Not Technically A "French Manicure" For Klutzes

Finally a way to make the tops of your nails a different color(s) than the bottoms. I'm all for the nude base, especially if you want to get a little weirder with the polka dot color scheme. (Fluorescent yellow/silver/hot pink/actual diamonds.)

There are dotting tools??

Also, does anyone else like how the hand model has her fingers dance (or flex, or whatever you want to call it) at the end of the video?

ETA: I found a youtube video on DIY dotting tools.. in case anyone was interested.

okaycrochet

@RK Fire The rockin' and rollin' finger finale was the highlight for me, too. Holy dancing dotted digits Batman!

SarahDances

@RK Fire Yup. I know what I'm doing this afternoon. (Bobby pins! Straight pins! These are things I have! Hooray!)

RK Fire

@SarahDances: Yes! I panicked at first because I don't have a dotting tool, but I do have plenty of bobby pins to sacrifice to the Cause.

redheaded&crazy

okay so i fucking love this look.

but my attention span is giving me some serious side-eye for even thinking of attempting it.

RK Fire

@redheaded&crazie: Yeah, I want to try this on my toenails, but my actual nail art competency is at level .5: trying not to get nail polish all over my actual toes. I think I may actually give it a go tonight or tomorrow regardless of any actual skill or dexterity.

sparrow303

@RK Fire The answer to this is to go slowly and clean up as you go with precision tip Q-Tips. These are a new and specific kind that come to a point at the end instead of a fat, fluffy ball, and they are the BOMB for doing your own nails.

If you REALLY screw up, wait til all else is dry and then dip a q-tip in remover and be SUPER careful. I do my own nails all the time, including for the wedding I was just in, and mine looked just as nice as the professional manicures the other girls shelled out for.

Finish with Seche Vite (thanks Jane!) to keep your fab results around longer, and voila! You're a pro.

charlesbois

@fishiefishfish hell to the yes Seche Vite!

RK Fire

@fishiefishfish: Thanks for these tips! I had tried regular q-tips to help clean things up but I was not nearly as careful as I needed to be.

sparrow303

@RK Fire The precision ones make it a lot easier. That, and practice! :)

Craftastrophies

@RK Fire I just get it everywhere and then I have a shower and rub the skin I got polish on after and it comes right off. I am not careful enough to not get it on myself AND apply it nicely, so I go for the latter.

RK Fire

@Craftastrophies: That was my usual MO but My last toenail painting job was a bit of a disaster since I decided to try cool things, then freaked out, and painted over my toenails (and toes) approximately five times, which was then a bitch to fix.

I win.

Ophelia

I'm trying to decide if I can do this with only the truly random nail polish colors that are currently in my bathroom...

PotatoPotato

@Ophelia: Still waiting for pics of this...

yeah-elle

This is cute! I do a weird spiky french manicure by taking a piece of tape and cutting it on a diagonal like this: [ \ ] and then centering the piece of tape on my nail so it looks like an arrow pointing outwards like this: |/\| and then I paint over it and peel the tape off! It looks like this: link to a picture.

RK Fire

@yeah-elle: That looks really awesome!

sparrow303

@yeah-elle Pretty! I am obsessed with this tape-based nail art thing. Gotta pick up a roll and try this out.

Slutface

@yeah-elle I've learned so many different ways to use tape for manicures via Pinterest. I like to paint my nails at work when I'm bored using Sally Hansen Insta-Dry and a roll of tape. The possibilities are endless!

redheaded&crazy

i definitely want to get some of these little nail tool thingys though. dotters and liners and whatever else.

charlesbois

The vid won't work for me. :(

So I'll just tell you I did a neon french manicure this weekend, and I used reinforcements (those little "doughnut" stickers used to reinforce sheets in a three-ring binder) as guides, and it came out great. The bad news is I posted it to Pinterest and someone called me "piggy fingers." I wanted to punch them in the face. Didn't make my manicure any less freaking awesome though.

empathicalist

@charlesbois Good idea, and great job. And yes, she is a bitch.

RK Fire

@charlesbois: Co-signing to minijen, and I just followed you on Pinterest. Haters gonna hate.

charlesbois

@charlesbois thank you both!

Jane Marie

@charlesbois one of the best looks going! i love it.

frigwiggin

@charlesbois Uhhh, what. I just--I will never understand Rude People. Those look awesome!

Feminist Killjoy

@charlesbois wait it looks really cute!!! thirded, courtney montgomery is a bitch

charlesbois

@charlesbois @everyone Well, I'll never have slim and tapering fingers, but I love my little blunt nails on the end of my paw. So thanks for all the cheers!

Bon Vivant

@charlesbois she sucks. You rock. The neon tips look super!

cabot_cove_syndrome

@charlesbois Ooh girl, I am not on the Pinterest, nor will I ever attempt to do my own nails AND I am months late to this partee but I signed on here specifically to tell you that I second, third, fourth, fifth Courtney's biotchiness. Really, Courtney? In what universe is it OK to insult a stranger [with super awesome neon tips] like this? No.

frigwiggin

Maaaan, I haven't even gotten around to that marble-nails thing yet.

Is It a Hat?

@frigwiggin My brain can't even comprehend how people do the marble nails. What kind of nail polish sorcery is this?

Oh, squiggles

@Is It a Hat? I have seen it done, where they float different colors of paint on water, swirl it, and then just dip the nail in.

Is It a Hat?

@Awesomely Nonfunctional Ah it all makes sense now! I thought maybe water was involved, but I didn't think it would stick to the nail well enough. Thanks!

Oh, squiggles

@Is It a Hat? I have seen video tutorials, and it seems to work, but I haven't been brave enough to try it myself.

PotatoPotato

How do people get such pretty, square nails? Mine are never that shape, and a lot of manicure styles just Do.Not fit on them.

Lily Rowan

@PotatoPotato Fakes!

redheaded&crazy

@PotatoPotato or commitment to growing and filing your nails awkwardly for weeks?

faustbanana

@PotatoPotato I started using Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream a couple of months ago - this stuff is SERIOUS. My nails started growing longer and stronger very quickly. I didn't recognize my own hands!

Of course I stopped using it every day and my nails started splitting and breaking again and I gave up.

Seriously though, get some of this stuff. Once your nails are long enough you can cut/file them into any sorta shape you like.

PotatoPotato

@Lily Rowan: Fuck that shit.

PotatoPotato

@redheaded&crazie: Fuck THAT shit.

PotatoPotato

@faustbanana: That sounds like good shit.

Myrtle

@PotatoPotato That trio was some funny shit.

Hiroine Protagonist

What the heck is nude?

yeah-elle

@Hiroine Protagonist In nail polish, I'm pretty sure "nude" stands for any color on the brown-tan-beige-pink spectrum that works well with your personal skin tone. Typically a shade or two lighter than your natural nailbed. It's not quite the same clusterfuck as weird champagne-colored shoes being called "nude."

Hiroine Protagonist

@yeah-elle Oh, that's so good to know! I was about to get serious side-eye, it reminded me of those terrible terrible cobwebs of doom - the pantyhose the same colour as skin, which, maybe somebody's skin? but not "skin".

yeah-elle

@Hiroine Protagonist Oh, it still totally ventures into side-eye territory sometimes, particularly when nail polish companies debut "nude" collections that are unfortunately only for white people with pink undertones. It's not only ridiculously offensive, but also straight up stupid, because everyone can agree that when you paint your nails with a skin-tone neutral that doesn't complement your own, you end up with creepy hands that look plastic and/or dead.

Jane Marie

@Hiroine Protagonist you can also just leave the nail nude meaning no color on the bottom and do color only on the tips. just the tips. (never gets old.)

PistolPackinMama

Is this worth stopping biting my nails for?

Nicole Cliffe

I have never found anything to be quite worth that.

PistolPackinMama

@Nicole Cliffe Me neither. I will just admire everyone else's lovely hands. And get pedicures.

FloraPosteHaste

Those cuticles look like they hurt. I try to keep mine nudged back, but yowch!

Myrtle

@FloraPosteHaste I thought that, too. That's either a bruise or the start of an infection.

vunder

Increasingly, I find nail polish on fingers to be disgusting.
