The Agony and the Ecstasy of Michael Sheen's Eyeballs

The feisty Michael Sheen (did you know he punched Jeremy Northam for being a dick to Kate Beckinsale?) talks to Vulture about the horrors of being a red-eyed monster, which will be a challenge for those of us who cannot put in contacts or hold our eyes open for any kind of examination without the aid of a Clockwork Orange contraption:

How bad are they?
They wanted the whites of our eyes to be affected as well, so rather than being the size of normal contact lenses, these are like half the size of golf balls because they have to cover the entire eye. Just to put them in, you have to do them in two parts: They lift the upper eyelid up and put the first part in, then lift the bottom of my eyelid and then put the other part in, and then they kind of adjust it.

Are you sure you're not describing torture?
It is! It really is like torture because everything in you is trying to stop it from happening, and yet you know that if it doesn't happen the first time, you've just got to do it again and it gets harder and harder. And then you've got to have eyedrops put in all day as well, and then little bits of the stuff that's in the air get in there and you have to wash them out. Then everything goes a bit reddish because you can only see red, and you lose a lot of your peripheral vision and you can't see properly, and your eyes are constantly trying to focus, because it puts your eyes slightly out of focus as well, so it gives you a headache after a while. So they're pretty intense, those!

Probably you should also not read this if you've experienced actual torture, because it would be offensive to you, but it seems like if you've made it this far already, it's a little late.

Can they not just CGI that in? We're pretty sure Bella wasn't really drinking human blood out of a styrofoam cup.

The only thing that makes me feel okay about the break-up of McGosling = Michael Sheen

@Anne Helen Petersen They do seem super cute together. Plus he's so smart and funny.

maybe partying will help

Michael Sheen is so glorious though.

for a minute i was thinking of martin sheen and the part about punching jeremy northam had me impressed.

@wearitcounts I...was also thinking of Martin Sheen, apparently.
Who the hell is Michael Sheen, then? Because there's only room for one, maybe two Sheens in my head. And an Estevez.

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher

Unrelated, and more interesting than any American Sheen you can possibly imagine.

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher he's Wesley Snipes on 30 Rock!

I mean if you heard the name "Wesley Snipes" you'd think he was a stuffy british guy! Every time!

@Danzig! OH okay. Man, that dude cannot catch a break with names.

RK Fire

@City_Dater: I don't know, Martin Sheen's history of political activism makes him pretty interesting!

My eyeballs hurt in sympathy.

Also, never thought of Jeremy Northam as an a-hole. Illusions dashed.

maybe partying will help

Seriously, in my head he is real genteel and shit.

@Bittersweet My eyes are watering super hard. Aaaaagh.

@Bittersweet I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding. Mr. Knight-- erm, Jeremy Northam would never say anything out of turn. Right?

And all that fuss was for Twilight. I mean, dude. Twilight.

Is this where I get to share the story about how that styrofoam cup scene nearly made me throw up and I had to leave the theater for a moment?

Guess that's what I get for paying to hate-watch these things in theaters.

If no one is forcing that boy with all the abs to hold still for painstaking wolf-hair applications, it certainly seems like the actors on team vampire could have CGI red eyes.

@City_Dater Yes, they could. But it would take A LOT of time which means A LOT of money. And a team of people. And then they would have to match where the eyes look on every frame... and then they would have to make the colour match between each shot, (you use one colour but then the ambient colours in the surrounding environment effect the result). And then you'd have a team of red eyed people trying to get it all working under a tight deadline... without the multi million dollar paycheck. So I salute actors that make my job less painful. Thank you Sheenie.... but you do get paid for the discomfort

@wilson@twitter: Exactly what I was going to say. Hella'spensive to do that with CG.

Aw, sclera contacts aren't that bad! I mean, you kind of have to shove them in, but they're still easier for me to handle than regular-size contacts.

Hilary Lehman@twitter

I find this viscerally upsetting, because Jeremy Northam being mean = MR. KNIGHTLEY being mean.

RK Fire

@Hilary Lehman@twitter: Also, finding out that Mr. Knightley got punched in the face for being mean to Kate Beckinsale!

@RK Fire I just remembered that Ms. Beckinsale starred in a PBS version of Emma a few years after the Gwyneth Paltrow movie...which means that Mr. Knightley was mean to Emma, and another gentleman (Mr. Elton? Mr. Churchill?) punched him in the face. That makes everyone in my perfect-imaginary-Austen-world cry.

He's going to be in a show with Lizzy Caplan? SOLD.

I guess I'm really childishly naive but I am SO disappointed this doesn't have to do with a person with naturally red eyes :c

My husband looks like an Italian version of Michael Sheen.

I do not look like a midwestern version of Rachel McAdams, tho :(

@parallel-lines I mean, unless that's weird and nosy and creepy (IT TOTALLY IS, apologies)

Claire Zulkey@twitter

I like Rachel McAdams way more for being with him.

very good website:

The website wholesale for many kinds of fashion shoes, like the nike, jordan, prada, also including the jeans, shirts, bags, hat and the decorations.

I remember Robert Pattinson gave an interview where he discussed how uncomfortable his contacts were, and people acted like he was such a brat for complaining. I felt it was totally justified. (And if I had his level of money, I would've just demanded everyone's eyes stay their natural color, because let's be real about the level of artistic integrity this requires.)

@Regina Phalange I think parts of that interview are included in this wonderful video that I saw this morning. It's a mashup of interviews where he talks about how much he hates Twilight.
