"Some people look at prehistoric European figurines with exaggeratedly feminine anatomy and see pornography. Do you?"
art, pornography, archaeology, what is happening in slide #4?, new scientist
Did anyone else look at the bear for a while trying to figure out how it could be dirty before reading the caption and finding out it's not?
@SarahP no, but seriously, what is going on in #4?
@Jane Marie I DON'T EVEN SEE ANYTHING
It looks like...a stingray? Or a horseshoe crab. Ooh, sexy.
@Jane Marie Literally the crack in the rock looks more vaginal than the actual carving. What???
@Jane Marie It's a circle with a stick next to it...which somehow looks like female genitalia? I don't even understand which part is supposed to be what.
@frigwiggin: Horseshoe crabs are hot.
@MilesofMountains I think it's supposed to be a p going into a v?
@MilesofMountains IN MY DAY ALL WE HAD TO MASTURBATE TO WAS A CARVING OF A CIRCLE WITH A STICK NEXT TO IT. DAMN KIDS AIN'T GOT NO IMAGINATION THESE DAYS.
@Jane Marie I was thinking Pac Man.
#4 is an upside-down on-off button for a rock-computer.
IF OOG SEE BIG BOOBY WOMAN HAVE SEX IN CAVE DRAWING, HE DEVELOP UNREALISTIC EXPECTATION THAT ALL WOMAN HAVE BIG BOOBY AND HAVE SEX ON WOOLLY MAMMOTH. IT HURT WHOLE CAVEHOLD. FAMILY UNIT GO BIG BOOM. HOW YOU BE GOOD CAVE-FEMINIST IF YOU LOOK AT BIG BOOBY DRAWING?
@Emby: Heee, "Dino".
If that looks like porn to you, you've probably never been on the internet before.
I WISH ladies in porn looked like that!
If you teach Art History 101, Image #3 is most likely going to be in the first or second class. And when you tell your students we don't know exactly what they were... fertility symbols, part of a rite, religious, etc - 100% of the time one of the students will suggest it was porn.
(not safe for cave)
Would these people also classify medical textbooks as pornography?
Boobs, schmoobs. I'm more interested in the Venus of Willendorf's hairstyle. Is it hair or is it a woven hat? Is it a stylized version of natural hair or is it an elaborate series of braids? I WANT TO KNOW
@fondue with cheddar I too want to know! Every time I see her it just sets me off musing about what the early Europeans' hair texture would've been.
@Emmanuelle Cunt Yay, I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
Ya got me, but to be fair I can see pornography in all the inanimate objects on my desk.
It drives me crazy how people rarely consider "maybe women made these." It's always dudes making sexy ladies (but if you see art of men with big dicks, it's never ladies making sexy dudes, it's men celebrating strength/masculinity). Like women can't draw big tits and go "I am AWESOME, HUH!"
I read an article recently about how there's evidence that women were making jewelry and gasp shock we never considered that women could be artisans/fine metal workers. And I was like... but the women are the ones wearing the jewelry in your own theory, why don't they make what they like, like clothes?
Image four is Pacman. Isn't it?
@tea sonata this is exactly what I saw!
I hope it's not porn; i have a miniature Venus of Willendorf on my desk at work. (Also a hand-crocheted Fraggle and a plastic Cyberman)
Honestly, this stuff is too familiar to me, and I think I may have been raised on too much goddess theology, to see it as anything but religious/devotional art. I mean, I can conceive of the possibility, but that's not what I see. Dunno who made it, though, and I certainly don't automatically attribute it to dudes.
