How many people are going to hit this video in a panic, thinking Cat Power is … what? Down?

Yeah, first I thought that Chan Marshall took a tumble, and then I decided she must be depressed (again?), and then it turns out it's a literal cat doing the first thing, sort of.

Caption, in English: "The cat really wants to sleep"

Years of studying Russian has finally paid off in the things that matter: cat videos!

Dammit you beat me to it.

Me too! Studying Russian does not pay off as much as obsessively refreshing the Hairpin, dammit!

Also, I was going to make exactly the same comment about my Russian studies finally paying off, ha ha! My Russian is crap too, so that probably is the only way it will ever pay off (well, the 2 months I spent in Moscow aside).

Although, why is it koshke not koshka? Is that some sort of cute diminutive I'm not aware of (see: crap Russian comment above).

DorothyMantooth (#1,999)

Nope! It's the case, or padezh. It basically means, "To the cat very much wanting [itself] to sleep." Russian is weird and fun!

(A diminutive of koshka might be koshichka.)

DorothyMantooth (#1,999)

That is, the case changes because of the reflexive verb: yey hochitsya spat' versus ana hochit spat'.

Okay, I'll stop.

Gwan (#2,342)

Thanks for the explanation! Yeah, I noticed the reflexive and thought it was weird. I gave up Russian when we got introduced to the perfective (well, not immediately, universities tend to frown on that sort of thing). And then I proceeded to forget almost everything I ever learnt :(

Janestreet (#4,613)

ohhh you're so right!

also: "russian is weird and fun!" bahaha, so true, so true.
