The Wolf at the Door

PLAYBOY: It’s been almost four decades since it happened. Does the grief dissipate?

COLBERT: No. It’s not as keen. Well, it’s not as present, how about that? It’s just as keen but not as present. But it will always accept the invitation. Grief will always accept the invitation to appear. It’s got plenty of time for you.

PLAYBOY: “I’ll be here.”

COLBERT: That’s right. “I’ll be here when you need me.” The interesting thing about grief, I think, is that it is its own size. It is not the size of you. It is its own size. And grief comes to you. You know what I mean? I’ve always liked that phrase He was visited by grief, because that’s really what it is. Grief is its own thing. It’s not like it’s in me and I’m going to deal with it. It’s a thing, and you have to be okay with its presence. If you try to ignore it, it will be like a wolf at your door.

Playboy (banner ads NSFW, duh) talked to an out-of-character Stephen Colbert about many things, including losing his father and brothers. We think we might have something in our eyes.

What a nice interview. I love the sentiment "It got used."

Ahhhh these make me feel so wonderfully@n

Is there a SFW version anywhere? I want to read it, like, NOW.

@KatnotCat Agreed. Hairpin (and Stephen), I love you, but I am not going to click a link that goes to Playboy at work.

@KatnotCat Yep, not reading now. But I will free-associate from this excerpt: grief as the "wolf at your door" reminds me of the birds of sorrow from Walk Two Moons, nesting in your hair.

@spex Oh gosh, I just read the interview on my phone. The part about his brother's belt kills me. (highly recommended.)

@KatnotCat FWIW, I just clicked on it and read it and there was nothing that was NSFW on the page. I also have really good adblockers installed though.

@spex That book has the ability to make me cry even now. It's one of my absolute favorites.

I had a friend copy and paste the article to me in e-mails.

@Tiktaalik I'll just tough it out and read it at home. My office is pretty relaxed about website, really, but I feel like "Playboy" in the address history speaks for itself (EVEN IF ITS SAYING THE WRONG THING, DAMN IT).

@KatnotCat Seconded - could anyone transcribe into a Word doc or PDF or something?

@KatnotCat Hey, I found this non-playboy-hosted version HERE.

This was great. I had no idea and like Colbert even better now. Those people who tell you you will/should/are going to "get over it" are terrible, awful mindless people. Yes, the grief diminishes, becomes less raw, but of course it is always still part of you, just like the loved ones you lost are still part of you, and that's a good thing.

Every time I hear about Colbert, I end up loving him just a little bit more. Oh, Stephen.

It's a lovely interview, I love Colbert so much, etc... but... HE'S GOING TO BE AN EXTRA IN THE HOBBIT?!?!?!?! ::swoon::

I love the part about his mom teaching him and his siblings how to swoon! What a neat family.

I want to read this so badly but I'm at work :(

I can't read playboy now either, but googling reveals this: http://ericspitznagel.com/content/published-stories/celebrity-interviews-published-stories/stephen-colbert-the-playboy-interview/ is it the same interview?

@zb Yes, that's the same one!

Priscilla Peel

LOVE that he talks about the Lyre of Orpheus (the Robertson Davies novel)!

@Priscilla Peel

That made me like him even more too! There are nerds the world over to whom talking Lord of the Rings is second nature...but a guy who cites Robertson Davies?! Swoon.

Vera Knoop

The more I learn about Colbert, the more I like him. He's sort of the anti- Jon Stewart that way.

@Vera Knoop Does that mean you dislike Stewart?
