Brody in the Ballroom with the Candlestick

"...I developed a completely insane theory that explains everything. I am also prepared to defend my crazy theory at all costs, because this show is turning me into Carrie Mathison."
Emily Nussbaum knows why things got all !!!??? on Homeland this week. Or does she? "Warning: major spoilers," but that kind of depends on if she's right.

Hmmm I'm not sure. Because then he will be betraying her AGAIN, which is sort of what happened at the end of last season when he threw her into the looney bin. BUT we didn't really see most of what went on with his meeting with Nazir, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the direction they decide to go. Though I kind of hope it isn't. Although if she killed him I would be OK with it.

great....just noticed this. @y

Springtime for Voldemort

Crap. I'm going to have to watch like 7 episodes of Homeland tonight so that I can read this and understand.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

But see, I can't ever tell how much Carrie is actually in love with Brody? Because she's so obsessed, but so good at her job, I think she plays Brody more than we give her credit for. Everyone assumes she's the weak one - the one with All The Emotions - all thanks to Claire Danes' quivering chin. I wouldn't be surprised if Carrie outlasts them all.

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose Is it wrong that I don't quite understand all of the acclaim for Danes? She does so much Acting, and also Acting Crazy, and I don't like it.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@Lily Rowan I'm not always super into her acting, but I think Danes does a nice job of portraying what it is like to be manic and what it is like to be terrified and what it would be like to be bipolar in her situation. For myself, I appreciate it, because despite what the show wants us to think, I don't think Carrie is an inherently sexual character. I think she's 50/50 cerebral and emotion, which is why her face does that.

Or maybe I'm pulling a Mathison and have thought about this too long.

Lily Rowan

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose No, that's fair. People think she's something other than 50/50 cerebral/emotional?? Because that's 100% correct.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

@Lily Rowan Yeah, like how when we first meet her, she's just coming in from a one-night stand, or how she controls Brody with sex. I don't think any of that comes from a place of lust for her.

@I'm Right on Top of that, Rose I think they connect on a level that she can't connect with anyone else, but every time she starts falling for him he betrays her. Her trust has been shaken too many times. I think that time they spent at the cabin last season was real, but when you put them into the context of the rest of their lives, it falls apart. I think she knows this. If they could run away and leave everything behind and start fresh with no ties to anyone or anything, it would work. But that can never happen.

"Major spoilers" for the season up to this week, anyway.

MissMushkila

Everyone at work is suddenly talking about this show, making me feel like I need to watch it. They all come to ask me about Arabic words. So then at home I go and look up the description and go "eh..."

If the hairpin says it's good though...

ContainsHotLiquid

@MissMushkila It is not "good." But it is exceedingly watchable.

fondue with cheddar

@MissMushkila I think it's great. And according to IMDB it's Obama's favorite show, which is kind of cool.

@fondue with cheddar
It is pretty great, and arguably the number-one thing you should currently be watching on television, and I whole-heartedly agree that it is not "good." "Good" television is reliably good, week after week, and generally doesn't throw its plot out the window every-other episode; Homeland swings for the fences, constantly, and so far has hit enough home runs to keep me eagerly returning week after week. That streak might be broken next week, and that's part of why I watch, too.

fondue with cheddar

@ThatWench I wouldn't go so far as to say that they're throwing the plot out the window. The plot changes, for sure, but it's a complex story with a lot of characters and a lot of deception, so it makes sense that there would be twists and turns. And I don't think the changes hurt the story.

I love Dexter too, and there have definitely been seasons I wasn't crazy about, but I keep returning to it for the same reason you keep watching Homeland.

karion

I, too, have a theory about Homeland, but it is far simpler:

It is a Showtime show, not an HBO show.

sudden but inevitable betrayal

Of course he's evil to the core! Look at his tiny mouth! That mouth is pure evil.

I am going to assume that any "Deleted by user" comments on this and all other articles about Homeland were in fact removed by Saul Berenson and/or David Estes.

I don't care what happens as long as nothing happens to SAUL!

@fondue with cheddar This seems like a good time to point out this picture, in which I LOVE seeing Inigo Montoya as Saul.
