The Last Twinkie

"Too late."
Goodbye, Hostess. Some people are already stocking up (stocking stuffer?).

Update: Or not.

NeverOddOrEven

Then tonight I shall eat Ho Hos and shed a tear.

As if I needed an excuse...

parallel-lines

WHY DO I READ THE COMMENTS ON ARTICLES LIKE THAT? I KNOW BETTER, UGH!!!!

To summarize:
-Unions are greedy and full of rich evil people who want to fuck you over
-Blame Obama you can't have twinkies anymore
-these bakers are greedy, they should have pretty much agreed to work for free and been thankful for it
-that'll teach those greedy unions a lesson!

Poor management will always blame the union. And of course private equity is involved, no surprises there... http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/16/1162235/-Private-equity-owned-Hostess-blames-striking-workers-as-it-liquidates?showAll=yes

noodge

@parallel-lines I think there may be fallout like this in the next year or two from companies who were creating their executive profits by treating their employees like shit, and the executives sure as shit aren't going to take a paycut, knowhaymsayin?

It's like Jon Stewart said: "Let's face the facts... Pizza and coal companies are just unlucky enough to have a labor force that can't be outsourced. Obamacare [unions, anyone calling bullshit] is just the latest excuse to wriggle out of the social contract."

districter

@parallel-lines Thanks for that, I had a feeling there was another side of the story after I saw the pouty CEO on the Today Show this morning.

parallel-lines

@districter Don't feel sorry for that guy--him and the PE company are going to parcel up the company, sell it off and walk away with $$$. The workers are, however, totally fucked.

parallel-lines

@teenie I keep waiting for that day. Waiting and waiting and waiting. As a brand, Hostess has a pretty strange history when it comes to management: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostess_Brands

In the meantime: we can't regulate these job creators! Deregulation now!

stuffisthings

@parallel-lines It's amazing how easy it is turn to turn the story "union-busting killed Hostess" into "unions killed Hostess."

parallel-lines

@teenie Also just saw this: "Out of 18,500 individuals employed by Hostess, only 5,000 belong to the bakers' union."

http://gawker.com/5961129/hostess-is-going-out-of-business-will-lay-off-thousands

noodge

@parallel-lines
i think and hope that there is enough transparency in society now that people will see these business' actions for what they truly are, not what they're claiming. Articles like this help shine a light on the "real dirt". Changes need to happen for workers to have fair wages and benefits, and if companies aren't going to provide them then other companies who will provide it will fill in the void these shitheads leave behind. Let's hope we don't have to break too many eggs to make this omelet :-/

PistolPackinMama

@teenie And also why construction labor can demand decent wages, until undocumented workers are exploited, too. And why smart unions should encourage undocumented laborers to join. Also Cesar Chavez, where are you. (Dead, I know, but I miss him.)

God, I effing hate the world sometimes.

fabel

@parallel-lines yep, Fox news is on in my cafeteria at work & its take on this was something like "How OBAMACARE is putting HOSTESS OUT OF BUSINESS"

City_Dater

@teenie

Every vote that didn't put Mitt "Job Creator" Romney in office is an encouraging sign, to be sure, but until fair labor practices are seen as an 100% necessary cost of doing business (rather than high returns to shareholders and/or astronomical CEO salaries) we're all fucked.

Ophelia

@PistolPackinMama My grandma has this giant (like 4' by 3') Cesar Chavez poster (it's him holding a bowl of grapes, with 'boycott grapes' in big letters), and it's pretty much the only thing I really hope to inherit.

The Attic Wife

@parallel-lines Business owners, by and large, will always scapegoat the workers and blame the unions when it's really their own greed that causes their companies to go under. They either file for bankruptcy or sell their business and go home happy while their employees are jobless, with few prospects and walk away with nothing. Then they skew the presentation to the public and act like it's the workers who are to blame. This has been going on for almost two centuries now in industry, it's grotesque.

katiemcgillicuddy

@teenie Yeah but, I feel like the people who scream, "BLAME THE UNIONS/OBAMA/ETC" really quite like being hateful, ignorant bastards. They can have "facts" (WHATEVER THAT MEANS) pinned to their faces and they'll keep being angry morons.

area@twitter

@katiemcgillicuddy Okay, Jesus Christ, my union-hating friend just came on Twitter and was like "Good job, unions, you just screwed yourself out of Twinkies". I was ABOUT to reply with "Bullshit" but I just said "I can't even argue about this with you."

katiemcgillicuddy

@area@twitter Honestly, it's just pointless. These people don't. want. debate. They might pretend they do, but they do not.

PistolPackinMama

@area@twitter Good job, person who lacks the critical thinking skills God who may or may not exist gave a college first year willing to do his/her homework? Because really?

Also, wah, loss of Twinkies? More wah loss of jobs. Which unions do not cause. Rich business owners do.

Yeah. Wouldn't have that fight either.

area@twitter

@katiemcgillicuddy What's so crazy is that she's a staunch Democrat, sane on so many other topics, but she just. hates. unions. And hey, I'm not saying union representation is universally without problems by any stretch, but to dismiss the entire concept out of hand as "greedy" just makes me itch. And that's before we get into employee healthcare, which as I said below is my InstaRage topic.

@PistolPackinMama Sweet soothing logic. Mama, would you just pat me on the head for a while and read me speeches by Rust Belt Democrats?

katiemcgillicuddy

@area@twitter I know other Dems who feel the same way (they tend to not be the most informed people). It's strange. It's as if ANY corruption at all within unions makes them bad, period.

baked bean

@all Thanks guys, for being sensible. I really needed this. I hate people out there.

Emby

Wait, so is the rest of Zombieland going to come true now, too?

Does that mean I have a chance with Emma Stone now?

PistolPackinMama

@Emby I hear she likes almond butter for breakfast. On toast.

Emby

@PistolPackinMama NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

PistolPackinMama

@Emby Yup. Sorry. And worser and worser. She loves home-made Dundee Marmalade (heavy on the rind), and other artisan jams. And crusty loafs from organic bakeries.

Your love is never to be.

fondue with cheddar

I don't care for Hostess (except Devil Dogs) but I'm a little sad to see them go.

But Wonder Bread seriously needs to be wiped from the face of the Earth. That is some vile shit.

Pocket Witch

Oh no! Now my Zombieland jokes will be outdated!

Renleigh

@Pocket Witch I'm so glad other people immediately thought of Zombieland.

noodge

As a proud Philadelphian, I'm hoping this creates more market space for delicious, amazing TastyKakes!

harebell

@teenie
TastyKakes are also a sign of the end times.

noodge

@harebell
...end times because they're so delicious and we'll all die of diabetic comas from eating them all the time om nom nomhommmnom?

fondue with cheddar

@teenie That was my first thought, too! My second thought was that I would be super sad if TastyKakes went out of business.

noodge

@fondue with cheddar they almost did a year or so ago! thank the gods they hung in there!

fondue with cheddar

@teenie I had no idea! If they'd closed and hadn't bought a shitload of their products to help them stay in business, I would have felt terrible. NEVER GO AWAY TASTYKAKE YOU ARE MY FRIEND.

PistolPackinMama

@teenie Check your blood sugar levels and then take the right amount of insulin, and your death will be from heart disease and not diabetes, not to worry.

mustelid

@teenie When I found out TastyKakes were only available regionally, I shed a tear for everyone who's never tasted the sweet sweet nectar of a butterscotch krimpet.

fondue with cheddar

@mustelid Me too, but they've actually been available outside the region for a few years now!

And now I've got an overwhelming desire to eat Butterscotch Krimpets. And peanut butter Kandy Kakes! I get so excited every spring when they make the mint ones for St. Patrick's Day.

noodge

@fondue with cheddar @mustelid

dark. chocolate. peanut. butter. kandy. kakes.
(with a big glass of whole milk, of course)

fondue with cheddar

@teenie YEEESSSS the dark chocolate ones are so great. Nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake...

I'm totally stopping at Wawa on the way home from work and spoiling my dinner.

KeLynn

@teenie True story: I had never heard of TastyKakes, but when I went to the store today to stock up on Hostess Cupcakes, I saw Tasty Kakes right next to them. I didn't buy them, because I was a woman on a mission, but it seems they are already encroaching on the snack cakes market...

noodge

@KeLynn see, comparing tastykakes to hostess is like... comparing mcdonalds to 5 guys or in n out. there is simply no comparison.

fb100003964691892

They make this orange flavored cupcake thing that is so delicious, so I will be stocking up on that. It's so shitty, too, that all those jobs are now gone. Boo.

New Hoarder

@Ashley Lange@facebook That is going to be my second breakfast today! I have a weakness for all things orange-scented and orange-flavored and those are one of the few sweet orange things out there! ~*PANIC*~

Inconceivable!

Given that we're legalizing pot in more and more places, you'd think if they just held on a little longer...

fondue with cheddar

@Inconceivable! My weed-munchies snack of choice was always Little Debbie Star Crunch. Or sugar wafers alternated with potato chips (which I don't normally like). I guess I like crispy textures when I'm stoned.

Ophelia

@fondue with cheddar Or they could've introduced a new line of brownies.

fondue with cheddar

@Ophelia That would certainly make them the Hostess with the mostest.

highjump

Union busting is disgusting.

stuffisthings

@highjump "What's disgusting? Not Twinkies. Seriously you guys they're actually pretty good!"

stuffisthings

@stuffisthings "We've got the powder. What kind of powder? Baking powder!"

jane lane

Everyone in my office is convinced they're closing because of Obamacare. Apparently everything is Obamacare's fault and it's very hard to take 5 seconds to google for facts.

fondue with cheddar

@jane lane My boss (a staunch Republican Obama-hater) feels the same way. He says he's going to drop our health insurance coverage when Obamacare kicks in. I'm hoping he'll adjust our pay to make up for the amount he contributes to our insurance now, but we haven't had raises in five years as it is so that doesn't seem likely.

stuffisthings

@jane lane Our office printer is out of paper because of Obamacare.

PistolPackinMama

@fondue with cheddar The words "convenient excuse" come to mind re: dropping coverage. Also way to make sure no one ever wants Obamacare to go away, on account of how it's the way people will get their health insurance.

Is your boss usually a juicebox, or is this his one juicy blindspot?

fondue with cheddar

@PistolPackinMama Exactly. I don't think he actually has a problem with Obamacare. I mean...it's going to save him money, so that's good for him. But he doesn't like Obama in general. He doesn't talk politics much as he's in the minority here (the rest of us are Democratic-leaning and most of us really like Obama). He's not usually a juicebox, just when it comes to politics. Oh, and he's slightly racist but in an old-person type way not in a hateful type way. Not that that's okay but it's not as bad. I don't think race has anything to do with his feelings about Obama.

olivebee

18,500 employees now jobless? :( :( I have never eaten a Hostess product in my life, but that article put a major damper on my morning for that fact alone.

baked bean

@olivebee :( There's a Butternut Bread factory in my hometown :( I know people losing their jobs.

area@twitter

Those chocolate cupcakes have been a favorite treat of mine since I was a wee one. I hope they continue to make them, but with a fairly compensated labor force this time. (I'm thinking about not buying from Papa John's anymore either; bitching about providing minimal healthcare flips all the switches that turn me into a frothing rage machine.)

parallel-lines

@area@twitter It's not just Papa Johns--Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse, Capital Grille are getting in on it too:
http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-10-07/business/os-darden-part-time-workers-20121007_1_darden-restaurants-health-insurance-olive-gardens

So basically, chain restaurants, GFY.

noodge

@parallel-lines OH NOOOOOO I LOVE THOSE RESTAUran.... oh wait. they all suck and probably should go out of business anyway. won't be too hard to boycott them, eh?

parallel-lines

@teenie I'm conflicted since they employ a lot of people and I don't want those people to suffer, but I don't want to support gross predatory management hurting employees.

I have a feelings we're going to be seeing A LOT more of this in the near future.

area@twitter

@parallel-lines Yeah, GDI. :I Going to chalk this up as another reason to support local, independently-owned businesses (including restaurants).

Blushingflwr

I had Hostess frosted donuts for breakfast this morning.

JessicaLovejoy

@Blushingflwr REAL AMURICAN HEERRROOO

Blushingflwr

@JessicaLovejoy I'm just sayin', I took one for the team. I don't know what the rest of you slackers have been up to. (Or, alternate interpretation of events: I overslept and those are the best breakfast option in my office vending machine)

Better to Eat You With

@Blushingflwr Oh shit. I was totally okay with this news, even though some of the striking and therefore job loss is just a couple of miles from me, but then you reminded me about the powdered donuts, and now I want to cry.

Ophelia

I grew up right near the Twinkie factory of Family Guy fame.

That said, my mom was a crunchy hippie who wouldn't let us eat them as kids. When I was about 10, I was at a friend's house, and they had TWINKIES! I was so excited, took a giant bite, and ohmygod they are the grossest disappointment in the world.

Twinkies, I hardly knew ye.

ayo nicole

Someone has to buy the recipes, right? Right? :(

PistolPackinMama

@ayo nicole When part of the recipe is "don't really bake but chemically 'cook' the Twinkie," all I can say is... I sure hope so.

KeLynn

@ayo nicole I'm putting my faith in Little Debbie.

ghechr

I <3 those chocolate cupcakes with the white squiggle. *sob*

Megasus

Hm, there is a Wonderbread factory in my hometown and I wonder if it's closed now? Who am I kidding, it probably closed like a million years ago, this is Canada.

iceberg

Maybe they should have made the Twinkie edible instead of an oil-soaked, beef-tallow-containing, oddly-metallic-tasting nightmare.

swirrlygrrl

Apparently Canada will still have them (CBC told me so this morning! Because Hostess brands licensed these things to another company to manufacture in Canada!) I will trade Americans Twinkies, Ho Hos and other treats in exchange for your ridiculously wide variety of Girl Guide cookies. And I mean literally - let's mail them cross border!!

Ophelia

@swirrlygrrl This is going to turn into something like those online pharmacies that are always trying to sell me Canadian prescription drugs, isn't it?

coconuts

@swirrlygrrl Oh thank god! I was all set to head to the nearest Loblaws and stock up on the cupcakes.

area@twitter

@swirrlygrrl YUS. I would be happy to organize a Samoas for Zingers exchange.

MilesofMountains

I've never had a twinkie, or any other Hostess food (I have natural-food obsessed parents), and now I'm totally torn. Should I get one and eat it, just because I never will otherwise? Or are they really so gross I shouldn't bother?

iceberg

@MilesofMountains I vote for Really Gross, Don't Bother. Get something from Little Debbie instead.

Ophelia

@MilesofMountains They're so gross, but if you want junk food, the little mini Drake's coffee cakes are pretty good, too.

Bittersweet

@MilesofMountains Hohos and chocolate Donettes are edible. But I'd vote for Entenmann's as your junk food alternative.

fondue with cheddar

@MilesofMountains I agree with the "Twinkies are gross" consensus.

Hostess < Little Debbie < Entenmann's < Tastykake (though Entenmann's and Tastykake are pretty damn close)

Verity

@MilesofMountains Me neither (UK-based, although I bet if I lived in the US my parents would have refused to buy them anyway) and am wondering the same thing. American media always made Twinkies sound so appealing.

fondue with cheddar

@Verity When you need to dress your dessert like a cowboy in order to sell it to kids, it's probably not that great in the first place.

area@twitter

@MilesofMountains I'm going to second the Entenmann's/Tastykake route. Entenmann's crumb coffee cake is deeeeeeelicious.

fondue with cheddar

@area@twitter YES. My parents used to buy that every weekend when my grandparents came over for dinner and cards.

I also love their cheese danish twist!

anachronistique

@area@twitter Entenmann's crumb cake is my madeleine. (Tea with my great-aunt Gertrude, the cake on mustard yellow Fiestaware, my mother trying to sneak all the crumbs when no one was looking.)

area@twitter

@anachronistique @fondue with cheddar YES, Entenmann's is memory food! When we went up to my Baba's house in New York, my parents would allow us to buy Entenmann's donuts, as a treat. I would nom the hell out of the crumb-topped ones, and sometimes the chocolate-covered yellow cake ones. And whenever there is a big family breakfast gathering we buy Entenmann's crumb cake and sit around and drink coffee and chat. ::nostalgic sighs::

fondue with cheddar

@anachronistique @area@twitter great memories! My grandpa would always have a second piece and claim he was just trying to "even it off". :) And I loved scooping up all the crumbs that fell between the edge of the tin and the box. We ate ours Entenmann's on these:

jane lane

@fondue with cheddar ha! My grandparents have served me Entenmann's on those same plates many times.

baked bean

@fondue with cheddar I think everyone has those plates.

Barry Grant

I'm so heartened to see all the comments about union busting. Twinkies? No great loss. Decent jobs? Muy importante.

dennishobson

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention. madeira palstica71
