"Girl Walk / All Day," Chapter One
The folks at "creative and collective" organization Wild Combination made an epic music video for the entirety of Girl Talk's All Day album, and it's being released in 12 parts, the first out today. There's a pop-and-locking Ryan Gosling-lookin'-ass dude and extreme ballet! The sequence starting at 3:20 really speaks to me. [via]

Hey, it's Grace's tutor from The Good Wife! …anyone?
SHUT UP ARE YOU SERIOUS?! This is pretty amazing. Gregg Gillis, why do you have to be so amazing??
all of the stuff with anne marsen looks suuper familiar to me. I feel like I've seen music videos with her dancing before – on a ferry too! am I crazy. I don't know.
@redheadedandcrazy that was the trailer for this whole project, yep
All Day is such a great album but this is… I don't know. I do like ballet weirdo, she looks like she is having fun. Also, that guy is "Ryan Gosling lookin'-ass?" Mmmm…no.
I like it better after looking at the kickstarter vid, actually.
Yeah, don't really enjoy watching that girl dance. too much acting, not enough being.
@hairspin Somehow I feel like she and the choreography–or maybe it's the choreo itself–never quite click together. I feel like somehow she looks really awkward almost all the time, even though she's clearly capable of doing amazing things with her body.
@miwome Right, I sorta feel like a lot of the dancing is the same stuff that I do by myself in my house under the category of "awkward weirdo moves". I just KNOW that she can do so much better!
@hairspin But that's why I love her so much!
The imperfections in her dancing are fascinating when combined with the acting. Like the way Johnny Cash or Billie Holiday sing with voices that are chipped & rough at times – the expressiveness reaches me so much more than perfect pipes would.
@Floorcake Right? I don't know, I think it's awesome- she's clearly able to do amazing things with her body but she's having so. much. fun. with this video! And she's adorable! I'm excited to see the rest. I hope they're all posted on the Hairpin!
@Floorcake Right! I started out thinking 'mm, I dunno', but I think that was the point? Like, something is going on with her (character) and she hasn't worked out what it is, and she's still half trying to do ballet but figuring out new things to do with it. Although, my favourite bit is at the end when she's in the crowd – I have definitely felt like that before, blissfully thrilled on a wonderful day in the city, in a crowd of people trying not to catch my eye. That and the joyful skipping over things. Charming.
I need more Daisuke Omiya in my life. NEEEEEEEEED. How is there not even a wikipedia page on this man?
Also, that dance sequence at 3:20 really spoke to me too. I've imagined doing similar things in yoga classes before, but with less dancing and more swearing.
@RK Fire Dude, no kidding, Daisuke Omia is HOT HOT HOT.
@The Lady of Shalott MOAR THE GENTLEMAN PLEASE. He can gentle me anytime.
@The Lady of Shalott: I think I'm realizing that Daisuke Omiya fits into one of the many "types" of men that I'm attracted to. Other examples include Lee Byung Hun and Chan Kwok-Kwan. Svelte East Asian men with hair on the long side, goatees and a dapper sense of style?
@miwome: YES
@miwome Hell yes. I'd let him be gentle to me. (Or not, as the case may be. Daisuke!!! Call me!!!)
@miwome I was so disappointed when there was no tap dancing in this video – hopefully there's more of him in the next one!
@RK Fire That bit just before the sequence when the teacher corrects her, and she barely holds back the sneering hatred as the teacher leaves. Mmm, familiar!
How much do I love that she stole the jacket, too. (I totally had that jacket, only mine was blue and yellow. And my grandma made it.)
There also exists on youtube a series of like 13 videos for one of the older Girl Talk albums where the OG music videos or live performances are chopped together to match the music. I'm a big fan of playing them all in a row as background AV at the dance parties I have at my house.
Its still a dance party if its just me, right?
@leon.saintjean toats. I have those parties all the time.
@leon.saintjean The first time I discovered those youtube videos I was SO excited. And, yes, of course it counts even by yourself, because I can guarantee someone else is having a solo dance party simultaneously. (i.e. me)
OH MA GAD THIS WILL BE SO AWESOMEEEEEEEEEE
I met Greg Gillis once and freaked the fuck out. He came up to my friend who was wearing a shirt from his college radio station and Greg started talking to him about it while I was nervously standing right there. I hate meeting celebrities or people I greatly admire due to how stupid I get around them
THIS. IS. AWESOME.
as someone who regularly busts out my ballet skillz in public, i appreciate this.
I kind of wish some of the "extreme ballet" was actually more ballet-y (or I guess contemporary, really), as a former dancer. But I have to admit minutes 6-7 look a lot like shit I might do while drunk, listening to "MBDTF" at 2am (Am I the only one who sometimes drunkenly choreographs ballet/hip-hop dances to "All of the Lights" & the interlude?) – although at the time I'm sure it seems way more awesome and creative than it actually is. I CANNOT wait to see what the tapper has in store. Hell yes.
@macaroni Me too! Well, wishing it was more ballet-y, anyway. While I was watching the long telephone sequence with Ms. Marsen I was fighting the urge to scream "Point Your Toes, OMIGOD!" the whole time while realizing that such commentary and "restrictions" are exactly what the video is reacting against. Argh.
I LOVED the Kickstarter video and overall concept for this project and have been greatly anticipating seeing more, but I'm a bit disappointed in this "chapter." All Day is one of my favorite dance/walk/write-it-out albums, and I just feel like the ballet-class-rebellion is sort of a tired trope on which to hinge the tone-establishing beginning of what I'm sure will be an exciting and fresh series.
