Save the Dates, Boston and LA

Boston: Head to Charley's in the Back Bay on Thursday, August 25, where Hairpin pals Lily Rowan and Becky (the woman behind the glorious poster) will take extra-special care of you, in a normal way.

Meanwhile, LA: You are invited to the very newly opened Mohawk Bend on Wednesday, August 17, at 7 p.m.! DeepOmega is hosting, drawing pictures of A Lady, and hoping you have questions for him.

(Plus: New York, Seattle, Philly, Chicago. We're really doing this! What could possibly go wrong?)

deepomega (#134)

Yessss let's do this!

boyofdestiny (#794)

@deepomega Sad that these are a week apart! We could have set up some elaborate bicoastal satellite feed or something.

melis (#841)

Is the LA poster purposely hard to read so that I can't find it? It is, isn't it?

deepomega (#134)

@melis Pretend you are an archaeologist, translating the poor handwriting of a lost civilization.

Katie Walsh (#107)

@deepomega WAHOOOOO I am tattooing this Save the Date to my forehead so I will never forget.

Katie Walsh (#107)

@deepomega And this is like mad close to my new spot as well. YYAAAAYYEESSSS

deepomega (#134)

@Katie Walsh: Errbody loves Echo Park! Also I am stoked to welcome you to our Fair Towne with local beers and possibly baked goods.

melis (#841)

@deepomega Oh God, I need funding!

deepomega (#134)

@melis Who needs funding when you've got undergrads.

Katie Walsh (#107)

@deepomega and Qream.

jstar (#3,537)

@deepomega whoohoo! thanks for organizing, deepomega! :)

ragdoll (#3,503)

Oh my gosh. I just moved to Echo Park–LIKE JUST THIS PAST SATURDAY. Should I go? Will I be the youngest person there? Will I be able to get past my crippling shyness?

deepomega (#134)

@ragdoll Yes. No, I'll bring along my band of street urchins to keep things lively/pick pockets. Yes, definitely, that is why it is at a bar and not at a nude beach!

ragdoll (#3,503)

@deepomega Good call. I will be there.

LolaLaBalc (#2,684)

@ragdoll I am so there! I haven't tried Mohawk Bend yet, and this is the perfect opportunity. I hope I have a hipster enough haircut.

Tammy Pajamas (#2,743)

@Katie Walsh I will be there too! I will not bail this time. It's really close to me as well!

Tammy Pajamas (#2,743)

@Tammy Pajamas Ok. Just noticed that's a Wednesday. I have class til 9:30. Are you guys still gonna be around?

deepomega (#134)

@Tammy Pajamas: Based on last time…. yes. We most definitely will. Hit me up on twitter the day of if you want confirmation!

Tammy Pajamas (#2,743)

@deepomega Will do, thanks!

Tammy Pajamas (#2,743)

@deepomega Grrrrrr…. Just had a midterm rescheduled for the next day, so I might not make it at all. Jeez, I'm all talk on here! I'll still come out if I am prepared…

@deepomega: … is that the Handsome Man signal? I'm needed!

@ragdoll I also just moved to Echo Park last week! …and also @deepomega I live on Mohawk St., so thanks for making this event stumbling distance from my apartment. I will be sure to have way too much fun. Woo!

PixiePaperDoll (#2,940)

Atlanta??? Why do you hate the south so much, Hairpin?

rien à dire (#3,033)

@PixiePaperDoll Seconding Atlanta. C'mon, Hairpin, we'll take you to the World of Coca-Cola museum.

@rien à dire These are all reader-organized events — if you want to put something together, just send me the info and I'll post it. LIKE MAGIC!

QuiteAmiable (#5,570)

@rien à dire @PixiePaperDoll If there was an ATL meetup, I would consider driving down for it.

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@PixiePaperDoll if you plan it, the pinners will come.

PixiePaperDoll (#2,940)

@becky@twitter If I have to cut down my corn crops, I might not organize this shindig.

@PixiePaperDoll ATLANTA! THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!*

*If somebody else plans it. Then I would totally go!

rien à dire (#3,033)

@PixiePaperDoll @QuiteAimable @HeyThatsMyBike I can try planning it but I'm new to town and only know like two bars. Atlanta Pinners maybe want to tweet me (@thereallengli) and we can see about getting this moving? And our publicity poster will be Scarlett O'Hara themed, of course.

@rien à dire I am really bad about keeping up on Twitter – but feel free to email me for thoughts or help at HeyThatsMyBike25 [at] gmail.com. And welcome to the neighborhood!

QuiteAmiable (#5,570)

@rien à dire I'm in Tennessee so I know squat about ATL bars and stuff but ya'll tell me when and where and I will do my best to be there!

rien à dire (#3,033)

@HeyThatsMyBike Thanks for the welcome and I'll definitely be in touch very soon!

@QuiteAimable Sweet, I'll see what I can do!

Chicago too, don't forget! Next Sunday! There will be qrumpets.

SuperGogo (#3,574)

@wallsdonotfall F'real? Don't tease me.

josiahg (#3,723)

@wallsdonotfall I will be making cupcakes! (not qupqakes–I cannot bring myself to buy Qream).

JoanTition (#3,179)

I STARTED THE POSTERS BECAUSE I AM AN AMAZING TRENDSETTER AND YOU REPAY ME BY FORGETTING ABOUT CHICAGO?

frenemies.

JoanTition (#3,179)

@JoanTition * I am not always yelling in real life…. I'm just generally full of outrage.

@JoanTition Ahh I'm sorry!!! Fixed fixed fixed!

JoanTition (#3,179)

@Edith Zimmerman Thanks Edith!

TullyMMills (#7,129)
deepomega (#134)

@TullyMMills Conclusive proof that I have not gotten any better at drawing on computers in the last decade.

emilylouise (#2,033)

NOTE FOR SEATTLE MEETUP:
Today's Seattle Groupon is for Pies & Pints. = even cheaper booze for us! Buy one! It's like the whole internet is supporting us in our drunken meeting endeavors.

purplesocks (#6,027)

@emilylouise I think it's LivingSocial, actually. But still! I'm totally doing it! Drinks (kinda) on them!

emilylouise (#2,033)

@purplesocks My bad, you're right. I just call all those million coupon sites "Groupon" in my head

annierebekah (#3,963)

BOSTON, YAY.

xine (#5,207)

@annierebekah i'm planning on driving in from worcester. That's how much I love Hairpinners (and how bored I am of Worcester).

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@xine yay! boston meetup!

i lived just outside of worcester for two years (for a job, essentially). get out while you are still alive!

@xine I will be bringing a friend we're coming from 2 hours away. I've always wanted to go to one of these.

Poodle (#4,658)

You guys, this is really exciting! I was crossing my fingers for an L.A. pinup, because I just moved here from Boston! It's like the heavenly bodies are cosmically aligned into an optimum force of awesomenetude that will explode in laser rays of friendship!!!! (If I can convince myself to take deep breaths and 'put my self out there,' that is. I will! I will.)

boyofdestiny (#794)

Eastern Standard, then Newbury Street. At this rate, the Boston Hairpin Christmas party will be at Alibi. The Boston Hairpin Vernal Equinox Bacchanal will be on the moon.

terracottalover (#8,598)

@boyofdestiny Charley's is actually pretty reasonable.

boyofdestiny (#794)

@terracottalover Oh, I know. But I had to set up the "party on the moon" gag somehow!

NeenerNeener (#2,582)

@boyofdestiny: If it's anything like last time, we can pretend that we chipped in and no one will be the wiser. Sorry, waiter, no ridiculously huge tip for you this time.

Of course I'm kidding. Or am I?

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

We are SUPER HIGH CLASS in Boston. Or else I'm just lazy. The truth is, the Vernal Equinox Bacchanal will be in my apartment.

NeenerNeener (#2,582)

@Lily Rowan: No, SUPER HIGH CLASS, as is evidenced by our poster.

NeenerNeener (#2,582)

@NeenerNeener And the ridiculous tip the server got last time. (I can't edit my comment!)

boyofdestiny (#794)

@NeenerNeener Our server at Eastern Standard used our tip to put a down payment on a beachside house in Falmouth.

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@boyofdestiny bukowskis was too small. charley's is fairly cheap but doesn't have the stink of the pour house nor the dude bros of mcfaddens.

closetalker11 (#7,094)

@becky@twitter YES AND YES. Charley's is inoffensive and centrally located. Also I like their clam chowder. Will we be downstairs?

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@closetalker11 yes! we will be at the downstairs bar.

terracottalover (#8,598)

Oh darn, I am in class during the Boston meet up. I've never been to one before. Please have another one on a Friday or Saturday night!

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@terracottalover I'm sure we will!

le mango (#2,580)

@terracottalover I am seconding the request for another Boston 'pinner meet-up, because I am seriously moving to the city four days after this one and the other day I was thinking to myself "I am afeared of moving because I have never before had to make friends in a new city" and then "I wish the Hairpin would do a Boston meet because I suspect all the ladies who show up would be exactly the sort of friends I want to make" and now "please don't let the ship have sailed on this opportunity because I will cry."

Manchester Tart (#5,390)

Ooooh, I'm moving to Boston from England on the 16th. I'd really like to come to the Boston one, but maybe I'm too scared. I don't know, I've written it in my diary anyway in the hope that I'm not too scared. I've posted on the hairpin maybe 3 times ever – I'm still allowed right?

boyofdestiny (#794)

@Manchester Tart Please come!

AmeliaBadelia (#8,332)

@Manchester Tart I'm sort of scared too! I don't know many people in Boston because I just moved here. I will need to put on my Big Girl Pants and show up. Please come too! We can be brave together!

NeenerNeener (#2,582)

@Manchester Tart: It's an especially good idea to come if you don't know many people in the area. I promise, we're not ALL creepy, scary internet people.

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@NeenerNeener It's true — I"m pretty sure that's why most people showed up to the last one.

AmeliaBadelia (#8,332)

@Lily Rowan How many people came to the last one? I'm just trying to calculate how many new friends I will make!

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@Manchester Tart no! come! please! we don't bite. well, not all of us.

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@AmeliaBadelia Like 20 people came to the last one? It was great! Also, you could totally get away with only talking to two or three people if that's how you roll.

AmeliaBadelia (#8,332)

@Lily Rowan Oh wow! Lots of people! I will try my very hardest not to wimp out because I really want to meet some people here… working from home is lonely and very bad for making new friends.

Cowabunga (#7,165)

@Manchester Tart Absolutely do it! I was too scared to go to the last Boston one bc I figured everyone would be really cool and pretty and sophisticated and I am SUPA AWKWARD Y'ALL.

But screw that! Any website that supports doofy looking sea-bugs as advertisements is clearly welcoming to all types of peoples yaaaay.

Daisy Razor (#4,772)

@Manchester Tart Aw, you guys have convinced me to come, even though I am a newish commenter. I'm not new to Boston, though. I'm a cranky old townie. So you're all welcome to pick my brain for, like, tips on how to be rude enough to fit in and what to do when your train explodes.

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@Cowabunga Yeah, we're awesome (OBVIOUSLY) but not at all intimidating. As a people.

Manchester Tart (#5,390)

Oh wow, thanks everyone. Ok I'm going to be brave. I have no idea where Charley's, or in fact anywhere, is, but I'll find it. Will be good to meet you all. I figure if I just drink through the nerves I'll end up witty and charming and everyone will love me. Because that always works.

Nutmeg (#4,220)

@Manchester Tart Come!! Last time I got drunk and told everyone way-too-personal anecdotes, and nobody complained or even acted like this was out of the ordinary.

fiiierce (#6,693)

@Daisy Razor I am attending expressly for the purpose of hearing the story behind that train exploding comment! Also, because I am moving to Beantown (from a rural-ish area that is not-so-far-away-yet-so-different) and I am AFRAID. Although, I can be mean, so maybe I won't be trampled, like, immediately. Gradual trampling?!

editrickster (#4,127)

@Manchester Tart et al: This whole comment thread has convinced me to get past my fear of Scary Internet People and come. I'm going to try and bring my coworker, who lurks with me. I can't wait!

Daisy Razor (#4,772)

@fiiierce Oh, it's sadly not that exciting! The announcer told my husband's train that it was being "taken out of service," but failed to mention that it was because there was fire shooting out of the back of the train. You know, the usual stellar MBTA service.

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@Manchester Tart newbury street and gloucester street. closest t stops are copley or hynes on the green line.

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@fiiierce just steer clear of the doors and all will be fine.

closetalker11 (#7,094)

@Daisy Razor I've commented like 7 times and 6 were about meet-ups (the other time was about the Star Trek fashion blog). Sooooo we can share the noob table.

closetalker11 (#7,094)

@Daisy Razor Hah! I once had the pleasure of informing a T conductor at Copley that the top of the train was on fire. Then I walked home.

laurel (#111)

@Edith: Not that I'll ever attend a Hairpin-Up because I am in nowheresville, but maybe it would help everyone keep track of when and where if, in addition to the fantastic poster posts, there was a little running list of planned meetups in a little box over there to the right, under the contributor and masthead boxes?

laurel (#111)

@Edith Zimmerman What, you've got, like, things to do?

dormilona (#8,596)

I just registered to say Yay Boston!

@dormilona I just bothered logging in to say Yay Boston!

schadenfraulein (#6,588)

Are mostly-lurkers allowed to come too?? :/

NeenerNeener (#2,582)

@schadenfraulein: I think the last one in Boston was mostly complete-lurkers.

LastMinuteLulu (#4,896)

Dammit, I'm going to be in SF on the 25th! Have a shot of qream for me, guys?

Nadia (#3,577)

I think the Boston and the NYC meetups should arrange for a video live stream/call type thingie.

boyofdestiny (#794)

@Nadia Or agree to meet in New Haven for a Sharks/Jets–esque showdown!

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@boyofdestiny i will start practicing my snap walk for the occasion.

becky@twitter (#6,742)

YAY! charley's! hairpinners! back bay sangrias!

our lobster will take on any of your regional foods. BRING IT, pinners from other lands. BRING IT.

hyphenanne (#1,296)

I am in the wilds of Canada (okay, Winnipeg), but I will be in Minneapolis in October if anyone wants to get really into planning things in advance? Alternatively, people could come up to Winnipeg! It's a delight, I promise you, even if it is literally hours and hours away from the next-nearest city.

@hyphenanne I was just scrolling down to look for Minneapolis commenters! Yes, yes, yes. If anyone wants a Mpls meet-up I am in!

Pinecones (#8,058)

@the scarlet varlet @hyphenanne I'm moving to Minneapolis next month and would be totally down for a meet-up with Hairpinners!

MissMushkila (#1,988)

@the scarlet varlet Me too! I'm not going to plan it, but I will absolutely be in attendance if people get a Minneapolis meet-up planned!

rayray (#2,447)

Okay, there has been demand in the past but not lately, but anyway. UK Hairpinners, if you are reading this and want to meet some internet strangers, express your interest now, or forever hold your peace. I am lazy and disorganized but if enough of you holla at me I might get my shit together!

LolaLaBalc (#2,684)

@rayray
Whereabouts in the UK? I will be moving to Brighton in a month, and would sooo be up for some anonymous Pinning!

rayray (#2,447)

@LolaLaBalc I'm moving to Leeds in a month, but if London is central-est* then I will not turn down an excuse to make a trip down.
* Not a word

Alice (#4,687)

@rayray Definitely! If it's London, I will help plan!

rayray (#2,447)

@Alice Fuuun!!! Weeeeell how shall we do this? You wanna email me at ballsinfrance@hotmail.co.uk ?? (for some reason I have a mental block about giving out my gmail address with my actual name even though I have explicitly mentioned both my first and last names on the Hairpin… oh well) Maybe it'll just be the three of us, maybe some lurkers will come outta the woodwork. (Heyyy LURKERS?!)

Alice (#4,687)

@rayray Awesome, will email today!

lamesauce (#6,979)

@rayray yes! London would be amazing. Will email you. Late to party as always

beams! (#4,459)

yay! i can totally go to this one – I'm on vacation that week and can therefore be extra fun!

Augh, that is on my birthday! Which means my parents will probably make me go out and "celebrate" and I won't be able to come.

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@major disaster Booo.

boyofdestiny (#794)

@major disaster Bring your parents. I'll make sure I iron my shirt, so you don't have to worry about being embarrassed by me.

@boyofdestiny Haha, that would be hilarious. They'd be all, what is this, I don't understand? A website, what? (Which makes them sound really old. Of course it's not like they don't understand the internet, but I think they might not get the concept of meeting up with total strangers* just because you all read the same website.)

*Not that we're still all total strangers to each other at this point, but you know what I mean.

@serenityfound (#5,464)

@major disaster I just tried to explain the site to my mother after mentioning the LA meetup. It was….interesting. "So, it's a site for ladies? I'm a lady. What are they doing? Just going to a bar? To do what? *confusion*"

E (#2,819)

Whoohoo LA! How shall we all recognize each other? Everyone subtly wear a hairpin, but not in their hair?

deepomega (#134)

@E: Doll head wine glasses.

E (#2,819)

@deepomega containing a spider or a pigeon. Your choice.

taxine (#7,031)

Too bad this isn't Charlie's Kitchen instead(cheaper AND closer to where I live)

parisskyes (#2,161)

@taxine whooo, Charlie's Kitchen! I second that. And I'm also inappropriately obsessed with Grendel's. Maybe we should form a rebel group of Cantabridgians? But that might be too douchey…

beams! (#4,459)

@taxine lets all go to charlie's kitchen a different night…i love charlies! beer garden!

boyofdestiny (#794)

@beams! Incidentally, the first Boston Awl meetup was at Charlie's Kitchen. Maybe the Cambridge Pinup can be there?

beams! (#4,459)

@boyofdestiny lets do it!

becky@twitter (#6,742)

@taxine can i be a rebel and go to both?

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

I would be psyched for a Cambridge Pinup! I just don't think of it — you know how the Charles is nearly impossible to cross….Other people, totally make a Cantabridgian Pinup!!

beams! (#4,459)

@Lily Rowan its actually 100% impossible as my friend from Brookline will tell you.

beams! (#4,459)

@becky@twitter i know i will!

BoozinSusan (#3,555)

@taxine I would definitely be down for both the Boston AND the Cambridge Pinup. Yes! And we are having our Hairpin Book Club meeting tomorrow night at 7 PM, Empire Garden, Chinatown for any crashers. The book is Lolita, by some white Russian.

taxine (#7,031)

@parisskyes I actually like Grendel's better in general, but I've just been going to Charlie's longer and I feel at home in shitty places like it.

taxine (#7,031)

@Lily Rowan Unless you're drunk and don't notice how slow and stanky the bus is.

closetalker11 (#7,094)

@taxine OOOOH GURL. Maybe that's where we're going next because that place is fun. Also, yea for the Best Side of the river!!! I would gladly support a People's Republic Of Greater Camberville Area Pinup.

Oh hey, so I just made the connection a few minutes ago, but before everyone goes to Charley's, make sure to find out if they've fixed their AC! I was there Friday night for about two minutes with a friend trying to find a place to watch the Red Sox game, and the downstairs AC was not working (or not working enough) so it was hot and stuffy down there, even on a day that wasn't that hot outside. Also it smelled strongly of fish. The upstairs part was fine, though.

Lily Rowan (#2,178)

@major disaster YIKES.

ruyeas (#8,627)

–Something unexpected surprise–

Hello. My friend

http://www.jordansforking.com/

Dedi cated service, the new style, believing you will love it!!!

WE ACCEPT PYA PAL PAY MENT

YOU MUST NOT MISS IT!!!

thank you!!!

DOES ANYONE ELSE LIVE IN VIRGINIA?

@serenityfound (#5,464)

Oh, dang. I really want to go to the LA meet-up, but between my social fail, living a good 2hrs away, & getting the stink eye from my parents (whom I live with on account of post-grad school unemployment) about going to something like this alone… *le sigh*

deepomega (#134)

@@serenityfound: If you want I can talk to them and pretend I am the host of a job fair?

@serenityfound (#5,464)

@deepomega I lol'd at that so hard I had to pause Arrested Development and read it to my mom. She laughed, then proceeded to ask "…so what's this site? This thing? *confused face*"

queenieliz (#7,236)

You've planned the LA meetup on a night I work, of course. Saves me the trouble of getting over my social anxiety to come out. Oh well.. Any chance there'll be another one? (plus, I really want to go to Mohawk Bend!)

momjeans (#9,043)

baltimore?! anybody? what will be funny if this happens is that we probably already know each other…
