"The Third Brightest Object in the Sky"

"Did you know you can see the International Space Station from your house? As the third brightest object in the sky, after the sun and moon, the space station is easy to see if you know where and when to look for it."
Uhh, no!? Well, did you know you can sign up for NASA to email you if it's a good day for a sighting in your town? Did you know your flying car and vacation home on Mars are never coming? Did you know we're alone in the universe?

I've seen it! It's like a huge gold satellite (different than an airplane in that it's higher and doesn't blink) moving really fast. It's great. I bet it scares the crap out of people if they don't know what they're looking at.

@laurel That's my favorite part of fire nights in my back yard: Looking for the ISS. I have an app that locates the ISS and also notifies you about iridium flares. If you've never seen one of those, DO. They're SUPER NEAT (and REDONK BRIGHT sometimes- people usually think they're UFOs.)

@angermonkey: Ahhhh, the iridium flares. Before he moved here, my boyfriend came to visit me in NM and while stargazing, he told me about iridium flares. Seconds later, one flew over and flashed and we cheered. So bright and flashy and lovely. Thank you for reminding me.

Oh, squiggles

Hey, if this tiny little mudball is literally teeming with life, who says we are alone in the universe?

Can this be the place where we talk about good space books? God I love space books. I'm reading Deborah Cadbury's "Space Race" now but I'm going to have to go back to Mary Roach's "Packing For Mars" after this. "The Right Stuff" is good too but I would like more science in it.
SPACE, YOU GUYS.

Inconceivable!

Packing for Mars is the absolute BEST. Mary Roach is such a smart, entertaining writer. I also really liked Space Chronicles, by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

My favorite picture of my brother and myself is of him reading to me in bed (he's six, I'm almost-three) from a book about the FUTURE and on the back is a picture of a robot serving breakfast. I wish that book weren't long-gone because I'm pretty sure it was written in the '60s and had a great bit about how cars would drive/fly themselves in the 1990s.

I may have mentioned this before but I tell this anecdote literally every time someone says something like, "This is the future, WHERE IS MY FLYING CAR"
