Is the Cube the Tiniest Home in the World?

Maybe not, but it's extremely small. Currently just a prototype at the Edinburgh Science Festival, The Cube, which measures three meters on all sides, has:

… a lounge, with a table and two custom-made chairs, a small double bed (120cm wide), a full-size shower, a kitchen (with energy-efficient fridge, induction hob, re-circulating cooker hood, sink/drainer, combination microwave oven and storage cupboards), a washing machine, and a composting toilet.

It's cute, kind of. There's also a 360 degree panoramic photo-tour if you want to zoom in on the toilet and/or envision the various ways you'd fall to your death on those toadstool stairs in the center ("you need to start with your left foot, otherwise you'll get out of sync with the steps"). Painting the walls and putting up some art might make it more appealing. OK, it took a sec, but I love it now. Tiny House!

That's awesome!

One person, perhaps two friendly people. I love it.

I was amused (easily) by this photo caption: "A view of the lounge taken from the kitchen/shower"

did i accidentally load some sort of boutique hairpin this morning? LOLA.THEHAIRPIN.COM/LITTLELIVING?

boyofdestiny (#794)

Where can I get in on this feed-in tariff business? A thousand pounds a year! That's a lot of money!

sp8ce (#2,981)

Pretty cool but I couldnt even stand up in that place.

this is my favorite tag on the hairpin.

I like this one because of the adorable British man, but these tiny houses are at least 24x more awesome:

@shalalah Yes! Even more interesting tiny houses at tinyhouseblog.com. Love it.

Kneetoe (#329)

It's just a prototype; the real one will be 3 miles/side.

The staircases are genius.

cherrispryte (#281)

@spiralbetty also terrifying if you are clumsy! (I have a hard time not falling on normal stairs!)

boyofdestiny (#794)

Can we get a video of someone walking up them starting off with the right foot?

laurel (#111)

@cherrispryte Maybe the 'left, right, left…" design helps with the stairs v. biped problem? If not, I'm doomed too. Think of all the places one could hit one's head on the way down!

Peteykins (#4,497)

I guess this is perfect for the Apple/Kindle future where everything everybody "owns" is kept on tiny electronic devices and nobody owns objects more than two or three years old.

*shudder*

Also adorable are these tiny sphere dwellings: http://www.freespiritspheres.com/. They're not full homes since they don't have bathrooms or kitchens, but on the plus side you get to live in the treetops, & "it's like being in a nut shell that's decorated like a palace." WANT ONE.

laurel (#111)

I love them. I want a whole colony of them.

oh, disaster (#5,314)

Seriously cute, but my claustrophobia would keep me from going inside. :(

piekin (#1,786)

@Andrea@twitter seconded. i was getting claustrophobic just watching the video.

Ellie (#2,231)

It reminds me a little of my college dorm room. I love small spaces. Easy and fast to clean frequently (I'm a neat freak).

Caryn Josepher (#3,936)

Phew….In the future we're all single! That's a relief!

MsChilePepper (#3,944)

Oh, sure, you totally want to fry your sausages and onions right next to your bed! April fresh!

I do love the efficiency and all the storage nooks and space-saving trickeries in boats and RVs. I think I'd go batty in this joint, though. Might be excellent for a vacation spot, though.

Box (#4,936)

@MsChilePepper I was just thinking this would be great for a vacation spot or a writing getaway spot. The Cube is cute, but my library of books would never fit in it….

Becca (#43)

LOVE IT! About 2 years ago, I was kind of obsessed with people who lived in tiny houses and lived off the grid or … adults who lived in treehouses (it's a thing!).

This video MAY have reignited that because A Googling has commenced.

Rab (#5,871)

Who can I contact to get some of these cube houses built?
