In an Old House in Helsinki That Was Covered With Vines, Lived Four Little Girls in One Straight Line

"The general feeling in the series is very light and happy so I sometimes forget that my initial feeling when starting to make the images was quite sad. I thought the images would speak of letting go, losing moments and even people in time, nostalgia, etc. There are only a few images (like grandad, where in the latter image there is a person missing) that actually seem to bear this sadness."
—Finnish photographer Wilma Hurskainen recreates photographs of herself and her three sisters.

TheDragon

I loved how DEAD on some of their facial expressions were!

Bloodrocuted

@The Kendragon Eternally Grumpy Dad.

Lily Rowan

@The Kendragon It was also funny to me how inappropriate some of the expressions look on adults! Like, our cultural norms allow a kid to give the camera the side-eye, but not a woman.

MY PEOPLE

Scandyhoovian

that's all I can say, the office network won't let me go to the link :(

double paw?

love this! my bro, three male cousins, and i did this a couple years ago and recreated a shot of all of us on a couch from almost 20 years ago (what?!). it was totally worth it to see my 24 year old cousin sitting on my 34 year old cousin's lap.

Inkling

They still have matching shirts! <3

Tuna Surprise

It's cute...but isn't the adult version of a sailor dress a romper?

Inkling

@Tuna Surprise
ROMPERS ARE SEXY, HUSH YOU.

harebell

I wish I knew where the adult sisters got their amazing straw hats! (yes, scrolled down that far).

JadedStone

WHY DID THAT LAST ONE MAKE ME TEAR UP?
The one in the bathtub? OMG.

Lily Rowan

@Jade I sort of teared up somewhere in the middle, who knows why.

Ophelia

@Jade Me too! I think because the "kids in a bathtub" is so quintessentially a "nostalgic childhood photo" in my mind? And it looks so VULNERABLE when it's adults.

annveal

@Jade But how did they all fit in there???

olivebee

I love this!!! When I was a senior in high school, I recreated a bunch of childhood photos of me, but I was an only child, so looking at the same thing with a group of adorable sisters is much, much better. You can feel the energy between them and almost distinguish the different personalities in the group.

meetapossum

@olivebee Yeah, this photo set made me wish I had siblings. (Well, siblings who lived with me and were close to my age.)

frigwiggin

I will never get tired of this conceit. It makes me feel all misty and happy, and also a little sad because things have changed so much since I was a kid that my brother and I would probably not be able to do this. (Never mind my parents, who divorced when I was a year or two old.) Although I would love to try to make my brother recreate his fifth-grade school picture, where he'd hyperextended his neck playing football and has his head all jerked over on one shoulder, smiling with painful awkwardness.

bluebears

I love those sailor themed dresses so much it bothers me.

Lucienne

@bluebears I want them all. I want to wear nothing but sailor dresses until fall.

Ophelia

I'd do this, except we'd have to go back to being clad almost entirely in bad 80s neon.

Also, HOW CUTE are 80s winter clothes? I really want one of those fair isle scarf/poncho things.

Ellie

This is sooooo great. I stared at these photos obsessively! I think the (usually) red haired sister looks the most like her childhood self. And yes, in the birthday cake photo the expression are really remarkable. I wonder how many they had to take for these.
