Be Careful Today

[D]ata from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health did show an increase in the number and severity of workplace accidents the Monday after the switch to daylight saving time.

Today is also the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts — stay doubly alert for marauding children hopped up on cookies and hand-churned butter.

@Maura Johnston This is apparently the one thing that's stopping me from having the month of all months. Mercury!!!

carolinaclay

Ha! Loved this :)@y

ArgosMama

Happy Birthday Girl Scouts!! !00 years of teaching girls how to be strong women.

saythatscool

@ArgosMama Pfft! I've been doing that at the local middle schools since I was like 15. Where's my trophy?

hallelujah

@ArgosMama you mean 100 years of teaching girls how to be LESBIAN ATHEIST ABORTION LOVING SEX ADDICTS!

PistolPackinMama

@ArgosMama

I've been doing that at the local middle schools since I was like 15. Where's my trophy?

... wait...

ArgosMama

@saythatscool , but you haven't been doing it for 100 years and you don't have a cute name like "scouts" for it. I would like to say that I am very happy for all the women who volunteer with girls because its super important no matter how you do it, or where you do it, or whether your organization has a name or not. Also anything that turns 100 is usually pretty awesome.

EpWs

@ArgosMama Last Tuesday: Oreos. Today: Girl Scouts. March of 1912 was a good month!

saythatscool

@ArgosMama I wouldn't describe it as "volunteer" work so much as a coaxing process, some internet stalking and a lot of time in court dealing with restraining orders.

PistolPackinMama

@saythatscool I am a bit confused at why you seem to be upset that... there isn't a national celebration for your 100-years-anniversary of whatever worthy work it is you do?

saythatscool

@PistolPackinMama No, sadly. But that's ok. I'm getting into a new line of work anyway. Starting today, I'm converting homeless people into wifi hotspots.

cherrispryte

@saythatscool Stay AHEAD of the trends! It keeps the police guessing.

PistolPackinMama

@saythatscool Are they going to have to stand still all the time, or will they be roving hotspots?

Ophelia

@saythatscool You'd get more recognition if you'd let them stop blurring out your face on To Catch a Predator. Just sayin'.

SarahP

To keep myself safe, I will keep work to a minimum today.

chrysopoeia

Aw man, now I just want my girl scout cookie order to come in!

As far as I'm concerned, they will always be Caramel deLites, not Samoas.

saythatscool

@chrysopoeia Racist

EpWs

@chrysopoeia Truth.

The Girl Scouts finally got me this weekend--I thought I had escaped their tasty clutches, but they were hanging out in the entrance of the grocery store. I gave them all my cash in exchange for two boxes of Caramel DeLites and a box of Thin Mints. Sneaky little adorable jerks.

SarahP

@chrysopoeia Same here! I feel super weird calling them "Samoas." Also, Tagalongs? Grasshoppers? Who thought these were a good idea? Single-word cookie names don't actually tell you what they are, and that's what I'm interested in.

chrysopoeia

@SarahP Exactly. If I'm paying upwards of four bucks to furtively shove an entire box of cookies in my mouth, I need DETAILS.

Lily Rowan

OMG, Caramel Delights are such a pale imitation of Samoas!! Ugh. I am sad to live in a place that uses the Bad Bakery -- ie, the one that doesn't make Samoas.

(You guys know that's the story, right? There are basically two bakeries that make all Girl Scout cookies, so it's just which one your local council uses.)

@SarahP The BOX tells you what they are! Hmph.

chrysopoeia

@Lily Rowan I grew up with Caramel deLites! The Girl Scouts are now simultaneously a part of AND destroying my childhood memories. I understand the name is trademarked but DAMN IT I want to taste NOSTALGIA.

ArgosMama

@Lily Rowan , The two bakery thing sucks and is really annoying. There are cookies on the west coast that we don't have on the east coast and they are the ones that make the names and or try to change the names. They are also the two places that make the prices so exorbitant.

chrysopoeia

@saythatscool And I just keep reading Tagalong as Tagalog and it's just crossing too many wires.

Lily Rowan

@chrysopoeia Your nostalgia is weird. Clearly, my nostalgia for Samoas is the correct nostalgia!

EpWs

@SarahP Exactly. Samoas could be anything. Caramel DeLites are, clearly, both caramel and deliteful.

The Lady of Shalott

@ArgosMama There are different cookies on each coast?????

MoonBat

@chrysopoeia. My Philippine friend lurves how we like to call our loved ones "Boo". Apparently that is a Tagalog word for "shit".

ArgosMama

@The Lady of Shalott , yes there are, when they come out with things like diet cookies and or bland cookies here they won't release them out there. I can't remember the cookie name, but the west coast got it and we never sold it.

Texian

@The Lady of Shalott Oh, yes, there are! There were even different types of cookies sold in different parts of Texas. Dulce de Leche* are big in San Antonio but we didn't get any here in Austin. Some troops participated in a cookie exchange on the down-low to get different flavors.

*if they are anything like the cake, I'm not sad about it.

SarahP

@ArgosMama Another reason the two-bakery thing sucks is that one of the bakeries makes some of the cookies vegan (thin mints, the peanut butter ones, and the lemon ones), the other puts whey into them. So I never know if I can have cookies until I get really close to the box (which I don't want to do, because them 'm close to girl scouts trying to sell me things).

New Hoarder

@SarahP Oh, then the Thin Mints I am currently eating for pre-lunch are NOT vegan. *chompchompchomp*

SarahP

@New Hoarder LET ME READ YOUR INGREDIENT LIST

PLEASE

MoonBat

The reading at mass yesterday was about Jesus driving the merchants from the temple. The we file out to a throng of little Catholic girlscouts selling cookies under the portico.
Freezer full of thin mints, FTW.

EpWs

@MoonBat Everything about this is perfect. (Also I will fight anyone who tries to store their Thin Mints anywhere OTHER than the freezer)

MoonBat

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher: There are only two places to put thin mints; freezer, and face.

EpWs

@MoonBat I like your thinking and am interested in subscribing to your newsletter.

PistolPackinMama

@MoonBat So much hilarious irony.

A friend of mine was saying she thought the American Girl Scout Cookie phenomenon was perhaps upsetting because something something capitalism.

And yes, shilling cookies. Can get annoying. But. We paid for a troop trip to Berlin on the back of scout cookie sales when I was in 5th grade. The Girl Scout Hut in Berlin at the time was a large, beautiful mansion that he US military was holding in perpetuity until the family from whom it had been confiscated in 1938 could come back to claim it. When it came under US care in the 1945, some bigshot German military person or other was living there. I doubt anyone has come forward to assert ownership of that property.

And I will never, ever forget that experience, ever.

So you know. Shilling. And ethics and history and tragedy and such.

MoonBat

PistolPackinMama, you were a much better wee capitalist than I was! Castle in Berlin? Awesome! I was happy with our week in the treehouse cabins!

PistolPackinMama

@MoonBat Well, it was a mansion, not a castle, in an upper class neigborhood.

And we lived in what was then W. Germany and took the duty troop train. So it's not like we had to work all that hard to make it happen. But still.

MoonBat

@PistolPackinMama Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. Sounds like a lot of wee German capitalist fun to me!
Disclosure: I've already trademarked "Wee German Capitalists" as a name for my band, should I happen to spontaneously develop any musical talent.

tortietabbie

I didn't get any girl scout cookies this year. :( Where are they hiding?!

Megasus

@tortietabbie I have never had any come to my place since I have moved out of the parents!

EpWs

@tortietabbie Around my area, they tend to congregate in grocery store entrances.

cherrispryte

@tortietabbie
Answer 1) In my belleh.
Answer 2) http://www.girlscoutcookies.org/ - put in your zip code and they'll tell you where and when to get 'em!

Megasus

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I only sometimes see Air Cadets, that's it.

Ophelia

@cherrispryte Ooh, brilliant on the zip code thing. Who knew the girl scouts were so e-savvy?

hallelujah

@cherrispryte OH MY GOD. I was just stressing sooo hard about where I could possibly procure cookies like right this second. You're a lifesaver!

wharrgarbl

@tortietabbie They have been all over the place around me. It's so adorable when they're all "Would you like to buy some cookies?" and you say "Yes, yes I would!" and their little faces light up, then fall a little because now they have to figure out change for a ten. (The ones around here have been pretty little, so making change is still a big deal for them.)

EpWs

@wharrgarbl Yes! I love being able to make their day better. The ones I bought from were...7ish? Maybe? I had them do some math for me ("I would like two boxes of Caramel DeLites and one box of Thin Mints, please. How much would that be?"), partially because they need to learn (education!) and partially because my brain is getting all soft and mushy and I no longer trust my math skills. Hooray for happy Girl Scouts!

EpWs

@Ophelia They are super tech savvy and have a badge to prove it!
@Megan Patterson Air Cadets?

wharrgarbl

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher The ones I've been buying from have been around 5 or 6, I think. The tables have had like a roving swarm, with the younger girls staying close to the moms who are guarding the cookies and cashbox and the older girls fanning out to make sure everyone who maybe didn't hear them the first time gets a chance to buy them some cookies. If you're heading to the tables deliberately instead of being lured in by the Cookie Sirens, you wind up buying from the younger ones, who just seem so little, with the moms hovering in case they miss a five or try to give you a handful of quarters.

Ophelia

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Cool! The other day, I babysat for friends of mine, who were leaving their baby for the first time (they were literally going to dinner 3 blocks away, and baby was asleep). The mom was totally fine, but dad was kind of freaking out? So I told him not to worry, I'd gotten my babysitting badge in Girl Scouts (in, like, 1991). I was joking around, but that actually made him feel better! Hooray for badges both retro and new!

Megasus

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher It might be a Canadian thing? It's sort of like Girl Guides/Scouts, except it mis more like a baby Air Force (I am not even kidding, you do eventually get to fly a glider when you are old enough).

EpWs

@Megan Patterson@facebook Fly a glider, you say? I want to be an Air Cadet!

chicken&telephone

You are also at risk of spending lots and lots of time on The Hairpin. It's science!

MoonBat

Edith wants us to be safe, but we just wanna talk about cookies.

ImASadGiraffe

@MoonBat Speaking of birthdays and cookies, the birthday cake Oreos are AMAZEBALLS.

EpWs

@ImASadGiraffe We were just talking about those at my office! Something about SPRINKLES IN THE OREOS? I must have them.

ImASadGiraffe

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher There are sprinkles in the filling and the filling tastes different...as in BETTER. I want to eat the whole package but I'm trying to make them last longer since I know they are limited edition.

MoonBat

@ImASadGiraffe Ohhhhh, man, you are so wrong for this!!!
*going shopping right after work, sugar coma soon to follow*

EpWs

@ImASadGiraffe Can you stockpile and freeze some?

ImASadGiraffe

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher I got the last package at my local Walgreens, gonna have to check Target later...do Oreos keep in the freezer?

EpWs

@ImASadGiraffe Internet says yes! I would maybe put them in an additional freezer bag just to be safe.

ImASadGiraffe

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Double-bagging it, can't be too careful I suppose.

Megasus

@ImASadGiraffe I always put the special chocolate covered ones that come out at Christmas in the freeze fine.
Also, I bought a crostada (it's kind of like a pie/tart) and it is freaking AMAZING.

ImASadGiraffe

@MoonBat Sugar coma has hit. I've eaten 2/3 sleeves of the package. #helpme

MoonBat

@ImASadGiraffe
Can I assume "#helpme" is your express permission to eat the rest of the oreos?

ImASadGiraffe

@MoonBat Yes, please take them away and eat the rest of them for me.

MoonBat

@ImASadGiraffe Ok, but please know that only because of my deep and abiding love for giraffes, will I make this sacrifice.

ImASadGiraffe

@MoonBat Giraffes really are the best.

Any One Ninja Plot

I was about to be snarky and say that I was smart in planning on being away for a long weekend and taking today off work -- until I realized that I probably do not want the airline employees responsible for my well being to be affected by this.

VolcanoMouse

Yay, Happy Birthday, Girl Scouts!

When I worked at a Girl Scout camp, we would get the cookies that hadn't sold in our council to hand out as snacks. The good flavors were jealously guarded by both staff and campers. Extreme tactics ranged from 'trying to split the last remaining Tagalong into seven equal pieces' to 'stealing Thin Mints and eating them alone in a kayak on the lake where no one else can get at them.' (I apologize for nothing.)

whizz_dumb

I almost injured myself making my bed this morning, which I usually don't do. Getting some pretty circumstantial mixed-messages from you, Hairpin, make up your mind about making up my mind.

ImASadGiraffe

@whizz_dumb #LAMOBAAIO ?

whizz_dumb

@ImASadGiraffe Laughing at my own bed askew and inside out ?

ImASadGiraffe

@whizz_dumb Let's All Make Our Beds And Almost Injure Ourselves :)

whizz_dumb

haha way off I'm not good at that game. Making my bed is pretty great. I come home from work and I'm still startled for a second, "Whoa what kind-of clean person snuck in here and -- Oh yeah, I'm doing it! It's working!"

Nutmeg

I almost bought Girl Scout cookies on Sunday in Harvard Square because there was a little girl wearing a giant Thin Mint box and dancing around, but by the time I finished my phone conversation they were already packed up and leaving.

It's probably good because the last time I bought Thin Mints (to "bring to a meeting," haha good one) I ate 2/3 of the box within two days (my roommate ate the rest).

amelia!

I was leaving work yesterday and crossed paths with a woman carrying a case of Thin Mints and I swear to god I was THISCLOSE to punching her in the face and running away with her sweet, sweet, minty treats.
