i'd ride troy dyer's melt anytime. you and me and five bucks, baby.

samafaye

buffy, romeo + juliet soundtrack, and young leonardo dicaprio are all timeless.

lisma

@samafaye Romeo and Juilet soundtrack really stands up to the test of time. And I was freaking out yesterday realizing that my childhood crush is now almost forty. Leo!

nocomment

@samafaye I definitely still watch Buffy and listen to that soundtrack. But I prefer 30ish Leo.

olivebee

@fatgirlinohio Yep, I just finished watching the entire Buffy series about 2 months ago. Buffy 4eva.

OxfordComma

@ginalouise @samafaye: Damn straight.

Seriously, that Radiohead song on R+J?
Holy amazing, Batman.

Daisy Razor

@OxfordComma That song and #1 Crush are so amazing.

joie

@OxfordComma Leo was so dreamy in that. I think that must have been the apex of his hotness.

samafaye

@all i'm pretty sure buffy is like 90% responsible for my current adult personality.

also, true story: in high school we did an updated rendition of "midsummer night's dream" and used that soundtrack. i was one of a harem of sexy/cool fairies and MAN did i feel cool.

lisma

@OxfordComma I have to confess that I'm not much of a Radiohead fan, but that song kills me.

OxfordComma

@heyits : It was!

@ginalouise: That song, and four or five songs of "In_Rainbows" are pretty much what I love of Radiohead.

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@ginalouise I loved that soundtrack--I was thinking of digging it out recently and listening to it again, and now I have been inspired! And as far as Radiohead goes, I'm also going to out myself as a non-Radiohead-fan and say that their song on the R+J soundtrack is the only song of theirs I've ever willingly listened to more than once.

She Saved The World, Alot

@samafaye Me too! I practically AM Buffy. Except I don't kick ass for comfort food, damn it.

(Actually I am signign up for a martial arts class on Sundays! SO MAYBE I DO!)

NellieBly

@samafaye I am re-watching Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1 back-to-back so that I can squee over the crossovers. "Squee! That was Angel on the other end of that phone call!" I might love those shows too much.

lisma

How can they not be into Clarissa Explains it All?
P.S. I still have my Docs from high school.

@ginalouise Na Na Na-Na-Na. Na Na-Na Na-Na....

becky@twitter

@S. Elizabeth way cool.

olivebee

@becky@twitter alright, alright

OwlOfDerision

@ginalouise This show made me want a collection of wall-mounted hubcaps. At least, that was the explanation I offered my dad when he caught me fooling around by his car with a screwdriver in 1997...

lisma

@OwlOfDerision hoenstly I think I'm still inspired by her, clothes-wise. My outfit today would certainly suggest that.

olivebee

I think I remember having a crush on Sam when I watched that show. I don't even remember now if he was cute or not. I just liked the idea of a guy best friend who spent 87457% of their time with you.

PistolPackinMama

@ginalouise PURPLE VELVET DOCS, YO.

becky@twitter

@olivebee and he climbed through your window on a ladder! yay for floppy haired boy best friends.

skipperdee

@ginalouise you guys there is a "CLARISSA AND THE STRAIGHTJACKETS" album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJGBp0ra5qw

LilyMarlene

@ginalouise SAME! But I can't wear them because they haven't (re-)caught on with anyone but neo-Nazis where I live. Damnit.

Megasus

Minesweeper!!!
Also Clarissa and Buffy = timeless.

OhMarie

@Megan Patterson@facebook My minesweeper skills are so strong it's frankly embarassing.

Stingray Bikini

These youths have NO IDEA how much they're missing out on by ignoring No Diggity. No doubt.

becky@twitter

@Stingray Bikini mmm hmm.

applestoapples

@Stingray Bikini I like the way you work it.

Decca

@Stingray Bikini Play on, playette

AndSomethingElse

@Stingray Bikini That was my first thought too. What is wrong with the youth of today? No taste.

dk
dk

@Stingray Bikini That was the first song I tried to sexy-dance to. I won't say lap dance, because...I don't have any idea what I was doing. But my boyfriend seemed into it. Until he dumped me a few weeks later for his ex-girlfriend who would stand outside his bedroom window screaming her poetry at him. How was I supposed to compete with that?

mustelid

@Stingray Bikini They must not like eargasms and/or mellow accents.

Ophelia

@dk The bigger question is, "why would you want to compete with that??" but that discounts being 15.

becky@twitter

@dk maybe he thought about the girl all the time. ow.

Decca

@dk When I read "How was I supposed to compete with that?" my brain immediately completed it as:

"Cause when it comes to playing basketball
I'm always last to be picked
And in some cases never picked at all
So I just lean up on the wall
Or sit up in the bleachers with the rest of the girls
Who came to watch their men ball"

dk
dk

@Ophelia He also had the Chinese symbol for "nothing" tattooed on the inside of his wrist. HE WAS REALLY DEEP, OKAY.

null

@Decca There is now a weird mix of this song and No Diggity running through my head. Solid head music for a Friday!

MrsLlama

@Stingray Bikini Basically came in here to say THIS...

Stingray Bikini

@applestoapples New life goal is to sex up some dude to this song on repeat. Move over Teddy Pendergrass!

yeah-elle

@Stingray Bikini Just the other day, I wrote "no diggity" in a text and was embarrassed by how filled with happiness I was. But I was not embarrassed to use those words. Not at all.

meetapossum

@Decca Hey, I wish I had my way
'Cause everyday would be a Friday
You could even speed on the highway
I would play ghetto games
Name my kids ghetto names
Little Mookie, Big Al, Lorraine

Hellcat

@ayeah-elle On the card for the very first flowers my BF sent me (actually, the very first flowers he ever sent... or so he says), he wrote "I like the way you work it." He was very proud of himself, even though he forgot to sign his name.

Decca

@meetapossum I was at a club last week where the DJ was playing a lot of 90s hip-hop. I was just about to go up and request that song but before I could push my way through the crowd to the DJ booth, she started playing it. Girl read my mind.

meetapossum

@Decca It is MY FAVORITE. My friend is in a karaoke league and the category for the week was rap and I just yelled "I WISH". But I'm pretty sure he did some other song because he's lame.

AndSomethingElse

@Hellcat That boy is a keeper.

Stingray Bikini

@yeah-elle No, no, no! You should feel triumphant!

Decca

@meetapossum Oh, totally my favourite too! Those kind of 90s rap tunes always slay at karaoke if you perform them with enough verve. Last time I was at karaoke, I opened with "Gangsta's Paradise".

scully

@Stingray Bikini And Don't Leave Me Girl!!

Hellcat

@Alexander So's the note; to this day it's on my refrigerator!

Stingray Bikini

@scully Let's just turn this whole comments section into Slow Jams I Have Loved.

applestoapples

@scully My love runs deeper than the ocean and sea / but if you sail away, you'll take the center piece of meeeeeee

scully

@Stingray Bikini @applestoapples: Also remember how the melody in DLMG was mysteriously the same as in Tupac's I Ain't Mad At Cha??
MYSTERIOUS!
Dun nuh nuh nuh nuh NUH...

Dr. Iris Puffybush

@Stingray Bikini I have been so into 90's R&B and rap lately. I bought a used SWV cd today for $1. Weak! Downtown! Right Here!

Dancercise

My parents were the only parents among my group of friends that had a baby grand piano (inherited from my great-great-grandma and keep tuned to perfection by my dad). Everyone else had cheesy Casios and untuned uprights. Whenever my brother or I had people over, SOMEBODY had to play the theme from Phantom on it.

My dad still hates that song.

GoToaster

@Dancersize Is he a Pink Floyd fan? That might help him warm up to it.

applestoapples

Varsity Blues
This is because THEY. DON'T. WANT. YOUR. LIFE.

Sorry. I'll be in my corner.

becky@twitter

@applestoapples whipped cream bakeenee?

nonvolleyball

@applestoapples please tell me you've seen Not Another Teen Movie.

applestoapples

@nonvolleyball Of course.
"Jake, I need T to the fourth power Y."
"Uh, what?"
"Time to Talk To You."

nonvolleyball

@applestoapples I assumed, but had to confirm. & now I wish there was a way to texturally replicate Jamie Lynn Presley's slow-motion walk through the hall.

D. Lurker

@applestoapples YOU CAN DO IT MOX!

reebs14

@applestoapples "Hang on to yer nipples, girls!" I can't listen to "Thunderstruck" without picturing the team getting their asses handed to them in slow motion (after an all-nighter at the strip joint, naturally).

amandadayle

There is a full page picture of me in my sophomore year yearbook calling my parents from the school payphone to have them come pick me up. I will treasure this photo someday when I have children demanding an iPhone 25.

becky@twitter

@amandadayle i can distinctly remember a friend using our high school payphone to prank page someone. 911!

DianaPrince

@amandadayle - Hey do you have a quarter I can borrow for the payphone? No? Do you have a cell phone I can borrow?

Bitterblue

@amandadayle Yup. I don't know how many times I had to call my mom after school to remind her that 1)she had children 2)she needed to come get them. So many quarters.
My school didn't have buses. My mom is a painter. She loses track of time a lot. I'm pretty sure not wanting to come get us is the only reason my parents sprung for my driving lessons.

LagunaBitch

@amandadayle OMG or calling collect?!

Valley Girl

@LagunaBitch Remember that brief window where every other commercial was for 1-800-COLLECT or a ripoff???

It Girl. Rag Doll.

@Valley Girl like 1-800-CALL-ATT! of course I only actually used it to blurt out "PICK ME UP!" instead of saying my name. so many quarters saved ^_^

lunacydress

@It Girl. Rag Doll. OMG, I did that too! Every day after school!

Decca

My secondary school had a tradition of hanging the senior year's final art projects on the walls for the duration of that school year. When I started at the school, that year's theme had been "Heroes" and about 80% of the girls in this small, suburban Catholic girls school in Dublin had interpreted this as meaning "paintings of a shirtless Tupac". It was both terrifying and exciting, to walk into the school aged 12 and find it covered in "THUG LIFE" slogans.

AndSomethingElse

@Decca I misread this and thought that the theme was "Herpes."

Decca

@Alexander That easily could've been the unofficial theme of the year

RK Fire

@Decca: This anecdote needs more upvotes!

JessicaLovejoy

Well, I mean, Rider Strong is fucking' timeless. As if someone with that name could be anything but.

Edit: Annnnd I just realized we all used the word "timeless."

redheaded&crazy

@JessicaLovejoy I never realized how much I love the name Rider Strong until just now.

JessicaLovejoy

@redheaded&crazy Gurl, I'm glad to help.

dk
dk

@redheaded&crazy His middle name is King, fyi. And you thought that name couldn't get any better.

olivebee

My husband is Boy Meets World's #1 Fan. He can name any plot from any episode and all the characters and actors involved in the show. I went to Northwestern, and my senior year there was a rumor that William Daniels (aka Mr. Feeny) was going to be our keynote speaker at graduation because he went there, too. When I told my husband (fiance at the time), I thought he was going to faint.

We also quote Boy Meets World all the time in our household...particularly "Underpantssss!" and "I am warm and you are cold" and "My hosiery is bunching!"

OneTooManySpoons

@JessicaLovejoy OH, when my friend and I were like 7, we just looooved him and thought that the fact that his name was "Rider Strong" just made him that much sexier. I think it was because we were also at the age when all girls loved horses, so Rider! Strong!

Also, he guest-starred on Veronica Mars once (if you haven't seen it, hush, it's the best show) and I freaked out, but I was also like, "what, can anyone take this seriously since it's RIDER STRONG??" And. And! Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Same thing.

redheaded&crazy

@dk That is bananas! Who names their kid that unless it's intentional?

If i had that name the temptation to just always add an extra F to my signature would be extreme. but would that just be TOO over the top? who cares i would do it anyway.

olivebee

@OneTooManySpoons I freaked out at that VM episode, too! Also, that episode made me realize he hasn't aged at all since Boy Meets World. Plus, he played a douche in that episode so that was a bummer.

redheaded&crazy

@olivebee I too was bummed out by his douchiness. He was definitely my fave BMW character. Although yeah, he somehow still managed to look like a 14 year old in VMars.

cuminafterall

@olivebee Underpantsss! I've said that for YEARS and had totally forgotten it came from Boy Meets World.

dk
dk

@redheaded&crazy My last name is King, and my middle initial is F, so my "professional" email address is FirstnameFKing. It took me longer than I like to admit to realize how that read.

Hellcat

@olivebee He was non-douchey (from what I remember) in the movie Cabin Fever, a gross favorite of mine. And he was still cute!

C.SanDiego

@Hellcat PANCAKES!

Hellcat

@C.SanDiego "No pancakes."

Seriously, yes! I still laugh like a loon at that part! Because... what? WHAT?

C.SanDiego

@Hellcat I definitely just went and watched it on YouTube and laughed hysterically. It will never make sense, and it will always be hilarious.

Hellcat

@C.SanDiego "Please don't sit next to Dennis."

bskinz

@JessicaLovejoy. My college had a humor newspaper, and they usually did a TigerBeat spoof every year. To this day, because of that paper, I can't help but think of Rider Strong as his "real name" "Giggles McTicklescrotum". Any UVA Dec fans out there?

Ophelia

The first song I learned to play on the piano (and the only one I still remember) is Everything I Do, I Do It For You.

dk
dk

@Ophelia Mine was Right Here Waiting. And yep, I still got it.

Ophelia

@dk I will now spend the next several hours belting that out in my head. Or aloud, depending on whether I'm on a phone call or not.

LornaLoo

@Ophelia My best friend learned it on piano to play at her (much older) brother's wedding. She cried the whole time.

phenylalanine

@Ophelia Mine was A Thousand Miles... and yep, it is also the only thing I still know how to play.

Opos

After they jacked up payphone prices to a quarter and a dime, I'd call collect to say "pick me up!" as the name. I don't think that really worked, but no one ever seemed to have a dime and the phone definitely did not take pennies.

JessicaLovejoy

@Opos Oh God, I remember that "Mr. Wehadababyitsaboy" phone commercial and finding it terribly clever.

Ophelia

@Opos Me too!

becky@twitter

1-800-COLLECT

NeenerNeener

@Opos No, I think it worked. I used to call long distance(!) collect and say "call me back" as a name, and I always got a call back.

Opos

@NeenerNeener She would always pick me up, but I think sometimes she'd get charged for the call still, which was the issue.

NeenerNeener

@Opos: I'm glad I didn't just confirm that she was lying to you about not picking you up back then - "What call?"

dk
dk

I was with you on the "things from my high school years" until you got to Britney Spears, which was a thing from my senior year of college? THE COLLEGE WHERE CLUELESS WAS FILMED, BTW. Also, the college where Rider Strong attended for a whole half-semester or something. I hung out with him once and he went on and on about going to Adam Duritz's birthday party. So really, this list is completely about me.

SarahP

@dk You ARE the 90s.

dk
dk

@SarahP I actually missed half the 90s since my parents moved us to Bangkok for middle/high school. I therefore have spent every second since then desperately trying to catch up. We did have docs and Pearl Jam over there, though. Albeit a few years late.

NeenerNeener

@dk It kind of seemed to me that this high school list was over a span of ~6-8 years.

phlox

@dk Yes! I lived in Hong Kong until 1996 so I feel like I missed so much of North American 90s pop culture. But we still had school dances, with R. Kelly and Boys II Men songs mixed in with the 50s/60s hits and cantopop.

dk
dk

@phlox Did you go to HKIS? I went to ISB! I was there 1989-1995. Both of my brothers played basketball, so we went to HKIS every Christmas for the tournament.

phlox

@dk Haha, yes! And we went to Thailand for Christmas, twice, I think? Once for sure, the other time might have been Malaysia.

paper bag princess

@dk My sister went there too! She had a class with him. And for my birthday that year, she actually got him to autograph a page out of Teen Beat or something. So yes, I HAVE A SIGNED PINUP OF RIDER STRONG. It was the highlight of middle school.

Sea Ermine

@dk I went to ISB too! I did all of high school there, I actually didn't move to the US until I was 18 and only one of my parents is from the US so I'm still working on catching up on all kind of pop culture. I have assigned my boyfriend the task on filling me in on all the stuff I missed.

Smallison

Ok, maybe this is slightly thread-jacky, but I freaking love watching movies from my high school years. For many reasons, but mostly because everyone still used their own eyelashes and no hair extensions! I was watching The American President last night, and there are multiple scenes where Annette Benning wears no makeup at all. It is fabulous.

Hellcat

@Smallison It's also fun to notice some of today's famous people roaming around in those movies (and TV shows).

nocomment

@Hellcat Can't Hardly Wait is great if you want to spot a ridiculous amount of people who have been on Buffy or who are otherwise famous now.

Hellcat

@fatgirlinohio I always spot Parker (bad, yucky Parker!), Buffy's one-night-stand, on and in many other things! OOOH, that Parker...

AndSomethingElse

Dear Mama is like the worst song off that album.

OneTooManySpoons

This is so relevant to my life right now, because I'm going to a 90s party tomorrow, so I've been remembering alllll things 90s to try to come up with something to wear (Doc Martens, overalls, flannel, Blossom-esque hats, and anything that looks like Saved by the Bell or Clueless). Unfortunately, I have none of these things, except for a flannel shirt of my boyfriend's, and no money to buy anything more than about $1. Any suggestions of how to turn a current wardrobe into a 90s outfit?

samafaye

@OneTooManySpoons OH MY GOD this reminds me of my idea for a "come as you were in the 90's" party!!! i mean, you have ten years of amazing fashion to choose from. i myself would go with a long sleeved orange velvet shirt, with a grey floor length cargo skirt, with some gigantic platform combat boots from "5-7-9", topped off with short hair twisted back with those baby barretts.

samafaye

@samafaye and, ahh, that wasn't helpful at all. i don't think they sell orange velvet shirts anymore.

SarahP

@OneTooManySpoons Rip up a t-shirt and wear it over a bright and visible bra, wear a ripped-up skirt or ripped-up jeans. Bright tights optional. Sturdy boots or sneakers. Bold lipstick, messy hair, messy eyeliner. 90s girl grunge! (Think Hole.)

OneTooManySpoons

@samafaye Not a practical solution, but still an amazing image. Man, I remember in seventh grade I got myself a long-sleeved striped velour shirt, and I just remember thinking that FINALLY I was hot shit.

olivebee

@OneTooManySpoons This might be a little creepy, but are you in Chicago? Because my friend is having a 90s party tomorrow (that I cannot go to, sadly), and he just told me that he thinks he has friends that read the hairpin.

Brunhilde

@OneTooManySpoons I would go in my standard high school outfit of Dickie's, Independant Trucking T-Shirt, Airwalks, and a frog pendant on a leather choker.

nevernude cutoffs

@OneTooManySpoons I'm going to say to stick with the grunge route too.... jean shorts, tights, plain tee, wrap the flannel around your waist... and backwards baseball cap! Be Alex Mack.

Ophelia

@OneTooManySpoons I had that shirt, too. I wore it with forest green jeans and thought I was awesome.

olivebee

@nevernude cutoffs This is exactly what I was going to wear to the 90s party I was supposed to go to this weekend. Except change the baseball cap (since I don't own one) to clunky boots. It's also how i dressed in the 90s because I was a major tomboy. Baggy everything.

ironhoneybee

@OneTooManySpoons Do you have any bodysuits? As someone who peaked in the 90s, I promise you, we all wore bodysuits all the time. And, mysteriously, floral printed tights. Also, I might be mistaken about this, but can't you purchase an entire replica of my 90s wardrobe right now by simply walking into an Urban Outfitters?

OneTooManySpoons

@olivebee Sadly, no. It's funny, though, because as I posted this I thought, "maybe someone reading will be going to the same party and we'll figure it out and it will be a surprise Hairpin meetup and WHAT A PARTY!" But that will not happen with us (this time).

nevernude cutoffs

@olivebee Oh, me too. Except less of being a tomboy, more about being extremely uncomfortable with my body. So yes, overalls for days. With a flannel. And workboots. 1994/5 y'all! I never got to rock a sweet baby tee with a smiley face (unless it was hidden under the bib of those overalls).

And surely someone you know has a baseball cap to borrow. So worth it, if only to start conversations about how awesome Alex Mack is.

olivebee

@nevernude cutoffs Alex Mack is the best! My friend got my husband and me the DVD of it a couple years ago, and all over the DVD cover is Jessica Alba. Her name and photo are the biggest ones on the cover. And she was only in the first episode or two as the popular bully girl who hates Alex.

@OneTooManySpoons Bummer! I was super excited to potentially have Real Life coincide with Pin Life. Have fun at your party, though, wherever you are!

nevernude cutoffs

@olivebee OMG! I didn't know she was on that. Just did a google search.. if Larisa Oleynik's face doesn't describe my mid-nineties mindset perfectly, nothing does.

http://themanliestdolphin.tumblr.com/post/7439057515/jessica-alba-on-alex-mac

mynamebackwards

@samafaye the outfit you are describing was practically my uniform. I was the queen of long, low-rise skirts with weird, shiny/textural fabric shirts that were probably SO flammable.

Hellcat

@SarahP I just wanted to bust in and say that my BF told me this morning that my dress looked very Hole-era Courtney and that I should smear my lipstick (I did not because I wasn't wearing any). This actually pleased me, as does this thread! I am "Like"ing the hell out of EVERY COMMENT!

Hellcat

@nevernude cutoffs When I was in college, a large clump of my friends were already sort of grungy before it became a Capital-G Thing. But I remember so clearly when the fraternities and sorority types caught wind of this style and, holy crap! The boys would wear their brandy-new flannels in the normal way with another one tied around their waists, while the girls apparently ran out and bought every color of Docs they could scoop up! It was insane, and they'd all hang out in the arcade of our student center and play Under the Bridge on the jukebox all the livelong day. I also remember a big promo sign in the mall at, like, J.C. Penney or something that said, "Grunge: The Style to Wear When You Want to Look Like You Don't Care."

no way

@OneTooManySpoons I defaulted into a nineties outfit the last costume party I attended, but I sort of had a few things on hand.

If you only have baggy jeans, a white v-neck, and a flannel you can really put the outfit over the top with hair and make-up - major powder, lots and lots of mascara, and a thick dark line of lip liner, plus a crunchy front "dut" (what do other people call that, when you clip your side hair up, then tug the front so it makes a little popador?). seriously, it was freaky how nineties it looked.

no way

*pompadour

ironhoneybee

@OneTooManySpoons You also could just pluck the shit out of your eyebrows, see if you can get ahold of some of that purpley-reddish hair dye that made everyone look like a human eggplant, and get yourself a nice wallet chain and/or choker. Why not both?

Hellcat

@no way I liked "popador."

angelinha

@OneTooManySpoons BUTTERFLY CLIPS

T A@twitter

@OneTooManySpoons Go to claire's. I swear they stock the exact same things. You can pick up flower pins and those little butterfly clips.
Then maybe just borrow an overly-large pair of jeans.

Correction, calling COLLECT from a payphone to have your parents pick you up. Memories!

Decca

Dun dun - well I went to school, in Olympiaaaaaa

Daisy Razor

@Decca Was everyone the same?

OxfordComma

@Decca : Girl. I went to school in LYNDEN.

Even MORE FLANNEL.

redheaded&crazy

awww clueless! I did not realize it was a pastiche (? or whatever ?) of emma until I watched it recently. So classic.

fleurdelivre

@redheaded&crazy - I did the reverse! I just watched Emma for the first time about a year ago and was totally surprised when half an hour in I realized, "This is CLUELESS! Without the Mighty Mighty Bosstones!" Whatever, I didn't buy Emma on VHS for my sister's gift when she turned 13, did I?

Daisy Razor

Yup, this makes me feel as old as finding out Frances Bean Cobain is engaged did.

Decca

@Daisy Razor WHAAAAAAAAAAT?

olivebee

I second Decca...WHAT?! How old is she?

JanieS

@Daisy Razor NO. THIS CANNOT BE. THIS IS A SIN AGAINST GODS AND MEN.

... she can't be engaged before I am she is a baby ...

Decca

@olivebee She's 19 :(

City_Dater

@Daisy Razor

God, yes. Every time I see a photo of her I cry: "No, you are a BABY!"

I still wear a pair of docs from when her father was alive (mostly to walk the dog), and I tend to forget that me (and my shoes) are now Old.

Daisy Razor

@JanieS Yup, to a scruffy, flannel-wearing musician! She's 19, so maybe it'll be a long engagement?

olivebee

I got engaged at 22 to my boyfriend of 4.5 years and even I felt weird being engaged that young. Especially since I currently (at 24) look like an 18 year old. She's still a teenager!

Porn Peddler

@Daisy Razor OMG STOP IT

jules

@City_Dater If you ever meet her you can be like "I have SHOES older than you, kid!"

Prostitute Robot From The Future

@Daisy Razor I still think 1990 was ten years ago....

joie

MANSFIELD PARK. I still listen to the soundtrack! I must have watched that 50 times when I was in high school, normally with back-to-back viewings of Good Will Hunting. No joke, there are pictures somewhere of me cheesily grinning next a freeze-frame of Matt Damon's beautiful face.

rien à dire

"Learning to play the soundtrack to Phantom of the Opera on the piano"

This! I can't say that I actually succeeded though. Ah, regrets.

SarahP

@rien à dire I never aspired to sing it, I just aspired to know every line--not just of every song, but of all the dialogue.

applestoapples

Oh, also, this post reminded me that "Say No More, Mon Amour" is a fake pop song for the ages.

becky@twitter

@applestoapples for a long time that was my ringtone.

@applestoapples Don't let's forget Du Jour's "Back Door Lover." Or 2gether's "U + Me = Us (Calculus)." TIMELESS.

My favorite part about this song is that AJ doesn't even attempt a French pronunciation ("moan aymore"), whereas apparently Mark is actually French.

And the music video, of course.

applestoapples

@becky@twitter My biggest wish is that someone would institute Rex Manning Day as an actual celebration.

applestoapples

@remargaret Oh, God. I would need a whole separate post to discuss 2gether.
I'm sorry, I mean 2ge+her.

becky@twitter

@applestoapples i smell a rex manning day pinup!

joie

@applestoapples ohhhh Rexy you're so sexy!

yrouttasight

@applestoapples Welcome to Empire Records, how may I service you?

I'm...not a big fan of Renee Zellwegger, but I love her in that movie. Her character was awesomely slutty.

Ophelia

@yrouttasight Was that Renee Zellweger or Joey Lauren Adams? I seriously can't tell 90s-era them apart.

becky@twitter

@applestoapples uhm. i'm kinda ashamed to admit this, but i have the song that the rival 2gether band (whoa!) sang in the 2gether movie on my phone right now. rub one out, baby, don't be shy.

becky@twitter

@Ophelia it was renee. joey lauren adams was in bio dome, however.

joie

@becky@twitter watching Empire Records makes me a little sad, because I love 90s era Renee Zellewegger. She was such a hottie and could sing like a motherfucker.

applestoapples

@becky@twitter Dude, I know all the words to "Rub One Out."
And remember, "Say It, Don't Spray It"?

becky@twitter

@applestoapples next time i am in new york, we need to figure out a way to karaoke the hell out of that song. after a lot of drinks.

becky@twitter

@heyits sometimes fires don't go out when you're done playing with them.

Lamar Anderson

@heyits "You greet me with a smile and a glass of rosé / I find myself distracted by your black negligee"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szvt8iWJ0oo

Lamar Anderson

@becky@twitter I actually bought the Coyote Shivers album with the "Sugar High" song on it and was somewhat put off when I heard the real chorus, which reveals the source of the sugar high (hint: it's cunnilingus). There was also the song "Happiness Is a Warm Bong."

Stevie

So the Stealing Beauty obsession was just me, then?

dk
dk

@Stevie Is that the one where Liv Tyler writes in a journal? I was obsessed with her "I am as quiet as a cup" line and would collage crazy things in my journals to seem as deep as her.

Ophelia

@Stevie Oh, I'm right there with you.

Stevie

@dk Won't you come and rattle me?

yrouttasight

@Stevie Talk about an AMAZING soundtrack! Liz Phair, Portishead, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, John Lee Hooker...oh man. So good. I still listen all the time.

scully

@yrouttasight Yes! I wore that soundtrack OUT! Literally b/c it was on a cassette tape.

Lamar Anderson

@dk I was never able to get the journaling-in-the-bathtub thing down.

beanie

Some of these things I just think ALL highschoolers are going to be into for the end of time. AKA I had a weird obsession with Cruel Intentions, Romeo & Juliet (especially the soundtrack and a young-pre-pudding face Dicaprio), and Empire Records. I went to high school from 2001-2005. Or maybe I was just nostalgic for the 90's really early.

cuminafterall

@beanie Yeah, I went to high school the same time as you and I don't think Sublime ever went away, either.

cuminafterall

@cuminafterall Just to clarify, this is my conclusion from hearing people play "Santeria" at the school talent show, not from my own personal taste.

Decca

@cuminafterall I went to secondary school from 2002-2008 (in Ireland, too) and most of those things were applicable. Also: Sylvia Plath, Girl, Interrupted, cutting holes in the sleeves of your jumper so your thumbs poked through.

Brunhilde

@cuminafterall Oh god, every party I ever went to in high school, the music selection was limited to a) Sublime, b) The Doors, or c) Wu Tang. I felt like there was an unwritten law about this.

Hellcat

@Decca I still look for sweaters and shirts with this feature already in them (because now I am a grownup and want a "finished" look, I guess?). It sucks when you forget you're wearing this type of sleeve and wash your hands business as usual.

Fodforever

@beanie Ha, pudding face! Seriously, post-Titanic Leo looks like he got stung in the face by a bee... and also that he was allergic to bees.

Even in Titanic he was starting to get all squint-eyed. Not that I've spent any significant length of time studying the morphology of Leo's face or anything...

beanie

@Fodforever Is it weird that I'm worried this has happened to Zac Efron? Especially after I saw photos of him all buffed up for his new Nicolas Sparks crap fest?

Katherine Farmar@twitter

Did anyone ever manage to figure out what the lyrics to "Jeremy" were? And if they did... HOW?!

Also: oh, Dawson's Creek! Never have I been more addicted to a show that I hated on almost every level! I say "almost" because it had Michelle Williams in it, and Michelle Williams, then as now, is the kind of actress who can transcend her material. But, wow. What was it about Dawson's Creek that made me never miss an episode, even while I was muttering "Christ this is terrible, SHUT UP DAWSON oh God he's talking about movies again KILL ME NOW" every single week? It is a mystery!

DH@twitter

@Katherine Farmar@twitter

I've been watching Dawson's Creek for the first time (I wasn't allowed to when it was on the air since I was like 10 years old). It is AWFUL. And WONDERFUL.

And I need to get ahold of its sad little summer spinoff, Young Americans.

beanie

@Katherine Farmar@twitter my brother always hoped that the ending of the series would be Joey Potter giving a tour of their hometown, and then reflecting that Dawson had drowned himself in the creek since he never made anything of himself. Everyone did not like Dawson. Team Pacey 4 eva.

becky@twitter

@beanie didn't someone drown in the creek? the slutty girl character who was being raised by her grandma? [i say slutty with love]

becky@twitter

her name was abby. i just spent about 1/2 hr in a dawson's creek internet k-hole.

beanie

@becky@twitter oh man that was a really good episode. And then Jen freaked out because Abby was a bitch and everyone was acting like she was a saint. Very Heathers.

becky@twitter

@beanie she fell off the pier!

suddenvalley

@Katherine Farmar@twitter I've never hate watched a show with more hate than Dawson's Creek. I used to watch it every week and scream at the tv that NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT EVER SHUT UP DAWSON OH GOD I LUV U PACEY.

ImASadGiraffe

@DH@twitter All the episodes of Young Americans are on YouTube. First sighting of Ian Somerhalder (who is now in Vampire Diaries, my favorite terrible teenage show).

Also, anyone ever see James Van Der Beek in the Criminal Minds episode where he plays a guy with multiple personality disorder? Terrifying. The man can act.

oh, disaster

Someday, I'll show Empire Records to my grandchildren and I'll explain to them what CDs were.

yrouttasight

@andrea disaster "Rap, metal, rap, metal, rap...Whitney Houston?"

DH@twitter

@yrouttasight

Hey, it's for his girlfriend.

oh, disaster

@yrouttasight "Grandma Andrea, who was Whitney Houston?"

piggie

I know they say you can't do a trend the second time it comes around, but me and my husband are totally doing flannel again. And my middle school students keep telling me my shirts are "so BEAST."

redheaded&crazy

@piggie I would be like "stop trying to make BEAST happen. It's not going to happen."

once this chick told me my nailpolish was "so RELIGION"

My response, approximately: ._.

AndSomethingElse

@piggie Beast? Is that what the kids are saying now? Maybe I'll start saying it too, so I can be that horrible embarrassing grown-ass man who uses teen slang. I'll make sure to use it slightly wrong, too.

OhMyGoshYouGuys

@piggie Flannel is so RAVEN.

whizz_dumb

@Alexander You should make bad puns with it, that'll really drive 'em nuts. something something wildebeest. Can you still buy cassette tapes at Beast Buy? I need to replace my No Alternative tape.

cuminafterall

@piggie Beast. I kind of like it. I mostly like replacing the word "East" with "Beast" in place names. Like, "I went to my timeshare in Beast Hampton last weekend."

piggie

@redheaded&crazy Beast is totally happening! But mostly because one Cool Kid is trying really hard to make it happen. Can't fight middle school cool-attempts, so I've actually caved and used it as an example of a homograph. Also, "That's so beast" as an example of a sentence using a linking verb. Gotta reach the youth of America!

Stevie

@redheaded&crazy DID ANYONE SEE LAST WEEK'S Up All Night? There was a whole Beast joke from Job.

MrsLlama

@piggie We used to say that. I STILL say that, actually. "Beast" and "Bama" are DC's standard polar opposites.

dk
dk

@cuminafterall Beast in pig latin is East Bay, which is WHERE I LIVE.

RK Fire

@MrsLlama: I love the DC area's use of the word "Bama"! I feel like it's a clear cultural demarcator of when I've left Bmore's sphere of influence... which is perhaps the nerdiest reason ever.

whizz_dumb

@dk Me too! Beast Bay represent! Remember that beastquake waking us up last week? That was crazy, at least it wasn't a bigger beast.

MrsLlama

@RK Fire this is amazing!

Stevie

@RK Fire Is this pronounced like Ala-bama or like Cherry Bomb-a?

stonefruit

@dk oh sweet fancy Moses, I just got a joke a friend made in 2005 when she invited me to a barbecue at her parents' house in Lafayette. I'm going to go crawl under a rock for a little while.

MrsLlama

@piggie As in Ala-bama.

Stevie

@stonefruit But what is the joke?!

thebestjasmine

Resolved: the romper is the current version of the overall. It only looks attractive on babies, you have to take it all the way off to pee, and we'll all laugh at old pictures of people wearing them.

nocomment

@thebestjasmine THANK YOU. I stand strongly by my opinion that rompers are not for grown-up ladies! I do not accept them as adult clothing. I always get fooled on the rack thinking I've found a dress, and then I am THWARTED by the shorts part.

DH@twitter

I think I am obsessed with all of these things still. The day Empire Records went off Netflix Instant was the day I cried and had to watch Go instead.

Disclosure: I am 24. Not really old enough to be nostalgic about the 90s. o.O

remargaret

@DH@twitter I've been meaning to see "Go" since high school.

DH@twitter

@remargaret

It is really good! Legit though, I only got around to watching it because Empire Records was suddenly no longer available.

yeah-elle

@DH@twitter 24 is totally old enough to be nostalgic about the 90s! Well, at least the kid stuff rather than the teenager stuff.

redonion

@DH@twitter Augh, good to know because I was about to go to Netflix to check for it for my Friday night me time. I'll just have to happily settle for another round of Buffy.

Rookie (not the magazine) (not that there's anything wrong with that)

@DH@twitter What? I'm 24 and I'm nostalgic for the 90's.

Norrey

I am all about this. The more I read you, the more I suspect that you're some kind of long lost twin of mine. Only I could never get into Mansfield Park, I mean I love Austen. In a big way. But I really had a hard time getting over the whole being in love with your cousin thing. I know it wasn't a big deal at the time, and I know that biologically it's not super significant, but still...ew.

MrComment

The Cranberries? Really?

Decca

@MrComment EEN YUH-HUR HEAD, EEN YUH-HUR HEAD, THEY ARRE FIGHTING

Decca

@Decca And I still don't understand what zombies have to do with the Troubles?

yeah-elle

@MrComment Remember the video for "Ridiculous Thoughts" that had a wee Elijah Wood in it? No? That was just me, that loved that video Way Too Much?

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@MrComment My thoughts exactly. Look, I had as much bad taste as any other '90s teen, but I never liked the Cranberries for even a second.

City_Dater

@MrComment

For some reason only known to herself, my guitar teacher had me learn ZOMBIE and having this knowlege is like having a vestigial pinky finger. Em-C-G-D: the sound of the '90s...

MrComment

@Katzen-party It just seems like an odd band too have slipped through. Why not the Gin Blossoms or Toad the Wet Sprocket?

redonion

@Decca I am going to cop to doing a presentation on the Troubles in high school and writing the lyrics to Zombie around the freaking edge of my display poster like it's just so meaningful and I am just so fourteen years old in 1994, and yeah, I still don't know why zombies.

thisisunclear

@Katzen-party I dunno, I heard this last week and it took me back to a time long long ago and it kind of moved me.

Decca

@redonion I sincerely salute you.

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@MrComment Or Counting Crows? Or Hootie and the--wait, never mind.

Dr. Iris Puffybush

@MrComment The Cranberries released a new album like 2 weeks ago. I couldn't believe it. I thought they had just quietly faded away years ago!
My idiot friends and I had a long-running joke in high school about the song Linger actually being about farts...

hamster baby

i just remembered holding our (i.e., my parents') answering machine up to the tv and recording the "well, sinead o'rebellion, shock me shock me shock me with that deviant bevahior" line from empire records as our outgoing message. it was on there for weeks before anyone said anything to my mom. bit ironic, really. what a dork.

beanie

@hamster baby it's a great line!

thisisunclear

@hamster baby Why aren't my students obsessed with ANSWERING MACHINES?!

musings-of-dali

"Fee-nay! Feee-hee-hee-heenaaay!" TGIF was usually the highlight of my weekends in high school. Oh and Buffy? The entire series was EVERYTHING to my teenage self(okay, and kind of my adult self too), but the first season made this pretty out there kid feel....cool.

joie

@musings-of-dali yes. I remember watching that and thinking, wow, finally a show I can relate to! Also, I was a total Willow (I am a total Willow, who am I kidding) and it was amazing to see a nerdy girl who was actually a fully-realized character and not just a token.

DH@twitter

Also, does anyone else find themselves cycling through phases of Empire Records dudes? Like, in high school I was obsessed with Berko, of course. Then I had a (very) brief AJ phase in college. Currently in a Lucas phase. In seven years or so I might be in a Joe phase.

I doubt there will be an Eddie phase.

whizz_dumb

This is baffling. High schoolers know and like those things? These were all distant memories except Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw. That's a joke. Also, making mixtapes from anything is awesome and I fully support anyone at any age doing that.

Anne Helen Petersen

@whizz_dumb I promise you. They love these things. But my students are also.....unique.

disco_clone

Bodysuits will be back, mark my words. There's already tons of em on ASOS...

MrsLlama

@disco_clone I HAVE TWO! But in the 90s they all had snap crotches for easy peeing, and the ASOS ones do not.

They look fierce with black jeans though. Like, Jo Reynolds fierce.

unfortumissy

Yes, to all of this, except I'm pretty sure that technically Hemingway is something from our Great-Grandparents' high school years? Like, Lady Brett Ashley did not spring from the loins of the 90s like some kind of Spice Girl (oh, that she had)

joie

@unfortumissy see: that one scene in City of Angels where Meg Ryan reads A Moveable Feast and has weird sexy vibes with angel Nicolas Cage. ALSO a movie with a great soundtrack!

katherine

You mean I can't blame not having Fiona Apple tickets on damn kids these days?

MrsLlama

Man... I wish I kept more stuff from the 90s/high school. I mean WHO EVER THOUGHT it would come back in style? I kept my Docs (and wear them again!) but I had some amazing velvet babydoll dresses and these KILLER black satin disco platform shoes that I wish I hadn't given/thrown away.

NeenerNeener

@MrsLlama Whoever thought the 80's would come back? Let that be a lesson. Hoard everything always.

Hellcat

@MrsLlama AWWWWWWW! You had me at "black velvet babydoll dresses."

dotcommie

but where does frosted lipstick stand? candy/hemp/puka shell necklaces?

also i just watched my so-called life last year for the first time (i'm 24) and it was awe.some.

just reading in a boat no big deal

I had a huge crush on Griff Hawkins on "Boy Meets World." And then I found out two months ago that that part was played by ADAM SCOTT?!?!! It's kind of still a sexy part, though. Adam usually plays douches or lovable dorks now (Parks and Rec, forever). I like him as an ultra-smoothie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBu2enJq-Ik.

You're welcome.

DH@twitter

@lamigra

Unholy zombie Jesus, thank you!

suddenvalley

@lamigra Ugh, so handsome.

Limaceous

Yes to all of this, though much of it actually overlaps with early college. A few months ago had a slumber party weekend with my best friends from undergrad. We drank wine and rewatched Romeo + Juliet (Hey there Freshman Class in 1996!) and agreed it was still really, really good.

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@Limaceous I've just been thinking I need to rewatch that movie--I'm glad it holds up! I was frighteningly obsessed with it...

EB
EB

Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Natalie Merchant
Reality Bites
Learning to play the soundtrack to Phantom of the Opera on the piano
Learning to play “Everything I Do, I Do It For You” on the piano

Aaaaaaaaaaah get out of my memory it's scary in there!

lobsterhug

@EB I still want to learn how to play the piano and guitar better. I met a gal recently who was taking piano lessons and I was so jealous.

Also, how, how can the youth not love Ani and Tori and dancing to My Sharona in gas stations. I don't get it.

becky@twitter

@lobsterhug evian is naive backwards.

EB
EB

@lobsterhug I've been wanting to get back into the piano but sadly the only instrument I have in my grownup life is my old saxophone. It's just not the same.

sevanetta

@EB I can't understand why there weren't more people in this thread lamenting the lack of Ani. Untouchable Face, people. UNTOUCHABLE FACE. I loved that song instantly the first time I heard it and it is so incredibly timeless and so suited to teen angst AND YET still speaks to me 15 years later! what is wrong with the youth of today, etc.

yeah-elle

Now I have "My Sharona" stuck in my head. Yesssss.

Slutface

What about Robin and Stone on General Hospital?!

anachronistique

@Slutface A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES.

beanie

@Slutface not the same soap opera, but I still reference the Princess Gina storyline on Days of Our Lives, and Bo and Hope's boat, the Fancy Face.

becky@twitter

@beanie pWincess GEEEENA!

PatriciaPepoire

@beanie No lie, they are bringing back the Princess Gina storyline on Days of Our Lives. ITs like the 90s on that show all the time! Original Austin and Carrie, Lucas, Stefano being a machiavellian puppet master messing with John, Hope, Marlena, and Bo, original Billie. Seriously, it is weird.

You probably won't read this because I am so late to the party, but I just thought I'd pass the info along.

Hellcat

This thread simultaneously makes me feel so happy... but so old! This was all post-college times for me!

Alter Kocker

@Hellcat Yeah, tell me about it. My high school memories involve feather earrings, parachute pants, big spiky hair, studded leather. And Doc Martens! Reading authors that are still alive was just as unfashionable then too. The only listenable contemporary music was punk and heavy metal. Well, maybe U2. Couldn't really appreciate Bruce 'till we got more grown up. This all sounds so cliché now.

Hellcat

@Alter Kocker Right there with you, except I was more the "I copy the outfits in Sassy magazine" type then (but a proud wearer of a few metal-esque accouterments now), and I was a Ramones/Sex Pistols/Cure/Smiths listener (still am). Only recently did I realize that Born to Run is not a terrible song (though I still can't say I'm a fan of Bruce). And all the time in the world will not dampen my Bon Jovi love, which I probably stifled back then to maintain my "alternative" cred!

meetapossum

This whole thread makes me smile. Time to listen to the Empire Records soundtrack!

Elleohelle

@meetapossum Right?! The movie was good, but the soundtrack was the BEST PART. Toad the Wet Sprocket? The Innocence Mission? Better than Ezra?! I MEAN, COME ON.

Summer Somewhere

Oh my god! Some of the youth at the drop-in center I volunteer for have figured out that I'm a serious music nerd, and since I came of the age in the 90s that's my strongest period for rock bands. It's so weird to nerd out with them about things I loved in the 90s that made me a freak in high school. I guess a lot of them feel like freaks, too. It warms my little heart. And makes me feel super old. (A conversation that started with Nine Inch Nails wound up with the kid saying, "I really want to get into the beginning of that whole goth thing in the 90s." Didn't have the heart to tell him about its real origins in the 80s. Or maybe even the 70s?)

Decca

@lucida console Circa 238 BC, I think

laurel

@Decca Def by c 1798 (Northanger Abbey).

Hellcat

And now I'm also thinking about the Singles soundtrack... iTunes store, here I come!

Whaaaaaaaaat?! I have to buy all the songs separately? Why?

scully

I do not see The X-Files on either of these lists!! That show WAS the 90s for me (see: my handle).

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@scully A nearly unforgivable oversight! I had a huge X-Files poster in my teen bedroom and I hoarded so many magazine photos of David Duchovny it's sick.

Hellcat

@Katzen-party Was it the "I Want to Believe" poster? And do you get really happy when you hear D.D.'s voice on the dog food commercials?

scully

@Hellcat I definitely had the I Want to Believe poster on my wall for many years. And countless DD magazine tear-outs posted right next to my bed.
But for all that, I find that it's Scully I love as I get older... I guess b/c DD turned out to be kind of a douche and GA is kind of awesome?

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@Hellcat No (but I was just thinking, "God, I wish I had the 'I Want To Believe' poster because I would put it up in my room right now!") and YES.

violetta

@scully loved the X-Files. Also had an unnecessarily large collection of X-Files posters on my walls. Actually when I was about 12 I did a school assignment on UFOs where I was quoting the X-Files hahahaha *cringe*

RK Fire

How is it that the Cranberries have staying power but Tori Amos doesn't?? Oh high schoolers of the early '10s..

marigny

@RK Fire I fell in love with Tori when I was 10 and graduated in 2005. Not sure if I'm counted, but she is always my #1.

Liina

OMFG, my husband and I are always trying to think of the ninetiest things of the nineties, and just this week "Phantom of the Opera" t-shirts overpowered Poe's "Angry Johnny."

Kids are into the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack!?!?! They were just playing that in one of my favorite restaurants a couple weeks ago...in Olympia.

They REALLY need to get into Alicia Silverstone in Aerosmith videos, though.

becky@twitter

@Liina this is jezebel in hell.

scully

@Liina ANGRY JOHNNY!!! She was totally Liz Phair lite. Until Liz Phair became Liz Phair lite.

Lemonnier

Laura Ashley dresses? Those just scream "pregnant Mormon" to me. Are they now less matronly than they were 20 years ago?

Decca

@Lemonnier I hate when pregnant Mormons yell at me :(

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

Hearing a lot of (justified!) love for the Romeo+Juliet soundtrack, but what about the movie? As a HUGE teen fan of Leo and Claire Danes, I was embarrassingly into that movie--I think I ended up seeing it in the theater something like SEVEN times. I cut out every single photo from that movie that I could find in any magazine I could get my hands on--I'm sure I still have them in a manila envelope somewhere deep in my closet.

Ah, obsessed teenage fandom before you could just follow the "fuck yeah" Tumblr and right click + save, amirite guys?

Hellcat

@Katzen-party This movie may or may not be perma-saved on my DVR... because I have nothing to play my VHS tape on anymore.

And, in an amazing bit of coincidence, my iTunes just started playing Mother Love Bone.

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@Hellcat Ah, I was so into Mother Love Bone when I was like 14! I swear to god, I'm going to go straight home after work and dig out my tape of the Singles soundtrack, as well as a GRUNGE mixtape I was inspired to make after seeing the grunge documentary, "Hype!" (I keep everything). <--I prefer saying, "I keep everything" to saying "I'm such a hoarder" because...it's too close to the truth, haha.

LilyMarlene

@Katzen-party The Singles soundtrack is probably the most underrated soundtrack of all time, and the movie...gah, it plucks my heart-strings. I still feel that shrill teenage heart-thrill when they do the flyover shots of Seattle. No matter where life takes me, some vestigial piece of me will always want to move to Seattle and hang out in that coffee shop all day (and date Campbell Scott's character and all his existential crises). And yeah, Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog/Pearl Jam wins everything. Love, love, love.

Hellcat

@LilyMarlene Mother Love Bone is STILL one of the albums that ends up on any "stranded on an island" list I might make in my head. So good. And, I think my iTunes is somehow reading this thread; it just played something from that X-Files compilation CD (unfortunately the shuffler chose Sheryl Crow and not Nick Cave. Bah).

OK, editing to add this and it is TOO WEIRD, you guys: it is right now playing a song from the Buffy musical episode! I can't... what is happening? It is on shuffle! I am freaking out just a little bit!

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@Hellcat Sometimes shuffle just KNOWS........(eerie organ music plays)

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@LilyMarlene Ha, I actually live in Seattle, and I stupidly passed up a chance to see Singles in a theater two weeks ago. I am SORELY regretting this poor life choice. And every time I pass by the Singles apartment building (IT'S REAL! IT'S STILL THERE! IT LOOKS THE SAME!), I feel such a pang wishing I could live there!

LilyMarlene

@Hellcat Hell. Yes. Here's a present for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXvqIgxvwGc I get a lump in my throat from watching this video. It's all just too much.

@Katzen-party AAAAH! Can you make friends with anyone who lives there? Offer to house-sit? Then have a massive sleepover party in their apartment with everyone in this thread? I just wanna sit on the hardwood floors and listen to records. Or smash a plate in the kitchen and exchange Meaningful Glances with Campbell Scott whilst Jimi Hendrix plays. Or sunbathe on the roof with the rotary phone cord stretched all the way in case Matt Dillon calls.

Also; buy the DVD - once you see the movie, you'll want to see it over and over again!

Hellcat

@LilyMarlene Oh, it is so beautiful, especially the part when it changes from one song to the next...

Also, Andrew Wood bears a striking resemblance to Poison Ivy-era Drew Barrymore.

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@LilyMarlene Oh, I never thought about that! I should just loiter outside of the building and see if someone wants to be friends, seriously!

I can just see my skeleton up on the roof, phone in hand, waiting for '90s (or '80s) era Matt Dillon to call, ha ha...

Hellcat

@Katzen-party And the lips! Also, I'm not sure, but I think today-era Matt Dillon looks pretty darn good too! That is a handsome man. Poor ol' Kevin though; looks enough like Matt to obviously be related, but not enough to... look like Matt (though Kevin is funny and I kind of love him).

Living My Best Life Far Away from the Hairpin!

@Hellcat Yeah...I'm being too hard on present-day Matt Dillon--I just GISed him (productive work day today) and he looks pretty good. But '80s/'90s (even '70s!) Matt Dillon just really did it for me back then. Yeah, Kevin's looks are...kind of unfortunate, particularly in comparison to his brother.

So, Matt Dillon: CALL ME.

She Saved The World, Alot

Ahh so glad today's youngsters are still into the Buffster!!!

Hellcat

@She Saved The World, Alot Just out of curiosity, do you have a preference for the earlier seasons of Buffy, or the later ones? I always notice that seasons six and seven take a lot of heat from fans, but those are my absolute favorites, and I say that as a multiple-time series rewatcher.

She Saved The World, Alot

@Hellcat I am sooo torn on this. I mean, I love ALL OF BUFFY. But I've been reading a lot of like...academic stuff on the show lately (because I do that? Oh god, nerdalert) and I can see why people have problems with Season 6 and 7. Personally, I loooooove Buffy's arc in season 6. Willow gets MAJOR side-eye from me, though, and I hated the magic-is-addictive thing because...I don't know. It seemed like a cop-out? They didn't hold her nearly accountable enough for the stuff she did? And I mean...season 7...A lot of eh okay episodes, and I didn't think it was as strong as it should have/could have been but also - made me cheer! Chosen! WE CAN ALL STAND UP. I might have cried. I might STILL cry when I rewatch that episode because...are you ready to be strong? (I am I am! I wanna slay vamps toooo!!!) (But why is it okay for Buffy to force all that ish on millions of girls but supa-terrible when those 3 guys did it to that ONE girl?) (But who caaaares. When I was 15/16/17/now, I was CONVINCED I woulda been a Potential.

But I do think that overall, there was a higher frequency of dud-episodes in 6 and 7.

Now here's a question for you: Angel or Spike (or even, I suppose, Riley? Are there ANY Riley shippers?)

She Saved The World, Alot

@Hellcat Also, in terms of favorite Seasons, I love the whole of the show so much that it is REALLY difficult for me to pick a favorite. 1-3 I watch when I'm like nostalgic for high school? Like when I want to remember being a teenager? (I'm only 22 so this is not so far removed from right now but holy crap that seems like a long time sometimes. Also I dont know why I am occasionally nostalgic for being a teenager? Simpler times?) But Buffy in Season 6? Man can I relate to that girl sometimes. So when I'm having more grown-up problems in my life, I turn to 6 and 7 and I'm like "Chin up, SStWA. What would Buffy do?"

Which, I realize, perhaps isn't the question I should ask myself with regard to Season 6 but I dont know. Solidarity with B, I guess.

Another question: Favorite episodes?

(You are probably regretting getting me started on Buffy.)

Hellcat

@She Saved The World, Alot Well... even with all the side-eye and possible cop-outs, it's awesome that a show about a tiny, adorable vampire slayer with super-power friends can actually make you think about it... years after the fact. Awesome, awesome!

And I currently have a cardboard Spike standup (standee?) in my kitchen; I actually got two from two separate people one Christmas. So...

And, no -- I regret NOTHING! One of my favorite episodes is actually "Once More With Feeling." Love it, own the CD, and tried to do the Xander/Anya routine with a friend once. I also love many of the mistaken-identity ones ("Randy"!). And, hmmm... gotta admit, I loved the Bad Willow ones.

She Saved The World, Alot

@Hellcat OH MY GOD. That is like when I was obsessed with Orlando Bloom/Legolas, and I got two cardboard standups of him for Christmas because EVERYONE LITERALLY EVERYONE thought it was the perfect/only gift for me.

I like you muchly.

@She Saved The World, Alot You are me. Just yesterday I was in a meeting at work, and something got mentioned about naming cars, and the English teacher mentioned that her car's name is Darla, and another teacher asked if it was after Darla from Buffy, and everyone was pretty much all in agreement that we love Buffy, which was nice, but then also I was THAT PERSON who was correcting people on character names and whatnot. And then the meeting ended and I spent the entire walk back to our rooms with the science teacher going on and on about Buffy and how I started watching it and how I always watched it with my dad and my brother and how important it is to me and how I'm like with most of the entertainment that I love -- if I really love something, I get kind of obsessed, and I want to know everything there is to know about the show and the actors and it's almost like I want to absorb it and make it a part of me. I FOLLOWED HER INTO HER CLASSROOM to finish this discussion. I'm sure she was regretting getting me started on Buffy.

AOpp

@She Saved The World, Alot Also, to answer your questions that were not directed at me: I wouldn't say that S6 and S7 are irredeemable or anything, and I like S5 a lot, but I think that S4 is an odd year, and that the 3 seasons before and the 3 seasons after are almost entirely different shows in terms of tone and where the focus of the show is (i.e., look at how much focus there is on the "normal world" in the first few seasons, with Buffy wishing she were normal and how they have to hide their interactions with the supernatural from everybody around them, versus the relative isolation of the Scooby Gang from the "normal world" in later years and the way that hanging out at the Magic Box all day let them talk about their supernatural ish without raising any eyebrows), and I prefer the earlier version of the show. And "Smashed" and "Wrecked" are just terrible. (Question for you: LEAST favorite episodes?)

I still have at least one favorite episode from each season, though, those being: Welcome to the Hellmouth, Prophecy Girl, Surprise, Innocence, Becoming I&II, Band Candy, The Prom, Graduation Day I&II, Wild at Heart, Pangs, Something Blue, New Moon Rising, The Body, Forever, Life Serial ("And then I will raise penguins with Bob Dole in Guam."), Once More with Feeling, Tabula Rasa, and Conversations with Dead People.

BUFFY/ANGEL 4EVA. I love Spike as a character, but as far as Spuffy goes, I have a lot of issues with Buffy and Spike's relationship.

There are no Riley shippers.

She Saved The World, Alot

@Hellcat The musical! Ah! It was like the best moment of my high school life since the Xena musical that I like BARELY remember, because I wasn't actually allowed to watch Xena at the time.

My favorite episodes, by season (of the top of my slightly wine-addled head right now, subject to change, of course,): Prophesy Girl, Innocence, [season three was so good! Ah! Earshot! Helpless! Graduation Day Part 1! BAND CANDY! RIPPER! OH MY GOD RIPPER and Teenage!Joyce!), Something Blue/Beer Bad (Beer Bad is so silly but I love it) HUSH and Restless, Season 5: The Body, raining on my face ALL THE TIME, and The Gift (that episode made me have a mental breakdown) Season 6: Every scene in which Buffy is losing her shit over spike. And I agree, Bad Willow rocks. Season 7: Take On The Night, Conversations with Dead People, Showtime, and Chosen!

@auktastic I actually got into a conversation with my brother today about how I took this Cult TV class and was like the Oracle of Buffy (which I think freaked everyone out) and how when we FINALLY watched Hush in class I like couldn't sit still, I was basically dancing in my seat in excitement the whole time. My professor asked me, in all seriousness, to explain why I felt so strongly about the show, and I was like "Because I practically AM Buffy, guys. I mean, that girl. That show! Everything is lovely." Not academic at all, but my professor was like, I hear you, chica, I'm a Cult TV professor. I know how it is.

Then, for my final project, she let me gush about Firefly and the use of archetypes in the Whedonverse, so I was very happy. I made a powerpoint that was made up entirely of fan art.

She Saved The World, Alot

@auktastic I think deep down I am a Buffy/Angel shipper too, actually, especially because of Spike's attempted rape in Season 6 that is then never seriously addressed ever. Same problem that I have with Willow being a closet date-rapist forever in terms of wiping Tara's memory and then continuing their relationship for her convenience. And to be totally honest, this hadn't occurred to me until incredibly recently when I read an article that was like, yeah, Willow basically channeled the great rufie spirit for every episode of season 6 in terms of Tara. Mind BLOWN, and not in a good way. Very upsetting. I didn't really analyze things like that the first couple of times around.

LEAST favorite episodes? Hard to say. I mean even the really silly ones, or the one-shotty ones, in the early seasons (Witch, Never Kill a Boy on the First Date, Reptile Boy, Bad Eggs, the Zeppo, most of season 4, Triangle, a handful of season 6 and a disproportionate amount of season 7) ....I'm still really fond of all of them. I just love all the characters so much. EVEN Xander. Although - were you ever like "ugh, Xander - why does no one ever call Xander out on the massive amount of bullshit he emits?? SHUT UP XANDER YOU SUCK."

Did you know he was actually supposed to die when he got his eye poke out in Season 7? And be the face of the First? I think that would have been such a daring choice for the writers, I'm kind of upset it didn't happy.

Also - how angry did "Empty Places" make you, when all the Scoobs turn Buffy out of the house? I was irate when that happened.

Finally, this is the tumblr I'm spending all my time on tonight http://fuckyeahcordeliachase.tumblr.com/post/4851903232/turnersgonnaturn-tact-is-just-not-saying-true

She Saved The World, Alot

@auktastic But in terms of Spuffy - before Seeing Red, their relationship was SO complicated and interesting and they were both so fucked up and compelling. Such an interesting TV relationship. And some relationships are fucked up like that, ya know? I feel like the dark place that it went to needed to be handled better (or, you know, at all) but they had some cojones for even taking it to that level, you know? I remember my dad being SERIOUSLY disapproving of Season 6 (I grew up in one of those families where my parents would watch questionable TV with me, and then discuss it, to make sure my pliable teenage mind wasn't being too influenced, ya know?) but now I'm all like BUT DAD! QUESTIONABLE SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS, BAD SEXUAL DECISIONS (pre-SR) HAPPEN! AND THEN YOU LEARN FROM THEM. And then he gets all uncomfortable and wishes he had never let me watch the show in the first place.

AOpp

@She Saved The World, Alot DUDE. If I could make a living out of watching and analyzing and talking about my favorite tv shows, I would be a happy camper. If I was more sure about the job prospects, I would have majored in American Studies in a heartbeat. As it is, I just got to take a couple of American Studies classes, including one that was supposed to be about Buffy but ended up being about apocalyptic fiction in general (still cool), mostly from the 1950s and focusing on straight white dudes (not so cool), and another one that was about comics and let me write about Marvel's Runaways and spill my little shipper heart all over the page.

Yeah, there are a LOT of issues around murky consent happening in S6. I'm glad that the ish with Willow and Tara is shown to be a bad thing, but it's not really portrayed as rape-y so much as just Willow being selfish and not really thinking about the ramifications of her magic use -- a symptom of her "addiction." And when they're back together at the beginning of Seeing Red, there's no magic, and that's presented positively. So while there's definitely some shady, rape-y stuff going on with Willow and Tara, it doesn't bother me quite as much as the Spuffy rape scene, which was much more explicit.

With a lot of the silly episodes, I'm still fond of them for the character moments they contain (like, I love Witch, even though it's such a silly episode, because magic-drugged-Buffy is just so cute and hilarious), but there are still a couple of episodes that I just cannot stand. Like Wrecked and Smashed. And Where the Wild Things Are (or as I've heard it described, "the creepy sex episode"). Where the Wild Things Are, in addition to being just a terrible episode, just pisses me off because (a) WAY TO HIGHLIGHT THE DOUBLE STANDARD by having AN ENTIRE EPISODE about Buffy/Riley sex, but Willow and Tara weren't even allowed to KISS until S5!!!!! and (b) Buffy/Riley sex. Ew.

SO pissed off at Empty Places, omg. LEAVE IF YOU DON'T WANT HER THERE. IT'S HER FREAKING HOUSE. And for me, the most anger-inducing Xander moment is in Becoming, when he's supposed to tell Buffy that Willow's going to try to re-ensoul Angel again, and instead he just encourages her to kill Angel, like IF SHE'D KNOWN WHAT WAS GOING ON, THINGS COULD HAVE GONE SO DIFFERENTLY!!! AND THEN HE GOT TOTALLY LET OFF THE HOOK FOR IT, IT DOESN'T EVEN GET MENTIONED AGAIN UNTIL SEASON 7!!! Grrr.

With Spuffy, even before Seeing Red, their relationship is so fucked up, where they hate each other, and his affection for her is largely sexual (it's not like he admires her strong principles or not killing people, or whatever), and the fact of BuffyBot's existence, while providing for some wonderfulness later on, is just creepy, and then in S6 he's mainly there taking advantage of her pain, and she's sleeping with someone she hates mainly because of how much she hates herself, like it's almost her version of self-harm (she even describes it as something she does just to force herself to feel something other than numb, which is basically how self-mutilation was described to me by an old roommate who struggled with it, like she would dissociate and feel not connected to her body and the physical-ness of self-harm brought her back, and that pain was preferable to dissociation), and maybe destructive, fucked up relationships like that do happen, but they're not ones that I want to watch or cheer for, even in a fictional context. And then even after he gets his soul back, and the nature of their relationship changes because he's officially one of the good guys... I still refuse to believe that he actually went out in search of a soul, rather than looking for something that would give him power over Buffy, to let him "give her what she deserved." I hated that twist, that it's very apparent that he's looking to do damage to her and then "oh look, he got his soul back instead!" and then it's played off like that's what he was after the whole time and I just... ugh.

AOpp

@She Saved The World, Alot Also, your conversations with your dad about Buffy are hilarious to me, because this is how my first conversation with my dad about Buffy went:

Dad: [Watching his S3 dvds, already near the end of Graduation Day]

Me: [Walk into the living room just in time to see the giant, poorly-CGIed snake appear. Sit down on the couch and watch the rest of the episode with him, mainly out of curiosity/bewilderment]

[Episode ends]

Me: WTF was that????

Dad: [Hands me S1 dvds]

I watched S1 in a single night with my best friend, but the rest of the seasons I watched with my dad and my younger brother. I was only there on the weekends, so we'd watch multiple episodes in a single sitting, staying up until all hours of the night, and we finally watched S7 in the car on the way to Florida to visit my grandparents (my dad made my step-mom drive so he could sit in the back with us and watch Buffy on the portable dvd player). So it was kind of "our show."

Also, one time I mentioned something about the show's use of magic as metaphor for lesbian sex with Willow and Tara, and my dad had no idea what I was talking about (despite this being the kind of thing he would normally pick up on), so I had to explain it to him. I was probably... 17 at the time? So NO NOT AWKWARD AT ALL (except, actually not all that awkward, because my family's always been VERY open).

Hellcat

@She Saved The World, Alot The Buffy kick-out (of her own home!) still pisses me off to this day! It was her house!. Not to mention the fact that she was the one who had to get a job at the Burger Palace! She had to? No one else felt the need to work while living in Buffy's mom's home?

She Saved The World, Alot

@auktastic Ah! First of all, I am SO EXCITED that we are talking about this. You have no idea!!

I think for Where the Wild Things Are, they just literally weren't allowed to show Willow and Tara kissing. Like, the network wouldn't let them do it, and Whedon had to threaten to quit before they finally budged and let them get one chaste kiss. Seconded on the eww Buffy/Riley. I hate Riley what a tool.

Okay, so re: Spuffy v. Bad Willow. I DEFINITELY see where you're coming from. The problem I had with Willow's abuse of Tara, though, is that it's ISN'T portrayed as abuse, necessarily, and it is downplayed, in my mind, to being more about Willow's selfishness and magic addiction than her systematic and repeated abuse of her girlfriend. Because at the end of the day, to me, I just can't get around the fact that 1) if we're gonna go with the magic is a metaphor for drug addiction thing, then Willow literally drugs Tara, takes away her ability to consent, and rapes her over and over again and 2) I was not aware of this for YEARS. It literally took me reading an essay recently (like, a month or two ago) that spelled it out for me to be like "holy shit, Willow is a rapist." And on the show, that aspect of the Willow/Tara relationship was never addressed. They were more concerned with saving her when she killed Warren than ever going to Tara and being like "Um, are you even okay?"

And the other reason why that bothers me so much more than when Spike tries to rape Buffy mostly comes from #2 - the scene in Seeing Red just reinforces so much about rape culture/rape myths as to what rape or attempted rape looks like - it's violent, its a guy forcing himself on a girl, it's her repeatedly saying "No!" and being ignored and physically forced. Whereas Willow and Tara NOT being considered or treated like it's rape also plays into these stereotypes - women can't rape, date rape isn't real rape, you can't rape someone if you're in a relationship with them, etc, etc. THAT is why Willow's abuse of Tara is so much more disturbing to me. We see it as wrong because her addiction to magic is wrong and destructive to her, but we don't see it as rape, which I think is dangerous and irresponsible of the show's writers.

In terms of Buffy and Spike's relationship...I mean I didn't approve or cheer for it, but I think that it was something that the show definitely got more right than Willow's drug addiction arc. Also (and possible TMI here) because I was in a similar situation with a guy for about 2 years, where I didn't respect him or even like him, really, but we just kept using each other...and that was destructive (for me) and it took me a long time to realize it and be able to stop. It wasn't nearly as dramatic, obviously, and it never got to the point of Seeing Red, thank god, but I did think that it was brave of the show to take their heroine and kind of tear her down and let her make these horrible decisions that are bad for her and then also have her fight her way back up from there. And I don't know, this sounds so corny and ridiculous but I guess kind of being able to see a character go through that on the show and still be kick ass and awesome made me not feel like a huge disgusting slut so...go show? Mainly, I think it was overall a "good" thing to have in the show because I feel like a loooot of people make horrible sexual decisions when they're that young (or even just in general), and do things that are bad for them, and then learn and have to fight to recover and its hard and painful and etc etc etc.

I do think that Spike is primarily attracted to Buffy because of the sex and the whole "doing a Slayer" thing but there are also some really interesting things written on his character development as well, and the way that he approaches relationships and women (making them into his muse/trying to possess them without actually knowing them). He does say, I think in Season 5, "I know that I'm a monster, but you treat me like a man," and also Buffy really gives him a place in the world after he gets his chip in, which I also think is interesting. He does good things but not from the place of having a soul - so what does that mean about the nature of good and evil (especially considering the fucked up things that Willow does WITH a soul, and the way Xander is just generally pretty much a slut-shamey misogynistic douche WITH a soul). I don't get how Spike thinks Buffy treats him like a man, though, because even before they're having sex, she belittles him and is disgusted by him, and yet relies on him to take care of Dawn seemingly without thinking "Maybe I shouldn't be such an asshole to this guy who a) claims to love me and b) is always willing to help me out no matter how much I shit on him." But Buffy is very black and white when it comes to no soul/ensouled stuff. (Which, come on. Angel, love him, but he's shitty to her even WITH a soul a lot of the time. So.)

I DEFINITELY agree that Spike didn't ask for a soul. He totally was trying to get his chip out to be evil again so he could kill Buffy (or worse) and that demon tricked him by giving him his soul. "Make me as I was" to me definitely translated to, "I wanna be evil again!" not "give me a soul!" and I don't know why the writers in season 7 played if off like Spike went asking for a soul as some grand gesture of atonement or something.

This guy is great for Buffy-analysis. I think he was a gender and identity politics/classics scholar and now teaches a class ON BUFFY (this is my dream job) from that standpoint and he is absolutely brilliant. If you're interested in having a lazy Sunday :)

She Saved The World, Alot

@auktastic PS your dad sounds awesome. My dad will occasionally watch Buffy with me, but when he does, it's mostly to tell me how much Star Trek is a better show haha. But I think he secretly likes Buffy, too (the high school episodes, at least, before ALL THE SEX was happening. And he takes issue with Willow/Tara because LESBIANS ON TV OMG!) (I'm working on getting him out of his default homophobia/negative attitude toward sex in general. It's a slow process, but now instead of being like "Willow and Tara, that's disgusting!" he's more like "Sigh. Is that really necessary?" so...progress?)

@She Saved The World, Alot Aaaah, I didn't mean to disappear, I just had work eat my life for a couple days. Anyway: That came out totally wrong on my end! I didn't mean to come across like, "well the shoe didn't CALL it rape, therefore it's not, check please." I was more thinking, "it wasn't as explicitly referenced/graphically and violently shown, so it doesn't stand out as much to me or make me want to hit the fast-forward button as much." But you're absolutely right -- the very fact that that's my reaction and that that's the common reaction and that that's the reaction the showrunners expected me to have, that it isn't that big of deal, makes it into a much bigger, more problematic deal, because it's being glossed over and normalized. Thank you for calling me out on that.

In terms of going with the "magic = drugs" metaphor, though, it just gets so messed up because it WAS a metaphor for lesbian sex for so long, and it was portrayed as a positive, empowering thing (for the most part; there was the occasional warning from Giles that Willow was getting in too deep, too fast, but none of that gave off a "this is your brain on spells" type of message), and then all of a sudden it was bad and she needed to stop doing it altogether. That metaphorical weirdness throws off the whole ending, too (although I still tear up when that little girl adjusts her grip on the bat and smiles!).

Good for you for getting yourself out of a bad situation and being so forthright about it. It's so great too that you were able to recognize some aspect of yourself and your situation and find a way to feel better about it -- this is why Buffy is so great, because it allows room for that sort of thing. I guess that kind of makes me rethink my stance on Spuffy, that it was able to mean something so positive for you (and probably for others)... I just get irritated when you have those girls who "like bad boys" and think that Spuffy is so much better/hotter/preferable to Buffy/Angel without any acknowledgement of the fact that that relationship was actually really destructive and borne out of two people taking advantage of each other, rather than two people who care for each other. But your points about Spike's character development through that arc is interesting, too. Now I want to go back and rewatch some of that...

(As for the TMI, don't worry -- I'm constantly dropping major TMI bombs on people that I barely know, because I have interesting stories that don't make sense until you know all this complicated and terrible backstory, and then they're gaping at me and I'm just like, "no, you're missing the funny part!" So no worries, lol.)

Also, that lj is AMAZING and I now want to read everything that dude has ever written.

Also also, LOL your dad and his secret Buffy love (my dad loves Star Trek too! And he collects comic books. He's just a big ol' nerd, basically). And yay for progress (even if it's slow progress?)!

She Saved The World, Alot

@auktastic Oh, don't worry about it! You totally didn't come across as like "check please" haha and I totally get what you're saying about the Spike seeing being more graphic and disturbing. It was *horrifying* the first time I watched it, especially because it's BUFFY, man, if anyone is supposed to be able to have that NOT happen, it's her. She's got super powers. She beats dudes up on a daily basis. I mean it would have been a disturbing scene regardless of who the character was, but especially after everything she had been through in that season, it was just really rough. AND then in season 7, aside from the few times Xander mentions it, she treats it like it never happened! And continued to keep Spike in her house, and leave Dawn with him. Which, ya know, sure, nobody has a right to police the way a victim copes with her assault, but WRITERS! C'mon - really, guys? The last season of a self-proclaimed feminist television program is mainly concerned with how to make a rapist a palatable hero?

I really miss the magic as a metaphor for lesbian sex thing so much. I thought it was really beautifully done. Like when Willow is floating the rose and Tara is her anchor or something? I loved those scenes. It seemed a lot more subtle than the magical crack metaphor.

I agree COMPLETELY with re: ugh bad boy fetish. I'm really kind of torn on the Spike/Angel thing, because I think Spike is perhaps more interesting (pre-Seeing Red)? And I have very little patience for Angel as a show because of the way Cordelia's character ended up being treated in like season 4. Although season 1-3 Angel - that is some high quality angst right there, and I will always, always have a spot in my heart for him and Buffy (I actually used to write Buffy&Angel 4eva all over my notebooks in middle school). But yeah, the whole Spike!>Angel fandom I think maybe has more to do with lazy fannishness? (Is that even a thing?) In terms of Spuffy, it was just that I liked Buffy being able to explore her darker impulses and learn from them because like...sex/sexuality is complicated/people make mistakes/etc, and you don't often see sex being portrayed like that on TV.

Anyyyyyway whenever you get a chance read the lj essays on Willow and Xander in particular. SO interesting! And Faith! Gotta love Faith.
