"Kate, Do You Want to Get Married?"

Kate Bolick (have you read the article yet?) chatted with Hoda and Kathie Lee this morning. (Green dress! Perfect choice.)

Edith proposed to Kate! Edith proposed to Kate! Edith proposed to Kate!

I have so many feelings about this!!! Mainly, thank you, Kate. Lori Gottlieb's "Marry Him" irritated me beyond reason and I've been waiting for someone to write something that felt like it reflected how I feel, how my friends feel, and how choo-choo-choosing to get married means you can choose not to.

Also, that green dress, yes.

@dr.funke It makes me feel so superficial that all I can think about is how ooooh sooooo preeetty she looks.

Edith Zimmerman

@myrna.minkoff (She is so beautiful! OK I had to say it.)

@dr.funke I'm not entirely unconvinced Lori Gottlieb isn't a giant shill for the wedding industrial complex. She WANTS you to spend $30K on your anthropologie inspired vintage garden party.

@myrna.minkoff It's not superficial! Lady is pretty. Done and done. She's also speaking truthfully about things that are true (for some people). Those things don't have to be mutually exclusive.

@parallel-lines Gottlieb's last parenting article in the Atlantic was similarly infuriating. She's not so good at imagining that other people have experiences different from her own. She bothers me more than Caitlin Flanagan, who I just imagine is a space alien.

@dr.funke Thank god I have found someone who shares my utter bafflement with Caitlin Flanagan and all she is and all she says and does!!! I can't even be mad at her because WHAT EVEN IS ALL THAT????

My heart is fluttering.

Can't see the video at work. Did Kate ask Kathie Lee if her marriage is really as soul-crushing as it appears?

@Edith Zimmerman
She looks like what Olivia Wilde will probably look like in 10 years. Gorgeous!

Really, Kathie Lee? Toe Fungus? Gawd, that woman really is awful.

@LastMinuteLulu This may be like validating the color of the sky, but can we just assume by the slurring that Kathie Lee is never not drunk on this show?

@DickensianCat Kathie Lee is never not drunk in general.

I read her article but after watching this, I feel duped.

@plumap How so? I do see the ultimate message of her article (which I think was carried through well in her interview with Edith) seems muddled by the format/Kathie Lee & Hoda, but I think she tried her hardest to get it across while the hosts did their best to reduce it to a pithy soundbite.

@thornbek Totally agree about the reductive drivel of the hosts. And while Bolick did her best, she mostly gave into, "I guess I haven't met the right guy yet." I was all fired up about lady communes and nontraditional support systems and then this?! (Also, I was really grumpy yesterday.)

Her reasons for not marrying young (especially what she said in the very beginning) perfectly describes why I never had children. Though the more time passes the more I realize that I don't want them at all.

I married youngish (29) and didn't choose as carefully as I should have. Like she said, I married because I was in love and marriage was what I was supposed to do. Now that I'm older, not only am I able make a better choice, but I'm also mature enough to have a deeper and more fulfilling relationship.

Incidentally, I'm not implying that 29 isn't mature enough to do these things; I'm just saying it wasn't for me. Some parts of us mature before other parts, and the order and the rates are different for everyone.)
