And the Puppy Bowl IX Contestants Are...

"And just like a biscuit, [Biscuit] always rises to the occasion."
—The 2013 Puppy Bowl lineup has been announced, and my money's on Aurora and Juniper, although Biscuit, Eli, and Tuck seem to be ones to keep a cold, appraising eye on as well. (Full gallery here.)

My favorite Puppy Bowl factoid: The idea came from an Animal Planet intern!

laurel

@Sarah H. I hope his or her resume just says, "The Puppy Bowl was my idea."

beanie

@laurel and that in every interview he/she says that and then *drops mic*.

iceberg

AHA! Why don't you call them dog COOKIES, Americans?

TheLetterL

@iceberg We do! You go to the store to buy "biscuits," but you call your dog over by offering it a "cookie."

TheLetterL

Juniper does have a laid-back swagger in the picture, but Lenny likes to sleep on people's necks, and Daffodil IS NAMED DAFFODIL, fer cryin' ou' loud.

New Hoarder

@TheLetterL Juniper looks like she has a screw loose. I can't wait!

Ophelia

Guys, I never want a puppy again (the teeth! the peeing!), but PUPPIESSSS! GIVE THEM TO MEEEE!

parallel-lines

@Ophelia An article in the New Yorker highlighted the insane amounts of pee--apparently the ref was like "Don't kneel down, there's a giant puddle of puppy pee everywhere."

anachronistique

I WANT TO SNUGGLE ALL OF THEM.

RubeksCube

For a few years, my husband and I either hosted a Super Bowl party or went to one. He is the King of the Puppy Bowl. It didn't matter what his more "bro"-ish friends said or did, he would not change the channel. Even at someone else's house, he would hijack the remote and make sure the Puppy Bowl was on before the game started. You cannot tear that man away from his puppies.

packedsuitcase

@RubeksCube Your husband wins the Super Bowl.

love the look on that ref's face, a combination of good GOD is this what my life has come to and this is my life?! this is THE life!

AURORA COME HOME WITH ME

hallelujah

Now I'm considering how obnoxious it would be to name a human Juniper, cause man is that adorable.

laurel

@hallelujah I've only known one human Juniper (but I know two dog Junipers). She was a radiant hippie chick who had kids super young. Make of that what you will.

hallelujah

@laurel Duly noted.

Tragically Ludicrous

@hallelujah It makes me think of the Scott Walker version of "Jacky" which is pretty great? (Although the internet says that it's Junipher there which is just odd.)

Ophelia

@Tragically Ludicrous It makes me think of the book The Juniper Game, which I was totally obsessed with as a 13-year-old.

Verity

@hallelujah Ginevra Weasley is named the Italian equivalent of Juniper! Also I read a book (set in Elizabethan England, admittedly) in which the main character had an Aunt Juniper. (Her mother, the aunt's sister, was Columbine, I think.)

schrodingers_cat

@hallelujah It makes me think of the novel Juniper by Monica Furlong.

Megasus

Nope, no corgi puppies, worst Puppy Bowl ever. Yes, I am going to complain about no corgis on all dog posts until the end of time.

iknowright

@Megano! There is a Corgi mix, Portia! She's quite a beaut, I must say.

Some of these puppies are from my favorite rescue ever, the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue! I don't have cable anymore so I'm hoping I can still find a stream somewhere online to watch this.

laurel

@han Best rescue organization name ever!

Ophelia

@han Ah! My friend's dog came from there! He is, indeed, a big, fluffy dog. He basically looks like Barkley from Sesame St.

wee_ramekin

Aw shucks. Looking at that gallery has got me all weepy, and I don't know why. I think maybe it's the Pitbull pictures? And how I just want to make sure that someone takes the Pitbulls home too, because Pitbulls are wonderful and sweetdumb and adorable and loving and snuggly and loyal and and and I just want all of them to have HOMES! **sobs**

Uh...also, my foster Pitbull, Raya, is finally finished with heartworm treatment and ready for adoption. So! If any Austin Pinners are thinking of looking for an adorable and loving 1.5 year-old female Pittie, let me know!

laurel

@wee_ramekin You are nice.

beanie

@wee_ramekin I adopted some form of a Pit mix in December that the rescue was trying to pass as a Boston Terrier/Pug mix. I have never owned a dog before that was so friendly/nice and it is so sad to see how many people are genuinely afraid of her. It's crazy!

Ophelia

@beanie A good friend of mine has a pittie mix (with maybe lab?)...the only time I've seen her be ferocious is when she is FEROCIOUSLY licking your face because she LOVES you so much and just can't hold it in.

City_Dater

@wee_ramekin

My dog is a pittie mix -- 40-odd pounds of cuddle. And until she came to live with me, apparently my kneecaps were always completely filthy.

iceberg

@beanie It's really horrible how mistreatment turns sch potentially lovely dogs into severe dangers. Recently in my town a little girl was severely mauled by two pitbulls that were roaming the street by themselves (no owner in sight).

It's even sadder that this turns good people off from adopting them. I personally am wary of most non-tiny dogs, not just pitbulls - until I see how they act and how the owner is treating them.

wee_ramekin

@City_Dater Hahahaha, that is hilarious!

You know what else I love about my foster Pittie (besides almost everything - chewing things I forget on the floor excepted)? How whenever I lie down on my side, she finds a curve in my body and snuuuuuuggles into it. Usually that means she's either sleeping cuddled into the backs of my knees with her head on my thigh, or snorgling into my stomach and legs with her head on my waist. She's so warm, and it's so adorable how she's perfectly happy to play the part of a Pitbull-sized hot water bottle!

@iceberg Oh god, how horrible for that little girl and her family. And you're right, it is terrible how mistreatment can warp an animal. :(

Ophelia

@iceberg Yep. I have a dog who looks totally adorable (lab/border collie mix), but he's very nervous on a leash, and we have a process for introducing him to strangers. Sometimes I wish he was a breed that "looks" more like people's concept of a scary dog, because I feel terrible having to explain that they need to back off and not come running over to grab him (although, seriously, people, DON'T do this with dogs you don't know!).

Happily, he's a big fan of babies, toddlers, and puppies, though, which is good, because they come with no inhibitions and lots of snacks.

sarah girl

@wee_ramekin Love pit bulls! My parents have a lab/pit bull mix and she is the sweetest girl, so loving.

These are so totally super cute but these videos keep automatically starting whenever I open The Hairpin... Which is at work.... And it's loud... But at any rate, it's really weird that they're popping up this way. Any chance you guys can make it stop?
From now on I guess I'll just have to remember to ALWAYS keep my headphones plugged in just in case.

Verity

I had never heard of the Puppy Bowl before. I feel my life is the richer for discovering it.

paved with good intention

For those interested in seeing the puppy cam in real life, it is at the Washington Animal Rescue League in DC.
