Hey, It's Smiling Bob

He stood in front of a mirror and practiced, ramping up the grin’s voltage and then holding it. When his wife got home, he showed her the smile. She said it was the stupidest thing she’d ever seen.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be famous for being in a commercial? I've always wondered what it's like being an actor whose grandkids see you in Viagra commercials, etc. [Via]

Valley Girl

Just read this via The Awl! Super interesting, and I can't believe Progressive Flo is 42. Looking good, gurl.

Blackwatch Plaid

@Valley Girl She was on Mad Men at one point. Once you know what she looks like out of the Flo makeup, you start seeing her everywhere.

Princess Slayer

@Valley Girl She was also Files and Records at Wolfram and Hart!

JessicaLovejoy

Bob has a life and a family? Oh God, it's like you're at Disney World and Goofy just took off his head.

OhMyGoshYouGuys

Now I know how Henry Pollard feels every time someone makes him say, "Are we having fun yet?"

fondue with cheddar

His smile is even bigger than Joe Isuzu's.

@fondue with cheddar (formerly jen325) Ha! I commented before I got to the part about Joe Isuzu. When I was a kid I did an impression of him that may have been terrible or may have been great, but my mom thought it was hilarious so I did it often.

Interesting read, but I wish this piece had touched more on the scary part where the public tends to think of these actors as the actual parts they play. They went there a bit, with Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals' legal struggles and the online comments taking it out on Smiling Bob...but it's so different from other kinds of celebrity.

olivebee

@yeah-elle Agreed. I thought this was incredibly interesting, but I wish there were more quotes and/or stories from the interviews with the actors about what it's actually like. The part that really hit the point home is where they were talking about how the public couldn't know that the actor from the Verizon commercials is gay. Homosexuality with tv and film actors is different because there isn't a brand (and brand's reputation) involved.

yeah-elle

@olivebee Exactly, it's strange to me that people have a really hard time separating the actors behind the spokesperson from the actual brand, especially when you consider that most of the time, spokespeople are so over the top!

Lily Rowan

@olivebee I know someone who went out with that guy! And didn't recognize him.

Biketastrophy

@yeah-elle It doesn't just stop at the actors, I work for one of the companies in the article and when you tell anyone that the tagline gets quoted back at you CONSTANTLY

Blondsak

A friend of mine from college looks exactly like Flo, and when it first got big she was asked on a daily basis for months to quote lines, and everyone who met her commented on the likeness. I think she found it rather amusing, but it would have annoyed the heck out of me. I guess this goes for anyone who looks like a very recognizable celebrity...

pettycoat

Was anyone thinking of Henry from Party Down throughout this whole article?

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?!
