Portrait of a Lady in a Recession
The Obama Administration released a report on women and the recession yesterday that took baby steps toward making this country more like France (but perhaps without the daddy issues). The report emphasizes that American women now make up “nearly” 50 percent of the nation’s workforce; consequently they need more help than in previous recessions, so more financial goodies will be heading their way. There’s a section of the report that addresses “supporting working women at home and in their jobs,” but while there are several statements that sound French in philosophy, they are tempered with United Nations-like adjectives. For example: “The President is committed to the issue of workplace flexibility and proposed funding to help states start their own paid leave programs and is working towards establishing the federal government as a model employer” (italics mine). I said baby steps.
