Must... Tweet. Can't... Resist.

Tweeting or checking emails may be harder to resist than cigarettes and alcohol, according to researchers who tried to measure how well people could resist their desires.

They even claim that while sleep and sex may be stronger urges, people are more likely to give in to longings or cravings to use social and other media.

"Mmm, a cocktail, some sex, then a cigarette (of course), followed by sleep would be awesome right now, but I haven't left my cave in ages. Maybe someday there will be a way out of this lonely, lonely prison of my own making, if only an escape into an imaginary world full of friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends who are into having sex IRL."

I thank you not to refer to my tastefully furnished dungeon as a cave. Potterverse reference. RELEVANT GIF.

Is tweeting or checking emails going to give me lung cancer, a hangover, tobacco-stench, or cirrhosis? I need a link to this study. Was the reward for resisting the temptation equal in all case (like, you get a cookie if you don't do this for an hour?), or what?

Marzipan

@wharrgarbl Yeah, I'm so confused. I don't get it. These things aren't in any way equal.

Like, sex and sleep and drinking and smoking are all situational, they have a lot of situational limits on them. Like, right now I'm at work, and I'm on the hairpin, so in that sense: I sucessfully resisted the temptation to drink/smoke/sex/sleep, but NOT the social media temptation. But because I'm at work, I can't really go to sleep or have sex or drink or smoke, even if I want to do those more (and I do).

I mean, it's just, there is so much less reason to resist twittering, or whatever. The bar is much lower.

How did they test this? "Here is an attractive, available man who is interested in you. Here is a bottle of liquor. Here is a computer. RESIST. It's for science."

P.S. Please don't hate me

@Marzipan
I bet that is how they did the study! Okay, I'm going to start calling the number of every ad on the train looking for research volunteers.

Shara

@wharrgarbl Press release on this study from The Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/feb/03/twitter-resist-cigarettes-alcohol-study
... and now I'm going to go back to compulsively checking my (social psychology researcher) ex-boyfriend's fb page to see how long it takes him to post this link. And then I'm going to pour a glass of wine and smoke. Dammit.

wharrgarbl

@Shara According to that article, it was real-life risk/reward scenarios, so...yeah. Something that's cheap or free on a per-use basis with pretty much no risk of negative consequences vs. things that are relatively expensive on a per-use basis and carry either a risk of negative consequences (immediate and lasting) or a moderate opportunity-cost. I am unsurprised by this.

I can't not see that photo as one hand holding a nutcracker. I can process that it's two hands holding phones at different distances but I know I'm going to scroll up and my brain will be like "Hey! Check out that nutcracker!"

likethestore

@Vicky Johnson Thanks to you I just realized that it WASN'T a nutcracker.

jackietgregory

They're so right. I feel pained if I don't get to check my email every few minutes. Someone might have liked my last Pinterest pin! Someone might have commented on my most recent style blog post! PEOPLE MIGHT BE PAYING ATTENTION TO ME AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW IT.

Paradoxically, the internet makes me feel both less and more lonely at the same time. People on the internet validate my interests, which just makes me want to seek more validation and love from a wider audience. LOVE ME. LOOOOVE MEEEEEEEEEEE

Nutmeg

Wait, what? I have gone days forgetting to check my email (I keep getting reminders about student loans) but I have been known to tell my manfriend that I'm game for sex, but I'm too tired to put in any effort so "I'm just going to lie here while you do me, cool?"

Waiting

this one hits close to home... I'm so pathetic!
