LeafySeaDragon

i just marathoned this show on netflix, i love it! i hope in s2 thomas gets his ass handed to him.

atipofthehat

@LeafySeaDragon

If you think Thomas should get hurt in S2, raise your hand!

Heh heh.

ballbiscuit

@atipofthehat Good One!

whoneedslight

@LeafySeaDragon
I did this on MLK day, in my Forever Lazy on the sofa. The entire first season. Best PBS bender ever.

two-cute

@LeafySeaDragon

thomas and o'brien are my fav characters-- not in a "love to hate" kind of way, but in a "would take smoke breaks with" kind of way. and i was really surprised when i realized most people don't feel the same, which i guess says a lot about my personality? as in: i am actually a horrible person inside? either that or we're just too cool and y'all are just jealous

melis

@shhhhk I trust that you can see yourself out.

LeafySeaDragon

@whoneedslight i'm still heartbroken that cranford is over. as much as i love DA, there is no one for me to crush on.

dtowngirl

@shhhhk I was literally shaking my fist at the screen and muttering "damn you O'Brien." I'm in the "love to hate" category

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@dtowngirl uhhhh how many times did I unintentionally yell "BITCH!!!" at the screen due to O'Brien's antics? A lot. A lot is the answer to that question.

Veronica Mars is smarter than me

@Veronica Mars is smarter than me
Also? *Sweep the leg!*

jennifa

Um- Spoiler alert!

one cow.

@jennifa Thank you! I came down here to check first!

jennifa

@one cow. I don't think anything was truly spoiled (I stopped watching at 2minutes), but still plenty of scenes I wasn't familiar with. And I am extremely familiar with the Dowager.

Katie Scarlett

@jennifa Yes, thank you! I wanted to check first too. I don't want spoilers but UGH, I WANNA SEE THE SHIT THAT SHE SAYS SO BAD!!!

the ghost of amy lee

I love Maggie Smith! The Dowager Countess is basically an English Lucille Bluth.

ohpioneer

@the ghost of amy lee YES!!!

melis

"I don't care for Sibyl."

Dancercise

@melis
You want your corset to buckle, Edith, not your chair.

melis

EDITH: Hi, Grandma! Good news, I have the entire afternoon free.

DOWAGER COUNTESS: Oh, really? Did "nothing" cancel?

atipofthehat

@melis

"Sybil"

!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!????????

candybeans

@the ghost of amy lee oh, my lord, I was JUST THINKING that she reminded me of Lucille Bluth!! The little, subtle movements of her head, and the glances! So wonderful.

melis

DOWAGER COUNTESS: I seem to remember a certain young man who completely fell apart two weeks ago when I taped over the Nova special with the girl he liked on it.

LORD GRANTHAM: That was Matthew. And that's my point.

alphabiddycity

@the ghost of amy lee I thought I was brilliant and was going to make the best tumblr ever but then I found arresteddownton.tumblr.com, who totally incepted my idea, but do it so so awesomely.

melis

DOWAGER COUNTESS: How much could a banana cost? Ten dollars?

MATTHEW: You've never been to a supermarket, have you?

melis

@atipofthehat y u mad bro

candybeans

@alphabiddycity Oh, that tumblr is a little too much for my heart. There's a lot of squealing happening in Candybeans Central right now.

annebee

@alphabiddycity Thank you sooooo much for telling us about that!

atipofthehat

@melis

Jean Brodie: There's very little for me to say, Miss Mackay in the face of your extraordinary prejudice and hostility.

Miss Mackay: Miss Brodie, I am not asking you to say anything. I am asking... demanding... that you put your signature, your own signature, on a letter of resignation which I have prepared for you.

Jean Brodie: I will not resign.

Miss Mackay: If you will not resign, you will force me to dismiss you.

Jean Brodie: I will not resign and you will not dismiss me, Miss Mackay. You will not use the excuse of that pathetic, that humorous document to blackmail me! Mr. Lowther, you are a witness to this. Miss Mackay has made totally unsupported accusations against my name and yours. If she has one authentic shred of evidence, just one, let her bring it forth! Otherwise, if one more word of this outrageous calumny reaches my ears, I shall sue! I shall take Miss Mackay to the public courts and I shall sue the trustees of Marcia Blaine, if they support her. I will not stand quietly by and allow myself to be crucified by a woman whose fetid frustration has overcome her judgment! If scandal is to your taste, Miss Mackay, I shall give you a feast!

Miss Mackay: Miss Brodie!

Jean Brodie: I am a teacher! I am a teacher, first, last, always! Do you imagine that for one instant I will let that be taken from me without a fight? I have dedicated, sacrificed my life to this profession. And I will not stand by like an inky little slacker and watch you rob me of it and for what? For what reason? For jealousy! Because I have the gift of claiming girls for my own. It is true I am a strong influence on my girls. I am proud of it! I influence them to be aware of all the possibilities of life... of beauty, honor, courage. I do not, Miss Mackay, influence them to look for slime where it does not exist! I am going. When my class convenes, my pupils will find me composed and prepared to reveal to them the succession of the Stuarts. And on Sunday, I will go to Cramond to visit Mr. Lowther. We are accustomed, bachelor and spinster, to spend our Sundays together in sailing and walking the beaches and in the pursuit of music. Mr. Lowther is teaching me to play the mandolin. Good day, Miss Mackay.

travelmugs

Dowager Countess: I asked God to take anything from Matthew to keep him from going to war.
Cousin Isobel: God's not going to answer a call from you.

travelmugs

@candybeans Blandvinia.

sarabara

@melis "Oh, hello, Mr. Mosely. Here's the prize for the winning blooms - No, I'm withholding it. Look at me, getting off."

candybeans

@sarabara There goes Matthew, spending all his money getting Eggvinia glittered up for the Servants' Ball...

annepersand

@atipofthehat Thank you, you've just determined that the next book I read is the Muriel Spark compendium that's been languishing on my shelves.

atipofthehat

@annepersand

Excellent choice, Miss.

myrna.minkoff

@sarabara I do believe a Downton Abbey + Arrested Development Tumblr is in order. Ah, if only I had the time and creativity!

dtowngirl

@atipofthehat "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" is one of the most wonderful books ever, and I loved the movie! (Usually hate movie versions of books I love)

Toby Jug

...

"Promise?"

candybeans

@Toby Jug THIS.

CheeseLouise

@Toby Jug And the little smile on her face. The best.

Dancercise

I am disappointed in the lack of swivel chair.

LMac

@Dancersize That's what I was waiting for. Pretty good, but not enough swivel.

tortietabbie

@Dancersize "I'm a good sailor!"

candybeans

YESSSSSS TO ALL but extra points go to: "One way or another, everyone goes down the aisle with half the story hidden," and to that look at the very end. Maggie Smith for Supreme World Leader.

Bittersweet

@candybeans: Lalalalalala I'm not listening, I'm not listening...

Love,
Spokesman for the PBS US Legal Watchers Brigade

candybeans

@Bittersweet I don't think that quote spoils anything... I mean, even "honest" watchers know that Mary is hunting for a husband and has a checkered past that makes it a little tricky for her to find a perfect one, right? (disclaimer: I don't remember what that quote was referring to, but I'm guessing Mary's marital woes)

tortietabbie

@candybeans Also I'm pretty sure that was from season 1?

redonion

@tortietabbie Yep, totally season 1 - I'm a US Legal Watcher and I remember that statement.

Alixana

So YouTube's autocaptioning software is rocky at best, but had a particularly hard time with Dame Maggie. I doubt that Lady Grantham has ever uttered any of the following phrases:

"wanted two pieces of the defendant"
"barbecue restructured which is growing in a different route"
"osama stupid"
"container banging for wildlife"
"anthropometric mansions"
"he was doing his mother"
"stormwater protest was cheap refuges"

atipofthehat

@Alixana

Those are all spoilers for season 77!

Alixana

@atipofthehat At the rate they are burning through the years ... yeah, you might be right!

sarabara

@Alixana lolz passage of time in Downton is the SILLIEST. It should bother me but it doesn't.

travelmugs

@sarabara It should bother me more than it does, but what ages are the daughters?!?

sarabara

@travelmugs I think they mentioned Sybil was 21 when she was about to Run Away Forever...she must've started off mighty young. Mary, meanwhile, is practically a shriveled hag in marrageability terms.

Faintly Macabre

@sarabara Yeah, my sister and I were complaining about that the other night. How, in the better part of a decade, are these storylines not concluded yet?

Alixana

@sarabara But that doesn't make ANY sense, because when Cora was pregnant it was said that she "hadn't been pregnant in 18 years." I latched on to that to figure out their ages at that point, but that makes Sybil 23 by 1919! I think I should just let it go.

tbird

@Alixana Ah, but I think that could just easily mean she had been pregnant 18 years ago, but miscarried previously too.

Alixana

@tbird Ooohhh, that's true! But doesn't that make Sybil 18 at the max? It doesn't allow her to be younger.

Also, it made sense for Sybil to be 18ish at the time, since didn't she have her debut the summer they were in London? I thought that happened at around 18.

gtrachel

That woman can wear a hat.

tortietabbie

I've been waiting for someone to do this so I could watch it and be amused! I am SO amused!

Megano!

Now that Lucille Bluth has been mentioned there totally needs to be a show where Lady Grantham and Lucille Bluth live in an apartment together OR give ladies makeovers. I would watch the shit out of either.

whizz_dumb

Went into it reluctantly, but after watching s1e1 last night I'm hooked. If I wasn't sick and in need of sleep I woulda cranked through a couple more episodes. Also just discovered the (also British) Sherlock miniseries. Good stuff.

GoToaster

No "So put that in your pipe and smoke it!"? Seriously?

Damn you PBS.org and BBCAmerica.com; where can I watch more of series 2?
