Friday Bargain Bin: Intern Edition

Snake Eyes Sunglasses, $1.99 (were $14)
$1.99. $1.99? ONE DOLLAR AND NINETY NINE CENTS?!? I'll take fifty.

Sephora Trend Tips in Mod, $5.00 (were $14.00)
Mod nail stickers — very "Zou Bisou Bisou." Add this if you're starting from scratch.

New Astrid Tank, $29.00 (was $39.50)
I will wear this every day. All of the days.

Paintbrush Silk Pillow Cover, $29.99 (was $39.00)
Artsy.

Cotton Crepe Cardigan in Safari Cat, $59.99 (was $88.00)
Must... always... have... leopard print on my body. It has basically become a neutral in my wardrobe.

3.1 Philip Lim Cheeky Brief, $29.00 (was $85.00)
I repeat — MUST ALWAYS HAVE LEOPARD PRINT ON MY BODY.

Orange Pantone Reporter Style Notebook, $4.00 (was $8.00)
Love how this is called "reporter style". It makes me feel very "Girl Friday" about taking notes.

Gone With The Wind Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Edition, $9.47 (was $24.98)
Yikes, I have never seen this movie! Don't be mad, Anne Helen Peterson, Doctor of Celebrity Gossip! Now's my chance to right this wrong.

Markhbein Glass Tall Drinking Glass, $6.00 (was $16.00)
I will drink all the red wine out of this glass. All of it.

Zara Printed Trousers, $59.99 (was $79.90)
Floral printed trousers? Sure. Yeah. I mean, why not.

BARGAIN BINNNNNNNNNNNNN! Gonna buy some sunglasses. And wineglasses. All the glasses, basically.

New Commenter Name

@backstagebethy
Did you get the pink wineglasses? I tried, but they sold out. So I got 2 tall orange ones and 2 short turquoise.

cosmia

Ahh I am an intern doing intern-y things right now! I want that leopard-print cardigan but realized it is still slightly out of my intern allowance.

The Hyperbolic Julia Set

@cosmia You know I until now I have always avoided animal prints if possible (gifts from others can't be helped), but that IS a schnazzy sweater.....

professordarkheart

@cosmia Last weekend, saw that leopard-print cardigan for $50 at my local J.Crew. But there was an extra 30% off all sale items, which made it $35. Had a $25 rewards card in my wallet about to expire. So, eventually handed over $10 and it was mine.

Don't hate me because my cardigan is beautiful.

Pop Pop

I'm not sure how I feel about floral print trousers with a floral print top though? Overload on floral print?

The Lady of Shalott

@Pop Pop That is an job lot of floral print in one place, oh yes.

themmases

@The Lady of Shalott I clicked through mostly to get at the shoes. The shoooooooeeeeeeesssss.

Daisy Razor

@Pop Pop Whatever do you mean? Doesn't everyone want to walk around looking like their grandmother's sitting room couch?

Pop Pop

@The Lady of Shalott Almost grandma's wallpaper too much floral print? I say this pretending I had a grandma with floral print wall paper, but you get the point.

@themmases Yeah those shoes are pretty stellar, but I like the color the model is wearing better than the yellow on sale.

Pop Pop

@Daisy Razor Ahh yes this is also what I meant! Couch, wallpaper, the hairpin understands me.

The Lady of Shalott

@Pop Pop My grandmother had a floral couch AND floral wallpaper. With that outfit you could blend in, it'd be like that photo of a soldier in camo-print blending into the floral couch.

Pop Pop

@The Lady of Shalott Ooooh or a grandma version of the Gotye video!

wee_ramekin

@Pop Pop Hahahaha, yeah. My reaction to Jane's "Floral printed trousers? Sure. Yeah. I mean, why not." was: "Because I would rather walk naked through Times Square than wear those awful, awful trousers (especially with that top!)".

HereKitty

@wee_ramekin Not Jane -- intern Haley, rockin' the alt text. Go, Haley!

EpWs

@HereKitty Good job, Intern Haley! This is a lovely BB, and we have MISSED IT SO OMG NEVER LEAVE US AGAIN, BARGAIN BIN.

Judith Slutler

@Pop Pop Nope, wear it with like a shiny metallic blouse or maybe a black silk tanktop imho!

NeverOddOrEven

@Pop Pop
Looks like the same color, just different lighting/angle.

Jane Marie

@HereKitty (I actually did the alt text ;)

Czarna_Owca

@wee_ramekin I had a similar response to that rhetorical question. I work in clothing retail and a customer came in just yesterday wearing those exact pants. They look awful in person. I couldn't stop staring and almost walked into a table while taking another customer back to a fitting room.

HereKitty

@Jane Marie ... and Jane, rockin' the good example. Go, Jane!

werewolfbarmitzvah

I'm gonna end up with way more pairs of sunglasses than I'll ever be able to wear at this rate!

Also, I think I might have owned floral pants exactly like those when I was 8? I get a strong urge to own these, as well as a strong sensation that I will regret the purchase almost immediately.

TheDragon

@werewolfbarmitzvah My older sister loved floral print leggings, and is built a little differently than I am, so I grew up wearing only floral print, badly fitting stretch pants.
I think I just bought my first floral print item in years! it's a short, ruffly skirt that's black with bright, tiny flowers all over it.

sarah girl

@werewolfbarmitzvah I think I had them, too, only they were leggings. With stirrups.

olivebee

@werewolfbarmitzvah I'm probably in the minority here, but I LOVE those pants and want them desperately (although they are much to expensive for my budget). I have been hunting for non-baggy, nicely-fitted floral pants all spring to no avail. Everything is a goddamn harem pant or muumuu for your leg. Sigh.

null

@olivebee You're not alone! My daughter watched Pretty in Pink for the first time last night and we were both like, THOSE FLORAL PANTS! WANT.

Suzanne Hill@twitter

@olivebee I have these pants and I can say they are AMAZING. Get them. Worth the money, I wore them yesterday and probably wear them like every other week...

Nicole Cliffe

Oh, hiii, reporter notebook! If I wasn't a clumsy southpaw who drags ink across the side of her hand, I would like to meet you.

Pop Pop

@Nicole Cliffe I'm a lefty and don't have the dragging ink problem. Then again, when I write, I literally turn the paper/notebook to a 30 degree angle to my body, so who knows.

sarah girl

@Pop Pop Yeah lefties!! I turn my paper almost 90 degrees, hah.

Can we make this a lefty solidarity thread and complain about UGH SCISSORS and such?

anachronistique

@Sarah H. My dad and brother are both lefties, so for the longest time as a kid I thought boys were lefties and girls were righties.

Pop Pop

@Sarah H. YES! Ugh scissors indeed. Does your family make references to you being a lefty all the time? Anytime I do something random with my left hand everyone laughs and is all 'look at the lefty!' I don't get it.

Beatrix Kiddo

@Sarah H. YES. The lefty scissors they would give you in elementary school? I'm convinced those were just the broken scissors.

Verity

@Nicole Cliffe I have managed to mostly avoid the ink-smudging problem by lifting my hand so the side doesn't drag on the paper and by tilting the paper clockwise a bit. It still happens, though. Why must I like fountain pens?

mustelid

@Pop Pop I make references to my boyfriend's left-handedness sometimes. It is because I am jealous.

Myrtle

@Pop Pop Lefty reporting also, here. My survival technique is to keep my hand below the line I'm writing, so I'm always on clean paper, too. I resisted all that "twist your wrist around" stuff they tried to make us lefties do in elementary school.

lil.orphan.shannie

You almost had me with the sunglasses, until I got to the part that said, shipping: $9.95.

redheaded&crazy

@lil.orphan.shannie well if you buy 50 pairs it all evens out!

noodge

@lil.orphan.shannie yeeeahh. then I came back to the hairpin, and there was a little "free shipping code" for Fred Flare on a side ad! so I went back, and it didn't work because the glasses were on sale. ::sad trombone::

jacqueline
jacqueline

@lil.orphan.shannie Even worse: shipping to Canada is $24. So, that's great, I'll just buy some $26 sunglasses somewhere else.

UUGGHHHHHH

madge

the alt-text on the floral pants! lol!

meaux

@madge. Oh my god, that alt-text just made my day. Because I both love and fear Canadians.

tea tray in the sky.

@meaux I also love and fear myself.

redheaded&crazy

Things I want on this list: leopard print cardigan, leopard print brief, that pillow!!!! (doesn't match with my room though), and those wine glasses

So basically, all the things

p.s. hairpin fashion club here if anybody wants to join! current discussion topics include: nails, malevolent emails, black high-waisted skirts, and maxi dresses

madge

@redheaded&crazie hairpin fashion club where? i just made a maxi dress and posted a tutorial and would like to talk about the clothings with you!

redheaded&crazy

@madge I ADDED THE LINK. the link that I forgot. because I am an eeeediot

come talk about clothings with me/us!

madge

@redheaded&crazie yaaay!! good linking!!

cosmia

@redheaded&crazie Yaay I applied! I don't know why I kept forgetting to before.

Daisy Razor

@redheaded&crazie I think I have now joined every Hairpin Google Group.

Hellcat

@redheaded&crazie Oooh! Hooray!

queenofbithynia

NO, intern, STAY STRONG, do not watch GOTW, unless it is forced on you as an actual condition of employment. and if it is, maybe appeal to a labor relations board? That kind of mistreatment is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Or anyway follow it up with Angela Carter's The Belle as Businessperson ("Irresistible Rhett, his ears rampant as if ears were secondary sexual characteristics...")

The Lady of Shalott

@queenofbithynia Aww, GWTW is one of my favourite movies. :(

queenofbithynia

@The Lady of Shalott man but I think even people who love it would get a kick out of Angela Carter's commentary, it's pretty sharp. as for me it fills me with such rage I can't even spell GWTW properly. probably because I am used to thinking of it by such alternate titles as PETULANT SLAVEHOLDERS UNLUCKY IN LOVE.

but I judge the movie, not its fans, I swear! and I know the rest of the Hairpin (and humanity at large?) loves it, so I respect its mighty sphere of influence.

melis

Every viewing of GWTW should be double-billed with a mandatory showing of Roots. Not the TV series, either, the 24-CD audiobook version read by Avery Brooks.

melis

guys I just really want to talk about Roots, I just started "reading" (listening to Avery Brooks read it to me) it and it's making my commute to work like 50 billion times more intense.

PistolPackinMama

@queenofbithynia I am with you. On the hate and the alternate title and the everyone else loves it, not judging part.

But. Ugh. Dreadful.

I am currently "reading" Paul Fussel's The Boys' Crusade when I drive around and have been telling myself I need something less grim. Swapping grim for intense... I've only read parts of Roots. I should see if the library has it.

Also, what other audio books should I get to listen to while driving around, 'Pinitariat?

melis

@PistolPackinMama ALL ROOTS ALL THE TIME

THIS COMMENTING ACCOUNT IS NOW A ROOTS-ONLY ZONE

FIRST COMMENT

DO YOU THINK OMARO WAS REALLY GOING TO LET KUNTA TAKE LAMI TO MALI WITH HIM

THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING RIGHT

DON'T YOU WISH ALEX HALEY WAS ALIVE TO WRITE THAT A/U FANFIC

melis

seriously just think about all of the bowls he was going to buy in Mali, Binta would have lost her damn mind, remember how excited she was to get those gold-filled quills when he came back from his gold-panning trip??

melis

Be honest, who else totally thought those youths he met on the road asking him to go gold-panning were totally going to turn out to be slatees and betray Kunta and then felt super relieved when he made it back to Jufere all right

PistolPackinMama

@melis I really hope other people have read Roots, because I can't help with any of these questions until I get my hands on a copy of Roots and it seems kind of urgent to know...

Judith Slutler

@queenofbithynia "petulant slaveholders unlucky in love" hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha!!!

Judith Slutler

@PistolPackinMama The answer to "What audio..." is always David Blight's Civil War and Reconstruction history course. Especially in a thread that is about GWTW! check it: http://oyc.yale.edu/history/hist-119

MsChilePepper

@melis It's been a long time since I read Roots, so I'm a little nebulous on specific details of the earlier bits, but I really loved the book so, so much.

One bit that struck me was that Kunta and his tribe were literate, albeit in Arabic.

PatatasBravas

@melis ROOTS

Texts from Roots characters plz?

shumacumlaude

Can we just talk for a moment about how quickly I just snatched up that copy of GWTW? Roomie bonding time!

sarah girl

Oh my goodness, might need to buy that Gone with the Wind set... I haven't seen that movie in sooooo long.

I didn't realize until college that it was actually kind of strange that I watched that movie on a weekly basis when I was like, six years old (although I tended to wander out during the war hospital scenes, eeeesh). Yeah, growing up in the South!

Hellcat

@Sarah H. I just dragged it out last week (my sister gave me some big old commemorative set in a red velvety box for Christmas). Then I realized that I probably did this out of the blue because I am in the early, maddening, fear-inducing stages of purchasing a condo, and subconsciously, I needed the "I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again" pep talk.

TheDragon

I can't wear cardigans. I have ALLL the legs and NO waist. I measured. Distance from the top of my pelvic bones to my lowest rib? 1"
HOW DO I HAVE INTESTINES???

sarah girl

@The Kendragon I am built very similarly - flowy cardigans are the key! Not the huge ones that go almost down to your knee, just the kinda of gauzy fluttery ones that hit at your hip. Since there's a lot of movement while you're walking, it kind of blurs the boundaries between top/bottom half and looks quite nice. This also works really well if you have zero hips (me)!

TheDragon

@Sarah H. I have the opposite problem. I have hips. and a butt. so my little 1" waist is THERE, it's just short short short. I do have a flowy cardigan that I love though! Maybe I'll look at some more in different colors/knits.

Megasus

@The Kendragon Belt it?

EpWs

@The Kendragon OH HAI, ME. I have had luck with a cropped cardigan I got from Banana Republic FOREVER ago. Beyond that, I have a few that I just throw on and to hell with how they make me look like I am wearing a bathrobe, it is COLD in my office.

And yeah, where the hell are our internal organs, for serioussss? Are my kidneys in my thighs?

That would actually explain a lot.

TheDragon

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher
I actually go with a light weight, open knit, pullover sweater during the summer, cause the Southern NM heat is intense, but the lab I work in thinks we are in the artic.

Hellcat

@The Kendragon Me too! My GWTW-giving sister is five inches taller than I am and yet, her legs are maybe two inches longer than mine! How is this a thing? A head growing right out of a waist--that's me.

pilcrow

@The Kendragon Yes! Big butt, small waist, no intestines! What I hate are cute dresses that only look great if I shrug my shoulders up to my ears. Sometimes I think I should invent vertical shoulder padding.

parallel-lines

If you're feeling fancy Neiman Marcus is offering another 25% off sales items, and J Crew offering 30% off sales items. GET IT!

wallsdonotfall

@parallel-lines Aaaah, did the JCrew code expire yesterday? I don't see that on the site anymore. But Madewell is doing 25% off on sale items instead.

themmases

@wallsdonotfall The J. Crew code expired yesterday, on the day I got paid. I fully understood this from the first email yet, pathetically, kept the email anyway.

parallel-lines

@wallsdonotfall Oh man, I guess so, sorry!

themmases

@parallel-lines I think the email this morning about about some of the Factory stuff being 30% off today instead. There's no code though, you can just go. Also worth it!

Megasus

I totally have a Pantone notebook, and did in fact use it during my internship.
Also I want those mod nail stickers SO BAD.

sarah girl

New York and Company has some simply ridiculous sales right now, both online and in the stores! Almost everything in the store (except for really new arrivals) is at LEAST 30% off, and some is up to 70% off. Craziness!

The Hyperbolic Julia Set

@Sarah H. Such good information! About to get first pay check and first real job that needs real job clothes so this sales info is badly needed!

wrappedupinbooks

@The Hyperbolic Julia Set strong ditto! My first real job starts next month, and I already used my one big girl outfit on the interview. Apparently you are expected to show up in different combinations of dress pants, pencil skirts and blazers each day. WHO KNEW?!

The Hyperbolic Julia Set

@katevetrano Iknorite?!! I lucked out some because I managed to figure this out pretty early (one of my summer jobs was substitute teaching) so I started asking for business appropriate clothes for birthdays and christmas but the problem was that means my closet is full of clothes my mom and grandmothers picked out......so I've been at work for a month and survived but I am DYING to do some replacement.

The Hyperbolic Julia Set

@katevetrano Also: Congratulations!!

wrappedupinbooks

@The Hyperbolic Julia Set thanks, you too!! Career-lady high five! I feel you on your mom/grandmothers' taste... my mom doesn't even try anymore haha. I had some luck at Express last week. Despite what all of their sequin plastered going out tops would have you believe, their business-wear is quite nice and doesn't make me feel like I'm playing dress-up in my mom's work clothes. And you can always get some sort of crazy discount there by printing whatever coupon is current from the web page!

melis

Scarlett, what's that body doing in the cellar?
hmm?
the dead body
in the cellar
you know the one I mean
oh him
he was a Yankee
I had to shoot him
he would have killed us all!!!!
Scarlett he was a pharmacist
I've done business with him for years
if he wasn't a Yankee
then what was he doing in the Yankee burying cellar then
hmm?
answer me that
why else would he be in the Yankee burying cellar
that's where we bury Yankees
honestly Rhett

wee_ramekin

Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of the New Astrid Tank? I really like it, but there are no reviews on that website.

I'd like to know if anyone has it, and if so, would I have to layer it? The description says I wouldn't have to, but I am not in the way of trusting what indie-style clothing sites describe as "wear alone". $29 for a tank top is also a bit out of my price-range if it's going to be another item that must always be layered, so again I ask...does anyone know anything about this tank top?

Judith Slutler

@wee_ramekin idk but I have an H&M one from last year that is basically the exact same tank. It does have that slightly-too-drapy-armhole thing going on, but I usually just put on a cute bikini top under it and feel beachy as fuck. My favorite weekend summer wear, I don't know why I didn't buy it in like 4 colors, because it's not back this summer :(

martinipie

@Emmanuelle Cunt "beachy as fuck" just made my day!

Anna Jayne@twitter

Leopard print is totally a neutral. You can put it with all the colors. ALL THE COLORS

TheDragon

@Anna Jayne@twitter But especially turquoise.

Anna Jayne@twitter

@The Kendragon YES. The band I sing in determines a Color Scheme for each gig, and leopard and turquoise has been it on a number of occasions.

frigwiggin

"Gary, why are you watching Gone With the Wind alone in the dark?? I mean, without ME??"

frigwiggin

"Gary, we were supposed to watch Gone With the Wind alone in the dark together."

PistolPackinMama

@frigwiggin Elaine, I would have invited you, but your legs are positively glowing in those floral trousers. I was afraid the glare would ruin the view.

frigwiggin

@PistolPackinMama "Tsk, Gary. Can't you just put on one of the fifty pairs of snakeskin sunglasses that you leave at all strategic points around the house for just such occasions? I mean, really, Gary, it's like we haven't even been over the contingency plans. Now scoot over and hand me that silk pillow so I can pretend it's Rhett."

Judith Slutler

@frigwiggin "Fine, but only if you're sure not to spill wine on it out of that enormous red glass again."

Marquise de Morville

@Emmanuelle Cunt "Gary, even if I spill a little wine it won't show on the leopard print of my cardigan. And you did not bother to put on anything besides your leopard briefs again"

sarah girl

ALSO, any DC-area Pinners: There's a Groupon today for the AMAZING Spa World in Centerville here.

It's an Asian-style spa, which means you are fully naked in the big pools, but it's seriously an issue for like two seconds and then you get used to it. All sorts of ladies of all different sizes there (and men, but the pools are gender-separated), it's so cool. Also, there are a bunch of sauna rooms, places to relax/sleep (it's open 24/7 and a pass is good for 24 hours), free wifi, delicious Asian food and bubble tea... I love it SO MUCH!

(Also, if you're skeptical, it has a ton of Yelp reviews with really in-depth descriptions of what it's like, the comfort level, etc. I was super-nervous about the naked part, and the Yelp reviews helped calm me down immensely.)

sarah girl

@Sarah H. Just realized my link got stripped out somehow, here's the Groupon link: http://www.groupon.com/deals/spa-world-3

shumacumlaude

@Sarah H. Thank you for this. I'm trying to convince a couple ladies to join me in this adventure now.

Apocalypstick

Never mind the tank, what about that hat?

Judith Slutler

@Apocalypstick I was really hoping there would be a link to that hat!

Apocalypstick

@Emmanuelle Cunt I can't find it on that site, either :( but it's preeetttyyy.

wallsdonotfall

This is maybe a little outside of an intern's wage, but we should definitely all buy these perfect-for-the-office shoes.

PistolPackinMama

@wallsdonotfall ... ... ... Those... are Rose Bowl parade floats. Only also they are shoes. What? Who? I...

Or maybe a Eurovision Song Contest set...

themmases

@wallsdonotfall "Let's all make..."

SuperGogo

@wallsdonotfall Only $1,455 plus shipping from Belgium!

thebestjasmine

@wallsdonotfall Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

nevernude cutoffs

alt text on the notebook? athletic gold.

laurel

@nevernude cutoffs 'Mexican Mango'.

NeverOddOrEven

@laurel
Clearly it's Marigold.

nevernude cutoffs

@laurel Or Mango Yellow. There are WAY too many sources on what this color is named.

frigwiggin

Oh man, so I have to thank whoever it was who linked me up to Fab a couple of months ago, because they're one of my favorite daily deal sites and I snapped up these gorgeous bird notecards but quick. I'm going to send one off to my Pinpal as soon as I get them. (Pinpal, where are you???)

A Dolly

@frigwiggin ALERT! If my pinpal is reading -- I have written 3 times and not mailed anything. Thank you for your letter/card. I will try to write you again??!! and actually mail something.

pain

I got the sunglasses! My first Bargain Bin purchase! There were 3 pairs left, so I bought 2 and left one for another lucky pinner. Cheap sunglasses.... yessss. This is why I got lasik surgery.

Judith Slutler

I love you, Bargain Bin Intern. Awesomeness.

EpWs

@Emmanuelle Cunt Bargain Bintern?

Gwdihw

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher

PINTERN!

Been There Done That

How did you know I need another pretty notebook to write in a page or two and then misplace somewhere in my apartment?!

hulia

@Been There Done That Conversation with my boyfriend last week, re this journal/list I need to start doing:
hulia: But I can't make the list, I don't have a cute enough notebook!
boyf: [blank stare]
hulia: What?! I don't!
boyf: [Audible sigh.] Hulia, there are notebooks strewn on every surface of this house.
hulia: But they all already have writing in them -- I can't use those!
boyf: I do not understand what happens your head.

le mango

Something about the cut of those little leopard print briefs-- or maybe the product photoshopping? I don't know-- is giving that model a phantom wang, no?

thebestjasmine

...Those leopard print underpants were originally $85? EIGHTY FIVE DOLLARS?

Hellcat

Oh, leopard, leopard, leopard! I too frequently have at least one leopard thing on my body! The other night, the BF gave me a roll of leopard-print duct tape that he saw in whatever store he was wandering around! I want to do things with it... but what? Where's that Handy Femme? (Handy Femme, do you think I could cover a dingy old square Ikea end table with this tape and be done with it?)

superdreaming

@Hellcat I am not The [Hairpin] Handy Femme but I am a Handy Femme and YES PLEASE LEOPARDPRINT DUCTTAPE TABLE. And pictures of the result.

Be But Little

Hairpin! It's like you knew I was an intern or something. Only I have no money. Like, literally. No money. I work for FREE! Urgh.
