Maria Bamford Recommends Books

The very funny Maria Bamford recently spent $90 at Powell's, because she loves to read and dress herself in style.

[Thanks, Mary!]

Powell's is the best! I recently signed up for their Indiespensible subscription. I don't have room for the books I already own, but I don't care.

TreatYoSelf (#9,728)

@lobsterhug Are you a Portlander?

lobsterhug (#7,629)

@momentisaflower No, my brother-in-law is though and he used to work there. Those were the days.

Decca (#8,898)

Aaaaaah yes! I only recently learned about her through Julie Klausner's podcast, which lead me down a Maria Bamford Youtube wormhole. Just my type of absurdist humour.

melis (#841)

"You know what? That's language. This shit is fucking brilliant, Mom."

julia (#1,808)

@Decca "It's just like in high school. You're not funny, you're just weird."

melis (#841)

@julia "Why don't you try something healthier, like a piece of WHole WHeat toast with a banana spread on it? Because that's good."

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@Decca Oh god. Get on google. Google "The Maria Bamford Show." You're welcome.

"So now I whenever I'm home I make sure to wear thick green eyeshadow and a ring of lipstick AROUND my lips… BABY LOOK PRETTY NOW, MOMMY?"

meganmaria (#3,964)

@melis I wish I'd used this when my mom used to get so upset about me swearing all the time.

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@julia "Push credit or debit."

Brunhilde (#214)

@Decca "Except she actually wins that one though since Target has health benefits."

Craftastrophies (#10,180)

@SBGBlogs OH MY GOD. Please can I have thankyou sex with you now? (Not in the morning, though).

I freaking LOVE the Bamf. The phrase 'I crammed it in my munching cave' is common in my house. (From one of these I can't check which one on my work computer, but you should watch them ALL.

rayray (#2,447)

My internet is too slow for me to watch this but I don't need any more book recommendations cos I am reading Villette about a million years after that post about it, and after that I am gonna read I Love Dick which I received in the post this very morning. So thanks for the reading recommendations, The Hairpin, but one at a time, I mean SERIOUSLY.

Decca (#8,898)

@rayray Lucy Snowe definitely needed some di…nope, not going there.

rayray (#2,447)

@Decca SRSLY.

Decca (#8,898)

@rayray I actually feel a bit guilty for even making that joke because Villette is my absolute favourite and regularly makes me break down on public transport. Even thinking about those last few paragraphs make my upper lip go all wobbly and I need to take a moment. So, soz Charlotte!

rayray (#2,447)

@Decca Awhhh no stop I am like halfway through! So far it is only encouraging my habit of speaking Franglais at all times.

pterodactgirl (#10,128)

@rayray @Decca I read Villette on the Hairpin's recommendation too! And then their bookclub just disappeared and I was left with no one to share my FEELINGS. The last paragraphs! The whole thing! Ahh!

rayray (#2,447)

@pterodactgirl *puts fingers in ears* LALALALA
HOW IS IT that I can be the most obsessed-with-Victorian-Literature person I know and yet I am the last person on earth to read this book?

pterodactgirl (#10,128)

@rayray Sorry! I pretty much felt the same way before I read it. Why don't people ever talk about Villette the way they talk about Jane Eyre?

TreatYoSelf (#9,728)

Ahhhhh I love love love Maria Bamford! Has anybody seen her bit where she imitates her pug?

TreatYoSelf (#9,728)

@momentisaflower I'm just going to respond to myself here to say oh no I think this must be the dog she refers to later in this video. Her dad ran over it??? That's pretty much my worst nightmare (although for me it's a cat, not a dog).

melis (#841)

It is terrific, and so is this. "We do things a little differently around here. It's a bit of a nuthouse. So hold on to your hats!"

"BUT IT NEVER IS."

melis (#841)

You've got to dial 9 to get out.

Katie Scarlett (#10,144)

@melis I quote this bit non stop. Maria Bamford is seriously under appreciated.

melis (#841)

@Katie Scarlett "Where do you wanna go for lunch? What should we do for lunch? Where should we go for lunch today?"

"I dunno, feel like a sandwich or something."

"Uh huhhhh…"

"I guess I could get a salad maybe."

"Ohhhh."

"You know, just someplace where I could get a Diet Coke."

"WE COULD GO TO QUIZNO'S!"

"…Yes, we could. Diet Pepsi, but yes we could."

Brunhilde (#214)

@melis MINI MUFFIN MONDAY

melis (#841)

@Brunhilde Do not touch Donna's labelmaker. I am serious, you guys.

Craftastrophies (#10,180)

@melis I love her office bits. It's like somebody finally understands me! (SOB)

'Did you eat my key lime pie yoplait?'
'noooo'

akapocalypse (#6,949)

@momentisaflower I do know one of her dogs died recently, but I don't think her dad really ran over it. I got the impression it was just old age/the inevitable pug health issues.

TreatYoSelf (#9,728)

Also, yay Powells! She was in Portland a few weeks ago and my friend got to drive her around! He said she's incredibly nice.

PistolPackinMama (#7,875)

I am with her on the stupid vampire novels part.

smidge (#8,832)

i miss you, Portland

melis (#841)

It's sort of weird how Maria still doesn't understand that we are going to be best friends when I finally finish our matching hair suits.

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@melis One time I got to be on stage with Maria Bamford and she pretended to be my therapist and my life has never been the same.

julia (#1,808)

<3 U, Maria. And this made me remember this (fun to watch).

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@julia THANK YOU for linking to this. If I knew how to make links, I would have linked to that link.

elsbels (#7,046)

I'm way too old to say something like this and I don't even have a tumbler (where statements like this have a place), because that's for the younguns, but Maria Bamford is my life!

elsbels (#7,046)

Me again, please watch this for the flag factory, Merlin and zeitgeisty expressions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4egL6Ju6M0&feature=related

lizkimballet (#3,931)

@elsbels that was amazing. she's amazing. brb watching everything she's ever done.

Wow. That's a nice font. I'm into that font.

KeLynn (#2,993)

I totally forgot she existed!

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

MARIA BAMFORD! THE BAMMER!! LAK:HSFLKJALFS

BAMFORD + HAIRPIN = MY FAVORITE THINGS COMBINING!

[explodes]

meganmaria (#3,964)

@SBGBlogs How amazing would it be if Maria Bamford was a regular Hairpin contributor? I don't know who to contact or how to make this happen, but SOMEONE MAKE IT HAPPEN, PLEASE!

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@meganmaria IT WOULD BE THE BEST THING EVER OF ALL TIME.

a5ouncebird (#9,534)

@SBGBlogs My sentiments exactly. My friendship with a coworker was founded on our mutual admiration of M. Bamf.

The strength of our love was so strong that YOU GUYS WE CONJURED HER our first time hanging out outside of the office — we ran into her in a bookshop in Silverlake, where I kind of cornered her to say how much I loved her stuff? Unsurprisingly, she sidled away.

OhMarie (#8,874)

@SBGBlogs I KNOW!!! The Bammer!!! God, I love her so much. I'm almost certain that she is literally the best comedian in the world right now.

I have also had a couple of short, awkward conversations with her but she is still my favorite.

Patrick M (#308)

I wish she would have contacted me; I could have recommended "Chicken Soup for When Your Dog Dies"

ingrid.tuesday (#1,247)

I have this disease where my pulse goes crazy when someone mentions Powell's. I hope they never find a cure.

Oh man, I thought she said that her dad died, not her dog. I wonder if it was Burt or Blossom. She's the best.

Fraulein (#4,805)

"I'm a gypsy. I'm a seeaa cow. Yeah, I know the motorboats are going to hit me, but this is where I fucking swim!"

SBGBlogs (#1,341)

@Fraulein You get a thumbs up, and she gets a thumbs up, and everyone over there, they get thumbs up. Thumbs up for everyone!!!

Craftastrophies (#10,180)

How does the Hairpin know all the things I like?

skipperdee (#7,861)

@Craftastrophies RIGHT??? Is it possible to have a crush on a website? BECAUSE I DO.

Shmarmony (#4,224)

I love that she suggests a book for a club or a picnic! I wanted to take a book to a football game, and they scorned me. This woman is my sister.
