Decca

FINALLY.

alphabiddycity

@Decca I NEED the open thread. How else am I supposed to survive the drudgery of Fridays!?

SarahP

@Decca Now that it's here, I'm so excited that I don't have anything to say.

Except the picture reminds me of the Cliffs of Moher! Which are so stupidly scenic they're like something out of a fantasy novel.

Decca

@SarahP I...have never been to the Cliffs of Moher.

SarahP

@Decca When I was in college I took some linked classes that culminated in a 3-week tour of Ireland. I have never seen that much beauty in that small an amount of time.

Decca

@SarahP The cliffs are a few hours drive away from where I live. I'm the worst Irish person ever.

Daisy Razor

@Decca It's always tough to be a tourist in your own home. I took some out-of-town (Irish, coincidentally) friends on the Freedom Trail after I'd been in Boston for 5 years and I had no idea what anything was. They were like, "Are you sure you actually live here?"

Aubergines

@Decca The Cliffs of Moher are the Cliffs of insanity too!!

Decca

@Daisy Razor Ha! I did the Freedom Trail last year and my (Irish) friend and I answered all of the guide's American history trivia questions correctly. Probably wouldn't be able to do that on a similar tour here.

Biketastrophy

@Decca I've lived in Worcester for the past decade, still never done the freedom trail despite spending a bunch of time in Boston (and living there briefly for 6 months.

Tulletilsynet

@Decca
That's like never having been to the Parthenon although you've lived in Nashville all your life.

lora.bee

@Aubergines The Cliffth of Inthanity!!

AndSomethingElse

@Daisy Razor Yeah, I did the Freedom Trail a while back. Knew nothing. Still know nothing. Did not retain that information. Thought the Freedom Trail was pretty boring. You know what's lame? Paul Revere's house.

Donovanesque

@Decca We visited those Cliffs! It was very exciting for me. Usually we don't go anywhere. :) So beautiful!

mascarasnake

@Tulletilsynet Now I have Nashville Parthenon stuck in my head.

madgemmc

@Daisy Razor i've lived in london for four years and have yet to see the half of it. it is more than very ridiculuous that my interns, who are here for six months each, have seen more of the city than i have. it seems to be how i live my life. i lived in germany for a year and went to berlin for half a day. i watched a lot of dubbed gilmore girls though, and we didn't have that in the uk at the time, so i felt it beat berlin

Shayna

@Decca When you've gone to elementary school in Massachusetts, you've done the Freedom Trail at least once. Plus Plymouth Plantation, possibly Sturbridge Village, and Revere House. ;_;

celacia

@Biketastrophy Ooh. Someone else from Worcester. <3

mattewmc

Oh! This picture looks amazing!@t

EpWs

I got my first reply from my Pin Pal this week! She seems 100% awesome and I sent her a reply promptly. YAY for Pin Pal success!

lobsterhug

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Yay! I'm going to by note cards tonight and send my first letter this weekend.

These are almost insufferably twee but I love them: http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Notes-Different-Notecards-Envelopes/dp/0811870979

noodge

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher hey, i think this went down while i was gone - who can i ask about getting a pin pal?

KeLynn

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Yay Pin Pals! I was slow writing mine back but yesterday I bought lots of stickers so all my future letters will be extra beautiful and she will forgive me on my initial replying tardiness.

joie

@teenie ask @TheLadyofShalott!

MilesofMountains

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Me too! There were some shinanigans getting my letter to her, but she got it and replied!

EpWs

@MilesofMountains Every time I have successfully written a letter (hooray for using ALL THE NOTECARDS) and put it in the mail I imagine @The Lady of Shalott giggling gleefully somewhere.

moose

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher How do you get her email address though? I saw she said to email her in another thread and I scoured the 'pin and could not find such info anywhere...

EpWs

@moose sdqsdq at the gee-mails. (@Shalott, I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds here!)

Xanthophyllippa

@teenie I wanna be a Pin Pal too!

moose

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Thank you so much!! I am so excited about writing letters right now you guys! I even got my sister to find out from our mom (who I no longer speak to for good reasons) our g'ma's mailing address so I can be in touch with her! Cuz my g'ma is not an internet person and doesn't call long distance and doesn't answer the phone sometimes!

kiamaria

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I got a letter from my Pin Pal this week too!! Ditto on the awesome factor, and nearly-ditto on the prompt reply. Hurrah for Pin Pals :-)

The Lady of Shalott

@Everyone:

Oh yes!!!! For Pin Pal information, email me at sdqsdq at gmail.com, please! I will hook you guys up. Just send me your address and whether you are OK with international mail, and I will fix things for you!

Ahhh I missed an Open Thread and I missed my Pin Pal people! I love every one of you, and thank you, @Everpresent!

charlesbois

My husband bought me a fifth of mandarin vodka after I read about it in the "making friends at the bar post." It is freaking delicious. And he's making butter chicken tonight. Best husband ever?

SarahP

@charlesbois I see you your "vodka and food providing husband" and raise you a "promised we'd have a Mass Effect 3 marathon this weekend husband."

Daisy Razor

@SarahP My husband got his ME3 collectors edition in the mail yesterday and did a Snoopy dance around the living room. I don't know how we're allowed to be grown-ups sometimes.

Olivia2.0

@charlesbois Please describe this "butter chicken" in more detail?

charlesbois

@Olivia2.0 it's more correctly called murgh makhani. It's an Indian/Pakistani dish and is rich, spicy and delish. He's making the pioneer woman recipe. Highly recommended.

@SarahP and Daisy Razor - I don't know what Mass Effect 3 is (I'm old) but it sounds fun! I say we all tie for best husband of the weekend.

SarahP

@Daisy Razor WHAT IS IN THE COLLECTORS EDITION

ETA: Oh, okay, I just looked it up. I was hoping for some sort of action figure, but the features sound cool even without an action figure.

Dubliner

@SarahP ME3 only came out here today (I'm in ireland) and I have it with me but can't play it as I'm staying with my girlfriend this weekend for our anniversary. She laughed at me for caring so much about the game, but is started to understand now that there are so many things about it on the hairpin.

TheBourneApproximation

@SarahP My delightful husband has "secretly" bought me the Mass Effect 3 CE for my birthday! Yay husband! ...But my birthday is not for another two weeks! D:> Aarggh, this is going to hurt and I am going to have to turn off the internet to avoid more spoilers than I've already gotten...

madge

inspired by the many pie discussions, i bought tiny pies for dessert tonight. with that ben & jerry's ice cream that has chocolate covered tater chips in it.

how many hours till dinner? waaaaant piiiiiiie

noodge

@madge choco covered tatie chips? this is relevant to my interests...

olivebee

@madge That's the jimmy fallon flavor, right? I love Ben & Jerry's.

madge

@olivebee @teenie yes! jimmy fallon flavor ... which, when i think about it, kind of makes me go 'ew.' but chocolate covered tater chips are the best thing ever amirite?

AND i just had an idea for a PIE CRUST made out of crushed potato chips. with a chocolate cream filling? i am going to be a bajillionaire.

lobsterhug

@madge Now I want Ben & Jerry's S'mores which is the most delicious ice cream of all.

anachronistique

@madge I feel weird sometimes that my favorite B&J flavors are the Stephen Colbert one and the John Lennon one. BUT THEY'RE DELICIOUS.

tortietabbie

@madge YOU ARE A GENIUS. Please go into the potato chip pie crust business immediately!

Lucienne

@madge Jimmy Fallon's ice cream flavor made me like him more.

madge

@Lucienne me too! also his appearance on top chef all-stars when he flipped out over carla's chicken pot pie.

EpWs

@madge Oh god, I read that as "chocolate covered tater TOTS" in it, and was a little horrified.

Lucienne

@madge Yeah! Plus he had the Zombies on his show. You go, Jimmy Fallon!

Any One Ninja Plot

@madge 16-year-old me would have loved Jimmy Fallon flavor ice cream. When he had adorable bedhead and sang cute songs on SNL and I would Google (alta-vista? AOL keyword search? How did I internet in 1999?) screenshots of him and print them out super pixelated and tape them to my bedroom wall.

Jizzcliner

@Lucienne I did not know he had them on his show. They are absolutely the best.

ThisLittlePiggy

@Any One Ninja Plot - I met Jimmy Fallon at a party a few years ago (I don't even know how I got in, it was RANDOM) and okay, I didn't meet him, but we made eye contact, said hi, and I squeezed past him. In the process, I touched his arm. HIS ARMS ARE LIKE ROCK HARD. They're like movie star on the beach arms. I had never had a thing for him, but ever since then...dreamy.

Any One Ninja Plot

@ThisLittlePiggy 16-year-old me is soooo jealous.

Porn Peddler

@all regarding the subject of jimmy fallon, can we talk about how absolutely spooky his Neil Young impressions are? They are so accurate (he MUST be basing on that clip, he must...also that is one of the best fucking performances ever and it's a crime that it hasn't been released with better audio) they make me uncomfortable.

sevanetta

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I'm still horrified. taties??? as in potato chips??? those don't go in ice cream!!!

boyofdestiny

This seems like as good a place as any to plug the Mobile NYC Great Saunter Hairpin Meetup on May 5. It should be a fun and exhausting time!

Lily Rowan

@boyofdestiny Oh! I might actually be in NYC on May 5. But probably not sauntering further than the bar?

meetapossum

@boyofdestiny Oh, bummer. I'm going to be in Colorado then. Poo.

boyofdestiny

@Lily Rowan This is a Greater Boston Hairpin Community Production, so it's only fitting that you're involved somehow. And who knows how much of it we'll actually make it through.

NeenerNeener

@Lily Rowan: A friend really, really wants me to go to Up All Night, possibly that evening, maybe you should come to that!?

NeenerNeener

Also, just FYI, 'Pinners, there's a $20 fee for the Saunter.

Danzig!

@boyofdestiny yeah I guess

Ophelia

@boyofdestiny I think I'm coming! I might be overseas then, pending a work trip, but otherwise will saunter (I'm originally from the Boston area, even!)

atipofthehat

@boyofdestiny

I have done it 3 times, 80% twice and 90% once !

I can't wait.

Lily Rowan

@NeenerNeener I don't even know what Up All Night is, but it does not sound like my scene! Due to the fact that I like to go to bed early. I'll be with my grad school homies, so not sure if we'll be all scheduled up or what.

leonstj

@boyofdestiny - I was basically set to stroll until I heard....Boston. Gross.

Also, can anyone from New Orleans inform me how I start an awesome Walking Club to participate in parades in NY? I like the idea of walking around w/ lots of people in matching suits handing out coins and beads.

atipofthehat

@leon.saintjean

You're going to ride a bike alongside and mock us, aren't you?

NeenerNeener

@Lily Rowan: I thought the name might scare you off. But my bad, that's not even what it's called (I don't know why I keep on wanting to call it that), it's Sleep No More, a title that holds no more comfort. Anyway, this is what it is.

@leon.saintjean: It is in NYC, and how dare you call Boston gross.

meetapossum

@NeenerNeener GO TO SLEEP NO MORE. It is amazing. You will want to go again and again and again. (I've been 3 times, and I think I'll probably go again soon.)

Danzig!

@meetapossum I have tix for later this month! So excited!

NeenerNeener

@meetapossum See my post above. I am silly and keep calling it the wrong name.
Sleep No More / Up All Night, same difference!

anachronistique

@NeenerNeener SLEEP NO MORE IS THE BEEEEEEEST. I went to see it in Boston (in an abandoned school!) and it was one of the best performances of my life. If I lived in New York I'd go as often as I could.

Lily Rowan

@NeenerNeener HAHAHA! That thing does sound awesome, it's true. And now I'm just going to copy and paste the other thing you said:

@leon.saintjean: It is in NYC, and how dare you call Boston gross.

SarahP

@anachronistique Yes! We're going to see it next month because we loved it so much in Boston, and we want to see how it changes in a different location.

meetapossum

@Danzig! Wear comfy shoes! And don't be afraid to get close to actors. One might just grab you for a little one-on-one time.

leonstj

@NeenerNeener - Ugh Boston. It is the worst. I hate it. NYC Forever.

(I do, however, adore the rivalry. And omg for some weird reason, I have had a hugely and bizarrely disproportionate amount of crushes on women from boston. I also have a few really close friends from there, so it's a friendly 'hatred').

But NYC is a bazillion times superior and we know it.

noodge

since coming back from my vacation, i'm having brilliant moments of contentment and peace, then startling moments of frustration and aggravation.

today's moment of frustration and aggravation: my heavier-than-normal flow completely burst past my OB, leaving my oh-so-cute newly hand-made (by ME!) skinny khakis with a big nasty spot. which i noticed while walking to the local falafel place to get my lunch. i'm now sitting in a relatively clean, but damp and wrinkled pair of not-so-cute skinny khakis with the remnants of falafel making my breath smell foul. i need a drinky-poo.

phlox

@teenie You made pants? That is awesome.

dj pomegranate

@teenie + Super Bonus Points for making cute khakis though!

noodge

@phlox welllll... i technically just modified an old pair of slightly wide-legged/bootcut/flared khakis (from say 2004ish?) to be skinny, and hemmed them, and they're all cute and rolled a bit at the bottom and i'm so proud! but now the butt and crotch are all wrinkly and baggy from getting wet then being sat in for the afternoon :-( le sigh.

phlox

@teenie That is still cool. I am working on being at sewing but I am not brave enough to do more than just hem pants. I am sure a good real wash and dry will bring your pants back to their so-cute status.

kickupdust

yay! I've been wanting to ask other pinners this for like, two weeks now... are there any websites/blogs you check regularly and are kind of addicted to but kind of also hate in a weird way? (obviously not this one, duh.)

i ask because i have two that i alllways check in on and end up being annoyed like, why do i do this to myself?! i hate these, remember? ((galadarling.com & seaofshoes.com))

Danzig!

@kickupdust tinymixtapes.com

And Gawker / Wonkette, obvs

lobsterhug

@kickupdust Ugh, Pacing the Panic Room is that for me. It's a dad blog and I only go because he has the cutest kids ever and I love seeing pictures of them. His writing is insufferable though and makes me want to smack him through the computer.

Briony Fields

@lobsterhug Oh, I visit so many mom blogs just to enjoy the fremdscham and cute baby pics. I feel your pain!

olivebee

@kickupdust That's how I feel about surisburnbook. I hate myself for caring about celebrities (well, celebrity children, no less), but I think it's funny.

Also, I am 100% addicted to reading the forums on TelevisionWithoutPity because I watch a ton of TV and like to see what other people say about my favorite shows. But then, half the time I cannot stand reading it (even though I can't stop) because people bring up the dumbest gripes about shows and have no idea what they are talking about. Everyone's so opinionated, which is fine, but they are so in a negative way.

Roxanne Rholes

@kickupdust Hello Giggles. I check it once a week just to appreciate how amazing the Hairpin commenters are.

Ellie

@kickupdust Slate. I still read Dear Prudence and I used to comment on them a lot but I've stopped even reading the comments because they somehow got out of control suddenly, also I hate the new system. But Slate in general pisses me off.

I also up until very recently was addicted to GOMI but I totally stopped reading all blogs besides this and Ask a Manager so even GOMI's not interesting to me anymore.

nevernude cutoffs

@kickupdust Ughhh... cupcakesandcashmere. I used to love it, and now it makes me so angry (yet I still read it every morning). But now its all "ooohhh luxury items and I have time to do things that you'll never afford! And all my clothes are "gifted" to me for freeeee!" Hate, hate hateeee (yet pretty)

Danzig!

@Roxanne Rholes They did seem to launch off the blog post that captured the "WTF Chris Brown/Grammies" zeitgeist. Other than that... was it here or Jezebel that published Julie Klausner's rejoinder against "cupcake feminism"? I think it was Jez. I could've sworn I had read or was going to read a more recent screed about how cupcakes have harmed feminism but I can't recall where it is for the life of me.

MoonBat

@kickupdust
http://ansil.tumblr.com
Indigo and inspiring/annoying

Cat named Virtute

@Danzig! Not Jez or Klausner, but are you perhaps thinking of this? http://thequietus.com/articles/07962-cupcake-feminism

MilesofMountains

@kickupdust I read Corporette for the longest time, because they actually have some good career advice, but I just can't do it anymore. There's just too much stepford-lawyer advice and the comments section has become so driven by the most conservative, A-type people that I get annoyed when I read it. It's still a good source for office-people clothes, though.

klemay

@kickupdust I totally hate-read xoJane. I love everything written by s.e. smith and Leslie, but most of the rest is a hot mess.

Faintly Macabre

@Danzig! Here it is. When I searched for it, though, I found Jezebel saying they'd reprinted it there, so maybe it was somewhere else first?

Decca

@Faintly Macabre It was on Julie Klausner's own website

EpWs

@lobsterhug I am WITH YOU. Guh, insufferable writing. I read a handful of mom/dad blogs for no apparent reason and am always confused as to why I continue to do so.

Danzig!

@Marika Pea@twitter That's the one! I loooooooove The Quietus! So good about everything!

Cat named Virtute

@Danzig! Ehn, that article made me cranky. I'm tired of people (both pseudofeminists and critics) conflating cultural trends with feminism. I like heels and lipstick and knitting and baking, and it has nothing to do with my feminism until someone tries to make it so.

kickupdust

@Marika Pea@twitter ooh, awesome to find an interesting-looking new website on a thread about the ones we hate! yay!

TheFattestBunny

@kickupdust The Cary Tennis advice column ("Since You Asked") on Salon. Every single time I am blown away by how insufferable, pretentious, and just BAD at advice-giving he is. But I can't stop reading because I crave advice columns, since I have no drama in my own life!

Dorothea

@TheFattestBunny cary tennis is the worst. like this week's column where the guy wrote in to be like "i didn't let my girlfriend see her friends and i threatened to commit suicide if she broke up with me and then i got arrested when all i did was break a plate. (stupid pinko-feminist-nazi DV laws!) p.s. i have been hospitalized ever since." and cary tennis was all like, "i hope you and your girlfriend get back together! p.s. the feminists have gone too far!" and i was like AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I HOPE THE GIRLFRIEND RUNS SO FAR AWAY!!!!!

Dorothea

@kickupdust real answer: jezebel and mormon housewives' blogs.

TheFattestBunny

@blahstudent YES! I was reading that and just like, "UM? UMM?" Maybe do a LITTLE reading on abuse patterns if you're in a position to give advice that thousands of people will read! He is always terrible, but that might have been the first column of his that was genuinely disturbing to me. I was so happy about the girlfriend escaping, though!

Dorothea

@TheFattestBunny yes, agreed 100%

Gwdihw

@kickupdust

Fashion blogs: many irk me but I can't say no.

like a rabid squirrel

@kickupdust Penelope Trunk! http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/ I fall into this career spiral where I doubt every move I've ever made, but then I realize that she's actually maybe insane? But I also want to be friends with her? And then I realize it's an hour later.

Hellcat

@olivebee Oy, don't even get me started on TWOP. I used to love it so much, and now... oy. And, still, I read it... and get angry! I don't have to read it so why do I do it? I have no idea. There are a few good posters in there lost in a shuffle of contrarian (seriously, they contradict themselves depending on whom/what they're talking about), they think they know everything about everyone, they seem to believe that the one hour per week they see of a reality show is somehow showing everything a person did that week (hence the "S/he never even said/did/thought [whatever thing the posters are fussing about]" posts; I mean, how do they know someone did or didn't do a thing?), they're notorious slut-shamers, and they can diagnose Asperger's based on 30 seconds of airtime. So, yeah. But...

There are a few threads in the "TV Potluck" section that are very entertaining. I love "TV Lessons I Have Learned" for the most part, and "TV Moments That Have Scarred You for Life." And, as a person who gets strangely upset by TV ads, I like the commercials threads too. "Unpopular Opinions About TV," though, is full of people who think they have revolutionary and 100% original thoughts, though it is entertaining in that "like to hate it" way.

Whew, clearly I have Feelings about this.

thebestjasmine

Yayyy, Friday!

One kind of non yay note: can I talk here about how I really don't like the Turntable posts? And for them, it's not that I'm just not into them and happily scroll by -- they are so often with interesting people, who I would love to read a Hairpin interview with, but the way that they're structured make them so frustrating to read and hard to follow that I always just give up midway through.

mczz

@thebestjasmine I feel the exact same way.

Biketastrophy

@thebestjasmine I agree, the posts always seem super long and I usually read the first bit and skim the rest. I do miss the turntable invites though. That happened once where the 'pin all went on TT and it was highly entertaining.

Its also cause I'm just a bit obsessed with Turntable and always like people who love to chat and play music.

bitzy

@Biketastrophy Samesies. Also, the hairpin has a TT room! But right now it's just me. Come play music!

http://turntable.fm/thehairpin

Lily Rowan

OH THANK GOD. The end of this week is killing me. KILLING ME.

I know I had Items, but of course now I forget them in work annoyance. Bah.

olivebee

Speaking of hair whipping in the wind...I made an appointment for tomorrow to get my hair cut and colored. I only ever box-dye it myself, so I am nervous because I asked for the ombre-style dye job. Since I have dark brown hair that hangs between my chin and shoulders, I'm shooting for the Alexa Chung look (dark on top and honey colored at the bottom). Anyone else gone ombre? Did they do a good job?

OwlOfDerision

@olivebee I ombre'd myself with peroxide out of a box! It's hard to get wrong... the effect is meant to be haphazard rather than precise, so you don't have to be super careful.

I put bleach on the bottom 2 inches, left that for a bit, then bleached the next inch or so and left the whole lot on for a bit longer. When I rinsed it, the bottom was very blonde (more intense bleaching) and the next inch was a sort of honey colour, so there was a graduated effect.

IT WILL LOOK AWESOME I PROMISE.

OwlOfDerision

Did anyone else find that a lot of trolls came out of the woodwork for International Women's Day? :(

(oh - if you had to deal with any 'BUT WHERE IS TEH MENZ DAY WE ARE SO OPPRESSED', it's on November 19th. Trufax.)

iceberg

@olivebee no advice but that sounds badass!

saul "the bear" berenson

@olivebee I sort of have an ombre thing going on but it's just because I moved a while back and had to stop getting my hair highlighted because my rent is higher now. Verrrry grateful for this whole ombre trend.

olivebee

@OwlOfDerision @iceberg Thanks! I'm super excited (I love getting my hair done), but very nervous since I have never had not-solid-colored hair. Yay for change!

SarahP

I had a long, frustrating week, and so far my Friday is also long and frustrating. I just need it all to be 5pm! I just want to go hommmmmme.

OhShesArtsy

@SarahP This a million times. Eff you, 2:15 on a Friday. Eff you for not being 5.

SarahP

@OhShesArtsy I've been saying that since 9:26 am, when I looked at the clock and fully expected it to be 11.

Manchester Tart

@SarahP Me too, me too. I have spent all week mumbling 'how is it not Friday yet?' and now that it is, well I'm underwhelmed also. Difficult to please I suppose. Half an hour till home time, and then all the wine, and some Cadbury's I brought back from the UK.

OhShesArtsy

YOU GUYS. WORK. UGH.

alphabiddycity

@OhShesArtsy RIGHT.

OhShesArtsy

@alphabiddycity SERIOUSLY, I KNOW.

@serenityfound

@OhShesArtsy BUH

AndSomethingElse

@OhShesArtsy FOR REALS.

PistolPackinMama

Hello there, Elsinore Castle. If that really is your name. (Dunotter)

EVERYONE! I came out of boy sabbatical only to have a dude flirtatiously tell me my academic interests are an academic circle jerk. I think he was kidding, but still.

And the one from last week, Mr. Appear To Want You Out of My House Right Now Except I Offered To Drive So You Could Drink? Sent me a Reading Between the Texts-worthy hey whassssup email.

I am dooooooooooooooooooomed. I hope your romance lives are worthy of giggly porn and period sex threads, because mine sure isn't, unless romance extends to drinking a bottle of Grunerveltleiner all by myself.

noodge

@PistolPackinMama ahhhhh, that sucks! just remember it's a numbers game. eventually, it will pay off if you keep playing. AND there is the added bonus of having some hilarious stories to tell from all the ones who don't make the cut. (I want to hear about the text!)

SuperGogo

@PistolPackinMama Dunotter Castle!! I visited there half a dozen times when I studied in Aberdeen for a semester during college.

Can we just talk about how great Scotland is? I really do consider it the first time I fell in love. But unlike other first loves, I don't have to look back and wince about how I gave my heart first to someone whose biggest hobby was writing on his Converse sneakers with a Sharpie...I can look back with pride!

Decca

@SuperGogo I've only been to Edinburgh, but if that's representative then Scotland is truly one of the greatest places on earth.

PistolPackinMama

@everyone!

Scotland YES. It is the very best. My favorite is Glasgow, and then Lochgilphead on account of its proximity to Dunadd. But that isn't saying much since the rest of the place is also pretty darned awesome. Oh yeah. Scotland love up in here.

ALSO... @teenie. Basically "hi, sorry I have been busy with work, are you enjoying your vacation in _____?"

Uh...?

If this was 2 days after the date of not really seeming to want to talk to me after shirt removal, okay, I could see it. But a week+? Not sure what to make of that?

noodge

@PistolPackinMama yeeeaaaahhh. homeboy is either 1.) not into it but thinks he may be able to get his diq wet still, or 2.) into it, but oblivious and/or workaholic.

NEXT CANDIDATE.

Maria

@Decca Edinburgh is so otherworldly beautiful. I was there in September. The rest of Scotland, while gorgeous, is not quite Edinburgh. But still a-mazing.

alphabiddycity

@Maria Yes. Scotland is the greatest place in the world, Edinburgh is the greatest place in Scotland. Or something like that.

Decca

@Maria Before I went I heard that its nickname was "the Athens of the North" and I was like "ha ha, sure" but when I went I was like "Sure!".

Maria

@alphabiddycity Yes this.
@Decca I had not heard that, but I get it.

PistolPackinMama

@teenie I would love to ask what is going on in his head. Just for science.

AndSomethingElse

@PistolPackinMama Oh my gosh! Was that first guy negging you? I've never seen negging in the wild!

EpWs

@PistolPackinMama Academic Circle Jerk is either (a) a juice box or (b) REALLY TERRIBLE AT FLIRTING. Either way, you can do miles better. Keep us informed!

PistolPackinMama

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher ON A LESS WHINY NOTE.

I started weightlifting in January.

And when I flex my arms... I can see definition in the biceps.

Aw yeah, ladies. Mama's packing some really new pistols at this here gun show.

(I can't believe I just typed that.)

I totally just typed that.

PistolPackinMama

@Alexander I... I don't know? I think he was just a Tango enthusiast with Very Strong Opinions on a thing. It just so happens to be strongly worded, and about my thing.

But maybe it was a stealth neg! I've never been negged as far as I know!

EpWs

@PistolPackinMama That is potentially the best thing I have ever read on the 'Pin.

PistolPackinMama

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I am screengrabbing that comment.

dabbyfanny

@PistolPackinMama Damn, I had hoped to win the prize for first person to recognize this is Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven, N.E. Scotland, and you beat me to it. BUT GUYS!!!! I bet I win the prize for closest 'pinner to the picture, because I had fish 'n chips not four miles from this castle today - and it was very tasty.

(This week has been nuts, I flew here from the US to be with my mum, who was dying. Only she hasn't? And physically, she's doing better, maybe? But mentally, she is in mulptiple parrallel universes, and it's pretty hard going. So wish me luck....)

AndSomethingElse

@dabbyfanny Whoa. Good news, relatively speaking I guess? That sounds very difficult though.

pixieg

@alphabiddycity As a former Glasgow resident I am going to have to stamp my feet and disagree with you in a big huff!

PistolPackinMama

@pixieg Ooh! Where where?! I <3 Glasgow.

@dabbyfanny I am so sorry. Fingers crossed for you and your mum. XOXOXO

Please keep us updated! We're in your pocket/hotel room with silent encouragement and internet hugs.
That is to say, on your internet-accessible phone or on your personal computer, not like, in a weird way.

EpWs

@dabbyfanny Yow, good luck. Sending all the good thoughts your way.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@PistolPackinMama Actual drunk comment one of my (female, stick thin) friends made: "I've got some pretty decent guns. Well, I don't know, I guess they're not really guns... they're more like bows and arrows. I've got some pretty sweet bows and arrows." (I love her.)

dabbyfanny

@Pistol & inkcrafter& everpresent & alexander THANK YOU! You guys are the best. I love the 'pinners, even with over a thousand open posts, I still get sympathy and encouragement <3! My mum has defied the medical community for over thirty years with RA and multiple side complications. Right now she's got septicaemia and pneumonia and is on some serious antibiotics, definitely seems better but the doctors are hedging their bets...she has some lovely nurses who really know their shit, tho, and I'll continue to fight for the NHS's honor on the web and on the beaches (sorry, getting loopy). Just glad I can be here with my dad and sisters, really. xoxo

wee_ramekin

I NEED SOME MORE SHERLOCK FANFIC from sophia_h right now!!!!

I've been watching the Sherlock seasons, and DAMN woman, your fic is so on point!!

wee_ramekin

Um, obvs NSFW.

area@twitter

@wee_ramekin I have some wonderful dirty links to share with you when I get home.

Cat named Virtute

@wee_ramekin Thank you thank you thank you for this. I am an unhealthy level of obsessed with Sherlock/Benedict Cumberbatch right now. This is extremely helpful.

frigwiggin

@wee_ramekin Sherrrrrlock. (I had...a Sherlock dream the other night. I feel kind of embarrassed, but it made up for the dream I had before that where someone broke into our house and held us at gunpoint.)

wee_ramekin

@Marika Pea@twitter You guys! sophia_h is a Pinner! She is a Pinner who makes up gorgeous, sexy stories about Sherlock and Watson and she makes me believe they might fall in loooooooove in her stories as well as having all the sex and and and this is exactly what I want for them after having watch the show! You guys, she's brillz. Seriously.

More battenburg, vicar?

@figwiggin Last night I dreamt that I was on an old people's outing, looked out of the bus window to see a kitten rolling around on top of a wall, and then someone shouted 'look out there - that's the Olympic Kitten!' And in the dream I knew that of course the olympic games have a kitten andI was so excited that I'd seen it! God knows I know it's not Sherlock, but I did wake up really happy that I'd seen the Olympic Kitten with my own eyes.

kickupdust

@wee_ramekin ohhh noooo that site isn't blocked by my work filter - all the literary readins i do on bartleby.com are about to be replaced by fanfiction.

frigwiggin

@More battenburg, vicar? That's a fantastic dream. I love the weird dream-knowledge that makes so much sense at the time but that is ridiculous when you wake up.

Dancercise

I watched series 2 this week and oh man it was SO GOOD. Martin Freeman is so underrated as an actor.

More battenburg, vicar?

@figwiggin Nothing weird about the Olympic Kitten, my friend.

frigwiggin

@More battenburg, vicar? Well, of course I meant everything aside from the Olympic Kitten.

realtalk

@wee_ramekin OMG SHERLOCK FANFIC. have you read greywash? obvs nsfw, obvs spoilers for reichenbach.

omg i can't believe you read fanfic too. I love finding fandom-y people in arenas other than fandom, it's such a pleasant surprise!

More battenburg, vicar?

@figwiggin We're so poor now I think the opening ceremony of the London Olympics will just be the kitten rolling around a bit.

wee_ramekin

@realtalk I actually don't read fanfic! Or rather, I hadn't read any before sophia_h linked hers on a thread a week ago. I haven't read Greywash, but I'll check it out!

I admit to feeling a little scared to branch out from sophia_h. Her fanfic was literally perfect, and I almost don't want to read any one else's ideas about the John/Sherlock relationship.

frigwiggin

@More battenburg, vicar? I can't think of a single person who would complain.

mabellegueule

We had a successful Montreal pin-up last night! weeeee :)

Also I always get confused and slightly fearful when the open thread goes up before Ask A Dude, because I wonder/fear that there won't be one this week.

Cat named Virtute

@mabellegueule Apparently we accidentally had two! There were three of us sitting near the door who must have missed the rest of you, per @teffodee. We'll have to be more overt (in a less dark place?) next time! But our minipinup was fun anyhow!

Decca

@Marika Pea@twitter Awh that is so sad but also cute!

Cat named Virtute

@Decca The tagline for my life! (maybe.)

slutberry

@Marika Pea@twitter IT JUST MEANS WE NEED ANOTHER `PINUP!

The pinup was awesome and now I get to tell everyone "I had drinks with people from the Internet, but they were in Real Life!"

Lily Rowan

@mabellegueule I am more and more afraid there is no Ask A...! But it will be there when I get home, right? Right??

Cat named Virtute

@teffodee Agreeeeeeed.

thenotestaken

@mabellegueule Oh heyyy! So sad my little hairpin sign didn't work properly! But yes, another one would be great!

Briony Fields

The week is OVAH here in Europeland and I am unwinding with wine and jelly beans. And peace and quiet until about 15 seconds ago, I hear my roomie rattling the door....

alphabiddycity

Oversharing time! Things are going super well with this guy, gals. I am trying to play it cool. Playing it cool is SO HARD.

How do you deal with the pre-potential-relationship jitters!?!?!? It's way too early to Seriously Talk about anything. And there are so many things that could go wrong and I don't want any of them to!

dj pomegranate

@alphabiddycity I have no advice except to say I FEEL YOU because I am really bad at playing it cool. I just can't do it and have basically given up trying. But don't think about things that can go wrong! It will prevent you from enjoying the things that are going right!

noodge

@alphabiddycity ah! it's the worst! use your lady friends as a sounding-board/distraction tool (oh HAI!) and try to keep distracted by awesome things you love to do... that, along with waiting AT LEAST 24 hours from feeling an emotion to communicating it to the new guy are my pieces of advice. (I struggle with the anxieties/neuroses of new relationships, and the 24 hour rule helped me avoid blurting these things out when they normally don't need to be said in the end, it's just the brain going a little nutty...)

SarahP

@alphabiddycity This is not oversharing! I don't know how you deal. My usual method was to check my email repeatedly while simultaneously googling the guy's name.

It is a good thing for both my mental health and dudes in general that I am no longer on the market.

alphabiddycity

@SarahP "My usual method was to check my email repeatedly while simultaneously googling the guy's name."

Replace "email" with "texts" and you've got my coping strategy thus far. Mixed with repeated complaints to my friends of "UGH, I've got to wait TWO MORE DAYS before our next date!?!?"

I'm pretty sure all of my friends are so tired of hearing about it constantly via gchat.

madge

@alphabiddycity try to imagine how your 80 year old self will look back on this time. so exciting! so sweet! so uncertain! heck, i'm only 39 and i still look back on some of the beginnings of my other relationships and smile ... there is something so lovely about these times. lovely and crazymaking.

this probably won't work all the time, but maybe it'll help distract you during your 24 hour feelings waiting period (which, teenie, is a BRILLIANT idea).

nevernude cutoffs

@teenie That is a great tip. I have been holding in the angries for days now, because I feel like this guy I've seeing for about a month is done. I'm on the fence about trying to contact him, because I feel like it's pretty clear he's not interested anymore. The worst. My friends say definitely don't. EMOTIONS!!!!

slutberry

@alphabiddycity I always want to talk about EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY.

AndSomethingElse

@alphabiddycity I am TERRIBLE at playing cool. We should have a contest to see who's less cool.

Nevernude, :( that sucks.

iceberg

@alphabiddycity I have literally never played it cool. Why bother, anyone who doesn't like you when you're being uncool isn't going to stick around for long!

nevernude cutoffs

@Alexander Yeah, it's not the greatest feeling, but I'm ok. (might just be playing it cool though)

AndSomethingElse

@iceberg There's a lot to be said for this. "Here I am! I am uncool, and I am into you." There's sortof a perception that dudes will be freaked out if a woman says that...but many of us are thinking exactly the same thing. (and then telling the girl that and then getting dumped because we freaked her out. Oh hi, every college relationship.)

Nevernude, you BE okay homegirl. High five. And so what if you're just being cool? Fake it 'til you make it. I've always remembered something Dan Savage said: in your whole life, you get a maximum of one relationship that doesn't end.

ETA: unless you're polyamorous.

Inkling

@alphabiddycity
It's the having that counts. Even if everything goes right with this guy, he will still die. So, focus on the time that you have him and totally ignore the future, because literally a billion things could happen and going crazy over that doesn't help you enjoy your now that is happening for sure.

whizz_dumb

@alphabiddycity Holy crap I am in the exact same place except reverse genders. I don't think she visits this site (deal breaker?) or I'd ask if we were dating. You said it though, this stage is torturous. stay cool. stay cool. stay cool. this is my mantra.

AndSomethingElse

@Inkcrafter Even if everything goes right with this guy, he will still die. Ha! Glad we didn't get dark or anything.

:Cinnamon Girl:

Also, WHY IS EVERYONE SO OBSESSED WITH PLAYING IT COOL (especially women)???

It took me approximately 1 time of getting my heart crushed from playing it cool to realize that it's just not worth it.

KEEPING IT REAL > PLAYING IT COOL

AndSomethingElse

@:Cinnamon Girl: a) I like Neil Young! b) yes. Let's all not be cool, shall we? And you too, @whizz_dumb. Maybe she's not cool either! Wouldn't that be great?

I utterly failed at keeping it cool with this girl I'm in love with right now, and it turned out she wasn't cool either, and now we're utterly uncool together. It is very nice. Although if you saw some of the texts we send each other you would barf up your nose.

alphabiddycity

@whizz_dumb Am I ever so glad you live in California. I just had a tiny mini panic attack! I would be shocked—SHOCKED I say—if he ever visited this site.

whizz_dumb

@:Cinnamon Girl: Oh I still keep it reeeal genuine and goofy, let me tell you I'm not afraid of awkward. And I agree, nobody should stifle their own personality. I guess "playing cool" can mean a lot of things. There are real legitimate reasons in this case for me to back off a little with the "LET'S HANG OUT ALL THE TIME THIS IS WONDERFUL" stance. She's going through a rough patch (I'd feel weird divulging too much) and I am there for her but if I push the romantic relationship stuff too hard right now I'm sure it will backfire.

whizz_dumb

@alphabiddycity haha why would it be so shocking, wait, is his name Rush? In that case you should play it ice cold and shut it down completely. Sorry I can't help it, but really, we do know that it works both ways and we risk a defensive stalemate in this crazy game of love. I'm gonna shoot for voicing some straight talk from the heart on Sunday and be all "there it is, that's where I'm at".

KellyStitzel

I just started comedy writing classes at Second City and I have my second class tomorrow. So excited! Also, just started doing stand-up and have a gig Monday night that I'm equally excited for. If I could find a job, everything would be perfect.

olivebee

@KellyStitzel Yay! I love the Chicago comedy scene (unless you are at Second City in one of their other cities). I used to intern at Second City. Congrats on your gig!

KellyStitzel

@olivebee I'm at the Chicago center. And I'm actually commuting up there from Cincinnati every weekend until I can get a job and an apartment there. It's totally worth it.

oh, disaster

@KellyStitzel Good luck! That sounds excellent.

PistolPackinMama

@KellyStitzel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Decca

So, after a while of hemming and hawing, I've finally decided where to do my Masters and you guys, in September I'm moving to Brighton! Any 'Pinners in the area say hey!

phlox

@Decca Congratulations! (Does that make this the grad school thread? Because I got in this week!)

boyofdestiny

@phlox Yeah, I just got into a couple grad schools. Not that anyone cares. And this Brighton, is this Brighton MA? Or one of any of a number better Brightons out there?

Decca

@boyofdestiny Nope, it is Brighton, UK. But I have lived in Brighton MA!

And yaaay @phlox!

Cat named Virtute

@phlox Congratulations everyone!

EpWs

@all of you SO MANY CONGRATS! I'm so excited for all of you!

More battenburg, vicar?

@Decca Congrats! Am in Bournemouth, and studying at Southampton. So that's not Brighton then. Southampton is more the gobby nephew of Brighton who's a bit scary when he's had a drink.

Decca

@More battenburg, vicar? Cool! My knowledge of the UK and its geography is really rubbish. I've only been to London, Oxford and Edinburgh (and will be in Canterbury verrry briefly in April) so I'm very excited / nervous about moving over. As it happens, three of my current lecturers at university studied at University of Sussex, and each of them have sang Brighton's praises to me. It seems like a wonderful place!

More battenburg, vicar?

@Decca I've only been to Brighton a couple of times, but it seems like a really good place to be. What ya studying?

Decca

@More battenburg, vicar? Official title is Literature 1700-1900!

missupright

@Decca ME TOO. ME TOO ME TOO ME TOO. As an under-grad, but still, Brighton! English Lit! Sussex! Outstanding Natural Beauty! Pubs! The sea! Emerging/emerged poetry scene! People! Junk shops! The sea! Literature! Yay!

Decca

@missupright Ahhh brilliant!! Are you there now, do you mean? Would you be up for chatting to me about Brighton and the English department at Sussex? catherineosullivannuim AT gmail DOT com if you are!

Verity

@Decca Oh, yay! I live half an hour from Brighton, and I work there. Brighton is so lovely - I'll sure you'll like it. Congratulations on the MA!

Jaya

After work, I'm going to buy a pair of blue plaid pants because I have never felt hotter than I did when I had blue plaid pants in high school.

SarahP

@Jaya I miss all my plaid pants from high school!

remargaret

@Jaya Haha, I hope you are the Jaya I knew in high school. I made myself a pair of red plaid high school punk pants and felt like GWEN STEFANI. Might have bedazzled my bra straps. Yeah, plaid pants make one feel like a fox :)

Daisy Razor

I really, really want a beer. But instead I'm writing about endometrial cancer research. Sadness.

area@twitter

@Daisy Razor Thumbs-up not to the cancer, but the research. For science!

MerelyGoodExpectations

@Daisy Razor I'm sorry. I hope there will be beer in your future! Your post reminded me, though, that there is beer in my fridge, and it is 3:14 and I am working from home and no one would ever know...

Daisy Razor

@area@twitter It's pretty awesome research, actually. I just wish it was a little easier to cram an explanation of it into a 500 word article!

kadabra

Dear sexy 'pin ladies: I have only recently started seeing a man instead of ladies and am new to blowjobbing; I love it, but I get so dry-mouthed. ('Drier than the remainder biscuit after a voyage', he said; trying to make it better with Shakespeare.)
Have you hints? Should I buy edible lube? If so, which one?

Briony Fields

@kadabra BLOW JOB THREAD WOOOOO

I've never tried edible lube, but having a glass of water on hand helps. Or tea (not too hot) so you can play with temperatures on skin and whatnot. Also, if you know you are going to be blowjobbing, avoid cotton-mouth inducing activities beforehand, like drinking or smoking weed.

PistolPackinMama

@kadabra You are allowed to take breaks for drinks. Like of water or whatever.

Edible lube makes me want to cry, personally.

tortietabbie

@kadabra I have the opposite problem...I drool like a fool and then get really self-conscious about it. :/

Aubergines

@PistolPackinMama Seconded. Icecubes (again, slightly melted in your mouth) are also fun. And just stop for a drink, he'll enjoy the opportunity to look at your boobies. At least mine is constantly torn by blow-job vs seeing my Michaels. [Michael Bubles - we make up our own naught cockney rhyming slang.]

KeLynn

@kadabra Edible lube is so awful, IMO. Like, bad enough that I have stopped 10 seconds after starting a BJ to wash him off because I could not endure the taste any longer. I tried a few brands but they were all gross. I say a) glass of water b) you are allowed to take little breaks now and then! As long as you don't abandon him, I don't think your mouth has to be glued to him the whole time with no rest, either and c) Maybe do other sexy things for a while to get him raring to go, so the actual BJ time isn't as long because you're not starting cold.

noodge

@kadabra ummmm, well if I'm a little dry mouthed I usually just deep throat a few times (almost to the gag point), and for some reason it causes my throat/mouth to make nice slippery saliva. Boom. problem solved.

kadabra

@Aubergines Michael Bubles! I can't say how much I love this. Icecubes sound like fun. Although actually I rarely remember to make icecubes. I wonder if frozen broccoli works?

olivebee

@tortietabbie I drool, too, but my husband likes it....I guess it feels even more awesome that way? My drooling also depends on the angle, so...

@kadabra maybe try different angles? Gravity could pull more saliva out of you (that's what happens with me, at least).

kickupdust

@kadabra I can't take credit for this one (and don't really want to), but, er... gagging produces saliva? maybe just drink water, though.

kickupdust

@teenie ah comment almost-twins!

gobblegirl

@kadabra I find it helps to like my hand. It helps spread whatever spit you’ve got around, otherwise your hand just wipes if off and you have to moisten again, you know? It’s not particularly sexy, but so far no complaints ;)
Also, always use your hands.

MoonBat

@kadabra
I don't have a gag reflex, but deep throating def gathers some slicker spit ....and a pinch of salt on the back of the tongue calms a gag reflex if you DO happen to possess one (dental hygienist in a past life).

kadabra

@kickupdust Alas I eradicated my gag-reflex when I was a kid (by scrubbing my soft palate with a toothbrush daily) because I was training as an acrobat and did a little sword-swallowing. (which might now I think of it explain the velcro-mouth...) But breaks for water sounds perfect.

kickupdust

@MoonBat OH MY GOD, DOES IT REALLY? (possessor of a terribly annoying gag reflex)

MoonBat

@kickupdust
Yep! Just a good sized pinch on the very back of the tongue.

EpWs

@MoonBat FOR SERIOUS? Lifechanging.

LeafySeaDragon

@teenie this was what i was going to post, if you get it back far enough you drool like crazy.

MoonBat

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher
Please note that I said "calms", not "erases". No puking on the boys tonight and blaming me!

redheaded&crazy

@kadabra glass of water on bedstand!

also people should not feel self-conscious about drooling because that is what makes BJs delightful. drool is so key! and any dude who like, makes you feel self-conscious about drool? ugh, just gtfo. I would bite that dude's d- never mind

gobblegirl

@gobblegirl um, lick. Durrr.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Also, this definitely doesn't get rid of it altogether, but squeezing your thumb can lessen it. I have a super bad gag reflex and I have to use this trick just to clean my tongue while brushing my teeth.

@MoonBat Like how far back are we talking? Because I feel like I would start gagging just trying to get the salt back there? Also: salt stings if you have an open wound, right? So, like... what if it gets up under foreskin or a teensy bit in the opening of the urethra or whatever?

fuck fuck fuck

@Briony Fields okay since you deemed this BLOWJOB THREAD...

HOW DO YOU GIVE A BLOWJOB? i get it. i know what i am supposed to do. i have done it with huge success before my current boyfriend, who takes a lot longer than other guys i've been with, i guess. i've never had to do it for more than like 3 minutes straight! and i literally can't! my jaw just gets sooo tired and my mouth hurts and my neck hurts...i feel really bad because he likes it a lot but i can't get him to finish because i don't have the endurance. i just want to hear other people acknowledge this problem! which i understand may not happen because i'm so late to open thread :(

EpWs

@lighter fluid Take breaks! And use your hands! I am pretty sure there is no law that says you have to be 100% hands-free during a blowjob/sex/anytime you are not riding a unicycle.

oh, disaster

Today I'm leaving work early, eating a fish sandwich, doing some improv and then celebrating a friend's bday with bowling and karaoke. 4:30, you cannot come soon enough!

bangs
bangs

I've got lamb, I've got red wine, any suggestions on what else I can put in my stew?

becky@twitter

@bangs thyme, love and tenderness.

thebestjasmine

@bangs Some sort of root vegetables, parsnips would be delightful.

anachronistique

@bangs PO TAY TOES. I also love parsnips in stew.

RK Fire

Throw in some rosemary, carrots, and potatoes too! Maybe.. spinach? I like adding baby spinach to things.

pointy

@bangs I really like lentils with lamb. The French green kind. They wouldn't go in until half an hour it so before it's done cooking. Also, dried crimini mushrooms or a couple of anchovies add a lot of flavor.

bangs
bangs

@thebestjasmine I love parsnips! But I've never cooked them, do they cook like potatoes?

MilesofMountains

@bangs black olives are fantastic in lamb and wine stew.

atipofthehat

@thebestjasmine

PAAAARRRRRRRRSNIPS.

Not only tasty, but "fine words butter no parsnips" is a killing rejoinder you can use again and again.

gobblegirl

@bangs Onions! Leeks! shallots! Any type of onion, really (not at once, though, probably).

angelinha

@bangs Tears a la Like Water for Chocolate

More battenburg, vicar?

@bangs Onions, carrots and later on potatoes, a garlic clove, chopped thyme and a teaspoon of redcurrent jelly. I'm free this evening if you've got some to spare?

bangs
bangs

@More battenburg, vicar? Sadly, they gave me less lamb than I asked for at the grocery store (they probably misheard me, I'm a quiet talker). I think it's going to be one hell of a stew...

candybeans

@bangs parsnips cook like slightly tougher carrots, actually. You could probs leave them in a stew for a long-ass time without fear of them turning to mush.

becky@twitter

i look vaguely homeless today - and not in a bohemian, urban outfitters way. patterned socks with my ugliest pair of worn-out flats. i didn't have coffee this morning and i need to do a crazy amount of laundry tonight. i am out of clean socks and other necessary items.

anyone have non-heel shoe recommendations that are under $50? i is po and in need of a makeover from the ankle down. [no heels because cobblestones +commute +running around at work + bad knee +don't judge me, i'm a klutz]

gobblegirl

@becky@twitter No judgement on the flats - I wear flats all the time and me and my achilles heels are very happy, thank you. I tend to go quality over quantity, shoe-wise, so I don't have many discount tips, but I can't recommend Ecco flats highly enough. Sooooo comfy, so cute, so durable.

becky@twitter

@gobblegirl i will be spending the next hour or so at work on the ecco website. thank you!

bangs
bangs

@becky@twitter Not sure on the under $50 part, but I generally love Oxfords for practical office shoes.

Lily Rowan

@becky@twitter For under $50, I just recommend DSW. Almost all of my shoes come from there, including my walking flats.

Maria

@becky@twitter I wear nothing but flats anymore, but have a teribble habbit of buying them uber-cheap at Target and Old Navy in every color they make. They wear out in like a month, but I can't stop myself. Don't do that. Buy good shoes.

Ophelia

@becky@twitter If you can find them on sale, aerosoles are REALLY comfy, and have gotten cuter over the years.

Marquise de Morville

@becky@twitter How about Aerosoles? Not always the prettiest designs but very comfortable and not too pricy if you get them on sale.

@Maria Don't feel bad. I like the Old Navy flats too, and they lasted longer than some more expensive pairs. I thought I would do better spending a bit more bought Aldo leather flats and hoping to wear them rainy weather, but they stained my feet black. Apparently they were part cardboard.

just reading in a boat no big deal

@becky@twitter I third the Aerosoles suggestion. I, too, am a young person with a bad knee, and my Aerosoles sandals are way less painful than other, cushionless, shoes. I think I got them on sale for $20. They sell flats, too.

JustAPaperBag

@becky@twitter I just bought the same kind of Steve Madden flat in three colors from DSW, all $39.99. Kind of obsessed. For what it's worth, they're the Heaven flat, and they're so basic and perfect and comfy. I now have them in black patent, blush patent, and gold glitter (!!!). HIGHLY recommended.

gobblegirl

Any recommendations for a tasty, not-too-artificial stir fry sauce? Preferably something either really garlicky or really gingery or both.
I like making stir fries at home, but I have yet to make a really satisfactory homemade sauce, and it’s the most aggravating part (even worse than all the chopping).

MerelyGoodExpectations

@gobblegirl Stir-fry chez moi:
1) heat up your oil and cook, until about to brown, about a dozen cloves of garlic and a thumb-size piece of ginger, diced
2) add your veggies/meat/meat substitute (tempeh! put tempeh in everything!)
3) coat with a mixture of 2 Tbs water + 3 Tbs shoyu/soy sauce + 4 Tbs sugar (or half the amount if you're using agave or maple syrup)
4) enjoy!

cuminafterall

@gobblegirl Peanut sauce! My go-to recipe includes 1/2 c peanut butter, 1/3 c soy sauce, plus garlic, ginger, honey, rice vinegar, red pepper flakes and some hot water to thin it out a bit.

gobblegirl

@MerelyGoodExpectations regarding meat: I hardly ever put meat-meat in my stir frys because I always forget to thaw the chicken in time to cut it up...but EGG! I either throw the rice into the pan with the veg and crack an egg into it and stir a few times so it's low-fat fried rice, or cook it separately and put it on top (and break the yolk so it oozes over everything).

Marquise de Morville

@gobblegirl My absolute favorite is from the blog kayotickitchen.nl. Marinate your meat or vegetable of choice in: 3 Tbsp Apricot Jam, 2 Tbsp Honey, 1 Tsp Garlic Ginger Paste (or more since you said you like it!), 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce some Sriracha or other hot sauce. Fry the marinated things until the sauce has caramelized, so I am not sure how it tastes if you skip that step. I often use precut chicken if I am feeling lazy. I usually use chicken, spring onion and red peppers as veggies.

About stir-fry egg: My Chinese friend taught me to whip it with chopsticks and mix in pepper and salt and it makes it really fluffy.

MilesofMountains

@gobblegirl A little jar of black bean sauce is my go-to for stir fries. It's like this concentrated fermented black bean and garlic paste, so you just put a spoonful in and muck it around until it covers things.

Annabelle

@gobblegirl Trader Joe's has lots of yummy sauces that work for stir fry, if that's not too artificial for you. Their curry sauces and Thai peanut sauce are quite tasty!

EpWs

@gobblegirl I use a combo of chicken broth, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, a wee bit of sugar and plenty of ground ginger. Half of it goes to marinade (marinate?) my chicken, and the other half gets a little corn starch added too it and added at the end of the veggie cook time. I saute my garlic in oil before I put my veggies in to cook. It is the best!

MerelyGoodExpectations

@Marquise de Morville I love Kayotic Kitchen! Especially since both of my dutch grandmothers are hopeless at quantifying traditional recipes with anything more specific than "some" or "a little more".

Marquise de Morville

@MerelyGoodExpectations I like her recipes because the ingredients are very easy to get, and it helps that I like bell peppers. I think her recipes are the only ones I make frequently. Did you try the sweet potato/roasted pepper soup? Do you cook a lot of Dutch food?

MerelyGoodExpectations

@Marquise de Morville I haven't tried it, but it's on my list. I don't cook a lot of Dutch food (it not being one of the more, uh, robust ethnic foodways) but I crave hutspot and snert like mad when it gets cold out.

Elvis Costello's Spectacles

I am determined to go out tonight, as I've been thwarted by illness the last few times I've wanted to do so. Still ill, but I'm hoping it's the kind of ill that a few pints of stout can cure.

Lee Van Queef

So, I guess I should post this on the Google Groups page, BUT...

Does anyone who is in Austin want to have an occurring-during-SXSW-but-not-necessarily-a-SXSW-event Pinup? Is this suggestion soooo laaaame?

ayo nicole

@Woman Laughing Alone With Boas I like this idea!

elissa_what?

@Woman Laughing Alone With Boas I'm out of town (fleeing?) starting Wednesday but I would be down for something on Sunday or Monday!

@Woman Laughing Alone With Boas

I am free MWF but kind of mostly in the day because I do not live in Austin proper.

If not this week, then we should soon!!!!

Totally got a job offer doing exactly what I want to do...in Sydney. Cue constant flipping between exceptionally excited and horrified.

It's twice as much money!

But it's super-expensive and twice as much isn't a huge pile of cash!

But it's Australia, and think of the travel!

And the spiders and snakes and cone snails!

But it will be so great to spend all that time with my partner!

Who totally doesn't have a job yet (and oh so much student loan debt) and this all opens a giant bag of immigration-quickie courthouse marriage-eventual Catholic annulment process (for me, not her) proceeding worms!

You love plane travel and it's a LOT of flying to get there and back!

God forbid something happens that you might have to miss!

wee_ramekin

@Ti:Sapph I think the first part of your first sentence says the most ("...doing exactly what I want to do...").

Also, I'm taking from your posting that your partner is already in Sydney(?) ("It will be so great to spend all that time with my partner"), so do you need to worry about whether or not they have a job yet? I mean, if they're already living there, then they can just keep plugging away at finding a job, right?

Anyway...congratulations on the job offer!

Danzig!

@Ti:Sapph http://www.infinitelooper.com/?v=PLDGoEh7jqA&p=n#/143;154

Ti:Sapph

@wee_ramekin Thanks!

We're an hour apart in the East US and we have been doing the weekends together/weekdays separate thing for almost a year now while she finishes her second grad degree. Before that was 650 miles and an AirTran flight between us. This will at last get us in the same city, as long as the visa situation can get sorted quickly enough.

EpWs

@Ti:Sapph So many congratulations on the job offer! Australia sounds like an epic adventure. Please keep us updated!

Ti:Sapph

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Thanks! Australia will be an adventure, for certain. I know that it will always be the time that all of my good stories come from. And good stories and adventures are better than mortgages and retirement savings accounts, right?

EpWs

@Ti:Sapph Mortgages are a pile of nonsense. Go to Australia. Look out for snakes/tiny octopi that will kill you!

Stevie

Soooo boyfriend and I just moved into a pet-friendly apartment, and we want a dog but with his full-time work/part-time MBA schedule, I can't take on the full burden of care for a pup, and today we saw a BUNNY posted on Craigslist for adoption. An all-black little bunny. So now we might get the bunny, but is that a bad first pet? Anybody have advice? I had a cat when I was a kid, but that's the extent of my pet experience. I am fairly patient and good with other people's animals, though.

tortietabbie

@Stevie I've never had a bunny, but a friend of mine did and he was the sweetest little guy! There was even a bunny social hour where people with bunnies let them hop around a room together. Adorable. I want a bunny but I think my cat would object/eat it. Please post outrageous amounts of photos?

samafaye

@Stevie i had a couple bunnies growing up. most of them were standoffish at best, but one was Pure Evil. it lived to be 13 or so and then died on easter. on purpose. so...i guess i'm anti-bunny. but they are so cute! and you can't fault them for that.

Olivia2.0

@Stevie Oh god - go find some Amy Sederais on the internet - she has bunnies and like half her book is about them. I they they are a lot of work - you may be better off with a kitty?

charlesbois

@Stevie All of the pet bunnies I ever knew were kept outside in heated barns because they smell. They're so cute and cuddly, but their, um, excreta was really noxious. So I vote adopt a shelter kitty. Much more personality than a bunny.

Peekay

@Stevie I had so many bunnies growing up! They're swell. But we had a huge backyard, so they were outside. A friend's roommate had bunnies in an apt though and it was a bit smelly? Probably just bc she was one of those people that shouldn't be allowed to have pets and never cleaned the cage. But if you clean the cage regularly you're fine! And bunnies are great because they pick one spot in the cage to do their business, and they won't poo anywhere else. And they're cute to let out to hop around, and even if they poo it's just little balls that are easy to pick up, so no mess. We also had a bunny leash for walks, though I don't remember using it all that much. Is that weird? More or less weird than cat leashes? I don't know.

bangs
bangs

@Stevie I had a bunny growing up and it was a sweetheart and loved to be cuddled and ate all of our veggie scraps. We had it in an outdoor hutch though.

Stevie

@bangs So much to think about! Thanks all. I would be very clean to try and avoid the smell, and I'm reading about how to litter-train them, etc. We'll just see if fate, aka The Craigslist Lady, replies wants to give her to us. A cat is another good idea, I just thought a bunny seemed more interesting. Especially a goth bunny. But we shall see!

Stevie

@Stevie Erm, "replies and wants"

SuperGogo

@Stevie You've come to the right place! I am the owner/momma for two adorable house rabbits. They don't have a cage so they hop around the apartment freely and (I'm about to rock your world right here) they are litter trained!

Rabbits are great pets, but be prepared for the same amount of care/same lifespan as a cat. They're also a little more standoffish (they're prey animals--it's only natural), so if you want a pet you can cuddle and hold in your lap, you may want to consider a different creature. But they do show affection in their own, special ways.

ALSO, if it's an animal off Craigslist, chances are the rabbit isn't speyed/neutered, which can mean some bad hormonally-induced behavior, like aggression or spraying. Fixed bunnies are MUCH less likely to have behavior problems like this, plus it's actually better for them (90% of unfixed female bunnies die of uterine cancer).

Both my bunnies were adopted from an awesome shelter in Chicago called Red Door, so they were already fixed and litter trained. To find out lots, lots more about what it's like to have a rabbit and also where you can adopt from rabbit-knowledgable folks, visit www.rabbit.org.

dj pomegranate

@tortietabbie "There was even a bunny social hour where people with bunnies let them hop around a room together." This makes me so happy.

SuperGogo

@Stevie As this thread is demonstrating, there's LOTS of misinformation out there about rabbits and what it's like to have them as pets. No offense other commenters, but rabbits are NOT smelly, personality-less creatures! Rabbits are great, but they pretty much require a little research to understand what their needs are and whether they would make a good pet for you.

atipofthehat

@SuperGogo

Don't feed a rabbit avocado. It isn't on many lists, but it's deadly.

SuperGogo

@atipofthehat Woah, good to know. I have a bad habit of letting my rabbits sample bits of my "people food," but luckily I've never offered them avocado. I sincerely hope you didn't learn that fact by tragic experience.

atipofthehat

@SuperGogo

I did. A little avocado, along with the goodies from the farm share; our bun-bun loved it. But the next time she had it, she went into convulsions and died almost immediately.

Apparently it's quite toxic for them.

SuperGogo

@atipofthehat Oh no! I'm so sorry you lost her that way. :(

NeenerNeener

@SuperGogo The thing about rabbits is that you should definitely read a lot about them before getting one. They are very sensitive little critters and have a lot of feeding rules / allergies.
Also, second the spay/neuter recommendation, not just for behavior, but it greatly reduces their risk of cancer (I believe moreso for females, but also for males).
But! They absolutely have a personality, do learn words, can be litter trained, and show affection. And they are the cutest thing ever when they hop around really fast and do those goofy jumps.

NeenerNeener

I would also say that cats and bunnies require about the same amount of effort for care, which is not a whole heck of a lot.

raised amongst catalogs

I've been tending to a recovering-from-surgery boyfriend all week and haven't logged in/commented much since we came back from the hospital, but I want to thank everyone for giving me something to read, think about and laugh at during an otherwise very weird week. Also, I just made the black bread from 101cookbooks.com and it came out partially raw in the middle and I want to cry a little bit.

Bitterblue

@vanillawaif first off, hugs! Hope your boyf is feeling better!

secondly, kitchen disasters are THE WORST. I hate how they make you feel like the failingest failure that ever failed. I don't even know why, but I get disproportionately upset by them. All the "this raspberry cake is fine! We love it and it's delicious! We don't care that it was supposed to be raspberry cobbler!" in the world can't make me feel better.
But, that said, you can always cut the middles of the slices and make lots of eggies in a basket?

oh, disaster

@Bitterblue @vanillawaif I feel so stupid sometimes when kitchen disasters bring me down- I mean, they happen to everyone, life goes on- but I'll never get back the wasted time and ingredients (especially if they're fancy ingredients).

EpWs

@vanillawaif I had a kitchen disaster last weekend--made some cornbread for a potluck that would. not. bake. Completely raw in the middle even after an extra half hour in the oven. (This always happens when you're going to be serving it to other people, doesn't it?) Thankfully I had time to do another loaf and it came out perfectly. I don't even know.

How is your boyfriend doing?

raised amongst catalogs

@Bitterblue I always have a premature freak-out when I work with anything yeast-risen - something about the way the dough never looks/feels like it wants to come together properly sends me to a Very Bad Place. I can't tell you how many times I have stood in the kitchen, crimson-faced and wailing, with shaggy-dough-hands. I ended up cutting this loaf into four equal chunks, wrapping it in foil and warming it again for about twenty minutes (this after giving it an extra ten minutes beyond what it was supposed to take). I think it worked but I'll be having nightmares about it for days.
He is feeling better, every day, thank you!

raised amongst catalogs

@boyofdestiny AHHH! NO!

raised amongst catalogs

@andrea disaster It took SO MUCH PREP WORK, and then the two rises. So much invested in a loaf of faily-fail bread.

raised amongst catalogs

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher YES! See, I had said to myself that I'd take some of the bread to a few friends who have been so helpful and BAM, bread turned evil on me. If I hadn't had the idea to share, it would have been a total success.

He's doing so well! <3 u, wordie!

tortietabbie

We made it to Friday!!!! I thought it would never get here. And apparently it's daylight savings time again this Sunday? So we lose an hour of weekend? BULLSHIT I SAY.

meetapossum

@tortietabbie But it means summer is fast approaching! Day drinking in the sunlight! BBQs! Outdoor movies! Kickball! Happiness!

tortietabbie

@meetapossum But we didn't even get any snow! I didn't go sledding ONE TIME and now the hot sweaty months are coming up. Not pleased!

meetapossum

@tortietabbie Oh. I hate snow, so I've been quite pleased with the way this winter has turned out! And I love the sweaty months!

EpWs

@tortietabbie Guh, fuck Spring daylight savings time. Point of clarification, because I always forget: are we losing an hour Saturday night, or Sunday night?

sovereignann@twitter

@tortietabbie I was just going to say this! I call bullshit too because I live in Texas and life is unbearable in the summer months, especially last summer, and to know that the starter gun is getting ready to go off causes me no end of grief. I hate that we didn't even have one snowflake in DFW but everyone here is like, "Yay! Sunlight until 9:00!" while I'm like, "Oh good. Now it will make my body revolt even more to the thought of going to bed and my electric bill will skyrocket!" And those kids better stay off my lawn! grumble, grumble, grumble ;)

sovereignann@twitter

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher It happens at 2 a.m. Sunday so yes. I always think of it at Saturday night but it's actually Sunday morning. Either way why does it seem like a punishment? It's only an hour but it feels like so much more!

Mingus_Thurber

@sovereignann@twitter OH GOD YES. Have you seen the cartoon of Illinois and Michigan talking about how much they love summer? Texas walks into the frame, covered in flames, and says, "Fuck you guys."

EpWs

@sovereignann@twitter At least it's not Sunday night/Monday morning, which I always think is when it is. That would be terrible. ("You have to go to work in the morning AND the morning is going to arrive an hour sooner! Suckers!")

meetapossum

@Mingus_Thurber and sovereignann@twitter I was born and bred on the east coast, so I love a humid summer, but I went to Dallas last June for a wedding and I can empathize. It's hot as BALLS. But, honestly, I'd rather deal with a Texas summer heat and a mild winter than the temperate northeast, so can we trade?

tortietabbie

@sovereignann@twitter It would be different if we had a rough winter and it was really snowy and cold and I was looking forward to sunshine and warm weather. But it's been so sunny and warm here. It can't be spring's turn yet! Winter hasn't even happened!!!

sovereignann@twitter

@Mingus_Thurber NO! but YES!!! And there is no escape. you think there might be when everyone else is starting to oooohhh and aaahhhh over their autumn but nooo, not for you! You still have at least two months of balmy ahead.

sovereignann@twitter

@meetapossum Ah, yes June. The time of youthful adorable heat. It's when that unmedicated, burly, teenage heat of late July and August comes to town when you long for the days of June. But seriously, I have a friend in Washington who does weather statistics and I guess Texas didn't get below 80 for something like four months. We were waking up to tempretures already in the 90s some days. I think that if we were blasted all day but the evenings cooled down it would be fine but that's not what happens here. I will say though, I have lived in Houston and I'll take Dallas' 110 with 40% humidity over their 96 with 80% humidity any day. ANY DAY! I lived in New York for a while and enjoyed things like seasons and the idea of having to close down your pool because it got so cool in the evenings because it being in the 80s at Thanksgiving is fairly normal here. So, now that I've sold the hell out of it, still want to trade? ;)

sovereignann@twitter

@tortietabbie Exactly! I feel like I never really got away from my warm weather clothes because the cool didn't last that long. I think I wore gloves a total of six times, which makes me sad. I am not looking forward to the six months where you have to go from your car to your home to work to wherever only breathing recirculated air conditioner air. And if it's humid, forgettaboutit. I swell up like a Macy's parade balloon.

Roxanne Rholes

Ladies. Nuva Ring. Crazy maker? Because the first night I got this little bitch, I lost my damn mind. It's been three days and I may or may not be leveling out. Boo with hormones, but also boo with babies!

SarahP

@Roxanne Rholes I have no experience with this myself, but a friend stopped using it because it made her crazy, too. (And I think she tried it for ~3 months?)

thebestjasmine

@Roxanne Rholes Are you switching, or is this the first hormonal bc you've been on (or been on in a while)? Because oh MAN, my first month of bc was CRAZY TIME, but then it leveled off and got easy. And after a while on the pill I switched to Nuva Ring and looove it (so much so that I pay significantly more for it). But everyone is different, obviously.

becky@twitter

@Roxanne Rholes the NR cray cray leveled off after about two weeks. it's all the hormones.

ellochka

@Roxanne Rholes I had a touch of the crazy (flavor: extreme anxiety) the first two times I the tried Nuva Ring, so bad that I went off it after maybe a month each time (same thing happened with my one and only Pill experience), but now I've been on it for a solid 6 months and lovelovelove it.

Kinda seems like a crapshoot. My GYN said that if I could handle it, side effects usually wear off/become manageable within three months. But until this time around with my Nuva Ring, it was unbearable.

ayo nicole

@Roxanne Rholes I can never tell if my craziness is a result of my birth control? You may just have to ride it out. I am the #1 Nuva Ring stan, though, so I recommend sticking with it.

remargaret

@Roxanne Rholes CRAZYMAKER!! It crept up on me, I was fine at first, things only got weird maybe 6mos in. It gave me horrible nightmares! I attributed it to having BC named for a horror movie. One night I was so scared I couldn't even close my eyes. I had my 'scrip changed the next day.

Roxanne Rholes

@everyone, thanks so much all for all the input! After being on the Pill for ten years, I dropped it when I broke my leg last summer. I got an IUD and it was a nightmare, so out with that fucker, but I didn't want to go back on hormones...after a way-too-late period I decided the stress wasn't worth it and that NuvaRing would be a small enough dose but that first day...yikes! Crying on the bus, yelling at my boyfriend, awful! @thebestjasmine, I don't know if being off hormones for six months just reset my system?

LornaLoo

@remargaret I hated it, the boyfriend could FEEL it (and so could I at times), and my libido disappeared. Not worth it for me! But then again, I have yet to find any hormonal birth control that works for me.

thebestjasmine

@LornaLoo You can take it out for sexy times! It can come out for up to three hours without a problem.

parla

@Roxanne Rholes I was on the NR for 7 years! I'm only not using it now because it interacts with a new medication that I need more than I needed the birth control. First month is kind of rough, but if you can get used to it, you will probably love it. My periods got so light- they would come for 1 day, I would use pantyliners and that was it. I have had the same box of tampons for over a year. I just got my first period without the ring and it was terrible.

Inkling

I had it for two months last summer. It was during an emotional period, so I'm not for sure, but I feel like it greatly intensified my sadness for the sad thing that was happening? Also, my period is still extremely light (like 2 days of serious bleeding that erm.. trickles off) after almost a year later. It might have done something..?
Have you thought about an implant? I believe those have the lowest hormonal levels.

Tammy Pajamas

@Roxanne Rholes The Ring is the only form of birth control that has affected me in any way and it made me totally batshit crazy!!!

Tammy Pajamas

@Tammy Pajamas Mine made me think crazy thoughts--I believe it was a combination of depressing stuff and just paranoid (about the relationship I was in [which was in a totally good place]) stuff. But it was extremely surreal because I recognized those thoughts as being crazy and was hyper aware of not being in any control of my mind. Really creepy.
But I do have friends that love it.

bookbike

@Roxanne Rholes Is it crazy that hormonal BC makes me LESS crazy?? Everyone always talks about how BC makes them nuts, but I feel like it really levels me out...

Danzig!

Right so as some of you know, I went on a date on Monday, my ~first date ever~, at MoMA, with a pastry chef. She was really cool and had rad blue highlights and we talked and were ever-so-slightly unnerved by the Cindy Sherman collection. We viewed, then we ate, and then we walked around Midtown for a little bit talking about social justice and when we got to my school I did not feel justified in taking the liberty to attempt a hug / kiss. At time of recounting in last week's thread, I was p. disappointed in myself for mostly ineffable reasons.

But! Per @PistolPackinMama's suggestion I sent off a text today asking if she wants to get together again. I hope she does, even if it means more wrestling with the same questions and fears.

Anyway, I'm going to probably just shut myself in today and power through Mass Effect 3. Did you know that only half of your "war assets" are counted in the end if you don't play a lot of multiplayer / don't complete a rather awkward $7 iOS game? It's pretty bullshit.

wee_ramekin

@Danzig! That sounds like a GREAT date! Honestly! And just adding my unsolicited two cents: it sounds like she had fun on the date. I mean, there were so many times when she could have begged off and gone home if she wasn't having a good time (after the MoMA or after eating, for example), so the fact that you guys got to the walking-around-aimlessly-talking stage is a sign to me that she enjoyed spending time with you!

Seriously, I see no reason for you to be disappointed in yourself. And don't beat yourself up about not getting a kiss. Everyone has different expectations and preferences for when a first kiss should happen. (I personally don't like to kiss on the first date, por ejemplo.) If you weren't feeling that it was the right time, then it wasn't! That doesn't mean the date was a failure, by any means.

AndSomethingElse

@Danzig! Nice! Congrats on texting her! Keep us updated!

Also, high five for her being a pastry chef. That's pretty cool.

Lucienne

@wee_ramekin I second this! If she hadn't enjoyed herself, she'd have found a way to get out earlier.

atipofthehat

@Danzig!

Great god man get out while you can these ladies will eat you alive!

Cat named Virtute

@Danzig! Congrats! Definitely sounds like it went well. I know it's easier said than done, but sometimes, if you're unsure, just asking someone how they feel/what they'd like is a solid approach, if you're not too intense about it. People appreciate having their feelings taken into consideration!

Biketastrophy

@Danzig! Sounds like an awesome date, and any awkwardness about no hug/kiss will probably be eliminated by the fact that you made contact afterwards showing you still were interested, just not touchy feely on the first date.

Also I would fault Mass Effect for the war assets thing, but multiplayer is SO MUCH FUN. I actually played part of the first and haven't played the rest, but bought the third and second solely based on the multiplayer demo.

Danzig!

@Biketastrophy The second and third are much, much more fun than the first!

TheBourneApproximation

@Danzig! Can't speak for the third (yet), but I'm always confused by people who say that ME2 was "so much worse" than ME1. I mean, seriously? When number 2 has Mordin Solus, no Mako, and renegade interrupts?

Biketastrophy

@Danzig! That was what I heard, and after playing 4 hours of the multiplayer on Sunday, I immediately preordered it and bought the second as well. I'm currently watching the story parts on youtube for the first one(someone conveniently clipped it out) and then I'm hopefully going to start 2's story this weekend.

Though I might just play 3's multiplayer all weekend, it really is super fun.

Danzig!

@TheBourneApproximation Yeah I don't get that either. The "planet sweeping" minigame is dull but so were the vast expanses of barren terrain in ME1.

@Biketastrophy What platform are you playing it on? PC? 360? Because the choices you make in one game transfer to the next, and in ME2 at least, if you just up and start a new game instead of "importing" a save it will proceed as though you made one set of choices (that is, all asshole all the time) that is not necessarily the one you would have made.

I do think, however, that there's an add-on (which you might have to pay for, I can't remember) that will allow you to go through all the big choices of ME1 and allow you to set them as you would for a new game of ME2. That's probably your best option if you want to skip the first game. If you're on PC then you can google "Mass Effect 1 saves" and download / import endgame saves, classified by choice sets, that other people have uploaded (these will still let you choose appearance and class as well as give you a whole lot of starting bonuses, but they are locked by sex).

PistolPackinMama

@Danzig! Yay! I love when people take my advice. I like it even better when the advice works, which I suppose remains to be seen.

han
han

@Biketastrophy Multiplayer is SO much fun! I'm stupidly excited about playing as aliens (esp. Krogans, let's be real).

Danzig!

@Danzig! So I sent her that follow-up text and she hasn't replied so I'm taking the hint. It's too bad, I'm sure she was the only interesting single woman in the whole of New York City.*

Also I beat Mass Effect 3! That ending really brought out the Greybeard in me (not as in Greybeard the old nord dude from Skyrim, but as in Greybeard the gamer dude who gets irrationally angry at things). It was entirely preposterous!

* I am not actually sure of this

PistolPackinMama

@Danzig! That non-text is all good information. Onwards!

AndSomethingElse

@PistolPackinMama Ah well. Fist bump to you for sending the text. Onwards indeed, bud.

speaking of hair. multi-tasking gone way, way wrong: i just called a hair salon, got flustered because i was doing ten other things at once (incl. the 'pin) and asked to schedule a "cut and blow job" rather than a "cut and blow dry." and that's not even the most embarrassing thing i did today.

My husband is going to be out of town all weekend and my closest friends are all busy. I need suggestions on what to do to occupy myself for 32 hours of being alone! (Well, I am going to spend one day volunteering at an animal shelter like I do every weekend, so I guess it's more like 28 hours).

AndSomethingElse

@olivebee Get drunk and look up exes on Facebook?

Jaya

@olivebee I actually really love going to bars and reading. Like, order myself a drink and sit at the bar and spend a long time with a good book. Just nice to have a change of pace from sitting at home and reading and drinking, which I also do a lot.

thebestjasmine

@olivebee Do all of the stuff that your husband hates. Like, make food that he doesn't like, take yourself out to a restaurant and sit at the bar, read a really good book for hours and hours.

becky@twitter

@olivebee make a pinterest account of DIY projects you want to do.

becky@twitter

also, make and drink these: http://sutterhome.com/blog/2012/03/sutter-home-wine-cocktail-girls-night-in/

olivebee

@everyone who has and who will answer: thanks for the suggestions! I just received the first disc of season 1 of Justified on Netflix, but that will only take up 3 hours or so, so I am really grateful for your suggestions. I like the idea of reading at a bar...it'll make me feel mysterious!

AndSomethingElse

@Jaya I love this! But I don't have the balls to just do it, because I'm afraid people I don't know will judge me. Like, "Oh hey check out the nerdy, lonely alcoholic." So what I do is try to arrive like 45 minutes early any time I'm meeting someone at a bar. That way it's not like I went to a bar just to read...I'm just overprompt.

Sitting at home and reading and drinking: yes. It has to be a difficult book, though. Easy books don't hold my attention well enough. Last time I did that it was The Waste Land.

I'm a little bit lame.

rudedog@twitter

@Alexander the best way to get over this fear of judgment is to stop giving a shit about what other people think about you. The easiest way to stop giving a shit is by realizing that they're all pretty much self absorbed and not thinking about you at all.

AndSomethingElse

@rudedog@twitter This is good advice! I wish I was more able to do it. I guess I should practice.

ohnoohno

@all Reading alone in a bar is my favorite way to pass time. Even better if someone booky wants to have a fun conversation about books. (This rarely happens).

AndSomethingElse

@carrieohno Why doesn't anyone ever want to have a fun conversation about books????

Actually, just yesterday I had a very nice conversation about Kafka on the subway. It was my second ever.

So, what're you reading? I'm about to start Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. I'm doing a dystopia theme! I just read We by Eugene Zamyatin, which is great by the way, and next I'll do 1984.

candybeans

@carrieohno ooh! I'm going to have a chance to do this (read at a bar this very evening, since i'm meeting some friends at work, but they get off work later than I do! Yay for reading alone at bars! i could also do my cross stitch, but i have a feeling that would draw a bit too much attention.

ohnoohno

@Alexander I just finished Baby Geisha by Trinie Dalton (druggy, sunny, secretly sharp California stories), started The Accidental by Monica Ali and about to dip into We Have ALways Lived in the Castle By Shirley Jackson & The Ask by Sam Lipshytz. I think those three will make a good airplane book combo.

As for fun conversation I just wanna talk about characters like they are real, FEELINGS and how the book fits into the author's catalogue. Fun.

AndSomethingElse

@carrieohno Ooh, We Have Always Lived. That's on my list. Looking forward to it.

sovereignann@twitter

@Alexander @Alexander Oh! Brave New World is so amazing and well, 1984, what can I say? Both books take me back to my senior year of high school where my English teacher was dying of cancer so she said F.U. to the school board and we read all the banned books that year so Brave New World, 1984, Les Miserables, Lord of the Flies, and all kinds of others. Everyone else was struggling with Boewulf and we were all like, "Old English? What does it matter? Maybe you can tell that story orally as we will all be working at the Ministry of Truth while our babies are 'decanted'."

@sovereignann@twitter Ah ha, your English teacher was balls.

Seriously, if you're a fan of those books check out We. 1921, hugely influential on both authors (and also on some crazy lady named Ayn Rand, btw). Never published in Russia during Zamyatin's lifetime (censored). You'll see the influence immediately, and besides it's just a wonderful book. The translation I've linked to is the correct one.

I've read Brave New World and 1984 before, but not for ages. Started BNW on the bus today. More sex than I remembered!

sovereignann@twitter

@Alexander Oh Thank You! Something to read this weekend. And yes, she was the balls. I moved my senior year and knew nothing about her but was very, very glad I got to have her as a teacher. I probably learned more and read more school assigned books that year than ever before. I haven't read either of those books in a while but 1984 is something I can always pick up and read.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@becky@twitter Or really, just get on pinterest. There goes your weekend! (Seriously though, I feel like pinterest is sort of my job now? My unpaid job?)

wallsdonotfall

Springtime is giving me Romantic Feelings all over the place. All I want to do is bake homemade pop tarts (with apricot and cream cheese filling?) and present them to a brilliant woman in a Meaningful Manner. Is that so much to ask? She can wear my sweater! I am more or less made entirely of sweaters layered over one another!

Cat named Virtute

@wallsdonotfall Meeeeeee toooooo. And the girl that I like lives 2000 kms away. It is VERY INCONVENIENT. I just want to go for waaaaalks and hold haaaaands and have someone to direct all my giddy spring lust towards.

Marzipan

@wallsdonotfall That reminds me very strongly of a book from my childhood that I enjoyed/was slightly unnerved by but I can't think of ANYTHING ELSE. Just, Sweaters upon sweaters? And there was nothing actually underneath them?

OH I GOT IT!!!! It's Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Thanks everyone for participating in this round of 'Marzipan Thinks Out Loud'.

Anyways, that sounds amazing and I only wish I was brilliant!

EpWs

@Marzipan YES. The dead rat. Louis Sachar is awesome.
@wallsdonotfall This sounds like a good plan. Step 1: Pop Tarts. Step 2: Sweaters. Step 3: Snuggles. It sounds like it would work! (Yo, @S. Elizabeth, back me up!)

wallsdonotfall

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher But do I just wander the streets handing out pastries like they're glass slippers until I find the The One? Who, I suppose, would have to carry her own poison test kit to use on the pop tart, because I admire a healthy sense of self-preservation.

EpWs

@wallsdonotfall Yes.

candybeans

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Where *IS* S.Elizabeth? We were promised Stories.

Decca

@candybeans Yes, where are you S.Elizabeth? I want to hear The Tale of The Ladyfriend from the beginning!

mascarasnake

@Marzipan Those books! Potato tattoos for everyone.

lora.bee

@Marzipan You just made my day!! Sideways Stories from Wayside School! Ah I wish I had it to re-read.

EpWs

@candybeans She is probably off snuggling with her Lady Friend, being adorable. Those buttheads.

EpWs

@Decca @candybeans As per her post downthread, she is on the couch snuggling with a casserole. Or some such adorableness.

@candybeans ummmm uhhhhh I got held up by the ladyfriend. I was originally going over for a few hours before yoga, and instead we had date night followed by cuddling and snuggly goodness and breakfast. :)

anachronistique

Ugh, I just remembered I have to go to Whole Foods after work for cheese. But it's to bring to the Fangirl Party I'm going to tomorrow, so it evens out!

Speaking of: what are your favorite cheeses?

SarahP

@anachronistique I've been happily vegan for 7+ years, but there is a still part of me that dies a tiny quiet death every time I hear the word "Gruyere." I freaking loved that stuff.

AndSomethingElse

@anachronistique Huntsman. I love huntsman cheese. Also, I love all of the other cheese.

Fangirl Party? I don't know what that is but it sounds awesome.

anachronistique

@Alexander The way our fangirl parties work is, everybody brings DVDs of shows and we write show and episode titles on slips of paper and throw them in a hat and then randomly pick them. There's a one episode per show limit so we don't end up watching Supernatural or Doctor Who for six hours in a row. And there's a lot of booze and food. It's good times.

@SarahP GRUYEEEEEERE. So delicious. So worth getting in a fistfight at the cheese counter for.

SarahP

@anachronistique Your fangirl parties sound adorable.

meetapossum

@anachronistique Gouda forever! I put applewood smoked Gouda in my mac & cheese this week and it was amazing.

madge

@anachronistique HUMBOLDT FOG. it's like blue cheese and brie had a stinky, runny, delicious baby. <3

Bitterblue

@anachronistique omg those parties sound AWESOME. I need friends so I can have parties like that.
Also, smoked gouda. Or goat cheese. Or brie but I can't eat the rind, blegh.

PistolPackinMama

@anachronistique All of it. ALL THE CHEESE.

Not even kidding. If someone gets lucky enough to marry me, we are having a cheese cake. As in, fancy stack of cheese.

OhMyGoshYouGuys

@anachronistique Manchego and Haloumi!!!

wee_ramekin

@PistolPackinMama Will you marry me?

Faintly Macabre

@anachronistique Do you like more nutty cheese or creamy cheese? I LOVE comte. Morbier is also awesome and has ashes in it. They're both pretty inoffensive (not very smelly or moldy or spicy, not that those are bad!) but more interesting than brie or stilton or whatever.

EpWs

@anachronistique The sharpest cheddar you can dig up. Now I want some cheeeeeeese.

anachronistique

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I am now STARVING. And this cheese is for tomorrow! For other people! I sense a flaw in my plan.

PistolPackinMama

@wee_ramekin Yes!

Can we go to Istanbul on our honeymoon? Once we emerge from our cheese-comas?

phlox

@meetapossum Aged gouda is one of my favourites - it is delicious like gouda but with a bit of the saltiness that makes parmesan so good. And St. Andre, but only if you live in Quebec where they make a delicious unpasteurized St. Andre that stupid Canadian dairy laws won't let them sell in other provinces :( It is like butter that looks like brie. Oh, and there is a cheese called something like la sauvagine that gets nice and runny if you leave it out at room temperature and changes to taste even better with every different wine you taste. (Hi I like cheese!)

PistolPackinMama

@wee_ramekin hey! That's nobody's business but the Turks'!

anachronistique

@wee_ramekin Even old New York was once New Amsterdam!

AndSomethingElse

@anachronistique Why they changed it, I can't say.

wee_ramekin

People just liked it better that way, I think.

Xanthophyllippa

@anachronistique Haloumi!

angryjones

@phlox Oh my god St. Andre! I love it so much, and you're telling me there's a better version in Quebec?! Curse my Texas-dwelling self. Oh and I second the Humboldt Fog recommendation, that stuff is so good, especially with a generous pour of red wine alongside.

lora.bee

@all Does anyone know the other stuff by They Might Be Giants? Like Doctor Worm? That would just make me so happy.
So if you've a date in Constantinople, she'll be waiting in Istanbul!

Bitterblue

@lora.bee This is my last stick of gum -- I'm going to cut it up so everybody else gets some -- except for Ashurbanipal, who says my haircut makes me look like a Mohenjo-daroan.

anachronistique

@lora.bee She's actual size, but she seems much bigger to me!

Also, I got some Port Salud, brie, and smoked gouda. Because I have no idea if the crowd is cheeseventurous or not.

AndSomethingElse

@anachronistique throwing another fuck yeah to gouda. And brie, too! I know it seems a little obvious to some people, but fuck it: brie is great.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

I know it was already said, and this is no longer relevant as the night is over, but MANCHEGO. MANCHEGO ALWAYS EVERYWHERE. Also, really good parmesans. And baked brie, either of the wrapped-in-pastry-and-warmed or melted-with-berry-compote on top varieties. Oh god, CHEESE, YOU GUYS.

Cat named Virtute

To everyone who read/commented on my grad school burnout woes in last week's open thread--thank you all so so much for your nice words and support. I met with the nice prof, who, conveniently, is also our acting director for the program this semester (which I had forgotten), and she was SO good and supportive and made sure I knew that if anyone gave me crap I could tell her. I'm going to drop two or three of my classes and take some time off. I'm still feeling really overwhelmed by details and the need to figure out my loans/look for a job/tell my parents/fill out withdrawal paperwork (and its opposition to the urge to just stay in bed until two watching old episodes of Community every day), but I'm getting there. I didn't cry yesterday! And I went to a pin-up with strangers!

Also in the spirit of improving mental health and eventually getting out of bed, I have been observing LAMOB with only one slip.

anachronistique

@Marika Pea@twitter That is awesome to hear, and I'm glad that you have a plan. Good luck with sorting everything out! It's a lot of stuff to work on, but everything can be broken down into steps and you can take them one at a time.

Danzig!

@Marika Pea@twitter I set myself a limit of 3 classes a semester and I'm pretty strained this semester with only 2 (plus a pass/fail stats course that I just don't care about). I figure if I have to stay in school for an extra semester or two for my sanity, whatevs.

PistolPackinMama

For the first time in the history of Time, I don't want to leave work today. Because, GUYS, my internet is broken at home. And they can't fix it until TUESDAY.

I am internet dependent. It's pretty sad.

AndSomethingElse

@ellochka OMFG WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO???!?!??!??!!1

No, seriously. I was internet-less for like 48 hours once and it nearly killed me.

Biketastrophy

@ellochka Do they sell pay per minute datacards for wireless? Or maybe try out a datacard from your cellphone provider and then return it on Tuesday? Not sure if that works, do not try without lots of research.

MilesofMountains

@ellochka when I moved to my current place, it took them an entire month to get the internet working at my house! I would sneak into work on weekends to internet. On the other hand, my house has never been so clean!

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@ellochka Aw, I really hope you found a cafe with free wifi to hang out at all weekend. I mean, yes, objectively, media fasts can be good for you. But...

ImASadGiraffe

@ellochka I have no internet right now (other than my smartphone tethering) and it's terrible. On Friday I had to work so I had to go to Starbucks for the free wi-fi to avoid going into the office.

AndSomethingElse

Can I ask y'all something? What do you do on weeknights?

I canceled cable, so now I have free time to do awesome things! But...sometimes I don't feel like doing any of the awesome things.

@serenityfound

@Alexander Knitting! Knitting and Netflix. (...or cooking)

SarahP

@Alexander Here is what I do on weeknights: Internet, volunteering, getting drinks/coffee with friends, movies, reading, trying new and exciting recipes, going on walks, exercising, playing guitar, sewing, playing video games, calling people I am supposed to call but haven't in months because I'm terrible at that.

Gertrude

@Alexander something arty, but easy (I just bought a new coloring book!) while sampling new music (via Pandora or one of Jane's mixtape posts). it's just the right level of mindless.

Cat named Virtute

@Alexander Watch tv on my laptop in bed, board game nights with friends, cook/bake, read in the bathtub with a glass of wine, shoot pool at the dive bar on my corner, stuff like that. Not homework apparently!

bangs
bangs

@Alexander Gym, learning Spanish, reading.

KeLynn

@Alexander Mostly cooking and watching Netflix. Reading. Go to the gym or yoga or take a walk. Internetting a little. Ummmm.....that's it? Even when people invite me out on weeknights, I usually don't go. I just like going home after work.

oh, disaster

@Alexander I take an improv class one night a week, and then usually get drinks with friends, go to readings, write, read or watch something on Netflix the other nights.

ayo nicole

@Alexander Are there pool or bowling leagues where you are? Those are really fun. Knitting, Netflix, drinks with friends (quiet, not rowdy if we can help it), shopping, dance class, concerts, and almost always cooking. I also enjoy doing absolutely nothing.

More battenburg, vicar?

@Alexander Read books, cook nice things, drink wine, tickle the dog, tickle the husband, read Sherlock fanfics, feel a bit guilty about the fact that I'm quite happy not seeing my friends - I like knowing they're out there somewhere, but it's so cosy at home in my jim jams, not having to go anywhere or be sociable . . . .

wallsdonotfall

@Alexander Learn a new instrument. Weeknight evenings are practice time! Or if you don't already know Javascript, start doing CodeYear.com.

MilesofMountains

@Alexander I'm really boring. I knit, I read, I watch shows on my computer, I go to the gym, I internet. I cook fancy meals or bake and if I have lots of time and am actually not lazy that evening, I try and organize things so that I have my lunch and snacks for the next day and things prepped for the next day's dinner because when I get home I'm always all "Food. NOW!"

DianaPrince

@Alexander Pub trivia! And cooking.

Dancercise

@Alexander
Jigsaw puzzles or logic puzzles with Netflix or Pandora on are my new favorite thing. I also dance 3-4 nights a week.

SuperGogo

@Alexander I don't have cable, but I do watch TV via a digital converter box and rabbit ear antennae. Depending on where you live, you can still get a handful of stations. I get all the major networks and (most importantly) PBS. Honestly, the PBS programming is so good that I rarely need any other station.

oh, disaster

@xx-xx-xx Aww, I haven't been to a good trivia night in a while.

moose

@Alexander I think it's okay to not do things sometimes. I have only recently started doing things on weeknights, even if it's just going to a friend's place for dinner. But most of the time I just wanna smoke weed with my man and watch random crap on the internet and craft and draw and talk about the world and cook things that are supposed to take half an hour but ALWAYS take all night. Working is tiring and so is commuting.

VolcanoMouse

@Alexander Sew clothing while listening to internet radio! Make stupidly elaborate crap for dinner! Go on walks while it's nice and cool outside! Read fiction!

But then, I am very much about Doing Stuff with my spare time. It only recently occurred to me that I am allowed to slow the heck down and poke around on the internet or sit on the porch doing nothing when work is done. 'Rest' isn't the same thing as 'idleness,' right?

AndSomethingElse

@VolcanoMouse Yeah, this is my problem. I'm not very good at...just hanging out. If I haven't accomplished anything for a whole evening I get pretty twitchy about it. I don't think it's healthy! I mean, it's great to do stuff, but it is also great to sometimes not do stuff, as @moose points out.

What I do: I do cook, sometimes fairly elaborately, even just for myself. It's fun! And I read a TON. I'm an obsessive reader. I have a spreadsheet of the books I'm going to read this year, nbd. I do some freelance work. Band practice one night a week. A LOT of screwing around on the internet. Annnnd sometimes I get baked and watch movies. But it's hard for me to relax and just chill unless I get stoned, and that is probably not good. That's what I need to work on.

Thanks all, this has been interesting! You people do a lot of very cool things. I am impressed by you. Yes, you. What I've learned: people do some really cool stuff, and also people sometimes just hang out. Which seems pretty obvious, but it's...maybe exactly what I needed to hear.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@Alexander I find doing household chores while singing along to music where no one can hear me, or catching up on the podcasts I missed for the week, to be a good balance of productivity and leisure.

I suspect this may not apply to you, but trying out new makeup/hairdos/outfits can take up a whole freaking day. I mean, the tights/skirt/shoes combos alone.

Also puzzles like sudoku and crosswords and word twist (and more!). And pinterest, obviously.

AndSomethingElse

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me (isn't she smarter than all of us?) I guess I could try makeup? :P

Three things:
#1 - The first (and tiny) Orange County (CA) Pin-Up happened on Wednesday and it was SO MUCH FUN. If you live in SoCal and want to come do karaoke, have traveling potluck/game nights, or go play in a warehouse full of trampolines, HIT ME UP.

#2 - I am buying a Lodge dutch oven. Thanks, Hairpin!

#3 - Tonight I am dragging a friend with me to see Silent House. I have never seen a legit scary movie (just suspense-y or action-y or The Woman in Black) in a theatre and am too big a weeny to go by myself. I anticipate that I will cry, but I am so excited!

@serenityfound

@tortietabbie Silent House: waaaaayyyy different than the previews would have you believe, at least after about halfway through. Slow to start, a few good scares (particularly a gimmick with a Polaroid camera), but not pants-wetting terrifying (which was what I expected). I kind of guessed the psychological place it ended up going, but not how it would play out. Elizabeth Olsen = amazeballs.

I finally got around to starting making tea cocktails from the tea cocktail talk I went to a few weeks ago. I managed to turn the gross plum brandy I bought on a whim and never drank into something drinkable with a hibiscus/berry tisane blend, and made AMAZING flavoured whiskey with a spiced orange black tea blend. Maybe I will make whiskey old fashioneds with it.

I want to try wine cocktails this weekend. And earl grey gin and tonics this summer.

MilesofMountains

@byrneunit The cocktail talk lady suggested it! She says she infuses gin with green tea earl grey (I'd use black tea because I don't like green) and mixes it in a gin and tonic. The gin is made by mixing:

2 c gin
2 tsp looseleaf earl grey

and letting it steep for 24 hours (and no more!) then you strain it and you have an earl grey flavoured gin to do all sorts of exciting things with (she gave out a martini recipe to use with it too).

@The Most Pernicious Woman NO but I am jealous and now making plans to do this next summer. TELL US WHAT YOU FIND.

H.E. Ladypants

Okay, I need fashion help- badly. I have a black-tie wedding to go to later this month. What do I show up in? I don't want to wear anything too long, because I think weddings are for dancing and stuff. I also don't want to look like I'm wearing a prom dress.

I'm a tallish, average-sized lady.

Also, I am pretty broke and do not have a ton of money to spend on a dress. IDEAZ?

charlesbois

@H.E. Ladypants eShakti has some things that might fit the bill. They aren't too expensive. How broke are we talking? This one is floor length, which I am more comfortable in for black tie, but they've got some cute cocktail dresses too.

http://www.eshakti.com/Product/CL0021916/Sequined-waist-georgette-crepe-gown

olivebee

@H.E. Ladypants I think it's all about the fabric. You can definitely get a dressy-looking short/cocktail dress for not a ton of money if you look out for dressier fabrics. Chiffon and satin-y fabrics are great. Also lace. Department stores will have their dresses from winter on sale now, too.

Olivia2.0

@H.E. Ladypants JCREW SALE.

EpWs

@H.E. Ladypants Am going to second everything everyone's said already and add ACCESSORIZE. Bling that shit out. Frost yourself.

Faintly Macabre

@olivebee I second department stores! If you are not incredibly picky, Macy's often has some nice dresses for ridiculously cheap on clearance. I got a $180 formal/cocktail dress there for $35, though it needed mending, and my sister got her lovely prom dress there for $15 way back when.

J. Crew sale is also good! But if you buy non-returnable stuff online, beware--some of their dresses do not fit at ALL how they look online.

H.E. Ladypants

@charlesbois Oooh, thank you! That is a neat dress and I really like the lines on it. As for budget, I was hoping to spend under $100.

@Lucienne Thank you! Sadly, my issue isn't that I'm not aware of etiquette, just more that I'm largely indifferent to fashion and now that I want to be pretty and appropriate I'm desperately in need of ideas. I am very bad at Being a Girl.

@olivebee Hmm. Good calls all around.

To clarify, I guess I don't mean a short dress, I was thinking like mid-calf? Just not ankle-length, I guess.

H.E. Ladypants

@Faintly Macabre Ooh. That sounds like my jam.

MoonBat

@H.E. Ladypants So sorry, but black tie means evening gowns. Long ones. You could maybe get away with just above the ankle if the skirt is narrow enough not to look cocktail-ish? Definitely go to consignment shops though!

Marquise de Morville

@H.E. Ladypants I like Olivebee's fabric suggestions.

Do you live close to a clothing outlet? If you are in NYC: I used to get all my formal wear (midi-length) from Filene's basement or Nordstrom Rack. Loehmann's is not bad either. Designer Outlets can be good, too.

dj pomegranate

@H.E. Ladypants For my last Formal Event I rented a dress for less than $100 off Rent the Runway. It was cocktail, though--I think they have full length, but I'm not sure. For the Formal Event before that, I got a cheap but lovely dress at a consignment shop ($50) and had it altered a bit ($20) Then I raided my mom's jewelry box and coat closet and also maybe her stocking drawer. <3 u Mom!

H.E. Ladypants

@MoonBat @MoonBat Okay, so intellectually I know this but I'm also confused! It just seems weird to me that everyone be in formal evening wear for a wedding.

Urg. And I keep trying to say this in a way that doesn't make me seem classless or gauche but I'm just having a very hard time combining the esthetics I think of for "black-tie" and "fancy wedding."

Marquise de Morville

@H.E. Ladypants I've been to a few formal tie weddings and most of the younger, female guests were in knee-length dresses, and usually only the bridal party and older family members were in full-length gowns. The odd ones out were in see-through long lace dresses or microminis. Does the invitation say black tie or black tie optional? I used the latter on my own invites, but more to tell people they can dress up as much as they like, not because I would have minded shorter skirt lenghts.

MoonBat

@H.E. Ladypants
Yeah, it seems *stiff* (that's what she said, haha!) for a wedding, and I'm thinking you have more flexibility, ie. more likelihood of people dressing less formally than for a frikkin GALA it whatever.

thebestjasmine

@H.E. Ladypants Yeah, I think that black tie wedding does NOT mean evening gowns or floor length. It mostly means that women wear fancy cocktail dresses and great shoes, and men wear tuxes.

I would go with a great little black dress, you could wear some awesome kicky shoes with it and blingey earrings. I might steer you away from tea-length, though, since it tends to look more dowdy than anything else. I have a great halter black dress that I've worn to a ton of weddings and it's perfect.

MailerMattDaemon

@H.E. Ladypants I recently discovered 6pm.com which allows some pretty quality things to enter into my relatively microscopic clothing budget. AND it has free shipping too!

Hello, Hairpin! This is only my second comment ever on the site though I read religiously, so I hope this request doesn't come off the wrong way.

If you can, please vote for my dog in the Upper Arlington Whole Foods' Facebook Cutest Pet Contest! My little dog Mayla (aka MayMay) needs a few votes to procure the crown and I'm not Internet-popular enough to properly campaign on her behalf. In 2008, she was picked up at an Arby's near the Kentucky/Tennessee border 20 pounds underweight and covered in ticks, and through thick and thin, has traveled the long road to this obscure beauty pageant.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Whole-Foods-Market-Upper-Arlington/81858238701?sk=info#!/media/set/?set=a.10150620579803702.395861.81858238701&type=3

I realize this is a total Toddlers & Tiaras thing to post on the Internet, but I'm going to share the link anyway. If you want to vote, click her picture and hit the like button -- she is the little hound dog in the first row, five down. Thanks, HPs!

@jj Done! Your pup is adorable and rescues are the best! What do you win if you win?

jj
jj

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Thank you! I think the prize is a gift basket? The funny thing is, I am not on FB, and my boo's mom actually entered her in the contest from a pic I'd texted her last year (this is not my local Whole Foods, either). Mayla started getting a bunch of likes and I'm now way overly excited at the idea of her being crowned a rags to riches beauty queen, if only via the local Facebook page of a corporate health food chain!

I'm leaving work early YAY! Can't wait to go home so I can drink and veg out on the 'pin all night. I have no life! (and no shame, apparently)

nogreeneggs

YOU GUYS! This has been the worst week, let me tell you. Starting last Thursday our bathroom has been being renovated and it is the ONLY bathroom in the house. And it took forever longer than it was supposed to, especially putting in the toilet. I truly started to think I would never have indoor plumbing again. BUT! It's finally done! I get to shower when I go home today!

nogreeneggs

@nogreeneggs The week isn't all bad though, Albany Pinup TONIGHT! :D

@nogreeneggs No wayyy, just days before I get back there! And drinks at the Standard are so tastyyyyy! have fun!

CONTROVERSIAL TALKING POINT

Americans, why don't you use sweetcorn as a pizza topping?

atipofthehat

@Decca

Because there's no way out of that maize.

wee_ramekin

@atipofthehat C'mon Tip. Stop being so corny.

dj pomegranate

@Decca Hominy reasons do you need?!

noodge

@atipofthehat I always just thought putting that on pizza was a little corny...

atipofthehat

@teenie

There's a kernel of truth to what you say.

atipofthehat

@dj pomegranate

Tell me. I'm all ears.

wee_ramekin

@atipofthehat Maybe if you'd stop stalking this thread, others would feel more comfortable talking to you.

atipofthehat

@wee_ramekin

You're so seductive, with your silky ways.

wallsdonotfall

@Decca Every time I have ever had pizza with sweetcorn, it also included a free topping of FRUIT FLIES. That's why.

(Which may be more a result of eating pizza from the U-Bahn kiosk than corn itself, but still. Tuna and corn is not a sandwich filling!)

tortietabbie

@Decca Sweet corn on everything, all the time, is my personal life philosophy.

atipofthehat

@wee_ramekin

Anyway, too much corn makes you husky.

wee_ramekin

@atipofthehat The tamalrity! You dare insult my husky curves while you're stalk-thin? Go crack corn. I don't care.

dj pomegranate

@atipofthehat Well firstly, I've found that eating too much of it makes me a bit huskier.

atipofthehat

@wee_ramekin

OMG I can see your niblets showing through!

angelinha

@dj pomegranate Cob-bon guys, let's all play bice.

(Ok that one's a stretch, but does anyone else remember the way Ann M. Martin and her ghostwriters would transcribe the Baby-Sitters Club's charges' speech when they had colds? "Bary-Add! I doh't feel good!")

anachronistique

@dj pomegranate There are polenta of reasons why not.

@teenie

Man, you guys are cereal punners.

Biketastrophy

@Decca I don't get this honestly since corn is in EVERYTHING ELSE EVER in america. Thought it does sound like an awful pizza topping.

First time I ever ran into corn as a pizza topping was in Hong Kong at Pizza Hut where they had the America Pizza and it had corn on top and thousand island dressing as sauce.

Since our chinese food is the way it is, I say well played China, well played.

atipofthehat

@atipofthehat

I read these and I grain.

dj pomegranate

@atipofthehat Yeah, there is a corn-ucopia of wonderful puns on this thread. They just pop into our heads!

wee_ramekin

@atipofthehat Really? Because I barley cracked a smile at any of them.*

*Not true. I'm an oat-trocious liar.

atipofthehat

@dj pomegranate

Tassel lotta punning.

PistolPackinMama

@Biketastrophy it is?

My feeling is, corn belongs:

1) in soft tortillas.

2) purchased from a farm stand at the height of sweetcorn season. Probably from a 16yo 4H kid. Rushed home, steamed/grilled IMMEDIATELY. Brushed with butter/lime/crema/chili powder, and eaten right then and there.

3) Fresh on the stove popcorn.

And in no other format. Because corn on pizza, in tuna, on a baked potato or anywhere else is unacceptable.

The only exception to this rule is: Indian Corn. Take: 1lb bacon. Fry the hell out of it, crumble it. Drain off some of the fat from the pan, but only some. Add 1 can creamed corn 1 can sweetcorn. Return bacon to pan. Eat with ribs/bison/boiled meat of some kind/steak and FRYBREAD.

Awwwww yeah.

Why do British/Irish people put sweetcorn in everything? Salad? Chili? Pizza? Tuna? It is as ubiquitous as baked beans and just as gross.

Decca

WHAT HAVE I DONE????

Biketastrophy

@PistolPackinMama High fructose corn syrup, its in everything ever.

Its not corn like you normally think of it, but its still corn.

Decca

@PistolPackinMama B-b-but sweet corn and tuna is the best sandwich filler? The best! I had no idea that sweetcorn on everything was peculiar to Ireland/UK until I was in the States and trying to order a pizza over the phone. The Dominos guy straight up laughed at me when I asked for sweetcorn.

PistolPackinMama

@Biketastrophy Well, yeah. But still. So is soy. It's not a food then. It is one of Michael Pollan's edible food-like substances.

But corn as corn? WHY? WHY ON PIZZA?

PistolPackinMama

@Decca It must be a culture thing. I seriously cannot stand it in any way but the above. And let's be honest, in Indian corn, it's really just a vehicle for the bacony bacon.

And when it is fresh in the height of corn season, it so, so, so very very good. I'll just eat it with a side of diced avocado/peppers/onion dressed with lime garlic and olive oil.

God, I want it to be summer right now.

anachronistique

@PistolPackinMama And why do they call it sweetcorn? I literally never heard that until I started talking to folks from the British Isles on the internet.

(I do, actually, like tuna and corn in rice as a quick dinner, but not on pizza.)

PistolPackinMama

@atipofthehat You guys, when will the cereal wordplay end? WHEN WILL IT END? The finely grained humor is getting to me.

wee_ramekin

@PistolPackinMama Quinoa ask you a question? Why would you want it to?!

Decca

@anachronistique Wait no. Ew. Tuna on a pizza is never okay. Just corn. Like, this evening I had pizza with: ham, jalapenos and corn.

SarahP

@anachronistique I think it's because until the late 1800s-1900s, "corn" was most often used in the British Isles the way we Americans now use "grain." So qualifiers ("barleycorn" and "sweetcorn") were needed to specify which you were talking about... and then it stuck?

SarahP

@SarahP *early 1900s

atipofthehat

@PistolPackinMama

I don't know, I'll have to millet over.

Marquise de Morville

@Biketastrophy Corn is indeed in everything. Did you know that Americans at this point are practically isotope labeled? Corn grows to fast it accumulates heavier carbon isotopes than other plants, and since a lot of food, especially fast foof, is cornbased. It ends up all the way up the food chain. Harmless but neat that it is traceable.

@PistolPackinMama Sweet corn is so much better in the US than in Europe. I used to have to cook it for 30 min before it was edible.

The best pizza topping are hot pickled peppers, e.g. 'pepperoni'. I was really disappointed that you get salami if you order pepperoni in the US.

sovereignann@twitter

@Marquise de Morville Yeah, peppercini is probably the best you can get. Of course I live in Texas so we have the option of jalapenos but they rarely come pickled although you can make or buy pickled (ot tamed) jalapenos which are sooooo yummy.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@Decca Corn with your TUNA? Corn on PIZZA? NO. WHY? NO! Corn, just be corn. You're beautiful just the way you are.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@all You guys, the puns ground to a halt. Don't flake out on us now, pop back in to the thread. Puns are our bread and butter!

Inkling

Sorry I'm not clever enough to pun, but my understanding of corn is it's more of a digestible cash crop than a food? Don't humans get roughly no nutrients from it?

OhMyGoshYouGuys

I'm so excited for tomorrow. Walking dog with BF and also having craft time with BF!

Atheist Watermelon

i am (possibly unhealthily) obsessed with David Mitchell (the British comedian, not the author) and have run out of Mitchell and Webb/ Peep Show/ QI/ Would I Lie To You etc. Help! Someone find me a replacement obsession! (Yes, I already went through all of Stephen Fry a year ago. Ha ha.)

Lucienne

@LittleBookofCalm Have you tried The IT Crowd?

Atheist Watermelon

@LittleBookofCalm Although, really don't need replacement obsession, as have big audition on Monday and tons of music I have to learn for various things thereafter. Everyone send me good vibes on Monday at 2:15!!!!

Atheist Watermelon

@Lucienne Yup... I'm afraid I've already exhausted all the great British comedies by now, unless there's something lurking that I'm unaware of...

gobblegirl

@LittleBookofCalm I assume you know about Soapbox?

Lucienne

@LittleBookofCalm Oh, then you should move to Canada! Slings and Arrows is THE GREATEST.

@serenityfound

@LittleBookofCalm I second The IT Crowd and add Green Wing (and Black Books. <3 u, Tamsin). Because Green Wing is absurdly amazing.

And all the good vibes! Thread-jack on Monday morning to remind us!

Atheist Watermelon

@gobblegirl @serenityfound Seen Green Wing (LOVE) and probably obviously seen Black Books (screen name ftw! How bizarrely droolworthily sexy is Dylan Moran, btw? Fwooargh.) But haven't seen Soapbox!!! Thanks, will check it out!! Yay! (Bye, productivity levels.)

More battenburg, vicar?

@LittleBookofCalm You're not the only one to fall for his dark-eyed, double-chinned charms! I also have a bit of a thing for Lee Mack, so Would I lie to you? is pretty much porn for me. Anyhoo, David - well, he is in some episodes of Jam and Jerusalem (acting, not a quiz show), and I guess you've found his Soapbox on youtube? If you like geeky Brit men, might want to try Brian Cox, the physicist - not sure if he's known outside of the UK?

Atheist Watermelon

@More battenburg, vicar? OHHHH THAT soapbox! oh, yeah, I've seen all of them. duh.

camanda

@LittleBookofCalm Good vibes!! I second a threadjacked update.

To everyone: if you are looking for a Britcom and are willing to go classic and have not seen it yet, my favorite favorite favorite Britcom is Yes (Prime) Minister. The premise sounds totally not funny (three middle-aged dudes in suits talking about government), but it is HILARIOUS. Unfortunately it is no longer on Netflix Instant and my YouTube source was cut down. It is available on DVD, though, and immensely worth the trouble. I paid out the nose at B&N to get them on my last birthday and have never regretted it.

"Government doesn't stop just because the whole country's been destroyed!"

@More battenburg, vicar? SECONDING THE BRIAN COX RECOMMENDATION. Yes, yes, he is known outside of the UK. I think both his Wonders series have aired on Discovery here. I have them on DVD. They are marvelous and he is pretty.

Atheist Watermelon

@More battenburg, vicar? Seen Brian Cox on QI and W.I.L.T.Y. but he doesn't do it for me like David Mitchell does... His RANTS.... aauuughhhh. Sometimes I feel like he reaches into my brain and says exactly what I'm thinking, except in a really brilliant, hilarious way. luuurve him.

@serenityfound

@LittleBookofCalm How 'bout a little old school, Good Neighbors?

camanda

@@serenityfound @LittleBookofCalm Yesss! I watched Good Neighbors (alias The Good Life) after watching Y(P)M because I adore Paul Eddington. It's hilarious. Sadly I find Margo totally insufferable for the entire first series, but she gets better after that.

I love having a weekly Britcom discussion in the open thread. More, please!

More battenburg, vicar?

@LittleBookofCalm Further to my Lee Mack interests, a sitcom called Not Going Out is definitely worth investigating. Tragic lack of David Mitchell in it though.

@serenityfound

@camanda Ahhhh! I never find anyone who has seen Good Neighbors/The Good Life. I love it so much (because/in spite of Margo).

How about, how about Are You Being Served? Not the greatest on the GLTBQ sensitivity scale and got dumb after a while, but SO GREAT.

camanda

Does anyone have thoughts on David's beard? Specifically negative thoughts? Because Tumblr tells me that I am the only one who hates it.

camanda

@@serenityfound It was ever so briefly on Netflix Instant for a while, which is how I saw it, and I miss it terribly. I'm going to have to break down and get the DVDs soon. SO FUNNY. And I love them all, including Margo, in her way. Especially drunk!Margo. The bits in the Christmas episode where they're all drunk and flirting with each other kill me. "Jerry, I'm a married woman." "Well, so am I."

I've never seen Are You Being Served? and am not totally sure I want to. Should I? It's on the local PBS fairly frequently.

@serenityfound

@camanda It's pretty dumb but it makes me snort-laugh a lot. There's a lot of "60s and 70s double-entendre" humor and physical humor. I say give it a shot! If you hate it, that's totally legitimate. If you don't, there are about a million episodes of it.

madge

@LittleBookofCalm also, an oldie but a goodie: father ted!

and what about limmy?

Atheist Watermelon

@camanda YESSSSS!!!! HATE THE BEARD!!!!! :-D Actually, I think it makes him look bizarrely like Thom Yorke, whose music I love and adore, but erm, does anyone actually want to LOOK like him...? David, shave your pretty face!

camanda

@LittleBookofCalm THANK YOU! And Thom Yorke just makes me think of Rob Brydon saying, "And he's in The Radioheads, you say?" in that one Big Fat Quiz.

@@serenityfound Fair enough. I shall see if I can catch it on TV sometime.

Faintly Macabre

@@serenityfound I went to Humphry Slocombe just because of that show. (Well, and ice cream, obviously. But I had other options!)

Atheist Watermelon

@camanda haha, yes- that clip of Thom Yorke reading out the question on that quiz nearly caused me to shit myself (a reaction similar to Noel Fielding's, if I remember correctly... haha)!

Also, if no one has discovered him yet, you MUST check out Tim Minchin's stuff- I know, he's Australian, not British, but his stuff is nothing short of absolutely brilliant (and he can actually really play the piano!!!)

Proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmfo-eL9VKc

camanda

@LittleBookofCalm LOVE Tim Minchin!

parallel-lines

I had a Dorito taco from Taco Bell for lunch and IT CHANGED MY WORLD!!!

Atheist Watermelon

@parallel-lines Dorito Taco...?!?!!?! Taco Bell? oh my god no. Why did you have to alert me to the existence of such a thing. THAT SOUNDS AMAZING (and horrible at the same time)

@serenityfound

@parallel-lines On the one hand, I am horrified by this like with Double Downs. On the other, we make taco salad with (baked) Doritos so this kind of sounds delicious.

parallel-lines

@LittleBookofCalm On one hand: it's so delicious!

On the other hand: I hate myself

On yet another hand: You can get it supreme style. And it is no joke super delish if you like doritos

On even more hands (I'm turning into Kali here): see second hand and just look away.

In summary: I want more.

Ophelia

Guys? My whole office has some sort of stomach flu, and I was there all this week. And now I can't tell if I'm making myself THINK I'm feeling weird, or if I'm actually feeling weird? Urgh.

angelinha

@Ophelia THE WORST!!! I do this too. It's probably just in your head though. I find that when I do actually get a stomach virus (ughhhh) it comes on very quickly and there's no time to think that you're feeling weird, it just happens.

EpWs

@Ophelia I do this constantly. Drink some orange juice and try and distract yourself?

thebestjasmine

@Ophelia Ginger ale! Go out and buy some of that super gingery stuff, and start drinking it immediately.

camanda

Friiiiiiidaaaaaaay!

Usually when I have a half-decent paycheck, I treat myself to a couple of MP3 album downloads courtesy of Amazon, which I did this week. And I bought Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins, which, don't ask me how I, as a tenor saxophone player myself, waited so long to get it. But it is MARVELOUS, and "St. Thomas" is one of my favorite standards, and it makes me feel like it's summer. See for yourself.

Ahh, I need something to do tonight. This is basically the only reason I think I should start dating. And then I think why bother when I can spend Friday at home with ice cream and foreign movies on Netflix? And then I remember it is because I am a spinster at 24 and should at least give myself a chance not to stay that way. It scares me! Ice cream and Kagemusha it is, then. :(

Lowetown

@camanda Oh geez. St. Thomas is SUCH a great tune. Absolutely beachy and wonderful!

Cat named Virtute

@camanda We are leading eerily similar lives.

camanda

@Lowetown It is! We played it in high school jazz band. My band director had great taste, aside from the time he told us we would play "Caravan" (as in Ellington, not Van Morrison; that would be hilare, though) and WE DIDN'T. We read through it like twice and then he changed his mind. BOO.

@Marika Pea@twitter Are we? Tell me more. I could use a life twin. Everyone is much more exciting than me.

Donovanesque

@camanda oh, I loove Saxophone Colossus.

Cat named Virtute

@camanda I am constantly torn between "go out and find people to date/befriend!" and "hide in bed with half a bottle of wine, some popcorn, and Sherlock foreverrrrr." The second one wins out a lot.

camanda

@Donovanesque Me too! Every minute of it! Again, why did I not buy it before? Idiot. I have something ridiculous like 130 jazz albums, so I think I'm just at the point where some totally obvious purchases become afterthoughts as I get obsessed with collecting the entire discography of particular artists (in my case, Bill Evans, and "obsessed" is putting it rather mildly).

@Marika Pea@twitter Yup, that is definitely how it is. I am generally okay with it since I cultivated it in college when I knew any social distractions would just put me, ace procrastinator and class-cutter extraordinaire, at a major disadvantage. The thing is, I've graduated, and can move on. But why???

Lowetown

@camanda I was in high school jazz band too, and we played lots of Ellington! Band nerds 4eva

camanda

@Lowetown High five! My senior year, I did three bands. Absolute biggest band geek, all the way into college. I play clarinet and tenor saxophone, how about you?

paddlepickle

So, what would you guys do if you got asked out by someone you don't find very attractive but may* have had a really great conversation with?

*I was very drunk and in retrospect "great conversation" may have been more like "me talking a lot". But it was enjoyable!

wee_ramekin

@paddlepickle Go out with them once and see what my sober impression of him was.

KeLynn

@wee_ramekin Agreed! There's no reason not to give anybody at least one date, unless there are other risks involved (like, it's a coworker).

paddlepickle

@wee_ramekin OK. Even if he was wearing a dumb hat?

Lily Rowan

@paddlepickle Oh, ESPECIALLY if he was wearing a dumb hat.

MrComment

@paddlepickle Meet for coffee or a quick day-date type thing. Keep it unromantic. Maybe, "I'm really busy these days, but we can hang out for a while in the waiting room of my gynecologist's office." Then when your name gets called, turn around and say, "Fingers crossed!"

Porn Peddler

@paddlepickle I have mixed feelings about the hat but GO OUT WITH HIM. He might turn out to be super cute up close or without beer goggles.

MilesofMountains

@paddlepickle Maybe it was only the hat that was unattractive? I think it's worth a shot.

Inkling

@paddlepickle
I am wary of stupid hats, except in the case of sentimental value or hair hangups. People wear hats very deliberately. That said, stupid hats can lead to hilarious hangouts, so please take a walk around the park with this fellow and report back.

Fodforever

Okay, so I just watched this video of Ratatouille, the snowboarding opossum, and I guess I'm having a lot of feelings about it. A lot of confused!feelings.

The sweater, is adorable.
I'm scared of his mouth!
I'm scared of his hands!
Despite the above I want to hug him.
He has a ski-slope ID! Or whatever that's called!
Isn't this... dangerous? Is it totally Peta-commenter of me to feel pretty upset on this opossum's behalf?
Also, why do I read it O-possum in my head every. time.?
Seeing the tail creeped me out too! It's an ROUS!

Okay, sorry, I just... I don't know you guys...

wee_ramekin

@Fodforever HOW DOES HE STOP?!?! I'm worried for him!

Fodforever

@wee_ramekin Right?! And you know he must have wiped-out at some point, causing his little opossum body to barrel-roll down the mountain!

parallel-lines

@Fodforever I am a snowboarder and I like his style.

@Fodforever Oh. My. God. This video. He is super cute. I am telling myself that the camera angles are hiding the fact that the slopes he's on are actually almost completely horizontal. And/or he may be pushed/pulled by someone a lot of the time.

But yeah, I'm also worried. Bright side, it looks like he's just standing on it with no clips or strings or anything, which means he could theoretically hop off if he stops liking it.

JessAndNo21

I would just like to know if, anywhere in the universe [Boston] there exists a gym that is not the shadiest business this side of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, charging me "cancellation" fees and "equipment fees" and "alternate days that end in -day" fees and will let me cancel my membership without selling my soul/first born/hair like Jo in Little Women and/or waiting for me to die so they can continue to charge my decomposing corpse's debit card.

I also may have just inhaled a little too much of a Sharpie King Size. Happy Friday!

angelinha

@JessAndNo I <3 the Planet Fitness in Porter. I haven't ever canceled but I've heard that it's very simple, 30-days notice.

I've also heard VERY good things about GymIt, the new gym in Brookline that is run by the same people as Healthworks, but for way cheaper (I think $20/month).

angelinha

@angelinha I should clarify that these "VERY good things" I've heard have been from Yelp and I don't know anyone that actually goes there. But I trust Yelp very much.

JessAndNo21

@angelinha Thank you! Both of those are doable options in terms of work-to-apartment locations. Vive la lifting weights like a dude bro!!

SarahP

@JessAndNo If you have $$$, I was at Healthworks for a while and had no issues at all. But I had a more-than-half-paid-for-by-my-work membership, so for all I know my work had to deal with that stuff?

Beacon Hill Sports Club also didn't charge me any fees, and I had signed on with a pretty good deal.

My mother in law just took a tour of VIM and told me how great they are for not having sneaky fees/requiring you to have a long-term membership, etc.

Marquise de Morville

@SarahP I signed up for VIM last month and am very happy with them so far (The location around Central Square). But I can also go during non-work hours and did not try to cancel with them yet, but it seemed much fairer than other things I looked into and they have unlimited classes.

SarahP

@Marquise de Morville The new Central Square location is the one my mother in law toured! She was really impressed with it, and said their classes are great.

Marquise de Morville

@SarahP I've only been to the older one closer to MIT, and have yet to try a class. It's good to hear that they are good.

angelinha

@JessAndNo If you don't have $$$, Healthworks does do open houses pretty regularly, and random free days (Groundhog Day, of all days, was open to non-members). A good way to supplement a $10/mo PF membership :)

slutberry

I had mostly a good week, but then I got a letter from the Government asking for tax documents from my dad, who died in August, and they're all "Whyyy are there discrepancies in income?" and it pisses me off. I mean, we did all the legal filing, and now I have to do more legal filing, and I am just fucking sick of that death certificate.

Cat named Virtute

@teffodee Ugh, that is the worst. I'm sorry. *hugs*

EpWs

@teffodee That is awful, I am so sorry. I would like to punch the Government for you.

@teffodee So sorry! I hope, once that shitty filing is over, that things look up!

Do you have thirty five minutes? Would you be interested in a ultra slowed down version of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights? Do say yes.

wee_ramekin

@Decca Ah! I've been listening to 'Cloudbursting' all day! It's storming here in Austin.

Decca

@wee_ramekin The video for Cloudbursting where she plays Donald Sutherland's ten year old son is odd, even by her standards.

Briony Fields

@Decca TERRIFYING!

Decca

@Briony Fields But also soothing, kinda?

wee_ramekin

@Decca Odder than her modern-dance 'Hounds of Love' video? Really? I feel like it's the most conventional of the videos I've seen!

KeLynn

I have very mixed feelings about the warmer weather. I love Spring. It is so fresh and clean and warm and full of life and baby bunnies and green leaves and daffodils. It makes me SO SO happy every single year. But the first week or two of spring also fills me with some weird, inexplicable anxiety every year. Like, I'm stressed out at how happy it makes me. WHAT is going on!

dj pomegranate

@KeLynn TWINS! I was just pondering this last night in fact! I tried to describe it to the bf, but he was baffled. It's like, extreme anticipation of wonderful spring/summer + equally extreme occasional waves of anxiety/stress about spring...? I don't get it. :-/

SarahP

@dj pomegranate You guys, I get this, too, but I never connected it with spring/summer until you said it just now. (I thought it was a coincidence? Gosh I can be dense about my brain's weirdnesses sometimes.)

KeLynn

@dj pomegranate! @SarahP! I don't think I've ever even told anybody this before because I have no idea how I would explain it. Isn't it so weird? I don't have anxiety about any other happy things in my life. Do you? The even weirder thing is that I HATE winter. HATE IT. But I never get anxiety over the colder weather. I mean, I dread winter, but I don't get stressed out in this way over it.

SarahP

@KeLynn I DEFINITELY get SAD in the winter (the acronym, not the mood), so I guess I thought it was somehow connected with my depression easing off or something? Anyway, yeah Spring Stressers!

ELECTROMAGNETIC CHAOS

@KeLynn: My Spring is so good, but I'm also worried about my Spring

celacia

@KeLynn Spring always gives me the depression. I hate it with a fiery passion. This winter, which has been essentially one long-ass drawn out spring has been _the worst_. Ugh. Spring.

SO, my roommate and I went to Red Lobster as an end-of-midterms celebration. We happen to get this gorgeous (dark-eyed, broad shouldered, long-legged, black) waiter named Marcus.
My roommate, who never shows sexual attraction in anyone, was smitten and proceeded to make a complete ass of herself. When he asked her if she wanted a lemon in her tea, she stared with the dilated-pupil gaze of ninja cat for at least 30 seconds. When he asked us if we wanted more bread, her mouth flopped open and she dropped half a biscuit out of it. When he asked if she wanted more tea, she flailed a weird up-and-down hand motion that kind of looks like car-dancing. I laughed so hard I had to excuse myself to cry by the lobster tank.
However, being a good roommate, I left her number on the receipt. Come on Marcus, you know you want a hot and stunningly awkward lady in your life!!

saul "the bear" berenson

@Inkcrafter I left my number for a man in a bar and now we are in love! It works!

EpWs

@Inkcrafter This is fantastic. Keep us updated pleaseeee!

angelinha

I am trying to figure out which Cetaphil lotion I am supposed to use on my face. Is the plain Moisturizing Lotion for face and body?

dj pomegranate

@angelinha That is what I use! In the huge tub!

Lowetown

Feeling really cute today! Went to bed with wet hair last night and woke up with gorgeous waves! That never happens. Also, just bought Bert's Bees tinted lip balm. So excited to try it

SarahP

@Lowetown Awesome! Really good hair days can make everything else seem better.

alphabiddycity

@Lowetown I love it when that happens. 90% of the time, if I go to bed with wet hair, I will awake looking vaguely like a brunette lion, but SOMETIMES it turns out so well.

Lowetown

@alphabiddycity Yeah! I used to have what I consider a golden era of hair, which was pretty much my entire senior year of college. It was perfectly messy/cute all the time. And then, it just stopped being that way. And this morning when I woke up and had these waves, I thought maybe the good hair era is coming back? Which made me think about hormones and how someone told me once that hormones affect your hair all throughout life.

just reading in a boat no big deal

@alphabiddycity "brunette lion." [laughs in recognition and solidarity] [slowly laughter degenerates into quiet sobs] why must hair be so hard??

LeafySeaDragon

@Lowetown burts bees pom lipbalm is my goto for everyday. if i want to be fancy i toss lipgloss on top. BEST EVAH

charlesbois

So, next Friday I am having a exploratory camera-type surgery thing that may or may not involve removing a polyp. The doc is not even sure if it is a polyp or a fibroid. This is in preparation for have teh babeh. I've never had general anesthesia before and the only surgery I've ever had is wisdom teeth extraction. I'm very nervous. Anyone want to chime in with polyp removal stories?

ohnoohno

@charlesbois no polyp removal stories, but I will be having some anesthesia-style surgery soon in prep for babies too and I am nervous.

However, I've found that if you've got something crazy growing in you, getting it removed will generally make you feel better. Also, get a copy of that tape!

Good luck.

charlesbois

@charlesbois Good luck to you too!

Dancercise

I'm going to be in London and Paris for two weeks at the end of May. What should I do? What should I see?

More battenburg, vicar?

@Dancersize In London I love the Geffrye Museum, which has a series of period rooms from the 16th century through to the present day. The 1970s one is shocking like the one I grew up with. Lovely historic gardens too. If you want a panoramic view of London, go to the top of Primrose Hill - there's a nice Russian cafe at the bottom too.

charlesbois

@Dancersize can't chime in on London, but I have some great Paris memories. What do you like to do? Do you like art, or fashion, or gardens, or eating, or people watching, or sports, or what? I highly recommend going to the Louvre EARLY and rushing to see the Mona Lisa immediately. Then spend the rest of the day there leisurly looking at the various types of art you like. Also I recommend going to the Musee d'Orsay, taking the elevator up to the top floor, and then working your way down.

I also recommend going on the tour of Notre Dame where you can go up on the parapet. And very near there is La Sainte Chappelle, which is the most beautiful gothic church you will ever see. Soaring stained glass windows on all four walls. It is just breathtaking.

Oh there's so much to see and do, I wish I could write 10 paragraphs on this.

Faintly Macabre

@Dancersize The Louvre sculpture gallery is so fun! (Make sure you take the secret entrance to the Louvre, aka not through the pyramid!)

Also, Parc des Buttes Chaumont is SO SO SO SO cool and not really known by tourists. It should be beautiful in May.

mackymoo

@More battenburg, vicar? @Dancersize TOTALLY SECONDED. The Geffrye Museum was my absolute favorite place in London when I studied abroad there. What kind of things are you into? I know about all the English major nerdy stuff. Spend some time in Hampstead on the heath, it is so nice there. There was a cool booksale underneath Waterloo Bridge, don't know if it is still there. The Soane Museum is another quirky little museum.

Oh but the sex museum in Paris is interesting. I also wanted to go to the catacombs but they were closed.

Actually in both cities you should just walk all day.

Dancercise

Thanks, everyone! So many awesome things to do!

In general, I'm interested in delicious food, architecture, outdoor things (parks, gardens, etc.), English major nerdy stuff, and gorgeous scenery.

mackymoo

@Dancersize Maybe a native can speak for the food/bar scene, but I really enjoyed Dickens's house, the British Library, Kenwood House, Highgate Cemetery, also Keat's house and the Freud museum (more Hampstead stuff). Also it's touristy, but those walks can be a good way to take in a lot of information and see places you might not otherwise get to. We went on an Oscar Wilde one and went into this little museum in a cigar shop that isn't open to the public. Also since a lot of the big museums are free, you can just pop in for a little bit without feeling obligated to get your money's worth. The Wellcome Collection has a lot of freaky history of medicine artifacts/dead bodies. Whyyyy do I not live in London?

[sic]

@Faintly Macabre ...ooorrr the Parc de Belleville: even more obscure, and it has a gorgeous view!

Lucienne

@Dancersize In Paris, the Rodin Museum has a nice garden, and if you get there early you can snag the best chairs! Also, I think it's free on ... Tuesdays? And another good thing about the Louvre is that it is very close to a lot of other stuff (Tuileries, Place de la Concorde, rue de Rivoli, Musee de l'Orangerie).

In London, the Courtauld Gallery is free before 3PM on Mondays (I think!!) and has a lovely, extremely diverse collection. They have a pretty good café and a surprisingly reasonably priced bookshop.

Also, I don't know if you're planning any day trips to anywhere, but you should definitely consider Oxford. May is when everyone sits their exams in subfusc, and walking up High Street is a bit like being transported back to an Evelyn Waugh novel or something. Plus, you can grab a sandwich at Olives (the "favorite sandwich" is amaaaaaazing, I might start crying thinking about it) and check out the Botanical Gardens. There's also the Ashmolean, and Christ Church Meadow.

pixieg

@Dancersize Go to Greenwich! Because it is beautiful. And you can go up to the observatory and look at all the time-related stuff, and go to the MARITIME MUSEUM which I did for my birthday once. Greenwich is lovely and green with lovely buildings. I also like the British Museum, and the film museum is great if you're into that kind of thing (but you have to pay). Also I went to the Cartoon Museum once and it seemed like an English Major might like it? (Because I'm British 'English Major' always makes me think of a moustachio'd army dude.) For things to do in the evening, my partner works at the Prince Charles Cinema and they constantly have lots of cool events. On Sunday they have a Big Lebowski quote-along. I've never been to that but I believe you get a free White Russian with your ticket, and lots of people dress up. For cheap pubs go to any Sam Smiths - whenever I go, I get absolutely destroyed on Alpine Lager.
UM UM UM! I am so excited by this question! I love London but I can't go running around at the mo as I have lots of work that needs me to stay inside and type on my computer :(
Have fun! Will be interested in what you decide to do!

Oh, P.S. Spoonfed and lecool are good sites for checking what events are on in London as well.

missupright

@Dancersize OOOH. The Marais is not any of the things you mentioned, but I am a Literature student and I love love love it. And it has the Florence Kahn bakery (which has the best bagels I have ever had) and it has the best creperie in the world, which is bright blue, tiny, eat-in-the-street, ex-drug-store (and the owner! He is a darling! He invited us in! We spoke to his cousin on Skype! He thinks I "sing beautifully!"). And it has a million cheap vintage shops, and cafés, and cobbles, and sometimes big klezmer bands (sp?) and dancing. Other things that I love here: Les Puces, the big flea market on Sunday mornings. Eating sherbet fountains by the lake in the Jardin Tuileries makes me alarmingly happy. The big bookshop on the Rue de Rivoli, Galignani, is so, SO, worth a visit. Shakespeare and Co. is one of my favourite places on Earth, especially upstairs, because you can just read all their books, and sit there and read and listen to the rain outside and Feel Soothed. (I am such a Paris fan-girl. It's going to break my heart when I leave for England.) I have definitely rambled, but there are so many things I love about this city. Hope some of it helps. xx

RK Fire

Man, I had been thinking of fun things to post to the Open Thread all week and now I completely forgot them! :( Oh well. Life is swell in the world of RK Fire, and I'm feeling really excited about spring. Just full of optimism and hope and all sorts of other things. I've been having another bout of struggling with body acceptance versus trying to lose body fat, but other than that, things are swell. I'm turning 28 next Tuesday, and I have plans to go check out a new restaurant with my husband for a bday dinner.

Also: I am loving our Fitocracy group! Just want to plug that again on here. Let me know if you're interested or need info.

joie

@RK Fire I'm interested! Tell me more. I'm in the same boat re: body acceptance and just had one of those terrible conversations with myself about 15 minutes ago where I spent way too much time looking the mirror, over-analyzing my body. So, I feel ya. Let's make it our weekend mission to love our bodies, just for the weekend. We can let next week take care of itself, but for this weekend, I think I'm just going to allow myself to love my body, just as it is, not with stronger abs or smaller hips or skinnier arms or less of a spare tire. Just as it is.

RK Fire

@heyits: Sure, I'll talk about my feelings! ;D Basically I'm coming to realize that I'm naturally a short, stout woman. This is coming after years of being told "OMG YOU'RE SO TINY!!" (due to, I think, my height, since I've topped out at 5'2") which always made me internalize this notion that I am a lot slimmer than I actually am. I'm not plus sized but I always had this perception that I was slimmer than I actually am. It probably helps that I am asian, and grew up with a mom who was like "Americans are so huge and ginormous! wah wah wah!" Anyway, this dissonance comes to a head whenever I'd see pictures of myself and see what.. I actually look like? Maybe only what I look like at terrible angles? I can't decide, but I don't like it.

To compound things a little further, I've been playing sports/being active since I was 19 (so: "late bloomer" is pretty much me in a nut shell socially/physically) and I've always had a stronger affinity for weightlifting and generally pushing things (I used to play rugby in college) than anything remotely cardio. So now I've been doing olympic weightlifting for fun, which is all peachy keen and everything, but every so often I'm plagued with this thought of "man, should I begrudgingly do the activities I dislike more often and give up weightlifting for a bit all in the name of losing some fat?"

This whole thing is usually triggered by when I see pictures of myself as well as some fortuitous timing by my hormones. My husband, who I love dearly, says he thinks I'm beautiful, the pictures are how I actually look and everyone thinks I look fine, I've always looked this way, and I'm put off by the pictures because I'm not used to seeing myself at those angles. But then he usually follows it up with "if you're not happy with the way you look, then you should probably do more cardio/conditioning because being all sadfaced is going to get you but so far" which really annoys and upsets me because I don't want to give up the barbells. I usually retort with "if I can only clean up my diet, that's what I need to do and that way I don't have to do more conditioning."

The current compromise I'm doing with myself is that I will work in one conditioning session a week (on top of 3 days of lifting) and clean up my diet. But you know, sometimes I look at the other stout and/or athletic woman at the gym and I'm like "well, I think they look fine! why can't I be as generous to myself?"

tl;dr: sad trombone, you are right and we should just commit to loving ourselves this weekend.

but everything else is fine! I'm working on my timing and getting under the bar in olympic weightlifting, I have a mental roadmap on how to develop some career skills I've been wanting for awhile without having to leave my job, and I'll be going out to Seattle at the end of March! So I guess I feel like I shouldn't complain.

RK Fire

@RK Fire: er, wow. so many feelings.

So the other thing in my head right now is a possible trip to France and Spain, and I'm really interested in seeing/engaging with other diasporic communities outside of a US context. I have Lavapies in Madrid and Belleville in Paris to check out, as well as a note on Marseille. Any other suggestions?

Faintly Macabre

@RK Fire I don't know if this is helpful, but in college I played Ultimate with a lot of girls who sound a lot like you (shorter, often Asian, a bit stockier), and as a tall, slow person, I was always so impressed with how they were so compactly strong and usually speedy they were. I guess that doesn't go into physical attractiveness much, and having legs on the muscle-y side, I know how that can translate in pictures, but I think being strong and fit is a lot cooler than just looking nice in photos, right?

EpWs

@RK Fire OMG, 5'3" here and getting told "Oh you're so tiny!" all your life definitely warps the body image. I am just now coming to terms with my curves (not a lot of them, but more than I used to have and more than my brain thought I had for a long time) AND am exercising more. So yo, I feel you, at least on certain points.

RK Fire

@Faintly Macabre: This is what I try to tell myself! And honestly, if any other woman with a similar build came up to me and said these things, I'd probably tell her the same thing. I would be lying though if I said that there wasn't a tiny part of me that wishes I was just conventionally (and that's the key word) photogenic. ;D

bangs
bangs

@RK Fire Regarding the Fitocracy group, is it possible to do group challenges? I'm fairly new to it, so I don't really know all you can do.

RK Fire

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher: It is totally a weird thing! I've actually had to buy myself a lot of underwear recently because I finally came to terms with the ramifications of having a large butt.. which is the result of doing a lot of squats. I have been generally proud of my butt I was in denial for a very long time about the implications that had for the underwear sizes I should be looking at.

RK Fire

@bangs: I think we could do group challenges, but I'm not the admin--candybeans is our fearless admin! I think the challenge would be figuring out a reasonable challenge given our disparate goals and interests. Do you have any suggestions? The other thing I guess we could do is to rotate between different types, e.g. a one rep max back squat one month, who can run the best 40 yard time another month.

joie

@RK Fire woah we have such similarities going on here! I am also a late athletic bloomer. I played some sports in high school but I was never good at them and it was all co-ed. Two years ago I started running because I entertained this notion of becoming a police officer and needed to be able to pass a physical. And it just stuck with me. Now I run 4-5 days a week and it feels so good. However, the better shape I get into, the more burly I get, in some places. It's so frustrating. I've always had a big ass and thighs, and they've basically stayed the same size. My arms are pretty big and muscular, and in general I just feel like an Amazon woman. I'm also 5'8, so I'm not the petite type. I like being strong. I like improving as a runner. But sometimes I would give anything to have the classic lithe runner's build.

I think the intersection between how we view ourselves and how the world sees us is really interesting to examine, and you sound like a total badass with the weight lifting! I'd like to join Fitocracy. Do I need an invite?

candybeans

@RK Fire OOh, great ideas! I have no idea how setting up challenges works, but I could figure it out this weekend! I remain passionately in love with Fitocracy, and our little Pinner group! Especially since a few of us are just starting out, and it's so exciting to see people posting about their first 5k or bench press. LOVE it. Max squat would be fun, as would rotating types of challenges, so that the runners or yoga-doers wouldn't feel left-out. I'll work on it! And, more people, join us! Fitocracy has often been the carrot at the end of the workout stick for me--especially before I start to see results in my actual physique.

Elsajeni

@RK Fire How do I join the group! I tried to search for it and found nothing.

candybeans

@Elsajeni you have to go to the "groups" tab and search in there, not the search field on the home page. It's called "Pinners," as opposed to "The Hairpin," or, "The Only Website Other Than Fitocracy I Read Anymore," or whatever. If Elsajeni is your Fitocracy username, i can invite you, too!

candybeans

@Elsajeni here's an invite to the group: http://ftcy.co/ymK2Nh which should work a bunch of times, in case anyone else sees this. Also, i just followed you, so you can get to the group through my profile, too.

bangs
bangs

@candybeans Is it possible to make a challenge that we can work together as a group at? Like all contribute to running/walking some great distance, or lifting something heavy, or the like?

candybeans

@bangs I love that idea! Sadly, I just discovered about five minutes ago that the challenges are all pre-set--I can just choose from a list of challenges, like, "who can go up the most stairs?" or, "who can do the heaviest-weighted widowmaker?" I know there are user-created quests in one group, and I think we can unofficially make up our own, but it would be harder to keep track of, because someone would have to add up all the weight we lifted instead of the machines doing it for us. But, I'll do a little more research this weekend and see what I can sort out!

AndSomethingElse

@RK Fire Here's what this conversation makes me want to say: I have this lady friend who is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I'm not being hyperbolic here! Some dudes will say Scarlett Johanssen, some will say some girl they saw on the subway six years ago...I say her. She's short (adorably short) and she doesn't have much of a waist. She's in good shape - she works out a lot and she's got serious muscles - she's just...not willowy? Early on, I told her in a post-sex moment that I loved her body. Which is true, because I do, and she was bending over to check on her dog with the morning light shining across her ass and she looked fucking amazing. And she said, "Good, because this is pretty much how it looks." It was one of the sexiest things a woman has ever said to me.

joie

after reading about all the amazing solar activity in the atmosphere, I dragged myself out of bed last night at 10:30, grabbed my son and drove out to a dark spot on the beach. We sat on the hood of my car, wrapped in sleeping bags and drinking tea. We listened to Sigur Ros and watched the aurora borealis for at least an hour. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect. And thinking about it now makes me cry because I realized it's the first time in months that I have legitimately happy. Life is finally getting better, I think, after 6 months of sheer hell. I'm so glad.

atipofthehat

@heyits

So happy for you. And, what a wonderful outing!

wee_ramekin

@heyits Seconding Tip's sentiments, and also writing to say that I bet he will remember that really fondly when he grows up.

Decca

@heyits Wow, that's amazing. And I'm seconding what wee_ramekin said. When I was about eight, my dad brought me to a nighttime star-gazing event and I still remember it as one of the best nights of my life.

atipofthehat

@wee_ramekin

But...I AM GROWN UP?

I guess that's debatable.

atipofthehat

@Decca

Me, too!

My daughter is fascinated with the Moon, so we are always going on lunar expeditions.

cuminafterall

@heyits Everybody take your kids out to look at the night sky always. My fondest childhood memories are of getting up in the middle of the night to go comet-spotting.

joie

@cuminafterall Some of my favorite memories as a kid involve that too! My dad and I used to lie in the front yard in the winter (the only time of year you can stargaze in Alaska - so inconvenient!) and watch the stars until we were numb to the bone. It was magical. I loved how teeny tiny it made me feel in comparison to the big old universe.

@atipofthehat your daughter is lucky to have such a great dad. I think it's wonderful that you do that with her. I know she'll treasure those memories when she's older.

seriously folks, I think the answer to finding happiness in the midst of dark times is to stargaze. There's so much beauty just waiting to be discovered.

George Templeton Strong

As the Dowager Countess Grantham of Downton Abbey would say, "What is a week-end?" Last Fall I got pushed out of a job I had for almost 21 years and, having survived the initial shock, am now working for myself. It was slow going at first, but as I learned and have mentioned to several friends, "There is a lot of work out there; there just aren't many jobs." A collaborator and I will be working tomorrow (Saturday) but on the other hand yesterday (Thursday) I did a client pitch/conference call at 11 AM that went well. It was a warm and windy day here in New York, and I wasn't trapped in some godawful cubicle (as I was reduced to a few months before I was laid off, having had an office the size of my living room for about 18 years.) I made the call from my apartment, took my elderly hound for a walk, had lunch that I made and that cost about $1.50, then went back to a freelance assignment. To the unemployed and the not-yet-employed among you: There is hope.

That said, Happy Friday everyone. I'm done with my work so I'm off to NetFlix streaming. Any recommendations?

SarahP

@George Templeton Strong The Lady Vanished, a great, cute Hitchcock movie I discovered on streaming last week. Do it!

Decca

@SarahP One of the greatest early Hitchcocks. Do it!

Fodforever

@George Templeton Strong Glad your Friday is going well! In terms of Netflix recs, obviously you like DTA, so if you are feeling period dramas I liked "North and South" and "Wives and Daughters."

Do you have any genres in mind? TV, movie, comedy... Home Movies is one of my all-time favorite shows, but it takes a bit to get into (you can probably skip the first season). It's animated... so if that's not your thing I've heard really great things about the movies "Weekend" and "The Trip."

frigwiggin

@Fodforever I loooooove Home Movies! I think the first season is gold, personally, but I love it all. "Brendon, there's nothing wrong with lying to women. Or the government. Or parents. Or God."

atipofthehat

@SarahP

That's The Lady Vanishes.

Yes, great movie! Also, The 39 Steps!

atipofthehat

@atipofthehat

AND, for his first long, continuous crane-shot from high-up to close-up, Young and Innocent.

Fodforever

@figwiggin Home Movies, seriously, is largely responsible for the person I am today! I honestly have not seen season 1 for years because I am a squiggle-vision snob, and just feel like they didn't really find their voice until the move to adult swim. Maybe I should give it another try though!

Also, I just started watching Archer just to hear the dulcet tones of H. Jon Benjamin!

"Rashes come from bad hygiene, all right? So what you've gotta do, whenever you go to a public restroom, and you sit on a toilet seat, put the toilet seat cover down. And if they don't have them there, manufacture one out of toilet paper, or your shirt, or your socks. Anything to cover the seat."

frigwiggin

@Fodforever I think you should--I love the retroscripting of season one. It's less streamlined, but I have a great fondness for the awkward, rambling conversations.

mascarasnake

@SarahP Also a good book, if you like prewar lit/the movie

thesailorsaid

Two things:

1-I somehow managed to trick a medical office into giving me a job! I start Monday and owe Ask a Manager a thank you letter so much. I'm going to be an on-call administrative assistant, does anyone have advice on the on-call lifestyle? I'm so nervous and excited!

2-Would any of you read a makeup/beauty blog written by an unattractive woman?

I've got quite good facial features, but I'm a deathfat. Sure, what does your body size have to do with makeup/nails/hair, nothing really. But I have a fat face and large double chin, hell my eyelids are fat, and any nail photos capture my overly-plump-to-some fingers. I just don't see me having much "click on my link!" credibility with chicks googling for advice on how to look pretty when there are so many model-gorgeous bloggers out there. I don't look like an expert in this realm, and I can't sell a fantasy of being hot no matter what I do.

But I want to leverage my love of makeup, my knowledge of it, and my online marketing skills I've picked up into a business on the side. I had a website before that I threw myself into, a fansite for a band that I absolutely slaved over, and it never amounted to anything. If I'm going to fail beforehand because I'm not hot enough, I don't want to bother. I just can't put myself through it again if I can't turn a profit.

EpWs

@thesailorsaid Dude, I am so sick of beauty/makeup/etc blogs written by model-like ladies. I totally see yours having a great market and an audience!

Also CONGRATS on the job!

Cat named Virtute

@thesailorsaid I would love to see more fatshion blogging in the world! I think if you did some twitter/tumblr networking with HAAS and fatshion writers as well as more mainstream fashion writerss, you could definitely make a go of it. And definitely keep us updated here!

Marquise de Morville

@thesailorsaid Yes, do it! I would read it, and I think there must be a lot of not-model gorgeous women out there looking for advice. Could you maybe write an example for the Hairpin? I am sure there would be interest. (Every time I put on eye make-up it just vanishes behind my double eyelid so none of the awesome cat's eyes tutorials work for me.)

KeLynn

@thesailorsaid As long as the content was good, I don't see why people wouldn't follow. I only follow a few beauty blogs because I find a lot of them lacking, but the ones I follow I either follow because A) they actually teach me things, like how exactly to apply eyeshadow or they review new products or B) they have very similar coloring to me so the products and shades they pick are relevant to me

Neither of those reasons are "because she's pretty and I like to look at her face" because - yawn! I don't care about her face. I care about my face.

ayo nicole

@thesailorsaid 1) Congrats on your job! 2) Start that blog! If you know your shit that's what's most important.

aubrey!

@thesailorsaid So many times yes! I love reading makeup blogs and as a fellow fattie with an exuberance of chins, I would definitely follow your blog.

Donovanesque

Hi y'all. Happy weekend!

I'm new here. I used to be a moderator on Jezebel...I had some philosophical differences with them, though. I've been reading Hairpin off and on for a while and thought I would say hello.

It's been an exciting week for me because I just got a book contract! I pushed back and asked to retain the movie rights and I just got an email saying OK. I am so relieved. I knew they wouldn't say, "no movie rights for you, and now we're mad at you for asking and the deal is off!" but it still made me nervous to ask. ...And I probably won't do anything with the movie rights! But you never know.

In other news, I am getting a tattoo next Thursday! I've never gotten one before. It's just a shamrock. Because I'm pretty Irish and like Ireland and good luck.

alphabiddycity

@Donovanesque I love tattoos. It hurts, but it's the best kinda pain, you know what I mean?

EpWs

@Donovanesque I love everything about this! Congrats on the book deal, high five for standing up for your [movie] rights, and hooray for getting a tattoo! It will make you feel like a badass, guaranteed. Where are you getting it?

Donovanesque

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Haha, thank you! I'm just getting the shamrock on my leg above my ankle, so it's not really all that badass :) I think it'll be fun, though.

EpWs

@Donovanesque You are letting a bunch of needles punch ink into your skin. Inherently badass. Get some Aquaphor to help with the healing process--it helped heal mine up very quickly and happily, and many of my friends have used and loved it too!

Megasus

@Donovanesque Congrats! I am a book publishing student, so I know that the first contract is the one that's in the best interest of the publisher, so they are of course willing to negotiate on it. Congrats on getting to keep the movie rights though, that's pretty big!

LeafySeaDragon

@Donovanesque shamrock tattoo are awesome. i plan on getting a clover and clover flower anklet one of these days. *if my damn man would hurry up and take his turn so i can go!!!! damn being fair!!!!

Donovanesque

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher ooh, thanks for the tip! I never heard of Aquaphor.

EpWs

@Donovanesque Protip: you can use it on EVERYTHING. Dry skin? Chapped lips? AQUAPHOR.

george glass

@Donovanesque WHAT, I just posted about my impending ink downthread. Good luck! :)

Faintly Macabre

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Aquaphor is AWESOME. It is my favorite chapstick besides Badger Balm. And my dermatologist keeps shoving more free samples on me, so I have an unlimited supplyyyyy!!

Donovanesque

@george glass Yay! Good luck to you too!

teebs

@Donovanesque Hi. Congrats on your book deal and standing up for yourself on those movie rights. Good luck with the tattoo!

gobblegirl

Ooh, ooh! Followup to the fitted button-up discussion from earlier in the week: I found the PERFECT BUTTON-UP (for my body). I am tall (long torso, long arms), hefty-chested, and slimmish (but have no identifiable waist), and I usually have such a hard time. But I hit gold at the mall…Mexx!!! They are crazy expensive, but really high quality. Unfortunately, there’s not much colour choice, but otherwise completely miraculous. I am so excited. I want to get a fancier job just so I will have to wear them every day!

Faintly Macabre

@gobblegirl Arrrrrghhh I have the exact same body type minus big boobs (though I have a big ribcage, yayyy), but I can't afford nice shirts unless they're at Goodwill. I'll have to remember Mexx for when/if I get a *real* job!

Marquise de Morville

@gobblegirl @Faintly Macabre Thank you! I will definitely check out that brand now, we do seem to have a similar shape. I do have a very narrow torso, though. I recently got a short sleeved boy's shirt at Goodwill that fits surprisingly well, but it is not interview-fancy.

redheaded&crazy

@gobblegirl ALSO following up to this discussion, I wanted to talk about my perfect button up, but the largest size I've tried it in was size 10 so I wasn't sure if it was appropriate or inappropriate

anyway Banana Republic has the BEST button ups (had?) that button up differently at the bust, waist and below the waist and I love love love them. I have 3 - one from when I weighed more, and two at a smaller size, and they fit so perfectly everywhere

I found the second two at a BR outlet where they had a bajillion in different colours (and on sale of course). if only i actually wore button downs more often.

gobblegirl

@redheaded&crazy Next time I will also try BR. Yeah, it wasn't a plus-size problem, but everyone was talking about button-ups so it seemed relevant? I didn't want to threadjack or be a jerk.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@redheaded&crazy Tell me more about this variety buttoning style shirt. I just checked the website and the button plackets all look pretty normal?

redheaded&crazy

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me

I'm not good at online shopping and things but i found a picture here here you can kinda see how clearly this blouse is made for chicks with bigger boobs than that model, there's room for it or whatever

just reading in a boat no big deal

Yay! The caption about hair gives me a flawless segue.

HAIR QUESTION: Are there any wavy or curly girls who use diffusers? Specifically this diffuser?: http://www.sallybeauty.com/finger-diffuser/SBS-345002,default,pd.html.

I am starting to believe that the claim that this fits "most dryers" is a beautiful lie. It doesn't fit my current dryer, or my roommate's, and since I am running low on girl friends who will give me access to their hair dryers, I have *no* idea what to use. I even got creatively ghetto, and tried my diffuser on those hair dryers on display at Target. I found no matches, plus it was a major dignity FAIL.

Google is turning up nothing, and the info on naturallycurly isn't specific enough (brand and model number, etc.). Help me a girl out, ladies!!

just reading in a boat no big deal

@lamigra Ahem. That was supposed to read "Help me out, ladies!" But yes, please, help me--a girl--out.

BosomBuddy

@lamigra I bought this as a replacement for my old diffuser, and, while it does not fit my dryer perfectly, gets the job done. I really have to push it on there and it falls off (I guess as the heat expands the plastic in the dryer) at least once when drying. I dry for about 5-10 minutes. It's a huge pain in the ass, but I'm used to it now. I also don't diffuse everyday and it saves the cost of buying a brand new hairdyer.

BosomBuddy

@BosomBuddy Wow, what I just said really didn't help at all. I can only commiserate. I have likewise had no luck with replacement diffusers. First, they're hard to find, and second, they never fit.

gobblegirl

@lamigra I have mad curlz, and I just use the diffuser that came with my hair dryer (which is from Costco). It works just fine for me, as long as I am SO CAREFUL not to fiddle with my hair while it’s blowing. What I do is sort of put most of it up in bunches in big claw clips (don’t twist it up or anything; try to scrunch it up naturally. I try to sort of open the clip points-up under the hair, and lift the hair with the clip and then close it around the pile of hair once I’m at the top…if that makes sense? It’s most important to do this on the crown and back, where I find that it sometimes out at the roots from the sheer weight of hair if I dry it naturally). I then dry it 80% like that, then drop it and let it dry the rest of the way on its own.
Good luck!

BosomBuddy

@lamigra It would seem that amazon shoppers agree on the conair diffusers, and others of its ilk.

Have you ever tried this type? The name of this one is ridiculous, but I have no idea whether it's suitable for curly/wavy hair. Could be worth a shot, though. http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Sock-Ultralight-Diffuser/dp/B0006Q01EI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1331329348&sr=8-3

Faintly Macabre

@gobblegirl I just imagined using a big crow's claw to hold up your hair. I miss Melis.

Thank you for writing that all out! I have a TIGI/Bedhead dryer that came with a decent diffuser, but I've never managed to use a dryer on my hair without just making it frizzier. I'll have to try that.

Antonius Block

@lamigra I have a diffuser that looks almost exactly like that one (same brand, no red, no "Pro" label), and I use it on this hair dryer: http://www.target.com/p/Revlon-Full-Size-Hair-Dryer-Chrome/-/A-11235473?

just reading in a boat no big deal

@BosomBuddy thanks for the tip! i decided to buy the conair diffuser i mentioned, and then find a blow dryer to fit it. but since that isn't working out, i might as well take a look at what else is out there.

just reading in a boat no big deal

@gobblegirl oooh. a technique. it sounds a little Hair Advanced for me right now, but i will give it a shot.

just reading in a boat no big deal

@Antonius Block hurray, a blow dryer recommendation! this is what i was hoping for. you don't have a problem with the diffuser popping off all the time?

Antonius Block

@lamigra Nope! They work beautifully together.

More battenburg, vicar?

I've started to liberate books I've read by leaving them around the town I live in, for other people to pick up. So that's one fun thing I'll be doing tomorrow:

http://thewell-readdog.blogspot.com/

AndSomethingElse

@More battenburg, vicar? Do you know bookcrossing.com? It lets you track your book after you release it. Kinda fun, if you're leaving books around anyway.

More battenburg, vicar?

@Alexander I don't know it, so will have a peep, thank you. Some people get their excitement from absailing down cliffs or jumping out of planes. Me, it's all about second hand novels and park benches.

joie

@More battenburg, vicar? what a great idea! I'm going to add you to my reader.

More battenburg, vicar?

@heyits Thank you muchly! It's only the second week I've been doing it, but I'm really enjoying the sneaking around aspect of it (I don't want people to see me leave the book in case they think I've just forgotten it and try to give it back to me!)

AndSomethingElse

@More battenburg, vicar? Also, when I release a book I write my thoughts on the inside cover. Like a brief review. It's probably totally annoying to anyone who picks it up, but whatever I like it. I'd enjoy it if I were the picker-upper. (Also, it makes it clear that I did this on purpose...I worry that people will feel bad when they pick one of my cast-offs up, like "Oh bummer, somewhere there's a dude who can't read his book right now.")

joie

@More battenburg, vicar? I think you've inspired me to do the same. Random acts of literature!

mascarasnake

@More battenburg, vicar? People who jump out of planes and abseil also tend to be the people who force you to look at slideshows of them on vacation, so I like you much better. You don't mind if I copy you, I hope? Sneakiness and books = funtimes to me

More battenburg, vicar?

@Alexander I've made little stickers to go on the books for just this reason - they basically say 'this book is yours now' (so pick it up already and stop worrying . . . )

More battenburg, vicar?

@mascarasnake Please copy! I picture a small but highly-trained band of international book liberators.

AndSomethingElse

@More battenburg, vicar? Stickers! Cool!

MidoriSour

Can any pregnant or mother Pinners suggest any decent blogs/websites that have a Hairpin-ish vibe? I am kinda of terrified to begin with, and if I remember The Knot correctly, I don't want to make it worse with The Bump.

Also, this me announcing to the entire internet --and not any of my family or friends (except my BFF) because it's way too early -- that I found out I'm pregnant this week! Which is YAY and also OMG.

atipofthehat

@MidoriSour

Congratulations!

anachronistique

@MidoriSour Mazel tov!

Faintly Macabre

@MidoriSour STFUparents is a good what-not-to-do site! (It's funny, I promise!) Otherwise, I can't help you, but congratulations!

EpWs

@MidoriSour Congratulations! I don't know any parenting blogs but I am sure you are going to do great. Also I believe there are a handful of pregnant 'Pinners around so if nothing else you guys can conspire here!

LeafySeaDragon

@MidoriSour i am dead serious when i say this - avoid the internet for parenting stuff at all costs.

carbonation

@MidoriSour Me too! Congratulations!

You could try altdotlife.com ... I lurk over there sometimes and the pregnancy/parenting forum seems pretty okay in comparison to a lot of what's out there. There is a distinct lack of cutesy acronyms and long sparkly signatures.

olivebee

@Faintly Macabre Yes! I love STFUParents (though it makes me so worried about humanity). But it's for sure a "here's what you DON'T want to do as a parent" blog.

@MidoriSour @carbonation Congrats!!

gobblegirl

@MidoriSour Congratulations. I am not a parent, nor am I likely to be one soon, but from what I've gathered from others: read up on maternal and child nutrition because it's a Big Deal, and follow your instincts on the rest. Unless your an asshole, the behavioural stuff will probably work out fine!

MidoriSour

@MidoriSour Thanks everyone! STFU Parents is wonderful. And congrats! @carbonation

Faintly Macabre

So there is a job that looks possibly within my qualifications (aka I went to school and I read things a lot!) and is in food policy/agriculture/nutrition, which was part of my studies at school. BUT on researching the group, I found that they're essentially pro-GMOs. (Their line is that they need lots of careful testing and oversight, but that they will eventually save everyone wheee) And I am decidedly not. -But- they are allied with Marion Nestle, whom I love, and GMO policy isn't a major aspect of their work. Should I still apply?

(And just as a caveat, I know other people have other opinions on GMOs, which I respect, but that's not a discussion I want to get into online.)

george glass

@Faintly Macabre Can't hurt to try. Worry about the minutia of their politics when you get the job.

Faintly Macabre

@george glass Well, it's a bit more than minutia--they've taken an official stance and put out policy papers on it, and thereby gotten other groups mad. I guess part of my reservations are from not knowing how well they get along with other organizations I like. But you're probably right--any job is such a longshot right now that agonizing over it at this stage isn't worthwhile.

MilesofMountains

@Faintly Macabre Depends. If you get the job, you'll probably have to keep your mouth shut on the subject of GMOs, at least in public and around your coworkers. I am in a similar situation (not GMO-related) and sometimes that chafes. Obviously, I believe it's not necessarily wrong to work for a company with policies you disagree with, as long as you don't find them abhorent, but you have to be honest with yourself about how shitty it'll make you feel. Also, how shitty your friends will make you feel. I have some friends who very much disagree with my work, and it's definitely strained the friendship a bit.

frigwiggin

Okay, I asked last week and nobody answered, so I'm trying again. Any Pinners want to share their blogs/Tumblrs/whatever? I know I yammer on about the one that I and @SheWhoReadsInSkirts run all the time, but we have a daily style blog! And we *cough* may have both dressed up like Dr. John Watson recently. Bloggers, give me your blogs!

Lily Rowan

@figwiggin http://goodstuffhappenedtoday.tumblr.com/ Mostly cute animals, some positive news stories, some attractive humans....

EpWs

@figwiggin I has a tumblr, it doesn't really have a theme but it's a pretty good cross-section of my brain. I update it more than my facebook and twitter (I have a twitter?) combined.

Megasus

@figwiggin I know so many people who will love the John Watson inspired lady style. SO. MANY.
Mine are blog404.org and voguemademedoit.blogspot.com
And my twitter is @mkpatter. I mostly tweet about food and TV, not gonna lie.

EpWs

@Lily Rowan You are the genius behind Good Stuff Happened Today? I heart that blog. Heart it, I say!

frigwiggin

@Lily Rowan @The Everpresent Wordsnatcher @Megan Patterson@facebook

Yayyyy! I need to add a Pinnerblog folder to my Google Reader. (Does anybody else even use Google Reader anymore? I'm still pissed that they took away sharing, but my blog-reading roots are in too deep there to pull them up now.)

meetapossum

@figwiggin I love Google Reader, and I also miss the sharing option. It was lovely.

I also have a tumblr, but much like TEW, it's just pretty random stuff.

Lily Rowan

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Aw, thank you! It is sort of a group project, but I do most of the reblogging, at least...

Daisy Razor

@figwiggin I am bookmarking all of you. This is me.

@Megan Patterson@facebook I just started following you and your dog sounds awesome.

@meetapossum I looove random stuff. The only Tumblrs I was following before this were a handful of Sherlock ones and Gingerhaze, so this is great.

@Daisy Razor "To What Has Daisy Glued Her Hand This Week?" You sound like my kinda blogger.

EpWs

@Daisy Razor Your blog is making me giggle ALL the giggles. Bookmarrrrrrked.

Decca

@figwiggin Loooove the dressing up like John Watson! Really nicely done, both of you. I don't have a blog or anything, but I do have a twitter, filled with nonsense! @casserine

Daisy Razor

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Thanks, lady! It was supposed to be my serious grown-up blog, but it turns out I am REALLY BAD at being a serious grown up.

More battenburg, vicar?

@figwiggin Posted this below, but this looks like the right place for it. My Jack Russell, Fizz, has just started her own blog:

http://thewell-readdog.blogspot.com/

Xanthophyllippa

@figwiggin My blog. It's about writing and the teaching thereof, though, so any humor value it has is of the black variety.

Megasus

@Decca Thank you, he is trying (and succeeding) at scamming cheese off me right now. I followed you back!

pixieg

@figwiggin Here is my tumblr. Much of it is feminism and UK politics, but also things that look nice and things that make me laugh. Also: Ryan Gosling. I rarely actually write anything, and it is mostly reblogs, but it is basically my mind.

ETA: I have twitter too if anyone wants to follow me?

Bitterblue

@figwiggin I am ChimericalOutlier.tumblr.com (dot tumblr dot com) and I am following/bookmarking you all! This is totally brilliant.

Megasus

@figwiggin Um, so that is a delightful tumblr! I may or may not be sharing it with everyone now.

anachronistique

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@Xanthophyllippa I love your blog. I have made so many posts on FB about essays I have read that I could probably start my own at this point. Mine are high schoolers, though. So the errors are more like... writing about "discovering plants" ten times in one paragraph and I don't understand the argument at all; in the conclusion I realize "plant" was how he thought PLANET was written.

Xanthophyllippa

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me Wow, you actually read it? COOL!! I'm all giggly. But remind me to tell you about the "prostatic limp."

Megasus

@Xanthophyllippa Wow re: that writing content. It might be useful to point out that actual writers have a clause in their contracts saying that their work is original too (and the publisher will not pay their legal fees if they lose in court).

Antonius Block

@figwiggin You can find me here. Going to follow each and every one of you now, la di da.

frigwiggin

@everybody Woop! I had to get off the internet on Friday because I had better things to do like sit in a car for seven hours, but I'm back and I'm adding yet more things to my Google Reader!

EpWs

@everyone Which one of y'all is Shades of Whatever on tumblr? They just started following me and they have GOT to be a 'Pinner. Fess up, SoW, you are hysterical.

LeafySeaDragon

i am super pleased with tarte's foundation primer (i has samples!!) and pretty empressed with a finishing powder as i've never bothered with one before. my chickens are getting bigger! they are 10 days old and have tiny tailfeathers now.

i found grimm on demand for free so that's what goin' on this weekend!

mackymoo

@LeafySeaDragon I just bought the MAKE UP FOR EVER HD foundation after hearing about it so much on here. It is magic!!! Will have to try this one though.

LeafySeaDragon

@mackymoo i'm going to try that one tomorrow, but i smelled them both today and the tarte smelled better! i've also tried the tarantino FP in nude and shimmer, which worked ok, but weren't as smooth.

Lowetown

@mackymoo I bought Makeup Forever HD foundation, and I also love it, BUT I've notices I'm getting more breakouts than usual and can only narrow it down to the use of said makeup :(

Manchester Tart

Hurray, I've been waiting for an open thread. I don't post much, as I am afraid of being a complete dullard, but I am going to try and get better. Anyway, I'm a Brit who has recently moved to Boston, and I've just booked a weekend trip to Chicago - just because, even though I know bugger all about the city. So Chicago pinners, or those who know the city - what should I do/ see/ eat/ drink?

wallsdonotfall

@Manchester Tart As a Bostonian living in Chicago for the past half-decade, I could go on and on. (Or take you around if you like!) But how do you normally roll on a weekend? More into concerts or cafes? Do you eat meat? Because if you do, this place is (heart attack-inducing) paradise, and there are great options even if you don't.

Roxanne Rholes

@Manchester Tart Welcome to Boston! It is great here!

Dorothea

@Manchester Tart i'm moving to boston in a couple of months!! yay boston + thehairpin

AndSomethingElse

@Manchester Tart Seconding that welcome to Boston.

A lot of you are from Boston, huh? Cool.

olivebee

@Manchester Tart Yay! Welcome to our fair city of Chicago (when you get here). I highly recommend checking out the cute, fun neighborhoods that are peripheral to the downtown area, because that's basically where all the tourists go. I would hit up Lincoln Square, Andersonville, Wicker Park, Pilsen, and/or Greektown (any of them would be fun). All these neighborhoods have great little restaurants and boutiques and stores.

If you do go downtown (The Loop), though, Millenium Park is always fun, as are both art museums (Art Institute and Contemporary Art).

anachronistique

@Manchester Tart Also welcome to Boston! Clearly we need to have another Pinup soon.

Manchester Tart

@wallsdonotfall - Yes to meat! I eat everything, all the time, so any and every restaurant recommendation would be great. And other than that I'm a 'wander around, take in the atmosphere, people watch then get a cocktail' kind of weekender, so anything along those lines.
@olivebee - thank you for the recommendations, I will definitely check them out, I'm very excited!
@everyone else - thanks for the welcomes - I've been here 6 months, but still feel like a complete newbie, particularly as I work with other Brits for very long days - sometimes forget I live here at all, and definitely don't make the most of living here. But yes - more pinups! Pinups every week!

AndSomethingElse

Also, how cute is it that she said "dullard"? You kinda have to pronounce that with a British accent, even if you're just reading it.

Marquise de Morville

@anachronistique Yes, please, I moved to Boston only recently and I missed the last pin-up.

wallsdonotfall

@Manchester Tart I second the suggestion to get out of the Loop and go relax in a neigborhood for the afternoon--Lincoln Square is my favorite, with boutiques, interesting specialty food shops, nightly concerts at the Old Town School of Folk Music, and my favorite burgers & cocktails in the city at the Bad Apple. It's a very walkable area, too, so lots of folks will be out and you can people watch.

The Art Institute is AMAZING, though, so definitely spend a few hours there. I'm also fond of the Field Museum. And do brunch! Sunday morning would be perfect for walking around Andersonville after brunch at Taste of Heaven, for example.

@blahstudent Ahh yay Boston thread! I'm moving there soon too!

I am having a wine and cheese party up in my mouth tonight, while I watch Cougartown/play Assassin's Creed 1!
Also I managed to get tickets for the Game of Thrones exhibition next weekend! And George himself is doing a book signing on Tuesday, and I am totes skipping class and going.

Donovanesque

@Megan Patterson@facebook I never play any games ever, but I am really intrigued by Assassin's Creed...

Megasus

@Donovanesque They are super fun, and pretty, and as long as you master counter attack, you're good. Although 1 is kind of bad in comparison to the newer ones, I am discovering.

camanda

@Megan Patterson@facebook Oh, man, this reminds me that when I wiped my Windows installation this week (A STORY AND A HALF maybe I should post about it downthread), I lost all my game files. I should totally spend all night playing Portal 2 over again!

ELECTROMAGNETIC CHAOS

@camanda: Steam *should* have all your Portal 2 saves backed up in the cloud.

Megasus

@Megan Patterson@facebook The Day my beautiful launch PS3 (which makes it...5 years old? 6?) dies with all my saved games on it will be a very sad day.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@Megan Patterson@facebook Wine and cheese solo party! Cougartown! These things are awesome. (I don't really play "serious" games and I haven't read beyond book 1 in ASoIaF so I am not qualified to comment on those).

Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook

@RocketSurgeon I'm in Lexington, KY.

EpWs

@Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, you are DOWN THE STREET FROM ME. And I don't mean that in a "several states/an interstate away," I mean "a 15 minute walk away." We have had Kentucky Pinners coming out of the woodwork this week, I'm organizing a 'Pinup.

Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher That is insane! I've yet to see another Lexington Pinner, and believe me I've looked! This is an exciting moment for me. Can we PLEASE please have a Pinup?!

EpWs

@Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook YES absolutely. I will start a thread over on the Google Group (and link to it here) as soon as I find it!

EpWs

@Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook Okay, I'm having issues with the Google group so I'm hijacking this thread for UNOFFICIAL KENTUCKY 'PINUP PLANNING. Everybody, report in!

Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook

@Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook Let's do this thing. Where is everyone else?!

EpWs

@Kerri Mercury Morris@facebook I don't know! A bunch (read: three?) of Kentucky people showed up on the trans-vaginal ultrasound post last week so I just posted on that thread. Either way, mini-Pinup needs to happen asap!

I am technically done for the day (nothing left to do, and the bosses all went home already), so I could leave early, but I was half-hoping Ask A Dude was coming up. I have a busy evening planned, so I guess I will have to wait to read it. I am most sorry for all of you, because I'm sure I would have had OPINIONS to share on the LWs/answers.

ohmy

Hey Pinners! I need some advice. I'm currently at the beginning of my first long distance relationship. I would like to say that I will see my guy every other weekend, but his work is so hectic i'm only going to hold out for once a month. Any advice/warnings for me to have with all this? I had a friend in college who talked to her bf every night at nine on the dot. That seems a bit excessive, but I do know that communication is key and all. Should I set ground rules? Just go with the flow? Any advice would be awesome, as I'm also pretty new to relationships (especially those of the post-college variety).

AndSomethingElse

@ohmy I'm newly into my first long-distance relationship too! OMG what a pain in the ass, huh? I see her...three out of five weekends. (We're only five hours away from each other and neither of us have very demanding jobs.)

I don't know if I have any advice. Are you monogamous?

We text a lot. Neither of us loves the phone but we do it a couple times a week anyway - sometimes just a quick call to say goodnight. I know some people Skype, but that seems...I don't know, it doesn't really appeal to either of us.

We, um, we sext. Oh God, 37-year-old dudes should not use that word. We send dirty text messages to each other. I fell asleep in the middle of doing this once. *facepalm*

But I guess LDRs are like short-distance relationships, in that there are a wide variety of them and you and your guy may want different things than me and my lady friend do. Good luck! And keep in touch so we can complain to each other about how we're not getting enough sex.

george glass

@ohmy Care packages! My BF spent 6 months perfecting his cookie recipe, and would send me the good test batches. And when we were back in the same location, he could make bomb cookies! I sent him homemade pajamas and postcards. Personal touches mean so much more from faraway.

ohmy

@Alexander Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks skyping is weird. I hate that our eyes are always looking down instead of at each other!

He's actually only 2 hours away, but I don't have car. So a lot of the travel is going to be on him (curse you rural areas without even a greyhound station!).

but yes, we can commiserate together! it's very strange that even in this "hyper-connected" world being physically present is still always the best. Video-chats have nothing on that, super annoying.

george glass

@ohmy OH ALSO. Movie dates. Mega-nerdy, but we would sync up video files via gchat (3,2,1,press play now!), and then mostly watch but also type commentary about the movie, just like you would talk a little bit if you were watching a movie together.

ohmy

@george glass I was thinking of movie/show watching! seems like a good "date" to have every so often. Also then I'd have someone to watch my nerdy shows with.

AndSomethingElse

@george glass No shit! We've been talking about doing that too! We agree that it's mega-nerdy, but it sounds sweet, too. And we tried to watch a movie once when we were actually together and that didn't work at all. (It didn't help that the movie was Secretary.) I love that you do that! I have a big cheesy smile on now.

Re. care packages...wow, you two are better at this than I am. But when I steal your idea and send her one, she is going to loooooove me. And it'll be all thanks to you.

Sucks about the transport difficulties. Neither of us have cars either, but we live in Boston and NYC so there are many options.

okaycrochet

@ohmy Netflix instant watch is golden for this too-- then you can be looking up titles and fighting over what to watch just like ye goode olde in persone days. And then watch something! And... we would be on the phone during this. As in, holding a phone to your ear while silently watching a movie and sometimes making comments. NERDY LOVE.

AndSomethingElse

Apropos of nothing, here are the two things I can carry that make women smile at me: 1) Flowers; 2) My suit, from the dry cleaners. I get #1, but why #2? I swear it's true!

EpWs

@Alexander Women love a man with a well-cleaned suit.

LeafySeaDragon

@Alexander men carrying flowers are sexy. if they are for someone else it means you are sweet and if they are for you, it means you are sensitive.

Donovanesque

@Alexander If you're carrying a suit from the dry cleaners, you look like someone who isn't too cool to care about things, and the ladies like that. :)

Manchester Tart

@Alexander, I have no rational answer but have also just smiled at the image of a man carrying a nice clean suit. And it's been a pretty smile-free day thus far.

thebestjasmine

@Alexander Men in nice suits are hot, that's why. Also, #3 is a baby.

camanda

@thebestjasmine #4 is a puppy!

AndSomethingElse

@camanda Yep, I'm well aware of the baby / puppy thing. But they are much harder to care for than suits. Last time I tried to dry clean a baby it came back missing a few buttons.

Good answer, Donovanesque.

redheaded&crazy

@Alexander gawd does anybody NOT love a man in a suit? I don't see how this can be surprising at all! a) it's more rare than it used to be to see b) well-dressed, fashionable, sharp, all of those are awesome positive words c) mmmmmmm ties

mmmm

ties

mmmmmmmmmmm

LeafySeaDragon

\portland pinup? where do i go to look for one?

miss buenos aires

Does anyone in the NYC metro area want to give me sewing lessons? I will pay you.

Donovanesque

@miss buenos aires Aww! If you were here I'd teach ya for free. :)

miss buenos aires

@Donovanesque Thanks! I appreciate the thought.

Porn Peddler

and duh as usual, I remain your most humble servant in all questions of sex, sex toys, sticking things in your boyfriend's ass, and before anyone asks, I recommend V by Icon Brands Hypersensitive Lube for all your chihuaginas (or really even if you have a vagina of steel-- it's niiiiiiiiice! Feels like the real thing!).

joie

@Third Wave Housewife you're the best. It's so nice the Hairpin has its own in-house sex advice commenter. I actually thought of you last night as I made a vegan roasted squash and cashew cheez sauce. Reading about that vegan key lime pie yesterday inspired me to make something vegan for dinner. MMMM vegan.
Where does one acquire that lube? The internets?

Porn Peddler

@heyits It's a brand new product, so I'd say the internets is your best bet. We even have trouble keeping it in stock sometimes at my store. The hypersensitive liquid is PERFECT and I keep the water based gel around for other purposes. Also, oh man, I wish I was making some cashew cheez sauce, all of that sounds delicious!

joie

@Third Wave Housewife errr...by other purposes do you mean anal? Because a decent anal lube is basically the holy grail for me.

As far as the cheez sauce, I used this recipe: http://ohsheglows.com/2011/03/10/butternut-squash-mac-n-cheeze-two-ways/ the sauce was so good I ended up standing there, eating spoonfuls of the sauce from the blender until I realized there wasn't going to be any left for the pasta.

Porn Peddler

@heyits That's 100% what I mean. I seem to have fewer lubricant woes than most women, but I will give this a shot...

Anal lube tips (SORRY TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF YOU): Gel lube, always! Gel stays in place better and acts as a cushion between the penetrative object and the anal tissue. And squeeze all the air out of the tube after using it-- letting air stagnate in the tube can make it tacky. Lotion-ish (There is really no word for it) lube is also a popular type of anal lube, just keep it away from your vagina (if you have one) and keep in mind that it does not have the same cushiony properties as gel.

If you have a vagina, avoid silicone based lube or be very careful with it (also keep in mind that it doesn't go away as quickly and quietly as leftover water based lube) Or, try the increasingly popular water-silicone blend lubes that are popping up. (I still don't think you should use these vaginally or with silicone toys, despite the manufacturers claiming they are safe)

TWH'S NUMBER ONE RULE OF ANAL LUBE: CHECK THE INGREDIENTS. IF IT CONTAINS BENZOCAINE OR LIDOCAINE OR ANY "RELAXING" OR "NUMBING" AGENTS PUT IT BACK ON THE GODDAMN SHELF, OR I WILL FIND YOU, AND I WILL SCREAM IN YOUR FACE FOR BUYING ANAL NUMBING PRODUCTS.

Alright now that that's out of the way, recommendation list:
V Water Based or Hypersensitive gel or Water/Silicone Blend Gel
Astroglide Gel (this shit gets TACKY. AS. HALE. so be very careful to squeeze the air out and keep the tip clean)
Doc Johnson Anal Lube (this is a lotion)

Alternately, and I'm not kidding about this, Crisco. Just...be careful not to get it anywhere else.

joie

@Third Wave Housewife I tried silicone based lube once and it was terrible. I went running back to my Astroglide Natural.

So, CRISCO? I guess it's good to remember if I'm in a bind, I can just run to the kitchen.

Thank you so much for these! I've written down all the brands. You rock my world. When I actually have a sexual partner (assuming I've not now reached the Spinster portion of my life) I will remember these.

elysian fields

@Third Wave Housewife yo? are you still around? I have a question!
Is it ok to use Vaseline as lube? Because ... uh ... that's what I've been doing recently. And it seems to work well. Is this bad? Am I slowly poisoning myself or something?

Porn Peddler

@heyits Silicone lube is really better for jacking off dicks, but it's also popular among older gay men, I find. I would never abandon a pinner in need of sexy product advice! (and omg I forgot to mention this DO NOT USE CRISCO IF YOU CAN AVOID IT AND DON'T USE IT WITH LATEX OR POLYISOPRENE. It is a leftover from the 70s that is best for people who don't have vaginas and who are putting like, fists in their asses. It is more of a cultural relic than an actual recommendation. Astroglide please. It is MADE FOR SEX, Crisco is MADE FOR STABILIZING FROSTING.)

@elysian fields Vaginally? That is absolutely not a good idea. If you haven't had any problems, good, but you should probably stop, because oil based lubes do not come out of the vagina so easily and provide an ideal breeding ground for infections. Crisco and Vaseline will both break down latex and potentially cause vaginal infections. If neither of these things is a concern because they are being used anally with no barrier or a non-latex barrier (POLYISOPRENE IS LATEX, DON'T USE OILS WITH IT) you should still keep in mind the potential for cross-contamination. If you happen to be a gay cis man using nitrile gloves and polyurethane condoms, then go to town...but really, could I interest any gay cis men born after 1980 in some Sliquid Ride or something? I'm about to offer to send you a tube of V hypersensitive (i should really ask about becoming an affiliate with that company....)

Tristan Taormino also likes ID Glide, Slippery Stuff Gel, and Sliquid Sassy, if for whatever reason you like those recommendations better.

In short, please just buy some lube that is specifically formulated for sex. I should not have even mentioned crisco...

joie

@Third Wave Housewife not to worry, I was joking about the Crisco. But since we're talking about weird, non-sex specific lubricants, I have to share about the time that my ex-boyfriend mistakenly grabbed my bottle of Biolage heat protecting serum instead of lube and used it when we had anal sex. I kept saying, "honey, that just...doesn't feel right. Are you sure you grabbed the right stuff?" He insisted it was the lube and I was enjoying myself too much to check. And then my ass smelled like flowers for two days.

joie

@Third Wave Housewife aaaaaand I've officially overshared on the Hairpin. I'm going to go drink wine kthanksbye.

hairspin

@heyits HAHAHAHA ok I am wayyyy late to this thread but this made me laugh because I know exactly what that product smells like and that is hilarious.

spoondisaster

Can I tell my All Time Favorite Lube Story? When I was 17 and first having sex with my first boyfriend, I stole some of my mom's lube and put it in a tiny (clean) Purell bottle. I called it Purell because the word "lube" was weird to me then, and when I asked my boyfriend to buy a big bottle of Purell for his birthday weekend, he actually bought an enormous bottle of hand sanitizer and expected it to work as lube.

bookbike

@Third Wave Housewife I just bought the lube on the internetz! yay! I can't wait for non-stinging lubrication! thanks for the tips.

george glass

I'm getting my first tattoo on Monday!! I have been thinking about it for 2 years. It's going to be rad . Any tattoo stories from you gals??

LeafySeaDragon

@george glass don't over moisturize it! that's as bad as not using any. i love my tattoos!

EpWs

@george glass I love it, what an awesome design! I have my one and only tattoo on my ribcage--plotted it for years, the whole nine yards. I was worried about the pain and hyped myself up for it, so when he started the outline, it was not nearly as bad as I had expected. (Of course, I had to open my mouth and go "This isn't so bad, I kind of like it!" and then it got much worse when the coloring stage came.) But it was a great experience, I had a really good artist, it took two sessions and I am so pleased with it.

Tips: Take some ibuprofen before you go! And get some Aquaphor to help with the healing process. I used it and had no problems healing up. Good luck!

Where are you getting it?

george glass

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Fleshy part of the hip, at about 6" wide - the flower on top of the top spool should peek over the waist of my pants. STOKED.

alphabiddycity

@george glass I LOVE that design SO SO MUCH!

george glass

@alphabiddycity OMG ME TOO, i have been geeking on it for like 3 weeks solid!

olivebee

@george glass I have many, many tattoos and I love getting them! They are super addicting, though, and my budget can't handle my want for them, so I usually only get one a year (gotta save up). My BIGGEST piece of advice, especially for getting large, time-consuming tats, is to get it done by an artist that is really nice. Honestly, you do NOT want to sit there in pain for a few hours with someone who does not give two shits about talking to you (or worse, is unfriendly/snippy with you). It took me till my fifth tat to find a nice artist, and now I go to her with all of mine. I did a 4.5 hour tat with her, and she kept asking me if I needed a break from the pain, and I honestly didn't even notice the pain because I was having so much fun talking to her.

Aaaanyways, have fun and I LOOOOVE your design!

redheaded&crazy

this week was a great week y'all! I got:

Five (5!) new nail polishes
Four (4!) nothing really but countdown
Three (3!!!!!) paycheques
Two (2!) ear piercings
One (1!) new phone

YAY this is the week I propped up the economy all by myself! Go consumerism!

Maybe I will buy four dresses to round that shit out.

Porn Peddler

@redheaded&crazy whooooah can we switch weeks please?

george glass

@redheaded&crazy Four blood oranges? They are in season-ish!

leastimportantperson

@redheaded&crazy Tell me more about these nail polishes. I'm tired of my limited selection, and while I got only one paycheck today, I'm interested in spending it NOW/before I finish peeling off all of my current manicure (a disappointing OPI for Sephora blue).

redheaded&crazy

also and most importantly, ZERO (0!!!!!!!!!!) positive pregnancy tests!!!!!!!!

the nail polishes are nice! It's $20 a month though for 3 products which to me seems pricey. They are in nice containers and they are definitely quality products and they are something-free which is apparently good. I'm doing it for 3 months to beef up my nail polish collection, and then I'll see from there whether I really want/need to continue doing it.

they do offer different options which is kind of neat, like you pick a style (e.g. american beauty which is apparently my style??) and you either get the products/colours for that, or you can switch to a different style which is kind of cool (which i did this month so i would get 3 nail polishes instead of 2 and some oil thing)

redheaded&crazy

@leastimportantperson this gift box thing comes through www.julep.com btw.

permanentbitchface

@redheaded&crazy This sounds fantastic! Where on your ears did you get your piercings?

redheaded&crazy

@Christina nowhere exciting! just the lobes. I feel like I can finally join the grown-ass lady club.

permanentbitchface

@redheaded&crazy Yay! I'm very excited for your newly pierced-ness, buying earrings is one of the best things ever.

atipofthehat

@redheaded&crazy

Oh thank goodness you're all right.

EpWs

@redheaded&crazy I am glad you are not pregnant! I am assuming you tried out all our period-summoning methods?

redheaded&crazy

@atipofthehat@Everpresent Wordsnatcher

I am also very very relieved that I am alright and not pregnant! I tried all recommended methods then ultimately draped myself in tampons coloured with a red crayola marker and danced a traditional anti-fertility tribal chant in the light of the full moon

that hasn't worked yet either BUT pregnancy test. negative. good times.

Xanthophyllippa

Anyone west of the Mississippi live within range of a Big 5 Sports and willing to do me a shopping-related favor? They are the only place in the U.S. selling my favoritest pair of running shoes ever (a style that I originally bought in 2010 and haven't seen since), and they are on SALE. I will gladly reimburse for the shoes, shipping, and gas - and maybe include some homemade jewelry - for anyone willing to buy me a pair and ship them across the country. Maybe even two pair, if they're still on sale.

Takers? You'd have a friend for life.

george glass

@Xanthophyllippa Have you tried calling the store and seeing if you can pay via credit card and just have them shipped?

Xanthophyllippa

@george glass Yes, and no, they don't ship.

EpWs

@Xanthophyllippa Who the hell doesn't ship, that is terrible! If I was out West I totally would, but I am pretty sure I'm at least three states away from a Big 5.

Xanthophyllippa

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I KNOW!! They don't even have a way to run credit cards by phone. How is this possible for a multi-state chain?!

Alibi Jones

@Xanthophyllippa I live near a Big 5 and know the pain of not being able to find your favorite running shoes. If you email me details (my user name at gmail) I'd be happy to give it a shot.

EpWs

@Xanthophyllippa Whaaaaaat? That is crazy to the max.

laurel

@Xanthophyllippa I'm within a mile of a Big 5. I can be Alibi Jones' backup if you need one. l4ur3lz at gmail.

Xanthophyllippa

@Alibi Jones @laurel Thank you!! I might take you up on that - I just got a note from a friend in CA, so if he doesn't ping back I'll drop one of you a line.

I'm on the couch with the lady friend. She loves the casserole I made for her and she smells like flowers. I heart her.

@serenityfound

@S. Elizabeth yaaaaaaay

PistolPackinMama

@S. Elizabeth :)

candybeans

@S. Elizabeth stoooories! Which casserole did you make? one from the wintry casserole series?

joie

@S. Elizabeth I'm so happy for you!!

phillystout

@S. Elizabeth I love this so so much.

EpWs

@S. Elizabeth Yay yay yay yay yay yay yay!

@candybeans Tater Tot Casserole! But instead of Cream of Horror, I used sweet potato bisque. LADIES, I made a casserole with sweet potato bisque. Color yourselves impressed. Then I slept in her bed wearing nothing but her big gray sweater and my nicest pair of lace underwear (Natori, bitches. Black lace with white embroidered flowers!).

SarahP

@S. Elizabeth FANCY UNDIES! I need more of those.

candybeans

@S. Elizabeth ha, you replying to all of my questions at once made me realize how terribly nosy I was being! Sounds like a terribly delicious/sweet/sexy/cozy ladyfriend time! S. Elizabeth wins the thread, as far as I can tell.

@candybeans I think my lady friend wins the thread! It was a super great weekend -- we went hiking, made dinner, went to a low key party for some of her classmates, cuddled, etc. It was great. I'm a huge fan. Also, casserole.

Danzig!

Since none of my social justice friends are around I'm just going to vent here and say, man, what the fuck is wrong with the Village Voice? I mean their investigative work is consistently badass but their editorial stance on child trafficking, while ostensibly reasonable, is such a disgusting conflict of interest.

They had a story this week about a Brooklyn teen being kidnapped, raped and pimped through Backpage.com and in their full disclosure notice about how Village Voice owns Backpage.com they also included a helpful link to how child sex trafficking is not a big enough deal to justify regulating Backpage.com

PistolPackinMama

@Danzig! Ugh. I KNOW. Really. REALLY?

Danzig!

@Danzig! D'ooooh it galls me so

PistolPackinMama

@Danzig! Since dealing with humanly-smuggled people is One of the Things I Do, I just do not buy that bullshit at all.

camanda

So I just remembered that I had quite the advenure in computing in the middle of this week.

In the last open thread I mentioned I was playing with Windows 8. Well, when I got tired of it, because it was making me mad re: this is not a tablet, I got rid of it, and apparently screwed up my bootloader, or something in that process. I would restart the computer and my Windows 7 Home Premium installation would hang forever between the loading screen and my desktop. It would only work if I Ctrl + Alt + Del'd and logged out and logged in again.

So, genius that I am, I said, hey, I have a Windows 7 Professional installation disc, I bet that would be better! It was awesome on my old laptop that had like three bytes of RAM and half a hertz of processor power. (In fairness to me, I came to this conclusion after trying logical things like restore points and repair discs.) FORGETTING ENTIRELY that I bought my copy digitally and so only have a 32-bit installation. Which my computer was very, very unhappy about, since none of my 64-bit drivers would work, obviously. Oh, that was a triumph, let me tell you.

So I put Windows 8 back on since it was the only 64-bit OS I had on disc at the moment. A friend offered to help and set me up with an ISO of Windows 7 Enterprise. I installed it aaaaaand it was the 32-bit installation. So I sobbed and then reinstalled Windows 8 and dealt with it until I was able to find a 64-bit ISO of Windows 7 Professional online the next day. And now I am happy again.

Of course, it couldn't be just that simple, because once I was back in Windows 7, I tried to restore the backup I made, and it was corrupt. Perfect! As were about half the files I copied manually to my external hard drive. (!@$@!%!%! Western Digital. I TRUSTED YOU.) The good thing is that I did not realize that the backup utility put a copy of my entire hard drive on the external drive. I just had to mount it like it was a physical hard drive and I was able to copy all of my personl files out of it by hand. So I sobbed some more, but they were tears of joy.

tl;dr I have never learned my lesson about playing around with my computers. I really need to stick a proper Linux distro on a second partition and play with that and leave my Windows installation alone.

Decca

@camanda I have no idea what you just said but it sounds impressive, so go you!

camanda

@Decca HAHAHA. It only happened because I'm an idiot, so I'm not sure how impressive it is, but thank you!

ELECTROMAGNETIC CHAOS

@camanda: Always always always play with other OS's via a distinct, other physical hard drive. The Windows boot loader is notorious for this kind of flakiness when you start adding other bootable OS's onto one drive.

camanda

@Too Much Internet Why do that when I can do this and have twice the fun?

george glass

Ooh also, going on a (hopefully huge) group bike ride at midnight tonight! Sharing all my details with internet strangerfriends!

redheaded&crazy

@george glass that is awesome. i want to do that (not in the current climate around these here parts) but in general.

tanglecat

Random Friday thought: Can someone explain to me why 'pinners say juicebox? Isn't that a slang term for a vagina, i.e., pussy? Why is it a cooler-for-girls-to-use insult than douchebag? Don't all these terms imply that to be like or near a vagina is a bad thing? What am I missing?

Porn Peddler

@tanglecat I've been wondering about this as well, but I assume it is the hairpin version of "man child" as in, man who does stupid childish shit out of line and needs either a time out or a juice box in order to calm the fuck down and quit being such an immature...well...juicebox.

candybeans

@Third Wave Housewife oh, i always thought we used "juicebox" because it sounded a little like "douchebag" in cadence and general mouthfeel, but wasn't as played out/insulting to ladyparts. I NEVER knew that it was a nickname for "vagina. Anyone else know its origin story on the Pin?

tanglecat

@candybeans http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=juicebox

gobblegirl

@tanglecat No, it's a replacement for douchebag precisely because douchebag implies vagina=bad. It's not a lady-junk euphemism, or at least not 'round these parts.

tanglecat

@gobblegirl Are you saying the urban dictionary misled me? OK, I believe you. I will say/read/write juicebox with total faith that it does not denigrate my ladyparts (another great 'pinner term).

candybeans

@tanglecat plus, how could a website that gave us heart/vagina ever use a term that denigrates said parts? {<3} God, that doesn't look right to me. Paging S.Elizabeth: I know you've used proper h/v notation elsewhere; is that correct?

MilesofMountains

@tanglecat I think it became popular here because it's a non-gendered, non-ablist, non-body-negative insult and there aren't many of those in English. I've never heard juicebox as slang for vagina, although "box" is.

warmsungilted

@candybeans For use on the Pin, there was a post a while back suggesting it as a replacement for douchebag. I guess the term was already in use elsewhere for something different, though? http://thehairpin.com/2011/05/juicebox

EpWs

@tanglecat I have never heard it as a slang term for anything other than "douchebag," and haven't heard it in slang anywhere outside the Hairpin. So feel free to use it around here with no guilt, we mean no harm by it!

@candybeans ({<3})

carolita

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I always thought "juicebox" was derogatory just because I always see really annoying little brats sucking on their juiceboxes. I figured that there were people who are such useless twits that they were no more intelligent or useful than a drink that's given to snotty brats to put something in their pieholes, it was the perfect insult. You know, like "asshat." What's an asshat? Do asses need hats? No. So if you're an asshat, you're useless.

Do I just have too much imagination? Now I feel silly.
