The Best Things I Learned About Vinegar This Year

I got laid off unexpectedly this year, and while it’s been a stressful, ego-crumbling experience, it’s also allowed me ample time for soul-searching and psychological inquiry and watching back-to-back episodes of 'Revenge' on Netflix.” (Btw, doesn’t Madeleine Stowe look amazing?)

While some of it has been terrible, there are upsides to having so much free time. Consuming every TV show known to man is one, and dressing like the lovechild of Steven Tyler and Mary Kate Olsen is another (my apartment is cold and I really like scarves, okay?). But you can also learn a lot about things from hours spent searching Google. Important, life-changing things, things like Apple Cider Vinegar.

People have been using Apple Cider Vinegar (or ACV if you’re, you know, down) for a zillion years, but I only learned about this panacea a few months ago. Maybe it was the unemployment-induced boredom, maybe it’s my obsessive tendencies, but ... you can seriously use it for everything: cleaning your house, cleaning your hair, cleaning your skin, cleaning your sinuses, cleaning your liver — it does it all! Unsurprisingly, I got a little overzealous, and after forcing my boyfriend to endure a few too many active-listening sessions about how awesome ACV is, he finally informed me (gently but firmly), that I was “getting a little weird about the vinegar.” Tough love moments can be difficult, but they're sometimes crucial to maintaining your relationship. And sometimes your delightful best friend will humor you and mail you more vinegar for Christmas/the end of the world, like mine did yesterday.

So what all can your new fermented friend do for you? Remember when I said you can use it for everything? Well, you can use it for everything. If you’re unlike me and into housekeeping, you can use an ACV/water mixture for: steamcleaning your carpets, disinfecting your countertops, scrubbing your wooden or tile floors, banishing the sinful evidence of your bowels broadcasted by a stubborn toilet bowl ring, soaking your gold jewelry to let that bling shine, eliminating your dog’s fleas, and deoderizing your laundry. Also, you can drink it.

Drinking the vinegar balances pH levels, aids in digestion (shoutout to my fellow IBS soldiers), decreases cholesterol, regulates blood pressure, lowers glucose levels, clears your skin and helps prevent colds and sore throats. Not to oversell, but ingesting it is the best thing that will ever happen to you in your entire life.

Also, disclaimer: These are of course just my personal observations and pieces of information I've gleaned from the internet (which is never wrong!). Despite having enjoyed a fair share of "ER" reruns and appreciating a crisp lab coat, I'm not actually a doctor.

My vote is for the illuminati of ACV, the Bragg brand. It’s organic and unpasteurized (important factors) and bears an intriguing “with the mother” declaration on its label. The “mother” is the jelly-like layer found in the vinegar that indicates it’s unpasteurized, which is what you want. The Bragg website gives more information about this, answering darkly philosophical questions like “What is the nature of the Mother?” and “Is it okay to eat/drink the Mother?” Short answer: Yes, drink the Mother.

The daily health tonic that I’ve been making is 1-2 tablespoons of ACV in at least 8 ounces of water, 3 times a day. I enjoy the taste, but it’s not for everyone, and you never want to drink it undiluted! For one, it would taste horrendous, but, more important, it could also damage your tooth enamel (high acidic content). However, as long as you’re not taking straight vinegar shots, you should be fine.

This leads me to my last and favorite use for ACV: hot toddies, a.k.a. the only thing I like about winter. You can put ACV in your hot toddy and call it a ‘health drink’ (!), and, actually, it kind of is. Take the usual suspects: bourbon, hot water, lemon, ginger, and honey, and add a tablespoon of the vinegar. Now drink it. You'll eradicate that cold in no time. Then you can pour out a little vinegar for your homies and clean the bathroom.

My mom traffics heavily in vinegar for all manner of things including laundry and various cleaning tasks. Vinegar is pretty powerful stuff.

A handful of my friends (myself included) got weirdly obsessed with ACV our senior year of college. We would take shots of it after meals as a digestif. Also, employ a weird ritual of shot-flex your chest-rub your knees in order to cope with the gag reflex it induces.

Amphora

@itiresias I got weirdly obsessed with it in college, too, and started drinking the tablespoon of vinegar in water all the time until my roommates sat me down and had an intervention about how I was gonna ruin my teeth and my stomach lining.

I argued that it was at least better than doing the lemon juice-honey-cayenne pepper water cleanse. Who thinks that's a good idea??

fondue with cheddar

I know it's healthy but I'M SORRY I JUST CAN'T. Why do all the things that are super good for you have to be so gross?

Stacy Worst

@fondue with cheddar Well, if it makes you feel any better, it's only maybe good for you, and that's being generous.

fondue with cheddar

@Sister Administrator It only mildly makes me feel better, because there are a lot of other things that are definitely good for you that taste awful and inedible to me. Darn supertastebuds.

fondue with cheddar

@Sister Administrator But thanks. :)

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@fondue with cheddar I'm easily sketched out by liquids that have a gooey "Mother" because all I can think of are the "Alien" movies. Nope nope nope.

iknowright

@fondue with cheddar I do drink it, heated up, when I have a sore throat (with a little honey), and it actually does work. BUT! It is gross because heated up it makes the entire room you're occupying smell distinctly of feet. And sometimes I'm just not willing to make that kind of sacrifice.

fondue with cheddar

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose A "Mother" would never keep me from drinking anything, but that's just because the only liquids I know of that have it are gross for other reasons.

cupcakecore@twitter

@fondue with cheddar I'm totally with you on the supertastebuds! I feel people secretly judging me for being "picky". :(

emily eileen

@fondue with cheddar
It's okay!! You can still use it for cleaning and skin care! I use white vinegar at the moment though, so I hope thats okay...

magnificentjane

@fondue with cheddar Noooooo!!!! Apple cider vinegar only on skin! White vinegar is ok for cleaning, but not for bodies, as it feeds candida. But you know, maybe it's ok for your body? How's it feel?

fondue with cheddar

@magnificentjane Candida? Can't-do-da.

My favorite uses for vinegar are:

1. If laundry has sat wet for too long and developed a musty smell, wash it and put a cup of white vinegar in the final rinse. This de-stunk some musty towels that I couldn't de-stink by any other means.

2. White vinegar, undiluted, works amazingly well for polishing mirrors. It will look like it's going to streak at first, but keep polishing with a soft cloth, and it will shine up beautifully.

3. Apple cider or white vinegar works really well as an anti-dandruff rinse. I put it in a clean sport-top bottle -- you know, the kind where you pull up on the spout to open it. Then after I've shampooed, conditioned, and rinsed, I squirt the vinegar all over my scalp (using the sport-top to part my hair so it actually gets on my scalp rather than just sitting on my hair) and massage it in. I let it sit there for as long as practical, usually while I do the rest of my washing, shaving, etc. Then I rinse my hair and scalp. It works if I use it every day. I use it undiluted, but most people seem to dilute it 50-50 with water for this purpose.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@snowmentality These are good uses! My favorite uses for vinegar are:
1. Putting it on my french fries when I'm in Canada
2. Mixing it with baking soda.

Yours seem more productive.

flanhoodles

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose I like to mix baking soda and vinegar in my bathtub or toilet, and then it is like cleaning and a third grade volcano.

I really liked your writing style so I googled you (that's not weird, right?) and I found a bunch of links about how "stunning 22 year old model and former Miss Malibu Caitlin Wood has recently begun dating Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino of Jersey Shore fame." I know that's a different Caitlin Wood (it's a different Caitlin Wood, right?) but I like this article EVEN MORE imagining that, after being laid off from your job as a beauty queen, you spent your time forcing The Situation to listen to endless rhapsodizing about the wonders of apple cider vinegar. He should try it! It would probably be good for him.

JessicaLovejoy

It's great in the dishwasher, too! Everything shiny shiny and spotless. I thought maybe only white could be used for that purpose, but decided to give ACV a try when I was realized I was out of detergent AFTER I'd loaded the washer, and fuck all if I was going to unload it again.

NeverOddOrEven

@JessicaLovejoy
Wait -- Can you use it as detergent and not just a rinse?

par_parenthese

@JessicaLovejoy I also want to know that!!

CaitlinWood

Oh yeah, T.S. REALLY enjoys our ACV heart to hearts... you should hear him go on about all the vitamins and nutrients his hair gets when I give him a post-shampoo vinegar rinse.

snakpak

I tried drinking vinegar diluted in water for a few days, and it made me oddly jittery and energetic. My stomach wasn't too happy about it either. Sad face, cause I want vinegar magic to be part of my life. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Blackwatch Plaid

@snakpak Yeah, it made me feel slightly manic. A helpful boost at school, but not worth the experience of drinking vinegar or the inevitable nausea.

matilda

@Blackwatch Plaid I'm thinking it would be bad for acid reflux people like me, huh? I had kombucha once and couldn't sleep my stomach was so uncomfortable

blake_baby

geh...whenever i'd get sick as a child (which was often), my mom would make me gargle with a mixture of ACV and warm water. the very thought of drinking it makes me shudder.

the best use for ACV i've found is getting rid of fruit flies. just pour a few inches worth in a glass (or jar or whatever) and add a drop or two of dish soap to break the surface tension. leave the container out for a day or two, and the fruit flies will swarm in for some stanky goodness, only to sink helplessly to the bottom.

planforamiracle

My mom has been drinking ACV and hot water, every day, morning and night, for maybe 8 years? She thinks it is the secret to her energy, health, and youthful good looks (she is nearly 60.) Who am I to question her!?
As for me, the only time I ever really consume the stuff is in salad dressings. Baby steps, I guess.

SarahSJE

I just decided to do a shot of ACV for the first time last night. Ugh. The burn, the burn!
Stomach felt great and less bloaty however. Then this morning I got sweats and overheated which is weird because I never sweat.
I have no idea what happened but I now believe it's powerful stuff!

Onymous

Fissionchips

@Onymous This is true, but don't drink it. When I was little my sister tricked me into drinking Malt Vinegar, it just makes you cry and sneeze.

I feed it to my chickens when they get the sniffles.
IT FIXES EVERYTHING!

@dirtbagmermaid AHHH, really? Do you put it in their water? Asking for four feathered friends.

heyhaley

@dirtbagmermaid Hello yes, where can I find a video of chickens with sniffles?

jule_b_sorry

I sometimes do shots of acv

Or other vinegars

Ok it's not a shot but ill fill up the cap and drink it and its good

Dirty Hands

One of the best things I learned this year period, despite a pile of educational and worldly experiences, is that BALSAMIC VINEGAR MAKES SALAD TASTE LIKE MAGICAL, IRRESISTIBLE GOODNESS. Esp. when there is also goat cheese, olive tapenade, and/or some slivered almonds involved. Mmmmmmmmmm.

SarcasticFringehead

@Dirty Hands I usually stay pretty simple with the condiments on my sandwiches, but last week I got REAL CRAZY and ordered oil and (balsamic) vinegar on my veggie sub, except I kept forgetting I did that, so I would take a bite and be like, "why is this sandwich so much more magical than usual?" and it was because of the vinegar.

ACV is also useful as a joint supplement for horses - it can ease the symptoms of arthritis in elderly ones. We've seen quite a difference in some of our elderly ones using it.

Minabee

I had a roommate in college who was a raw foodist, which I was highly skeptical of. But one day when I was exhausted she convinced me to try a cider vinegar energy concoction, and I could feel the cloudiness in my head go away immediately. So I'm officially a convert now - well, to the vinegar, not to the raw foodism.

heyhaley

After Edith's post about jojoba and olive oil the other day, I spent a few hours reading Crunchy Betty's blog and have been flipping my shit over OCM, honey face wash, and coconut oil this week. Excited to get weird about ACV next!!! SORRY BOYFRIENDS. Form a support group? Where you can talk about how hard it is that your girlfriends have such beautiful skin?

heyhaley

...except oh no that part about the mother makes me feel really weird about everything

Jaime Green

@heyhaley I was going to reply, "Don't worry! It's just like kombucha!" But that squicked me out for a long time, too. It's pretty minor, though. You don't have to slurp the blob whole.

the real lp@twitter

I have been into ACV for years and recently decided that whole foods is too far to go for the organic kind, that my taste buds will most likely be burnt off, and that buying them in pill form is cheaper and easier to swallow. I get the same effects without the need to tough it out for the after taste.

Emily C.

No one mentioned ACV for UTIs?!? I tried taking ACV and water last time I had a UTI and the relief was almost immediate. It was amazing.

tealily

It is a lovely hair conditioner as well. And great for soaking in in the bath.
