Emby

My gf's #1 favorite New York factoid is that the Outerbridge Crossing connecting Staten Island to Perth Amboy, NJ, is named after Eugenius Outerbridge, then-chairman of the Port Authority, not because it's the outermost bridge in NYC (as defined by remoteness to the city).

Ophelia

@Emby I also love that they had to call it a "crossing" because Outerbridge Bridge is just too much.

Edabelle

@Emby My mind was blown when I learned that last year. The universe is amazing!

laurel

@Emby: Poor young Outerbridge never had a chance. What if he'd wanted to be a dentist?

RationalHatter

That's nothing. I recently received an email from the medical school at my university, asking me to participate in a study on Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The contact person/lead nurse's name? Jean Stain. I am not joking.

Lily Rowan

@Emby That is amazing.

carolinaclay

lmao this is soo great!@y

aeroaeroaero

#12 is just so perfect.

sarah girl

I imagine most of these names pronounced with a deep, deep Southern accent, preferably by pot-bellied suspender-wearing men.

professionalmess

@Sarah H. I know for sure that B.B. Comer should be, as I once took an exam at Univ. of Alabama in the building named for him.

frigwiggin

FURNIFOLD

frigwiggin

Also, Zebulon, Algernon, and Xenophon need to start a club.

lizardjellybean

@frigwiggin Or a religion.

fondue with cheddar

@lizardjellybean Or a law firm.

Megasus

hey there senator broody ;)

yeah-elle

RUSH HOLT!

Probs

@yeah-elle A buddy of mine works for him! That is a good name.

fondue with cheddar

@yeah-elle Gesundheit. Oh, wait...

BuffyBot

@Probs I played on a softball team with some of his employees! We lost every game except one where the other team cancelled and technically forfeit.

mollpants

@yeah-elle We're family friends with him! ACTUALLY THE BEST OF DUDES. Ph.D. AND the only human to beat that computer on Jeopardy.

yeah-elle

I'm glad this guy appears to be an upstanding dude, but mostly I was just thinking this:

fondue with cheddar

@yeah-elle I KNEW THAT. :D

yeah-elle

@fondue with cheddar Four more years! Four more years!

fondue with cheddar

@yeah-elle HAHA. I also love his mom's nickname under her yearbook picture: "Eve Holt!"

planforamiracle

If "Philander" is a real name, does it predate the use of "philander" as a verb?
like it was coined after a person who was a philanderer? Or just a coincidence? so strange..

lizardjellybean

@planforamiracle http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=philander
According to that "philanderer" came from Greek, and means something like "with love for people."

Priscilla Peel

@planforamiracle Philander was also the son of Apollo and a nymph named Acalle, but he has to be one of the most obscure figures in Greek myth. All I know about him is that he was nursed by a goat. Why wouldn't you name your child something a little cooler, like Heracles or Theseus or something?

LooseBaggyMonster

@planforamiracle According to the OED, philander had the same meaning then as now. I wonder what his parents David and Rebecca were thinking. Also per Wikipedia, "Knox's nickname was 'Sleepy Phil,' as he was said to have dozed off during board meetings, or because he was cross-eyed."

omgAileen

@LooseBaggyMonster So apparently Philander Chase Knox was named after Philander Chase, the episcopal bishop who founded Kenyon College. I still don't understand why Philander is a name, but it's grown on me over the years after hearing it so much at Kenyon. I've heard it pronounced as though it rhymes with "highlander," perhaps to distance it from the whole philandering thing?

lizardjellybean

@omgAileen FIE-lander makes me think that he's a type of lizard, for some reason.
"Ooh, look at your exotic pet! So brightly colored!"
"Thanks, it's my first philander. I'm hoping to get two more."
"What's a group of them called?"
"A congress."

deliosaur

@omgAileen Philander struck me as a pretty straight-laced dude, so hopefully he wasn't also philandering. He put Kenyon on a hill in the middle of nowhere so it would be far away from the city temptations in Worthington (of course, the renowned sinful Ohio city).

Tuna Surprise

Homer T. Bone

I hope this guy was a senator during the depression! Talk about aspirational voting!!

Cawendaw

@Tuna Surprise Don't blame me, I voted for A. Cake!

royaljunk

Wilson Lumpkin! Kirtland I. Perky!!!

olivebee

Buckner Thruston? If that's not a porn name, I don't know what is.

PistolPackinMama

@olivebee Bourke Hickenlooper was getting me toasty in the nether-regions, personally. Fwoar.

katiemcgillicuddy

There are better ones up there, but "Mike Crapo" has my heart.

the roughest toughest frail

@katiemcgillicuddy I once knew a woman with the last name Crapo. She insisted it was pronounced "CRAY-po", but she was such a raging bitch we just called her "CRAP-oh".

puppetofmanysocks

@katiemcgillicuddy

Hahahaha I had to register under another name to comment when I saw you hearting "Mike Crapo." Yes, that's my last name, yes he's a relative of my grandfather (albeit distantly) no, we're not Mormons.

And it's defo pronounced "CRAY-po." It's a Huguenot name, used to be Crepault or Crepeau, depending. But then...America happened.

abetterfate, I'm wondering where you live that you know an actual Crapo? Are you out West, with the loony Mormon ones? (Sorry, Mormons, but the Western Mormon Crapos are nuts.)

the roughest toughest frail

@puppetofmanysocks I'm in California! I didn't know her or her husband (where she picked up the "Crapo") that well, so I don't know if they were loony Mormons or not. They were ... difficult people, so possibly? :)

KatieBarTheDoor

@puppetofmanysocks I live in North Florida, and our county's long-time property appraiser's name is Crapo.

fondue with cheddar

@abetterfate I once sold a pair of shoes to a lady named Anita Poupard. I don't know if she Americanized the pronunciation to POW-perd, but it would probably be wise.

oboe-d-amore

OUTERBRIDGE HORSEY????

Also I first read the title as "Your baby name guide: 2012 US Senators edition".

distrighema

Just a few weeks ago I was doing some research for a history paper when I came upon the name "Philander Knox" and had to like, put down the book and calm myself for a minute. I'm so glad the hairpin is on the same page!

Edabelle

I really think #41 is the most special of all. "Person." It has a certain Zen bluntness that I admire. Any relation to Dick, I wonder?

fondue with cheddar

@Edabelle I know of a guy whose last name is Person!

Bittersweet

You can just imagine Wilson Lumpkin and Theodore Bilbo meeting at a Tolkien convention, with high fives all around.

jonquils

Welp, this preemptively solves any future child-naming problems I might have had.

Miss Maszkerádi

Not a senator, but I had to read something for British Lit last year where one of the characters was named Fanny Assingham.

LooseBaggyMonster

@Countess Maritza The worst name, I think, is literary but non-fictional: Assia Wevill, mistress of Ted Hughes and the second woman affiliated with him to commit suicide.

HeyThatsMyBike

@Countess Maritza Whoops, my computer name is now covered in spit.

Misselthwaite

I don't know if I like Furnifold or Person better.

fondue with cheddar

I'll bet Moses Clapp was never involved in an adultery scandal.

fondue with cheddar

@fondue with cheddar But Trusten Polk sounds suspicious.

meganmaria

I'm due with a boy in early January. I'm going to go ahead and ensure his greatness by giving him this entire list of names.

HeyThatsMyBike

Saxby Chambliss: Great name, terrible person to have representing you. Although he did just distance himself from Grover Norquist, so there's one thing he's done that I see as neutral-to-positive.
I mean, I once wrote him about ensuring that legislation Bush enacted that allowed for research for pediatric AIDS drugs was renewed, and he wrote me back saying he was against it. I mean...

EpWs

Happy Chandler is from Kentucky! We continue to have Chandlers (or Chandler, and he'll be coming home soon) in state politics, but none with that level of ridiculousness for first names.

Also, CRAPO.

bevrockin

B.B. Comer is from Alabama. There are bridges and college buildings named for him all over the state. It's pretty likely his name was actually just "B.B." as well, but I'm not sure about that. My Maw Maw said that some men born around her time in our state were often just given a couple of initials rather than a proper name. I had a great uncle named A.V.
