bargain Bin: The B Stands For...

Heart It Initial Necklace, $9.99 (was $16)
Bertha, Dorcas, Hester, Kitty, Mildred, Nancy, and Rhoda: you're in luck. The rest of you? Better luck next sale.

Annabelle's Pink Dip-Dye Wig, $49.11 (was $70.16)
Here's a way to try out that new hair we were talking about the other day without frying your head off. Purple and blue are also on sale.

Embroidered Frame Duvet Cover, $69.99 (was $149)
This is the kind of duvet cover you see on some fancy person's bed and you're all, "What, did you steal this from the St. Regis hotel in Nantucket or something? I wouldn't even know if they have a St. Regis hotel in Nantucket."

Maternity Dandy Necklace Tee, $35 (was $72)
C'mon, you knew this was coming. I'm finding Topshop's maternity shit isn't THAT much bigger in the belly area than regular clothes. The main difference is length. Do with that what you will.

Olivewood Double Salt Keeper, $34.96 (was $59.95)
I keep wanting to pick up some cute pink or black salt but then, you know, where'm I gonna put it? And if it's just locked away in the cupboard, what's the point? OH! Randome aside: It's my birthday in a few weeks.

Lily Lace Dress, $59.99 (was $168)
All sale items at Madewell are an extra 40% off and ship for free with code LOVE40.

Connor Les Petits "So Fly" Card Set, $10 ($25)
I'm not sure what these are, but it's not like I had a choice, you guys!

Ciate Sequined Manicure Kit, $13 (was $19)
Imagine the hell one must go through to remove this junk, and then buy it anyway.

Asos Blazer With Studs, $60.51 (was $114.01)
Now that you've found shells what are you gonna do... with the-emmmm?

Mid-Century Sofa, $249.99 (was $599)
Yeah, go ahead and think that you'd rather search a bunch of local thrift stores and antique shops for an authentic mid-century piece like this, but when you consider that you haven't yet and you've been in that apartment for A YEAR NOW, plus the real ones are like $500, at least, plus bed bugs? Goodnight and good luck. (This could also double as a single bed if you remove the back cushions. And now you have a guest room!)

My favorite shoe designer in the land, Sigerson Morrison, which I can never afford, is having an "up to 70% off" sale.
There are too many good ones to choose from for a little over $100. Just go there and see for yourself.

ASOS MATERNITY! Oh my god, ASOS Maternity. I still peruse it regularly even though I had my bug 4 months ago. That Topshop shirt is indeed top notch though.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@hallelujah Haha, your bug. That's great, because I totally think newborns are like smushy little alien bugs.

hallelujah

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose For sure. Wrinkly squirmy glow worms.

maritimah

@hallelujah Can you provide me with some advice on the fit? I'm having trouble translating UK sizes to regular US sizes and then to my pregnant size. Like, if you take a size 4 in Gap jeans, would you take a size 10UK in ASOS maternity pants? This whole "getting dressed in the morning" thing is starting to get rough.

hallelujah

@maritimah Switch over to the US site! www.us.asos.com No translation necessary :D if that doesn't work though, I think its US +6 for UK sizes. & I always bought the size I was before I was pregnant. I hope that was helpful, or maybe just really obvious.

maritimah

@hallelujah I should have clarified that I'm shopping from Canada so I have to put stuff in my cart from the UK site and I've been too hesitant about the sizing so far to actually purchase something. Anyway, knowing that you bought the size you were before you were pregnant is super helpful. Thanks!!

Stephanie Boland@twitter

@maritimah I'm British and think that our size 10 is a US 6, but then I find Gap clothes run big compared to most shops here, so yes- I would go for a 10UK in this situation!

hallelujah

@maritimah Oh thats what you mean!!! Sorry for the all te unnecessary info - their stuff is pretty true to size although runs big occasionally, which for maternity was fine with me but I was also a house, so.

laserbeams

That wig! That is the hair of my DREAMS.

kellyography

God I love the Friday Bargain Bin.

Judith Slutler

... gah that sofa. WHEN am I going to get to the sofa buying stage of my life? WHEN

Emby

@Emmanuelle Cunt Embabe and I recently upgraded from a really shitty Craigslist couch to a slightly-less-shitty Craigslist couch. Baby steps!

thisisunclear

@Emmanuelle Cunt I had to trade in my first big-girl couch when I moved to a smaller apartment, and inherited an awful futon bench thing. I am really really jonesin' on this "sofa." UGH JANE.

parallel-lines

@Emmanuelle Cunt Macy's is actually GREAT for sofas--they have awesome sales and I've had really good luck with the sturdiness of their stuff and how it's held up to many years of abuse. Plus, they have an adorable midcentury line: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/ava-living-room-furniture-sets-pieces-fabric?ID=669872
Expensive up front but you'll have it for twice as long.

leonstj

@Emmanuelle Cunt - Sofas and coffee tables are the exact reason I want to learn to make furniture.

I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to afford most of the things I want unless I make them myself.

aliceandstuff

@parallel-lines Thanks! I am in need for a couch and have no idea where to look, but I am gonna check put Macy's.

BoozinSusan

@parallel-lines "Cunt Macy's is actually GREAT for sofas" is how I read this. Emmanuelle Cuuuuunt!

mustelid

@Emmanuelle Cunt A few years ago Mr. mustelid and I went in on a sofa together, which made it a lot easier. My joke is that if we break up and have to split it in half, I get the top and he gets the bottom. But really we have to stay together forever, sofas are so damn expensive.

Though if anyone is looking for a stylish sofa that is actually sturdy rather than UO-quality, I recommend the brand Rowe Furniture. A lot of hip, mid-century modern looks, good fabric choices. I think we paid about $1100 so for ours, which, yeah... but it's sturdy, and we've had it for over a year and it still looks great.

ThisisVee

@Emmanuelle Cunt I just upgraded from skeezy Craigslist couch findings to the Apartment Therapy classifieds. Managed to buy a mid-century modern sofa and pay the rent like a real adult.

Judith Slutler

@BoozinSusan muahahahahaha!!!

meetapossum

@Emmanuelle Cunt I feel like that is not a good sofa. There are no arms! Where do you rest your head/pillow when you're watching TV and cuddling with the cat?

Spartacuss

@parallel-lines I registered to second this. I bought an "apartment-sized" sofa much like this one (the Corona?) from Macy's and it's one of the few solid purchasing decisions I have ever made. Beautiful and comfortable. That said, I just bought this couch for our garage... Because $249 and free shipping? (And because one time my sister and I got bedbugs in NY from an end table we found on the street AND I DIED INSIDE.) Anyways, I will find out soon exactly how uncomfortable the UO version is. P.S. Hairpin, I hope you get a kickback.

planforamiracle

@meetapossum also the reviews say it's really poor quality, which doesn't surprise me at all. save your $250 toward a well-built couch that will last..

ETA.. yup, just saw the same remarks downthread. bummerrrr :(

parallel-lines

@Spartacuss YES--that's the one I had, the Corona. They don't sell it anymore but that is a perfect small space sofa! So comfy, add the ottoman and you could lounge out and make it bigger. The only reason I got rid of mine was because there wasn't space when I moved in w/ my husband but if you find one, get it!

Emby

Jane, name that kid of yours Sheena (g or b) and make sure it wears that wig from the second it's born. You will have a Punk Rawk child, on my honor.

Jane Marie

@Emby I was going to! But then I found out Sheena is Gaelic for Jane. Which just feels weird. Hm. Maybe Eve Libertine Marie?

Emby

@Jane Marie Sheena Marie II

Tuna Surprise

@Emby
There can't be too many thumbs up for this comment.

allofthewine

@Emby WAIT is Jane pregnant?! Did I miss that announcement??

aliceandstuff

@allofthewine Yep! I forget when she mentioned it but she has been hinting for a month I think.

SuperGogo

@aliceandstuff I think Nicole first spilled the beans right smack in the middle of a FOT. I thought it was funny that you kinda had to be a hardcore Pinner, braving hundreds of comments, to see it.

Uh. "Jew"? or maybe it's J.E.W. and I just don't know what that stands for?

Lisa Frank

@Emmanuelle Cunt Jewelry, perhaps?

nonvolleyball

@stonefruit my guess is that she was anticipating an autocomplete of "jewelry" & then that didn't happen.

stonefruit

@nonvolleyball Oh! That would make a lot of sense. DYAC, indeed.

Emby

@Lisa Frank "Cunt Jewelry" *snicker*

Judith Slutler

@Emby I think that's the second Cunt Effect I have achieved in 24 hours.

Jane Marie

@stonefruit ..elry

Lisa Frank

@Emby Sounds better than "vajazzle" to be honest.

nonvolleyball

@Emmanuelle Cunt it's like the Butterfly Effect--only different.

stonefruit

@nonvolleyball

@Emmanuelle Cunt it's like the Butterfly Effect--only different BETTER.

FTFY.

nonvolleyball

AAAAH! I missed the earlier announcement of That Which Maternity-Clothes Browsing Portends--congratulations, Jane!!!

Jane Marie

@nonvolleyball thank you! so far it's just gross!

bunB

@Jane Marie I want to hear why it's gross, please! I need more horror stories to scare me.

Jane Marie

@bunB barf, farts, nausea, everything stinks, dry skin, nosebleeds, ETCETERA

werewolfbarmitzvah

@Jane Marie The "everything stinks" part is almost worse than the barfing! For all of November and December, all human bodies smelled to me like an old pepperoni left out in the rain. (It gets a little bit better, though!)

Bittersweet

Awesome, I can get one of those initial necklaces. Yes, my name is Dorcas.

Also, Jaaaaaane, now I have Heavy D in my head. (Thanks! Yay!)

SuperGogo

@Bittersweet Rev me up, rev me up, my little buttercup.

thisisunclear

I keep putting that sequined manicure stuff in my shopping cart and then deleting it because, oh god, the removal, the horror.

Jinxie

@thisisunclear Seriously that stuff is a BEAR to remove, even if you go to a salon and they use the hardcore polish remover stuff.

frigwiggin

Speaking of wigs, does anybody want some gently-used wigs? I sent some off to one Pinner but I've got more! They've only been on my head and the head of my dead best friend! (I gotta work on this sales pitch.)

frigwiggin

@frigwiggin I know this sounds like a joke, but I seriously do have wigs for the taking if you're willing to pay shipping. Most of them are kanekalon!

Bob Loblaw

@frigwiggin Ooh I do!! I do! What colors and lengths are they?

hallelujah

@frigwiggin OH YES PLEASE! Wigssssss

hallelujah

@frigwiggin also sorry about your BF :( Internet hugs!

owlegg

@frigwiggin Me tooooo! I live in Canada but I will totally pay for shipping if the price isn't crazy.

frigwiggin

Whoa, good response! How about after work I post pictures of the ones that are left up on the Sharepin, add the link here, and y'all can duke it out first-come-first-serve? I think there are 9-10 left and at least four of those are looooong, so they require scalps of steel!

frigwiggin

@hallelujah Aw, thanks. Today is actually coincidentally the second anniversary of her death, but I'm in a pretty good place this year and I don't think I'll be sobbing at my desk like I did last year. :) I'm sending these wigs out into the world so they can be loved!

hallelujah

@frigwiggin Deal! I am sure any 'Pinner will provide the wigs with all the affection they deserve. I personally would put them on my baby, because hello, babies in wigs!

does it need saying

@frigwiggin I too would be willing to pay shipping on a slightly used wig and take care of it at its new forever home.

up cubed

@frigwiggin This is relevant to my interests. Thank you for this excellent offer :)

thebestjasmine

@frigwiggin Big hugs to you today, FW!

owlegg

@frigwiggin I may or may not be refreshing the page every five minutes because I am SO EXCITED to see these wigs.

frigwiggin

@thebestjasmine Thanks, lady, it means a lot!

@owlegg I'm sorry you have to wait! I have another 30 min of work and then a dental appointment, so I probably won't be home until 5-5:30PST. I promise I'll set myself an alarm so I don't forget to do it, though!

owlegg

@frigwiggin Don't apologize! I knew it was ridiculous, and I was bored at work

hallelujah

@owlegg you & me both sister!
@frigwiggin took wayyyy too long for me to translate that to EST

frigwiggin

Sorry about the delay, my dumb boyfriend made me stop for Chinese food after my dental appointment.

hallelujah

@frigwiggin The white blonde one with bangs!! I die. & that green!!!!!!

hallelujah

@frigwiggin Also don't apologize, you're giving us wigs!!

frigwiggin

@hallelujah Man, y'all are johnny-on-the-spot for these! A couple are gone already.

It's one of the already-claimed ones, but if anybody's interested in seeing the long sea-green one in action...

Oh, cosplaying. Those were fun days!

hallelujah

@frigwiggin I just replied in the Sharepin thread too, I'm not sure the best way to request wigs on the internet. I would go hard for that orange one if it's still available!

frigwiggin

@hallelujah Yeah, I probably could have organized this more intelligently, haha. So just the orange one?

parallel-lines

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that sofa is crap. Like, really terrible cushions, will fall apart after a year or two. I looked into it a few years back and didn't buy it because it was SO uncomfortable. To make matters worse UO charges $150 for shipping!

Judith Slutler

@parallel-lines and this is why the Craigslist search for actual mid-century modern is sometimes worth it :(

parallel-lines

@Emmanuelle Cunt I've had awesome luck with furniture from craigslist--once scored a Nelson hairpin legged california king sized bed with fancy mattress for $500! It helps to stalk a little bit and be OCD but you can find great stuff.

Jinxie

@parallel-lines It also looks really uncomfortable. Now, I own too many shoes that make my feet hurt to front like I'm some sort of "Comfortable or bust!" lady but I firmly believe that if you can't easily lounge and/or nap on a couch, there's no point having it around.

werewolfbarmitzvah

@parallel-lines AHHHHH, I knew that couch sounded too good to be true! It's way too nice-looking to be so affordable!

parallel-lines

@Jinxie It's wobbly! That was my main worry--I didn't want the thing crashing down with me on top of it.

Jinxie

@Jinxie And I just see now that you mention the "uncomfortable" thing so clearly I should get back in the habit of actually reading comments rather than just skimming them for key words. Also, I should finish my coffee.

mustelid

I mentioned this up-thread but Rowe Furniture has some cute mid-century modern inspired furniture. It is not cheap, but it is on the lower side of expensive while being sturdy, comfortable, and stylish. (Have/love this sofa in a slightly nubby dark grey fabric.)

decantate

@parallel-lines Thank you for this info! I was dying for that sofa and didn't know what to do with my furnishing lust.

frigwiggin

"No, Elaine, you don't understand! The N stands for...Nice Elaine! Like I used to call you when we were dating! But maybe I'll take it back and get you a different N, for Not So Nice Elaine, so there."

highfivesforall

@frigwiggin "I don't have time for this, Gary, I have to get this nail polish off - unless you want to stuff these envelopes for me, but wouldn't THAT be a first."

Heat Signature

@highfivesforall "I'd love to help you out, Elaine, but I'm too busy ensuring the freshness of my salt. Yes, even though it has been used as a preservative for thousands of years, it still needs to be preserved in and of itself. Stop hassling me."

VolcanoMouse

Huuh. The tiny olivewood box that I put salt in (because we are loser kids who own no salt shaker; I didn't know this was a Fancy Thing) made the salt taste... really weird. Somehow resinous and bitter, like a combination of juniper and Murphy's Oil Soap. Maybe that's supposed to happen but I am not Fancy enough to appreciate it?

aliceandstuff

DO YOU LIKE MY HAT

(this will make more sense if you read the comments on last week's bargain bin)

Angry Panda

@aliceandstuff I think it works well without any context too. :-)

mabellegueule

@aliceandstuff YES!

thisisunclear

@aliceandstuff !!!

iceberg

@aliceandstuff hats you can keep wine in... hmm when is my dad's birthday again?

OhMarie

@aliceandstuff Hey! I think I know you!! (not, like, personally, but from MaxFunCon--possible?)

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@aliceandstuff This is amazing. I love your hat, you old faux fur wine bag!

aliceandstuff

@OhMarie Yes! I went to both MaxFunCons last year!

parallel-lines

I admire people brave enough to have all white bedding. You live some sort of super clean fantasy life I can only aspire to--I don't have pets or kids and I still don't think we could pull it off.

Jinxie

@parallel-lines I have all (or mostly) white bedding AND I live with cats AND I do a lot of lounging on my bed with tea and red wine and the reason it works is because I <3 bleachie (regular and oxygen).

Judith Slutler

@parallel-lines I'm drinking coffee in my bed right now, so... yeah.

SarahP

@parallel-lines My thoughts exactly.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@parallel-lines Before I got a silly dog that picks up dirt like a Swiffer in his luxurious fur, I would have considered this white bedding. Now, alas. ALAS.

thebestjasmine

@parallel-lines All white bedding is easier, you can just bleach it right out! I have a very pretty white and orange and red duvet cover, and the pattern, ugh the pattern kills for washing.

BosomBuddy

PSA: JCrew is offering 40% off final sale items and DSW is offering up to 70% off clearance on their shoes (there's some nice stuff in there!)

The B stands for boobs, obviously.

BornSecular

Those shoes in the picture all look pointy and long and would make my monster feet look even bigger. :(

Jane Marie

@BornSecular they're on models and models wear size 11 and they still look great :) go for it!

BornSecular

@Jane Marie Note: I am not a model. ;) But the Wilis boot at the bottom of the page...beautiful!

Elsajeni

I didn't go looking for adorable mid-century furniture, but the other day I did walk into a vintage store and saw THE EXACT SAME mid-century recliner and ottoman set that has been in my parents' living room since I was an infant. I had to call my mom to make sure she hadn't inexplicably sold them (would have been especially inexplicable since she lives 2000 miles away from the store in question), and if I could afford them I would have bought them for sure to replace the shitty church-rummage-sale recliner I am currently sitting in.

alannaofdoom

Jane! How did I miss this! Congrats! All exclamation points all the time!

miss of arc

Just curious, what kind of belt would you wear with that Madewell dress? It's a really cute dress but I would hate to ruin it with some sort of horrible belt faux pas. (Also, hi, I'm a longtime reader who decided to come out of hiding and comment for the very first time to ask a belt question!)

does it need saying

@miss of arc maybe a nice skinny belt if you can pull that sort of thing off? I think in gold or silver would be nice, or you could do some nice bright color for some pizzazz, bright red, canary yellow, bright turquoise.

victorian rose

@miss of arc skinny belt OR if you have a fancy wide belt maybe? Also just an fyi, I think the dress is longer in person or I am apparently about 10 inches shorter than the model because the dress comes to my knees.

victorian rose

Oh me. I just bought the black lace dress from madewell for my grandmother's funeral next week. It was also only $30 in-store.

thebestjasmine

@victorian rose Hey, that's awesome. I bought a great black and white dress for my grandmother's funeral (almost ten years ago) and whenever I wear it it makes me happily think of Granny.

victorian rose

@thebestjasmine I hope that is the case with my dress in the future as well. When I was paying for the dress at Madewell, the shopgirl was fawning over it telling me it was *such* a great dress and that she owned it too and that I'd reach for it everyday. I didn't have the heart to tell her what I was purchasing the dress for.

Daisy Razor

Jane! Buy this salt set! functional AND decorative!
