Beautiful Women in Pretty Dresses

Emmys! Did you watch? The Times has an entrancing red-carpet gallery, Vulture has another, and HuffPo has them arranged by viewer ranking. People looked pretty good! Including Anna and Lady Mary.

In unrelated news, NPR is currently streaming Flying Lotus's new album, Until the Quiet Comes.

PatatasBravas

Not a huge fan of Hayden, Heidi and Lena's dress choices.

Kelly's lilac hair is pretty sweet, though. I wish I were more hair-courageous!

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@PatatasBravas Nooooo I loved Hayden's!

Connie Britton, on the other hand, looked like she was running for prom queen.

Also, totally agree on Heidi. Her dress was screaming "Lookit me! I'm so hot! I don't have a husband anymore and I don't care!"

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

Also to which Lena are you referring?

aliceandstuff

@PatatasBravas

I really wonder if Lena's choice was intentional or if her stylist was all "cover up that fattie".

SarahP

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me Yeahhhh Lena Headley, amazing, Lena Dunham... looks like upholstered furniture. :(

PatatasBravas

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me Lena Dunham, sorry! Should have specified.

Hellcat

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me I can't remember Heidi's but your comment is making me laugh too much--there are tears as I try to stifle myself at my desk!

Megasus

@SarahP I didn't think that Lena Dunham's dress was that bad. Especially considering some of her other RC choices. Her hair and makeup was defintely great though.
Lena Headey is perfect and is allowed to do whatever the fuck she wants.

Hellcat

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me OH MY! Pretty color (and woman, of course) but it looks a bit like a more risque Carol Brady nightgown.

Poubelle

@Megano! I think it was a pretty dress, but way too young for her. On someone half her age? Sure! If one of the Modern Family girl had worn it, I'd be all, "that's lovely and age-appropriate." (Actually, how old are they now? It might even be a bit young for them at this point.) It's not age-appropriate for a 26-year-old.

Ellie

@SarahP Yeah furniture was the first thing I thought of too. That is one bizarre dress. Alternatively, she looks like a porcelain figurine.

like a rabid squirrel

@Ellie That dress needs several yards of fabric removed to even come CLOSE to flattering.

olivebee

There were a surprisingly high number that I actually really liked this year. But I think my favorites are Emily Van Camp (though I might be biased because it looks similar to my wedding dress), Ginnifer Goodwin, Leslie Mann, and Jane Levy. Jessica Pare's was simple and beautiful, but not really any "wow" factor.

olivebee

@olivebee On second thought, I love Leslie Mann's silhouette, but I'm not diggin' the mac & cheese color. Also, I would have enjoyed and appreciated Zosia Mamet's unusual dress more without those weird calf cut-outs.

SarahP

Wow, Jena Malone looks all grown up! Though I only saw her in Saved and Donnie Darko, which were both forever ago, so I guess she would look more grown up.

I'm surprised by how much I like Lena Headey's dress! (That style is normally not my thing.)

The color combinations of Kelly Osbourne's hair and dress is fantastic.

travelmugs

@SarahP She is going to be Joanna Masen in the next Hunger Games!

parallel-lines

@SarahP I hated the purple hair at first but it's really growing on me. She's been rocking it really hard lately.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

OH NO LUCY LIU WHAT HAPPENED

PatatasBravas

SHE IS A SEXY LADY AND SHE IS ALSO LOOKING LIKE A SHINY FUTURISTIC APPLE PRODUCT, I LOVE IT

SarahP

@PatatasBravas I love it too!

Daisy Razor

@SarahP I love any dress that could potentially blind my enemies.

Hellcat

Am I nutty or was Julianne Moore's dress pretty damn cool--and a color that looked really good on her in particular?

PatatasBravas

@Hellcat I loved the bright yellows all over the place!

SarahP

@Hellcat I thought the dress was cool, but I wasn't crazy about the color, on her or in general.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@PatatasBravas Julie Bowen's dress was the color of a highlighter. And I LOVED IT.

olivebee

@Hellcat Yep. Not many can pull off that color, but I think she did. I thought the silhouette of the dress was awesome.

Hellcat

@PatatasBravas Yeah, there was a lot of yellow, wasn't there?

@Sarah P I loved the simple shape/cut of it, and the appreciation for the color came later--though I am not sure what I would think if I saw one of my friends in it (probably something like, "You are way overdressed for this old-man bar we're in!"). But Julianne Moore looks beautiful no matter what...

Killerpants

@Hellcat Oh you're not wrong. She nailed it all over the place. Totally stunning.

datalass

@Hellcat I loved it so much. The silouette evoked old Hollywood (fitted, flared skirt, long sleeves) and the color kept it up-to-date.

SarahP

Kate Mara's dress is really pretty, too! But Portia de Rossi's pantsuit thing confuses me.

Luci Lui looks like she's from the future! (In a good way.)

PatatasBravas

@SarahP The Pantsuit of Confusion was... bold?

Daisy Razor

I must be going soft in my old age, because the only dress I really hated was Lena Dunham's. All the rest fall either in "spectacular" or "You look nice, honey!" for me.

Gwdihw

The Huffpo link takes us to Vulture!

Edith Zimmerman

@l'esprit de l'escalier Doh, sorry, fixed!

Gracefully and Grandly

I thought Christina Hendricks looked the best that she has on a red carpet in ages - just such a major bombshell. Loved Leslie Mann and Ginnifer Goodwin's dress. And I thought Ashley Judd's dress looked like the bridesmaid dress Julia Roberts wore in My Best Friend's Wedding.

olivebee

@Gracefully and Grandly I thought Ashley Judd might be the worst dressed, IMO. That dress was not modern, nor flattering, nor sophisticated. Yikes.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@olivebee And the hair! It completely threw off her (naturally very aesthetically pleasing) proportions.

Gwdihw

@Gracefully and Grandly Ginnifer Goodwin's shoes!!!

Scandyhoovian

@Gracefully and Grandly I agree! Christina Hendricks is so hit and miss on the red carpet, and I know she's made mention of the fact that it's just hard to find good dresses for her proportions (she can't rent like others can, she's said before in interviews, because they don't make samples in her size). I feel like most of the time when she looks uncomfortable on the runway it's that she's had to torture her breasts into a bodice they don't quite fit into. I'm glad to see her looking fitted. :)

skyslang

@Scandyhoovian Oh but it didn't fit! Check out the slideshow at the times. Christina is hanging out all over the place. It makes me crazy a designer won't make a dress that will actually fit her, so is so gorgeous.

harebell

@skyslang It didn't fit even though it had that awful buckled belt over the draped fabric? Oh, too bad. She is ridiculously beautiful -- somebody should be making dresses *for* her.

Scandyhoovian

@skyslang CURSES! The only pic I've seen of it was from an angle at which it looked like it pretty much was properly sized. I'm sad to hear it wasn't :(

Why designers aren't falling over themselves to put her in a gorgeous, properly-fitted dress is beyond me. She's incredible!

werewolfbarmitzvah

I'm giving Padma Lakshmi the grand prize for the night. Runners-up include Julianne Moore, Kelly Osbourne, Jessica Pare, and Kat Dennings (WOWZA WOWZA).

Meanwhile, Lena Dunham's outfit is almost making me a little angry! I mean, her hair looks nice, her makeup looks fine, so WHY would she wear that horrible dress?? I don't understand! Is she willfully trying to choose the most unflattering dress she can find? With all of the cute dresses out there in existence? Good god!

werewolfbarmitzvah

@werewolfbarmitzvah One other thing: is Nicole Kidman ever going to have red hair again? I mean, the blonde hair looks all right, but the red was magical. And the curliness! Will she ever be curly again? I want the red and the curly to come back!

datalass

@werewolfbarmitzvah I read somewhere (highly authoritative, right?) that Nicole's hair is now almost entirely white and that the processing that it would take to make it red and/or curly would essentially destroy it.

trappedinabay

@werewolfbarmitzvah - Seriously, does Kat Dennings have ALL the boobs?

HoliandIvy

@werewolfbarmitzvah
I have heard on ~fairly~ good authority that she doesn't actually have the curls that she goes out curly in and that those are the result of a smoothing blowout and a curling iron, as her own curls are less smooth and even. Photos stills from her first movies (like BMX bandits) have a very different type of curl.
http://www.2dayfm.com.au/style-glamour/fashion/fashion-flashbacks
That would make datalass make sense, because that is a LOT of processing, especially on grey hair.

themegnapkin

Michelle Dockery! Why does she even try to wear modern clothes? She should dress as Lady Mary, all the time.

pointy

@themegnapkin But it looked like her dress had pockets, which is awesome.

Scandyhoovian

Not a fan of Jena Malone's, January Jones's, or Ginnifer Goodwin's. Not loving Hayden Panettiere's either. I think the worst one out there was actually Elizabeth Moss. Her hair is so light now that it matches her skin and she looks completely washed out, and her dress also looks like it's made of cheap polyester. Total miss, as far as I'm concerned. Lena Dunham also looks ridiculous, but then again, I think she's a ridiculous person in general, so maybe that fits.

LOVING Sarah Paulson's dress, Lena Headey looks incredible, I want to steal Anna Chlumsky's dress face hair dress, of COURSE Heidi Klum's got two slits, of COURSE she does, and I love the color of Allison Williams' dress, whoever she is.

Does Mario Lopez age?

almighty jugs

I don't know what to think about Julianne Moore's dress but GODDAMN is she radiant.

Also I feel like Alec Baldwin is only getting more attractive as time goes by and it's kind of terrifying

trappedinabay

@almighty jugs They both bathe in the blood of virgins. There's no other way, right?

charlesbois

Best: Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Padma Lakshmi, Jane Krakowski, Kerry Washington, Christine Baranski (just the legs alone are amazing on her!)

Worst: Ashley Judd, Portia di Rossi, Julianne Hough, and whereas she looked incredibly fit, I hated Sofia Vergara's vegas nightmare

mynamebackwards

lady mary's dress is SO wrinkly! that's driving me crazy

hungrybee

@mynamebackwards Anna was too busy with her own dress, evidently.

Slutface

I find Kelly Osbourne rather insufferable.

Slutface

Reid Scott...can we get him to Magic Mike us?

Lucienne

@Slutface Sometimes I have to watch Veep episodes twice because I miss what happens while I ogle Reid Scott.

Life is hard.

parallel-lines

If you're going to wear strapless it has to fit like whoa, and Zoey's fits like 'whoa, you are going to be topless soon'. Also, what is going on at the bottom, it looks like a bunch of puppies chewed it up.Kat Dennings is in the same boat--honey, trip on the front of your dress and you will be topless.

Allison Williams green dress is so on trend and gorgeous I gasped a little bit.

Hot Doom

@parallel-lines Hahaaa I like Zooey's pose int he NYT photos, like she is ready to stomp her foot and storm off.

skyslang

@parallel-lines NO MORE STRAPLESS. They never fit, and with so little going on up top, you might as well be wearing a bath towel. I'm so bored with strapless! Thankfully only about 10% were wearing strapless, as opposed to about 90% two years ago. Hopefully it's ending soon!

Megasus

Tina Fey looked SLAMMIN'

dj pomegranate

@Megano! Seriously. She rocked it.

parallel-lines

Edie Falco, we all like that Stella McCartney dress, but everyone else has worn it--it was on 'Who Wore it Best' two weeks ago with five other people in the same dress :/

harebell

@parallel-lines oh, I don't know --- it fit (what I guess to be) her personality.
Knowing what all those other people wore seems a little over-the-top.

On the other hand, maybe your comments will become part of a movement to bring back couture and individual design & seamstressing -- in which case, applause!

Killerpants

@parallel-lines She looked so damn good in it though, and I love the dress.

parallel-lines

@harebell That's be nice! I'm sure a lot of people are renting/borrowing their dresses so tailoring isn't an option, but if you're going to a major event it should fit.

Kat's dress...I just don't think it looks nice when people's boobs are spilling out of their dress in every direction--in some pictures there's boob in her armpits, it looks like they're on a rampage. If you're outitting Christina Hendricks (known cleavage abuser) that you might want to dial it down a notch.

cuminafterall

Padma's hair flip in the New York Times photo is the best thing.

Hot Doom

Here to talk some trash: I LOVE Ginnifer Goodwin's dress, but it's wearing the hell out of her, rather than the other way around.

Also...I really wanted to like Christina Hendricks' look, and her make up and hair are radiant, but that dress... I don't care if it was custom-fitted, it still looks way too tight, especially under her arms. The dress itself is fine looking, and by all means, she should flaunt what she's got, but the overall silhouette would have been just right had it been let out by an inch or two in the side bodice.

Hot Doom

@LolaLaBalc However, in the Daily mail link, Julian Fellowes' wife Emma, in the turban-cum-headband? So Mame, I love it.

cuminafterall

@LolaLaBalc She wore a turban again?? She definitely wore one last year as well-- it must be her Thing.

sudden but inevitable betrayal

@LolaLaBalc I agree about Christina Hendricks...it looks like they squished her boobs up so much (as usual) that they're retreating out her armpits.

parallel-lines

@sudden but inevitable betrayal Her boobs always look like they're getting shoved around and bound up, I feel bad for them.

sudden but inevitable betrayal

@parallel-lines Yeah! She is so gorgeous but always looks so uncomfortable. SURELY there is someone in Hollywood who could dress her and not murder her boobs?!

Ellie

@LolaLaBalc The dress looks like a shower curtain wrapped around her. I was not a fan at all. I also think the color is not good.

frigwiggin

Jim Parsons, is that a velvet blazer?

frigwiggin

Michael C. Hall, I like your colored shoelaces.

lisma

Love all the yellows, loved Jena Malone, Ginnifer Goodwin, Sofia Vergara (because seriously, she looks like a mermaid), and Kerry Washington, and Jon Hamm, obviously.

Ellie

So most of these are hideous. I liked January Jones's (though she looks a little like a Halloween witch) and Kristen Wiig's. Jessica Pare looked nice too but not really interesting or special. What the FUCK is Portia di Rossi wearing? She looks like she is dressed as the Creature from the Black Lagoon, either that or a flesh tone mummy.

Kat Dennings' dress was my favorite. Yes, it was low cut, but it seemed to fit properly. The color and ruching detail are excellent and her lipstick is bomb as well.

Regina Phalange

Allison Williams looks JUST like Anna Chlumsky in the face, right?

ALSO: Lena Dunham's dress made her look SO TALL. I didn't love it, but as a fellow shortie, I could completely see the appeal.
