Dude can we take over the shuffleboard table and make it the first ever hairpin world championship shuffleboard competition? Also did this place used to be Doc's Clock?
@scully Nope, Doc's Clock is still there, up the street a bit. This did used to be Bissap Baobob, which…closed I guess. Li'l Baobob is still around, though.
@scully Sadness! I loved the food there. Lil Baobab, on the other hand, is a great place to get groped by sweaty men of various different nationalities.
YESSSS! I have been waiting for this day from the moment that I found out The Hairpin does meetups. I'll be there will bells on, ladies. That's how you'll know it's me. I'll be the pinata with bells.
By "San Francisco" did you, by chance, mean "Nashville"? I think the odds are pretty slim, but I wanted to check … just in case … because I could probably stop by ….
The thought of having to talk to people I don't know IRL is already giving me flop sweats and stomach cramps. I may have to get drunk at home first. Is this allowed? Other suggestions how to overcome I'm-a-shut-in syndrome would be most welcome…
@ejcsanfran Me too! Costume box. Not glitter eye patch. Although, I will be on the lookout for one of my own now. Argh (accompanied by fanciful hand gestures).
@ejcsanfran I've met around 30 internet friends in my long and illustrious career as an internet creep, and the biggest thing is what your mom told you in elementary school: have fun and be yourself. Everybody else is ALSO worried about coming across as a serial killer. You could always bring a friend, too, or meet one or two people before going to the actual meetup.
@ejcsanfran THIS … I'm a semi-lurker and even though I feel a frisson of excitement every time one of the commenters I admire outs themselves as a fellow bay area-er, and have dreamed of an SF 'pin-up, I fear I'm too chicken to show up. Maybe there can be a sub-gathering of the pathologically shy within this gathering? We can all wear masks and just text each other? Or something even less social?
@ejcsanfran If it's the glitter eye-patch, I'm IN! Plus, I'm an old too, so it will help hide all the wisdom in my eyes that give me away … and the crow's feet.
@pixie in p I have SO MUCH SOCIAL ANXIETY but I'm going to come because I just moved back here after college and I need to socialize instead of sit at home watching fringe. Also may need to pregame a little…
@pixie in p Please stop calling yourself the olds, because you're making me realize that most people who will be there will probably count me as an old, and I refuse to be an old yet, even though this will be happening shortly after a stupid older birthday.
@thebestjasmine aaaah … you are so right, I'll stop. Anyway, all Hairpinners are ageless! Right? Sorry, now I'm babbling – Does it make it any better if I admit that you are one of the people I'm most excited to maybe meet, and this is all nervous babbling – aaaand I'll just let myself out now …
@pixie in p Whoa! I had no idea this glitter eye patch conversation had been taken to this level. Please please please wear glitter eye patches and take a picture and send it to me. After all, Oct 22 is my birthday and a glittery eye patch photo would be the bestest birthday present I ever got … from people I never met.
I created an account just to say: yes! Dr. Teeth! OMG Tater Tots with toppings and drinks with Bullet Rye and chicken fingers and the bartender/owner with the handlebar mustache who's also a Red Sox fan. So. Yes. Awesome choice for a SF meet-up.
@PetuniaOaktown And judging from your handle I think I should tell you that there was some seeeerious discussion about having this thing in Oakland instead! Next time…
@Emma K@twitter YES. I just moved to Lake Merritt and have become obsessed with The Alley. Oakland next. When Rob Dibble is there, not Sunday when there's real karaoke. Everyone brush up your jazz standards!
Registered to chime in "yay!" I will try to make this as it looks fun! I'd love to meet other Hairpin readers in the SF area. And have drinks. Drinks with other Hairpin readers. Two birds, etc.
I am trying to get a job that would have an out-of-town conference on that day. So this is really a win-win for me, either I get the job or I can get drunk with y'all! Yay!
I know Phoenix is sometimes kind of terrible, but COME ON. There have to be some fellow lady (and gent) drunkards in the valley who care to gather together and stare at each other awkwardly while eating cake in a bar!
@lil.orphan.shannie I came onto this thread looking for a Phoenix mention! I'm in. I don't think I can design a nifty poster like the one above, though.
"Ms. Sevigny does not own a television and is not overly familiar with the show. 'I remember her hair with the poof at the front,' she said, 'but I don't think too many girls are doing that.'"
@figwiggin @Yahtzii That IS what I meant!!! Oh, forever embarrassment at not double checking her last name before posting. But yes, long dresses with little floral prints.
Ay, no! That…um…that's the day I have to hole up with my co-book-blogger because it's Dewey's 24-Hour Read-a-Thon. Dorkiest reason to miss a Pinup y/y?
@thebestjasmine I know, I am distraught. Sadface. Unless I can convince her that we should drive to SF from Berkeley and do part of our Read-a-Thon at the Pinup, I'll just have to sigh longingly until next time.
@thebestjasmine Noooo, I'm actually in Stockton in the Central Valley (sad trombone noises because the Valley sucks). I am always willing to drive out to the Bay Area, though.
Nooooooo! After watching every other city in North America get a Hairpin meetup, we finally get ours…within a 10 minute BART ride of my home…and I'll be out of town that weekend. Have fun, ladies! I'll be thinking of you.
@yeah-elle: I assume this particular venue was chosen because there is a weeping room. I mean, there is, right? PLEASE? PROMISE THERE WILL BE A WEEPING ROOM?!
A) i am making hairpin buttons with my ex-wife's button-maker. B) i will be coming from a two-day training at san quentin, so who's buying my first gin gimlet?
@marmoset eep, maybe you can help host the next one? we spent a fair amount of time talking about which place would be best and we set the time a little early and we're trying to get some drink specials for the ladiez. so. maybe next time you can put in your 2 cents before we set a date?
@simone eastbro Err…sorry. Wasn't aware of this as a thing that was happening. I'm sure it'll be really fun, bros and copyright infringement be damned!
@marmoset Oh no, pro sports! What will we do? Seriously, do you know how difficult it is to come up with a bar in SF that has enough space for a big gathering of ladies on a weekend night, AND is BART friendly? Plus, we will get drunk and make fun of all of the Marina bros and Mission hipsters.
@thebestjasmine I think we should be ok – baseball is over , basketball hasn't started, and no football games on Saturday nights. And hopefully we'll have claimed our stronghold before the Marina crowd cabs over from Tipsy Pig.
@marmoset I suggested Dr. Teeth, because I like it and the food is good and the drinks are good and the times I have been there it was not crowded. When I went at night, I think they were playing an artsy black and white movie, not sports. I hope it will not be horrible, and apologize in advance if it is.
OH. One thing that this invite neglected to mention is that our own Jane Marie has promised to come up from LA to attend. So we will be drinking and getting makeovers and everything.
@thebestjasmine Yes – I was just going to say!
Jane Marie, please come! You kind of have to come to the first CA pinup right?
Maybe we should all agree to show up with Jane's Emmy hair?? I am still fascinated by that spray stuff.
"Even though we live in San Jose, the Modesto of the Bay Area. Unless, is Modesto technically part of the Bay Area? Then we'd be the Modesto of the South Bay. Or the Midwest of California. Well, I suppose that'd be the San Joaquin Valley, really. Making us…Ohio? The Rust Belt of California? Or is that Pennsylvania? The Rust Belt part, that is, not the California part."
Hey, my friend just told me about a bar called Single Barrel in SJ that sounded INCREDIBLE – a speakeasy with delicious drinks! So I think when we plan the inevitable South Bay meetup we can have it there?
@killer_queen Ugh, preach it girl. I can put on a dress and cute shoes and accessorize and no matter what, I feel stupidly out of place. Jeans and t-shirt, please?
AWWW YEAH just created an account to comment on this and had to use an email from 2001 so as to not duplicate the other email that's lying around here or whatever.
see y'all there, way too excited about this. FINALLY.
This is kind of awkward. Would it wet-blanket the Pin-Up if I came? I ask because I look like my avatar, only not as suave. It's aspirational. (I'm older, but just as broke-ass as you are.) But I surely would love to hoist a few with the brilliance I read here every day.
Vancouver/Victoria BC Pinheads!!!! I'm interested in doing a meetup in Vancouver in the New Year, the Cascade Lounge and the Waldrof hotel are both fab and pin-worthy venues, let me know if this is something you want to see!
I live less than a block from this place! Avoid the Death Burger (served with a sauce so hot, you literally have to sign a waiver when you order it) and all should be well. I look forward to drinking so much with you all that I will forget the evening ever happened.
darn! that's the day of rugby regionals. wish I could be there, especially cause the venue sounds awesome. is it too early to start planning the next one?
Delurking to ask, Reno/Carson City/Tahoe anyone? I'd be happy to do all the arranging and everything. Am I the lone girl obsessed with the hairpin in the Sierras?
Ahhh! Not only am I so excited this is happening, but I'm moving to Oakland in a few weeks and now the little birdies tell me that's where the SECOND one is going to be held? I'm going to meet so many new friends all over the place! I love everybody!
1. Hairpin meetup in the SF? Fuck Yes.
2. Meetup on a Saturday night. Ugh. Not so much. B&T folks mess up every party in the city. Overcrowded bars are the absolute worst.
3. As was mentioned above, this is a bar in the part of the Mission district that Marina douches have invaded and have managed to establish a significant stronghold in. As soon as gentrification forces out both the Nortenos and the Surenos, you know the bar is going to suck.
I'm strongly in favor of keeping the same establishment but moving the event to the prior Thursday or Wednesday. The goal for something like this should be to takeover the bar. You can't accomplish that on the weekend.
@simone eastbro
Yeah…but you know who I'm talking about. And they aren't 'pinners. I didn't mean any disrespect to folks from Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose (you guys aren't really on my radar), or even Walnut Creek.
@becky_zharp
Well played becky_zharp. Your comment makes me look vaguely racist. To clarify, when I said 'those people', I was referring to people from the Marina, North Beach, and other Bay Area suburbs who are douchebags.
Ok I have registered too, First the costume drama club and now a IRL meeting!?! woohoo!
I too have wicked social anxiety, but I need new people in my life. So I will try. If not– I will for sure make the Oakland one, cause there's less anxiety for me in a smaller city setting.
I made an account for this too! I've been lurking since I moved to Oakland because I don't know any girls here. Saturday might conflict with working the Raider Rally because football = money = plane tickets. Oakland next time? Or a weeknight?
i've been WANTING to meet hairpinners!!! you'll recognize me because i'll be the socially awkward mainer recovering from foot surgery, limping in and not up to par with cute san francisco girl-fashion.
Does anyone have a lead on where I can get a bottle of Qream before the meetup? I want to bring Qream-themed desserts if possible but BevMo does not seem to carry it.
Sadly, I will not be making it. I am a slave to grants (aka, a grad student) and it's grant writing season. Also, I have plaster/plastic bits in my hair from working in the lab all day, which (I assume) is not in-season.
Judging purely on the name of the venue, I think I'm going to love this.
@Dancersize, I feel a strong urge to quit my job and move to SF because of this place's name alone.
@Dancersize Apparently, it is not Muppet themed which makes me very sad and confused.
Who would like to let me pass out on their floor?
Face, whatever.
@melis: How many snakes are you bringing?
@ejcsanfran All of them, obviously. Is this a trick question?
@melis ME! I WILL! sort of not kidding, g-fry. but you probably are? D:
@melis OH, i was talking about my floor, not my face. SORRY IF THAT SEEMED CREEPY.
Yay, San Francisco! Please come, so it's not just three of us sitting in the corner of a bar getting drunker and drunker.
@thebestjasmine You say that like it's a bad thing.
@thebestjasmine it will be four of us! but I'll be on pills.
@thebestjasmine Oh hurray, I'll get to meet you! I'll be very disappointed if you don't have a well-maintained Afro and a giant A's cap.
Also if EJSF is not a tooth with an eyepatch I am turning around and LEAVING.
@thebestjasmine YAY!!! YAY!!!!
@melis
Blanche Deveaureaux is my spirit animal but the resemblance is minimal, warning you in advance.
Thank you for doing this! So excited. Will now begin stressing about what to wear.
@Limaceous Well obviously the outfit starts with the hairpins…
Dude can we take over the shuffleboard table and make it the first ever hairpin world championship shuffleboard competition? Also did this place used to be Doc's Clock?
@scully According to Google Maps this used to be Bissap Baobob, or maybe still is, who knows.
@scully Nope, Doc's Clock is still there, up the street a bit. This did used to be Bissap Baobob, which…closed I guess. Li'l Baobob is still around, though.
@marmoset Ah ok – I don't know if this block is big enough for TWO shuffleboard tables!!
@meattubs This is weird, because three weeks ago I would have suggested our own Nashville meetup. But then I moved to San Francisco.
Ah! You should come back then!
Wait, did you move just for the meetup? You did, didn't you?
@meattubs I will neither confirm nor deny.
@Yahtzii I feel abandoned (originally typed "I fell abandonned").The only solution is a Nashville meetup.
The thought of having to talk to people I don't know IRL is already giving me flop sweats and stomach cramps. I may have to get drunk at home first. Is this allowed? Other suggestions how to overcome I'm-a-shut-in syndrome would be most welcome…
@ejcsanfran Duh, wear the eye patch!
@meattubs: That is great advice! I actually have a glitter eye patch in my costume box. And yes, I have a costume box.
@ejcsanfran But, for real, wear the eye patch.
@ejcsanfran Please come! Wear the eyepatch! Don't worry about pre drinking, we will drink plenty.
@meattubs The funky funky eyepatch
@insouciantlover Oh, the media monkeys and their junky junkies will invite you to the plastic pantomime.
@pixie in p: I'll let you borrow my eye patch, if that helps…
But seriously, just do it. I'm an old, a dude and a gay – so I'm kind of the opposite of many a 'Pinner. But I'm planning on showing up.
Plus there's booze, the universal solvent for the socially awkward.
@ejcsanfran If it's the glitter eye-patch, I'm IN! Plus, I'm an old too, so it will help hide all the wisdom in my eyes that give me away … and the crow's feet.
@pixie in p Olds unite! I'll be there – and if my awkward social anorexia kicks in, well, there's always booze and the exit!

@pixie in p
CAN WE ALL WEAR GLITTER EYEPATCHES??! Can that be our signal? I will stock up at 826 Valencia if we need.
@Diana BRB! I have to go figure out how to construct an entire outfit out of GLITTER EYEPATCHES!!!!

@PetuniaOaktown And judging from your handle I think I should tell you that there was some seeeerious discussion about having this thing in Oakland instead! Next time…
@scully Good to know. So many fun places to drink in Oakland. Not that I would know from personal, nightly experience or anything…Next time for sure…
@scully Oakland! Yes yes! I would love to meet a bunch of pinners at Van Kleef, or even the Alley.

Yay! What are they wearing in the Mission these days?
@melmuu Skinny white belts always.
@melmuu If we tell you, it won't be cool anymore.
@melmuu An accurate representation: http://tinyurl.com/6e57bhb
@melmuu Elaine Bennett dresses, black matte tights, little gnarled old man boots, surly expressions and ugly hats.
@insouciantlover I thought you'd written "Elaine Benes dresses" for a second and sat here trying to remember what kind of clothing she wore.
@figwiggin Oh shit, I'm sort of disappointed that's NOT what it said. For the record, it was Laura Ashley dresses with Oxfords and a backpack purse.
@figwiggin Actually the hipsters HAVE co-opted the Elaine look: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/19/fashion/19ELAINE.html
@scully That is an amazing article.
"Ms. Sevigny does not own a television and is not overly familiar with the show. 'I remember her hair with the poof at the front,' she said, 'but I don't think too many girls are doing that.'"
@figwiggin Of COURSE she doesn't own a television. Of course.
@figwiggin Nooooooo. Sob.
@thebestjasmine I know, I am distraught. Sadface. Unless I can convince her that we should drive to SF from Berkeley and do part of our Read-a-Thon at the Pinup, I'll just have to sigh longingly until next time.
@figwiggin Are you usually in Berkeley? We should totally have an East Bay pinup next time!
@thebestjasmine Noooo, I'm actually in Stockton in the Central Valley (sad trombone noises because the Valley sucks). I am always willing to drive out to the Bay Area, though.
@thebestjasmine I SECOND THIS EMOTION
@thebestjasmine I'm East Bay! Oakland here.
@Yahtzii Dude me too and we talked about this before! Oakland next time! Oakland Oakland rah rah rah!
@scully DEFINITELY Oakland next time. Yay Oakland.
@simone eastbro ME TOO! East Bay FTW.
@thebestjasmine YES! East Bay always all the time.
Yes…………Definitely going.
Yay! Assuming this will be nothing like a Yelp party in 2007, I will TOTALLY be there!
@insouciantlover If I go, this will be my first internet meetup since Yelp elite events in 2007. So yeah, here's hoping for the best.
@Emma K@twitter well then… here's hoping that I've never drunkenly groped your boob before! (I may have)
Nooooooo! After watching every other city in North America get a Hairpin meetup, we finally get ours…within a 10 minute BART ride of my home…and I'll be out of town that weekend. Have fun, ladies! I'll be thinking of you.
(don't call it San Fran!)
Won't be in the city for this one, boooooooo.
Yeah so I just made an account to say how excited I am (and also I've been meaning to speak up, so, uh, hey)!
If the stupid wedding I have to go to earlier that day ends in time, I am absolutely, totally there.
i am excited and terrified. i might be there, probably nervously weeping. SEE YA GUYS
@yeah-elle: I assume this particular venue was chosen because there is a weeping room. I mean, there is, right? PLEASE? PROMISE THERE WILL BE A WEEPING ROOM?!
@yeah-elle me too!
A) i am making hairpin buttons with my ex-wife's button-maker. B) i will be coming from a two-day training at san quentin, so who's buying my first gin gimlet?
@simone eastbro – can't believe you didn't get a firm response on this. I'd love to buy you a drink, simone.
@no way THANKS BOO
OMFG I will be out of town! I am SADZ!!!! Argh!!!!!!!!
Ughhh no this bar is horrible. It's around the corner from my apartment…it's going to be all f*cks from the Marina and TV's playing pro sports!
@marmoset eep, maybe you can help host the next one? we spent a fair amount of time talking about which place would be best and we set the time a little early and we're trying to get some drink specials for the ladiez. so. maybe next time you can put in your 2 cents before we set a date?

Maybe we should all agree to show up with Jane's Emmy hair?? I am still fascinated by that spray stuff.
@thebestjasmine whaaaaaaaat this means I'm extra going to be there!
YES! One more reason to escape the armpit of the Bay that is San Jose.
"You have completely lost me."
@squid v. whale Amen, lady! (Though, honestly, I'm perpetually ambivalent about being from/living in San Jo.)
I am already nervously/excitedly planning an outfit. I am nowhere *near* hip enough for the Mission, but am already over that.
@squid v. whale
@Diana I think I've heard of that place. Spinoff meetup!
@Diana YES YES! I just looked it up while in grad class and squealed a little. Oops. But yes!
AWWW YEAH just created an account to comment on this and had to use an email from 2001 so as to not duplicate the other email that's lying around here or whatever.
see y'all there, way too excited about this. FINALLY.
also. east bay?? east bay?????
@jubilee east bay!!

@Barry Grant
Judging from two NYC events, you would be welcome!
Vancouver/Victoria BC Pinheads!!!! I'm interested in doing a meetup in Vancouver in the New Year, the Cascade Lounge and the Waldrof hotel are both fab and pin-worthy venues, let me know if this is something you want to see!
I also created an account just to say how excited I am! Smart ladies and drinks…can't wait.
Holy shit! Where was I yesterday?
I'm late to the party but I will be there (I was out of town Tues.).
I live less than a block from this place! Avoid the Death Burger (served with a sauce so hot, you literally have to sign a waiver when you order it) and all should be well. I look forward to drinking so much with you all that I will forget the evening ever happened.

@Captain DuClark
Self-edit: Actually, you could takeover a bar, in the Mission, on a Saturday, if you got most of your crew there by 7pm.
@Captain DuClark
If you are implying that our mission is to start drinking at 6 PM, I accept. For the good of the group.
@Captain DuClark we know all those things, but Jane wanted to come and could only come on a weekend.
@Captain DuClark and every 'pinner coming from the east bay or SJ is a B&Ter, by the way.
@simone eastbro Jane?! Jane Marie?! Now I really don't know what to wear.
@simone eastbro
Yeah…but you know who I'm talking about. And they aren't 'pinners. I didn't mean any disrespect to folks from Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose (you guys aren't really on my radar), or even Walnut Creek.
@Captain DuClark Ew.
@becky_zharp
Well played becky_zharp. Your comment makes me look vaguely racist. To clarify, when I said 'those people', I was referring to people from the Marina, North Beach, and other Bay Area suburbs who are douchebags.
@Captain DuClark I assumed you meant people from Colma.
Ok I have registered too, First the costume drama club and now a IRL meeting!?! woohoo!

Oh shit, how late do these things go until? I'll actually be in town for this but I'll be busy until later that night probably…
Ooh, I'm looking directions up on Google Maps and this place is only 8 minutes away from Bottom of the Hill (where I'll be at).
I made an account for this too! I've been lurking since I moved to Oakland because I don't know any girls here. Saturday might conflict with working the Raider Rally because football = money = plane tickets. Oakland next time? Or a weeknight?
OF COURSE I will be out of town for this. D:
I second the motion for an East Bay (Oakland represent!) meet up though!
I hereby third the East Bay Hairpinners meet up! When? Where?
PS: This lil lady works on Saturday nights…do Fridays work?
@absofreakinglutely Yes! The Trappist?
@absofreakinglutely The Trappist or The Alley have my votes!
I'm gonna come at 7:45 so that maybe people will already be a little faded and then I won't be Awkward Brown Girl starting conversations.
Possible Ex.: "You know how you guys were like, talking about dressing like Elaine Benes to come to the mission? I'm dressed like her too! With a Today Sponge©. In my vagina©. Wait, where are you going?"
I'll be the awkward foreign girl…
i've been WANTING to meet hairpinners!!! you'll recognize me because i'll be the socially awkward mainer recovering from foot surgery, limping in and not up to par with cute san francisco girl-fashion.
So… we're getting there at 6, right? Confirmation? Anyone? Bueller?
I want to go to there
I'm really looking forward to this meet-up! I am debating wearing a dress but is this overkill? Anyone?
@adminslave Wearing a dress is never overkill. Do it up.
People are still going to this right? I'm showing up, alone. Scary!
YES THAT WAS RAD
SEE YOU NOV 30 AT 7 AT CAFE VAN KLEEF IN OAKLAND.
