Derevkova

My pick for Overlooked Book of 2012 is Daniel O'Malley's "The Rook." It is probably the best book that I've read this year and I've barely seen people talking about it.

Jane Marie

@Derevkova what's it about? i need an un-depressing book right now.

smidge

@Jane Marie Jane! Have you ever read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? It sounds twee as hell but it's not, it's good, but it's also really sweet and lovely.

Ophelia

@Derevkova OH, my god, yes. That book was fantastic. I compulsively check online to see whether the next volume is out yet (it's not). Jane - it's urban fantasy, set in the UK. The protagonist is a woman who's lost her memory (I think it's more fun if that's about all you know, but there's a wikipedia page for it, too).

@smidge I second that recommendation!

Jane Marie

@smidge i half-suspected that! okay, great, will check it out.

planforamiracle

@smidge dissenter here: I hated the Guernsey Literary.... blah blah. I found it twee as hell, too predictable, didn't like the characters.. I am a negative nancy :)
I did a little google and "The Rook" sounds interesting though!

Inconceivable!

@Derevkova
Seconding The Rook! I loved that book.

I actually really like this@y

Jesus, I can't believe it's already time for "end of 2012" lists, it was 2010 like six minutes ago.

TheBourneApproximation

@katiemcgillicuddy This is what I came to write. Come on, it's not even December yet! I still have a month to accomplish something meaningful this year! No no no no... *Runs around in a circle, fearing the encroaching ravages of time.*

katiemcgillicuddy

@TheBourneApproximation Seriously, there is still time!! Although, I did click through the 22 albums list and it reminded me how great Chairlift's "Something" was and now I am listening to it. So that's something.

highfivesforall

@katiemcgillicuddy I have to say, I think it is pretty lame that so many "end of year" lists come out before the actual end of the year. I like the phrasing of the buzzfeed headline, it's not implying that 2012 is over, just that you might want to check these out before the end of the year, maybe before you write your own best-of list.

But what happens to all the books/movies/music that comes out in late December? Is it all just Christmas albums that we can ignore? If anyone works in publishing, do people avoid coming out with books at the end of the year because they won't make it onto best-of lists? Or does the end-of-year consumerism rush make up for that?

Dan Kois

@katiemcgillicuddy We get stuff early! So our lists include everything from December.

Brunhilde

My hair would do that "Step by Step Side Chignon" that the skinny ginger beauty is sporting. Now I'm going to have to look up the steps because I'm going to need waaaaay more explanation than 6 pictures.

fondue with cheddar

@Brunhilde I read a lot of Mary Higgins Clark books when I was a teen, and it always annoyed me that every one of her lead characters was always tying her hair back in a chignon. Also, I had no idea what a chignon was.

Brunhilde

@fondue with cheddar Ha, me too! Between this the availability of margarine/butter to us, I'm beginning to suspect we had similar childhoods.

fondue with cheddar

@Brunhilde Wow, we're like twins! ;)

WHERE IS THE SNAKE BRAID?

TheBourneApproximation

@fondue with cheddar aweeeessssooooooommmeeee....

fondue with cheddar

@TheBourneApproximation That is my reaction. Every time.

frigwiggin

Some days I feel like throwing my Pinterest account in a hole and burying it for 100 years because I keep seeing the same shit over and over. Maybe that's too dramatic, but it probably is a good indicator that I need to lay off?

Jane Marie

@frigwiggin i can't get into pinterest! i keep trying so hard, to no avail. maybe if i quit doing the bargain bin...

fondue with cheddar

@frigwiggin Do what I do...don't use it to look at other people's stuff, use it as a collection of things you've come across on your own.

frigwiggin

@Jane Marie Sometimes I have bursts of affection/obsession where I just sit around for an hour saving up pretty foods so that I can pin them all at once, but I have been super-uninspired by the "Women's Fashion" section recently, which is originally what I joined up for.

@fondue with cheddar Oh, I definitely do! Just, sometimes I like to trawl the fashion section for outfit ideas, but 90% of the time it's just aspirational pinning of expensive stuff instead of actual real-person outfits, and it makes me go bleahhhhhh. I do like when people's pets get pinned to the "Food" section and vice-versa, though.

fondue with cheddar

@frigwiggin Yeah, I most limit my pins to attainable things, though I also have boards dedicated to amazing architecture and unreachable (by me) vacation spots.

Mispins are fun, indeed. I like to pretend that the pins were posted in the right section and imagine how they relate, like...well the only way I can see pinning one's pet to the food section is pretty gruesome.

redheaded&crazy

@Jane Marie don't quit doing the bargain bin though!!!!!

cuminafterall

@frigwiggin Finding the right people to follow is half the battle... I started out following just my Facebook friends, most of whom, to put it politely, don't share my taste. When I started following bloggers I read, and then following the people they follow, my front page got a lot better.

I never enter the wilds of Pinterest's open categories, except to point and laugh. To that end, I also enjoy searching "balls" and "Christian Grey."

Megasus

@frigwiggin I have only ever Pinned in a professional capacity.

Beatrix Kiddo

None of the hairstyles would work on naturally curly hair. [Sad face]

smidge

@Beatrix Kiddo you could use the headband thing to make your curls...more...wait

sudden but inevitable betrayal

@Beatrix Kiddo I'm going to make that side chignon work, if it's the last thing I do!!!!

Beatrix Kiddo

@sudden but inevitable betrayal I'll try it, but I'm skeptical!

planforamiracle

@Beatrix Kiddo I have naturally curly/wavy hair and the headband thing works to make my curls nice and smooth!
Also really wanna try the side chignon.. it's nice to see pretty hair pictures on pinterest but the instructions for how to do it are never quite enough for this wash'n'wea gal.. :/

yeah-elle

The music list is missing Mean Jeans' On Mars, which is my favorite new album of 2012. Or Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas which came out all the way back in January, but should definitely make every 2012 music list.

Reginal T. Squirge

I will dismantle any "Best ____ of 2012" list that doesn't include What We Saw From The Cheap Seats.

cmcm

Am I the only one who looks at all of those hairstyles and thinks "I am completely incapable of making any of those happen"? I can do "ponytail" and "bun" pretty well, but that's the extent of my hair repertoire.

I fail at girldom.
