Things to Do in the Winter

Three parts crop circle, two parts corn maze, one part snowman, one part beach stick-drawnings: Sonja Hinrichsen's "Snow Drawings" in Colorado. (More pictures here.)

This is cruel. God. You know that we don't have any snow, Hairpin. Just rub it in a little more. Ugh.

Third Wave Housewife

@LaFabuliste Came here to say this. Ugh. This winter was terrifying.

Chanticleer

@Third Wave Housewife I saw crocuses blooming last weekend. In upstate New York. In February.

Third Wave Housewife

@Chanticleer (if you're from upstate ny I must do the obligatory OMG ARE YOU IN THE FINGER LAKES/WESTERN NY thing because I wish there were pin-ups in my city)

Chanticleer

@Third Wave Housewife Whoa, yes I am! We should meet up and celebrate our unseasonable weather! I'm at myusername at gmail if you want to email me. (Any other Finger Lakesian lurkers also welcome.)

liznieve

@LaFabuliste WHAT'S WINTER? NEW YORK CITY IS DYING TO KNOW. Ughhhhhh, all I wanted is some city street noise muffled by freshly fallen snow and that crunchy sound of new snow under boots, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? (Apparently.)

anachronistique

@LaFabuliste It's 57 degrees here today. I shelled out for snow boots! I could've used that money for booze!

redheaded&crazie

@anachronistique my poor sad snow boots. they're so cute! I was looking forward to wearing them, like at least once ya know?

i suppose there are worse things than having a mild winter. I GUESS.

frigwiggin

@LaFabuliste I'm in California and it's supposed to be 75 today. I hate the cold more than most people, but I can't even enjoy this because I'm frightened at what it indicates summer is going to be like. We're all going to just burst into flame...

The Everpresent Wordsnatcher

There's a Winter Boyfriend joke in here somewhere...

Lily Rowan

Wow, that was exactly the soothing thing I needed to look at right now. Thanks. I should go walk a labyrinth over lunch.

phlox

I am going up north this weekend where there is supposed to be snow!

oh, disaster

I loathe winter, but I love walking in snow. Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.

OhShesArtsy

I like snow like I like dogs, swimming pools, and children. They are sooooo much better when they are someone else's mess that I can just play with sometimes.

Scarlettb

This reminds me so strongly of embroidery - I feel like the texture of her footprints look just like the little stitches you get when you use a sewing machine to embroider.

dabbyfanny

@Scarlettb yes! That's what I was seeing, too! Also, if Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy eloped with the Snow Queen, Sonja would be their love child.

The Lady of Shalott

Oh my GOD I AM SO SICK OF SNOW AND WINTER. There is a solid foot of snow here on the ground here, as well as a good thick sheet of ice all over most parking lots. We have icicles and the outdoor skating pond is in good shape. We have had the constant subzero temperatures for weeks. We have had the windstorms. We have had IT ALL. And it snowed MORE LAST NIGHT.

I WANT SPRING, NOW, PLEASE.

The Everpresent Wordsnatcher

@The Lady of Shalott COME SOUTH, LADY. Apparently as soon as you cross the border everything gets alarmingly warm. We've got crocuses and daffodils in Kentucky! It's going to be 66 tomorrow! Come visit!

The Lady of Shalott

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher It was just above freezing today and I got really excited because I was like HEY, IT'S GOING TO BE SO NICE!!!

OhShesArtsy

@The Everpresent Wordsnatcher Yes!

It's actually a bit chilly today, it's a rainy 46! This weekend will be a nice, sunny, 60's-range sort of weekend. I'm planning a picnic!

Third Wave Housewife

@The Lady of Shalott exactly how far north does one have to go before it is actually winter? because I live in a city that is usually buried in snow from November to March and there is NOTHING HERE

Barracuda

@The Lady of Shalott Where are you? I'm thinking Anchorage, maybe?

The Lady of Shalott

@Barracuda New Brunswick, northeast of Maine. We get a shit-ton of snow, usually, because all the weather systems from the East Coast headed north end up getting crammed into the Bay of Fundy, where it is cold enough and they dump snow all over us. Regardless, it is cold and very bleak.

If you feel nostalgic for snow you can look at this webcam of my city: http://www.fred-ezone.ca/webcams/?cam=lib

Barracuda

@The Lady of Shalott I got excited for a minute there as one of my good friends who I visit from time to time lives in Brunswick, Maine.... Alas, not the same.

She loves, Loves LOVES the snow. Gets a little jokingly prickly if we get snow here in DC and she does not.

meetapossum

This is sort of appropriate, since I just booked tickets to Colorado for May, and my friend has just informed me that I will be present for "mud season." I don't like snow nor do I know how to ski, but I was hoping it would be warm and dry and pleasant for hiking. Alas!

TheSkyGirl

Something about the music made me think of Mister Rogers. And that made me happy.
