Today in New Madonna and M.I.A. Music Videos

Not only is Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'" a drab song, the video is essentially saying "now you don't have to watch the Super Bowl." And if you plan to tune in for the halftime show to maybe catch a glimpse of the ghosts of Madonnas past, they're here, too: Madge crowdsurfs a team of football players, recalling "Material Girl," and her top-notch backup singers'/cheerleaders' lacy ensembles harken back to "Like a Virgin." It’s too bad M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj are stuck with minor supporting roles, because they only have time to drop the obligatory “Roman” and “swag," and their verses fall flat. The fact that Nicki's rocking an Adidas bustier alone calls for a verse longer than five seconds.

The best thing about this video is how checked out M.I.A. looks — she's like a kid who got dragged into the school play because her aunt was directing. “Fine. But I won’t like it.” And just to make it clear, she ends her verse with “I don’t give a shit.”

Also out today is M.I.A.’s "Bad Girls" video, directed by Romain Gavras (who also directed her controversial "Born Free" video), and the reworked single from last year's Vicki Leekx gets super-stylish and badass-cinematic in the desert. Car stunts! Shiny suits! Sandal skidding! (Is there a proper term for this?) I also love how M.I.A.'s just chillin' atop a tilted car, filing her nails like NBD.

Blanca Méndez loves that song!

I will say that Madonna's hair in this video is so flowy and perfect; it's my dream hair.

Madonna is a true artist, but she hasn't had a hit since 1991.@v

Abe Sauer

Thanks for reminding me how much I hate Ohio State, Madonna!

@Abe Sauer O-H!

It sounds like Pink's "Please Don't Leave Me." That's not a good thing.

Pound of Salt

At this point I just want to see a Madonna video where she goes for a colonoscopy, or something. That's what people over 50 do, I think?

@Pound of Salt On the Confessions tour, she included her x-rays from her broken collar bone in the video projections.

@Pound of Salt Generally - as a Dude - I enjoy reading Hairpin comments because they are exactly the opposite of your comment. Lay off the age BS and just concentrate on the mediocre song.

Pound of Salt

@OzoneDude Eh, fair enough.

@Pound of Salt well, as a drunk chick, i'm going to ask you to lay off the holier-than-thou manarchist 'tude and shove it, thanks.

@Pound of Salt maybe there's some kind of middle ground. she can sing about colonoscopies and bone density tests AND shake her thang.
although that weird baby thing was weird. it was like LOOK AT ME, I'M STILL FERTILE.

I am embarrassed for her. Madonna, age with some grace.

@myrna.minkoff Seriously. "Luvin?" My god.

@myrna.minkoff I She kind of reminds me of Regina George's mom in this video. "I'm not like a regular mom. I'm a cool mom."

@applestoapples Also what is going on with the breastfeeding doll-baby??

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher #dollnews

@applestoapples Wasn't that Amy Poehler?

I am ambivalent at this point about Madge. HOWEVER I am completely in love with M.I.A. She absolutely fascinates me. I may need to seek professional help.

@Techmo ME TOO. And M.I.A's unbridled snark/apathy (snarkpathy?) in this video is making it even better.

Oh my I just watched the Madonna video. Yikes. I am not looking forward to that during the Super Bowl. Does anyone know a way to just make Prince do the halftime show every year? Like if we made all the players wear purple uniforms would that do it?

@Techmo Ravens vs. Vikings every year! (I don't even know if that's possible-- are they in the same conference?)

@Techmo That would totally work! They are in different conferences. Plus isn't prince from Minneapolis? Ok, now I have two new teams to root for next year.

Whoever did all of Madonna's digital retouching/makeup in this video deserves a raise.

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher This is a serious question, but is that even her body? It looks like her head was CG'ed onto someone else's body. It's not that I don't believe she can still look like that at her age but there's something weird about the way it looks.

There's definitely some digital weirdness going on with her here.

@Eden Yeah, there is absolutely some weird going on here. I honestly didn't look at her body much because HER FACE.

I had high hopes for this album when I first heard she was working on it, and that she was working with Orbit again. Those high hopes might have been for naught. I have a sinking feeling this album will fill me with as much rage as Hard Candy did. This song sounds like it was written by an 8th grader.

Nebraska Jones

I'm kinda ehhh on "Bad Girls" as a song but the visuals work really well with it.

@Nebraska Jones Yeah, the video's a lot of fun. I think the song's about a minute too long, though. I'm pretty ambivalent on M.I.A., though.

To be fair, MIA always kind of looks like she doesn't give a shit.

The message of the video seems to be "I have so much money, I can keep M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj around all day just for decoration."

@HillsideHoyden Let's be honest here, we all would if we could.

Christopher Martin@twitter

But now we don't have to watch the superbowl, right?

I don't understand why Nicki & M.I.A. are in this video at all, seeing as they get NOTHING to do. Other points of confusion: why are gangsters shooting at Madge, what the hell with the creepy dancing robots, and how does she stay so fit if football players carry her around everywhere.

...although that part where she walks sideways along the building is kind of awesome.

The Madonna vid (well, without the strange Marilyn Monroe scene) is like a cracked-out Old Navy commercial. Scary! Her hair looks great though.

Does anyone else wonder what Goldie Hawn is doing now that Madonna stole her hair?

Why was she breastfeeding a prep-school doll?

So many questions. Well, two.

"Every record sounds the same." - you said it, Madonna.

As an Old (see? I'm even late to the game), I can't help but commend her for shakin' her thang, even at the scrutiny of the youngs (and olds!). I've never looked as good as she does, and probably never will. Girl - you do you! xoxo Madge!

Augh, those anime masks. So creepy.
