Meet Desperate Debra

For the girl who already has Chatty Cathy and Polly Pocket, consider Desperate Debra, the C-section stimulating model. No, she's actually an invaluable tool for doctors in training, but the footage is just a little startling. So much rooting!

oh my goddddddddddddd this makes me so happy I was on the other side of the curtain in a drugged haze when this happened to me IRL.

Bittersweet

@iceberg I'm happy I had a scheduled C-section and no labor. And a senior OB doing the cutting and rooting. And a curtain. And drugs. Drugs.

I'm Right on Top of that, Rose

I know "Birth is Beautiful" but damn. DAMN.

Ophelia

That uterus doesn't seem to have enough teeth. Or venom.

City_Dater

AAAAAHHHH! It's like they're hunting for a ring of keys at the bottom of a knapsack.

Megasus

@City_Dater omg I know! I had to stop watching!

Nicole Cliffe

@City_Dater Oh, that is...so great.

Nicole Cliffe

I want to see a Regretful Ricki, writhing in the mind-ending pain of natural childbirth.

jk! <3 u, natural childbirth.

finguns

@Nicole Cliffe I wish I could like this x 10.

EternalFootwoman

I've seen enough scheduled and unscheduled C-sections to be able to say that they are not easy surgeries. There is a lot more force than I'd ever expect, both in getting to the baby and getting it out. I'm not surprised that the one doctor said her arm was shaking!

damselfish

@EternalFootwoman Most important thing I learned from first aid: there is a lot of force involved in medicine. I knew it, coming from a medical family (doctors out the wazoo), but it was totally different to experience it. "But I'll hurt them!" "Damselfish, I can barely feel what you're doing." "...Oh."

Ophelia

@damselfish Yeah - learning that effective CPR routinely cracks ribs totally threw me for a loop.

EternalFootwoman

@Ophelia Yeah, I have a really hard time every time I renew my CPR certification and have to do infant CPR. I'm always too gentle, thought I've been reassured that when I have to do it for real, the adrenaline will help me out.

TheDragon

OH GOD I HOPE I TAKE AFTER MY MAMA.
(Three kids, less than 12 hours of labor. Total.)
PLEASE LORD, PLEASE LET ME TAKE AFTER MOM

amitygardens@twitter

I just want to know why she's "desperate"? Is it because she wants to get this baby out of her, or just to have the baby at all?

TheDragon

@Arielle Clemence@twitter She's looking for Susan

social theory

@Arielle Clemence@twitter came down here just to say that. certainly a questionable word choice.

fondue with cheddar

@Arielle Clemence@twitter It's the evening of December 31 and she really wants the tax credit.

Though I really also came down here to say she was seeking Susan.

verklempt

@Arielle Clemence@twitter it's because the model simulates EMERGENCY or "stat" c-sections.

fondue with cheddar

I really want to paint eyes above the pretend incision. The belly looks so happy! Like an axolotl!

Angry Panda

I totally read that as Desperate Zebra!

This is such an awesome video, very educational for practicing medical students. - James Stuckey
